>>129863493More like underrated.>>129863577Mozart would make the list had he lived to compose a couple more. As it is, he left us a mostly juvenile set of symphonic works. With Schostakovich I freely admit that some personal bias is influencing my list; I never really got what was so great about his symphonies.
>>129863617if you can get Mahler, you can get Shostakovich imoparticularly symphonies 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 127 and 10 are masterpieces, 5 and 8 come close, and the rest are great
>>129863617>More like underrated.First off, people only listen to three of his five symphonies, so already you cut his quantity/cycle in half. Secondly, while the 3rd and 4th are fun, they don't offer any emotional depth or sublimity. The 5th is solid but again, not a masterpiece. I just don't see how they rank among the all-time best.
>>129859141I'm putting more effort into classical guitar, what are some nice intermediate pieces for someone looking for a path less trodden? For example, I really liked all of Erik Satie's Gnosiennes on guitar - something that initially I thought wouldn't be as nice as it is on piano, and boy did I turn out to be mistaken!

They're all great and a must listen, so I'd say start with the first one, but if it's too post-romantic for you and you want to dive straight into his modern stuff then I suppose you could go for the 3rd. Most of his stuff is great, though. Overlooked and underlistened-to composer even though he always seems to be somewhere in the periphery of general discourse.
>>129860178And a Satie night.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96-ey88w3KQFunny thing is, almost every other Satie piece would have been more aptly called a Nocturne. And apparently it's not his usual irony, it's just me not really feeling them. To me they are a bit too lively and idyllic. Maybe it's the classic mistake of playing Satie too fast. But I still like them, been listening every night lately. Also despite being a late composition, I think they have more of a classical (or at least romantic impressionist) sound.

>>129865617The Maple Leaf Rag
>>129865581And lastly, the thing I've noticed about making recommendations (or really anywhere) is people only listen to things they're directly in the mood for. If someone asks for symphonies and you give them symphonies, yeah they'll probably listen to it. If someone wants to listen to Bach and you tell them you came across a new, fantastic Brahms recording, nothing you do will convince them to listen to it until they're ready. My point being the goal with your posts shouldn't be primarily to get people to listen to every one of those links, but rather to enter the composer and those works into everyone's consciousness, so for when they are ready, they will listen to them. That's how it works for me here at least, for example the Franz Schreker links you used to post; I never clicked on one until I finally got into the mood for his brand of Germanic orchestral music long after you had stopped posting links to his music. Without your posts, he never would have been in my consciousness, so I would have neither ever searched him up or, more likely for most, clicked on his name when I came across his music and recordings, for he'd just be another obscure, unworthy composer one forever scrolls past otherwise if not for your posts cementing his name into our mind. That's my view, anyway.
damn lost my place in Gotterdammerung so now I have to start from the beginning again. RIP the rest of my evening
>>129865690Thanks for the feedback, truly. My idea is that if I post a wide ranging number of works, spanning also a range of genres, that represent all the major works and periods of the composer, that it's more likely someone will gravitate towards it, regardless of what they're currently in the mood for.For example, I won't have to wait for someone to feel like getting recommendations specifically in the symphonic realm, or specifically chamber music, or even more specifically string quartets, if I've already included all of that (composer permitting) in my "shill" posts. I see, however, how that could be a bit overwhelming and actively drive people away ("I'm not listening to ALL of that" is a reccuring complaint, followed by people asking me to narrow it down to the best 5/10 works, something I'm utterly unable to do unless the composer's already pretty limited, in which case the links aren't likely to be many to begin with).Sometimes it's hard to tell what will and won't work here. I know I've gotten good results in the past, though. Glad to know you checked out Schreker because of my promoting him, for example. The Bridge, Spohr, Hindemith and Foulds posts were also moderately well received.

When they were first played they towered head and shoulders--in sheer technique, let alone content--above previous symphonic offerings by British composers. Today when we have the magnificent symphonies of Vaughan Williams, Walton, Bax, Rubbra, Britten, and others to set beside them, they still stand apart, having already achieved the status of classics. Their mastery may have been equaled, but it has not been surpassed.I've listened to many, many recordings of these two wonderful symphonies, yet I never got around to these famous historical accounts by Sir Adrian Boult. I've heard from many his remains the best performances to this day. Let's find out!

>>129866901keep it, it's cursed
>>129866775That's *my* favourite recording, personally, for what it's wortht
>>129866942Do you feel the same about the Boult/Menuhin recording of Elgar's Violin Concerto?
>>129866977Now that you mention it I'm not sure... I guess I'll be finding out soon
>>129866925I stole it and now the Lakers are losing by ~35 points. I should have listened...
>>129866977>>129866990For future reference the recording I'm more used to is Du Pré's, and apparently liked it well enough not to consider a different recording for years
>>129867035forgot pic
>>129867035>>129867046That's the Cello Concerto!!But yes it's an essential recording for any classical fan.
>>129867056Shit, my brain's not cooperating tonight. As far as the VIOLIN concerto's concerned, I like the Hugh Bean/Sir Charles Groves/LPO one
On retrospect I think what happened was that in my mind I replaced Menuhin with Rostropovich. I'm very sleepy
>>129867095Not only have I never heard of that recording I haven't heard of the violinist or conductor! Guess I'll check it out. I personally think the Violin Concerto has a lot of great recordings. I'm not sure I could narrow it down to even a top three.>>129867124:p
>>129867175>I personally think the Violin Concerto has a lot of great recordings. I'm not sure I could narrow it down to even a top three.I think it's high time I try a few more, so I'm willing to take recs. Already made a mental note to check out >>129866977

