Should I buy a Drop pedal or a second guitar? I want to play songs that are on D standard, Drop C and C standard. I'm using 10-46 at my only electric guitar and anything below Eb standard or Drop C# just feels too floppy. Just be honest.
Thoughts on the 3 note per string shapes? Are they useful for anything?

>>129860135Is basswood a bad tonewood?
>>129860219Nobody cares. It's just cheap.
>>129860062Yes. It was the primary system I learned early on but since then I started favoring a few of the caged shapes, and even further on I've been using some pseudo-berklee shapes I guess. Kinda the way Greg Howe describes the way he plays scales now: 3nps but just 2 notes on the G string so you can keep everything in a nice vertical position. But the 3nps shapes are still useful to know for filling in the gaps, playing more horizontally, diagonally, and for playing scale sequences like ascending/descending 4s, etc. I guess the difference now is I generally think of the vertical scale shapes as "home base" and 3nps shapes as extensions of, and/or paths to get around to different bases. But that's just me. There are many different methods for fretboard navigation and visualization.

>>129859988Repostan here out of personal vanity:I recorded this with the DigiTech Drop:https://voca.ro/1lFxqrlN40tPUnfortunately it sounds pretty weird if you're playing at low volume because you hear the dissonance of the strings ringing out against the pitch shifted signal. Also last time I tried using it it wouldn't turn on, or rather, I think it turned on but I couldn't get any signal to go through.¯\(ツ)/¯I haven't really messed with it since then.

People say acoustics generally sound better the more they're played.Do you believe it? Scientifically how would that even be work?
>>129860062I don't like them. You have to stretch to hit some notes, which makes it easier to get lost, which causes more overhead and makes you play slower and make more mistakes. I prefer scale positions that limit themselves to 4 frets, and if a note is out of reach you move to a different position. This keeps your index finger and pinky finger placed consistently and moving around the neck is faster and more consistent.
>>129862262magic
>>129862276three notes per string honestly feels like a crutch for people who want to stay in one position and don't like switching between positions while soloing
>>129862262the wood vibrating shakes the bad tone out until there isn't any left after 20000 hours of play time
>>129862294bluegrass mogs in one position the picking is fiercely complicated though
Put a piece of poo inside your guitar for the best tone
>>129862327This is true, there are some styles of music like folk and bluegrass that really jam on one chord for a long time, and staying in one position makes some sense there. I prefer music with some movement to the harmony.
>>129862262the phenomenon have been proven to be true but isn’t really understood. a lot of people speculate that the vibrations relax the stresses in the wood particularly the glue joints. guitars are under a lot of tension not just from the strings; since the guitar body itself is the speaker, more movement you can get in the top without sacrificing strength will improve the sound. my experience is that guitars sound better after a couple of months of playing them
i think every guitar sounds better after playing it for a few months because your ears become accustomed to it and then other guitars start sounding "bad" just because it sounds different than what you are used to
>>129862415dang; bruh
>>129859988Buy a drop, you'll break strings way more often constantly retuning, the only downside is that with distortion it sounds worse the lower you go
Name one good JHS pedal
>>129862415sound rational but logically doesn’t fit because you can A/B guitars and they sound different. my good acoustics have always seemed to just sound different all at once it’s not an incremental process.
>>129862444can't, the volutre pedal looks cool, want to try it out on analog chorus and analog delay
>>129862488it's not about different, it's about what sounds good to you. you can A/B two guitars and they will sound different, but the one you think sounds bad will be the one furthest away from the sound your ears are accustomed to
>>129862488just to add idk if you guys have ever played just an acoustic for 4-6 hours every day for 3 months you really know the ins and outs of the way it sounds. so the guitar “opening up” is very noticeable when it happens. I feel like the harmonics become more distinct and the noise inbetween is lessened. idk what’s actually going on but what I hear is the guitar becoming more resonant and having more clarity and definition between the notes
>>129862444the only cool JHS pedal is the one that is actually a BOSS pedal
>>129862546not really. I’ve been playing for a long time all I hear is bum notes and eq differences meaning I can typically identify the guitar. there’s no better or worse except objectively on some things like sustain and resonance. martins and taylors sound distinctly different but they’re suited for different playstyles not that one sounds worse than the other because you can make up the eq difference with the way you play the guitar. recordings never quite capture what’s going on in the resonance chamber which is 90% of the magic of an acoustic. it’s like watching a video of a rally driver, it does nothing to tell you how the car feels to drive. you have to drive it yourself.
>>129862552your brain and your ears are a lot more subject to change than an instrument constructed of wood. you're right, over time the instrument will change a little bit. i don't think that's enough to explain what you're describing. occam's razor says you and your brain are adapting, not the physical object you are observing. your brain has software, the instrument is hardware only
>>129862583that’s unlikely because two acoustics made the exact same way with the exact materials aren’t likely to sound the same. you can repeat the same results to a great extent with a tone traveler and leaving your acoustic guitar in a closet for a week and not play it at all and demo the results. which would also allow you to hear them back to back. unless your saying the ear will change and adapt in less than 45 seconds
>>129862623two instruments constructed the same way and sounding different from one another is different than one guitar sounding significantly different over time
>>129862654the point was that there is more variance in the guitar itself than in your hearing. so anyway how does your method explain the results from the tone traveler scenario
U guys don't know shit about shit
>>129862664what results, it's hypothetical. the results i would expect is the acoustic doesn't sound as good as you remember it after a week, and sounds even worse after a month. then after you play it a bit it starts to sound how you remember because your ear re-adjusts
>>129862683it’s not hypothetical if you’re too lazy to look them up
>>129862692how do i look up a hypothetical scenario that requires me to play an acoustic for long enough to get used to it, put it away in a closet, switch to a different guitar, then switch back to the acoustic
>>129862707companies have already done the research and published the results. are you seriously that retarded? what was the point in even arguing when you’re clearly ignorant?

When ear training modes using a drone is the 1 or tonic always the drone tone?
Doing this bass aerobics exercise book my teacher told me about. It's 1 exercise per week so I'm doing this for 20 minutes a day. I got the first 16 bars down 19 and beyond I'm working on tomorrow. Going to work on some scales then arpeggios. I also have switch back to fingers over picking for bass. For some reason i suck at scales without my fingers
>>129865119mmmm
>>129865088very confusing question but in my opinion, say E Phrygian is the third mode of the C major scale. you can resolve on the E and have it as the tonal center of your scale and it will sound ok over a C drone because it’s just the notes of C major. But if you play it over an E drone it will sound more unique because you have a minor 2nd. depends on what you are calling a tonic in this scenario, the key center or the tonal center?
>>129865119if he’s telling you to use fingers over a pick that’s very wise imo. you can always learn pick but you can do such much more with fingers
>>129865224not a bass guy but i started fingerpicking when i comp with shell voicings then use my pick for lead. lets me do more with the comp rhythm, and the pick boosts the volume a bit for lead
>>129865224nah i had personally made the switch sometime last fall from fingers to picking. i did have fun with it but i hardly ever did real practice with a pick. it was mostly playing along to stuff i already knew. using one now when im learning fundamental stuff is kinda distracting. its much easier for me mentally to learn first on fingers then transfer it to picking. >>129865164dont look at my legs like that

Richard’s is more straight ahead rock with great guitar parts but Tom’s stuff goes from being also straight ahead rock to being out there and weird and I luv it allhttps://youtu.be/P7YYiyLrj5o
>>129867829For me