>>129867718Is this Carlos Kleiber's best recording (by far)?
>>129863764Lobgesang is a masterpiece as is the Scottish.
>>129866775These are still my favourite recordings of Elgar symphonies too.
>>129867847Anyone who thinks Mendelssohn is anything less than first-rate and couldn't see how he's underrated should be ignored completely. Not even worth ridicule.
>>129867923shalom.
>>129867923First-rate in some forms no doubt but symphonies? No way. I doubt I would place a Mendelssohn symphony in my top... 25?
>>129867952That's fair, but that's also you. I think out of the 5 full-size symphonies he wrote only the first one isn't a masterpiece. And maybe I *wouldn't* include the Italian in my top 20. The rest are definitely up there with the greatest. Symphonies aside it's impossible not to include some of his other symphonic works, such as the Midsummer Night suite, or the Hebrides overture, or some of his concertos, as very much amongst the best of the century.>>129867938Go back to /meal/
>>129867812If we're not counting just his officially sanctioned recordings, then I would say his Brahms 2nd is the best one he ever did. Or his Beethoven 4th.

>>129868069I too refer to "music producers" as knob pullers.
>>129868136That's what I call organists
Maybe this doesn't apply to anyone else here because I spend too much time listening to classical music, but Vaughan Williams' symphonies work pretty well as one long symphony, from the 1st-to-the-9th. It has a nice ebb and flow, nice variety.
Any good recordings of Purcell's Funeral Music for Queen Mary and Here The Deities Approve?

Did choral and opera singing come from the same tradition (I assume Renaissance religious works or w/e) -- if so, when did the split happen -- or were they always separate and distinct?
>coworker finds out im into classical>"teehee im into classical too, I have a bunch of classical songs on my playlist">have to remind them that they are compositions and not "songs">ask them to name a few pieces none the less>its a bunch of generic ass shit, beethoven, rach 2, that meme shostakovich waltz from the kubrick movie>just say "ok" and try to change the subjectI'm almost glad less people listen to classical these days, it should be gatekept to only the cultured.
>>129871442Seems like he's making a good faith effort. It's not easy getting into classical these days if you don't know where or how to look. I remember when I first started, listening to Richter's Beethoven or Schubert, for a moment I thought his were the newest recordings available because they don't record classical music anymore, haha. In any case, sounds like an opportunity for you to help him get into more, and to make a new friend. Should have wrote out "/classical/ on 4chan.org/mu/" on a piece of paper and handed it to him.
>>129871352In such a case it is usually worthwhile to search for any recordings at all. Looks like there are three more, don't know if they contain the same works.https://www.discogs.com/artist/1342028-Philippe-de-Vitry

Plus one recording of the Preludes and Overtures (though there's a thousand recordings of these already, so you shouldn't have an issue finding a superior recording elsewhere by a better conductor and orchestra combo), and a recording of Wagner's two symphonies.

Where do I start with Wagner? Is it ok to listen to bits and pieces of the ring cycle
>>129872251Why do so many people pretend to be me? I guess its kind of flattering
>>129872289>Is it ok to listen to bits and pieces of the ring cycleSure. Highlights recordings exist. Or however you wanna do it.Personally, I'd say start with the Preludes and Overtures (DG has a wonderful collection, so does Solti on Decca). Once you've fallen in love with those and want to tackle his operas proper, then I'd recommend starting with Tannhauser (Solti or Barenboim recording) and Tristan und Isolde (Bohm, Barenboim, or Karajan 1972 recording). If you enjoy those, then dive into the Ring (Bohm, Solti, or Barenboim set). Hope you end up enjoying his music! Lord knows I have.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtGfwdIb11Y&list=OLAK5uy_lBjfGRzkp2Shl_x8R38xCfzjXAgnl9N90&index=1

wow this thread went to shit right at this >>129867718 pointnot one good post, honestly impressive
>>129872438Hmm, a bit autistic, as historically playing overtures and preludes as standalone orchestral pieces in concert has always been a thing, somethin all composers were aware of, so if intent is what bugs you, it shouldn't, but I respect it. In that case, dive right into Tannhauser. I think it's the most approachable of his operas, next to Tristan und Isolde.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Q-JXfXE1vQ&list=OLAK5uy_lwwRfvRlCVfNHb7rOPEPIXqPgOALSsSs4&index=1If the singing in this recording doesn't do it for you, there's always the Solti or Sawallisch recordings worth checking out too.

>>129873410Havent yet heard mengelberg but your post makes me curious. What is so good about his version?
>>129873723It is the only correct version basically. Classical performance by and for the highest functioning minds, for the most delicately sensitive and autistic sort. Of course, you liking slop like Szell would probably miss all that makes it good, but listen to it anyway. It is possibly the most expressive Bach recording ever made.
>>129873723>>129873791To flesh out what makes it good, it's the heavy use of rubato, large romantic sonority, lush strings, portamenti, lingering vibrato, arching phrases, high louds and low quiets (instead of static, dynamicless slop we hear today) - it is pure perfection. No reason to listen to any other, except Furt's or Richter's for the complete version. But I'm completely fine with cuts, I don't need anything less.
>>129873410Mengelberg sucks, Richter is highly over rated. What other ones have you even listened to?
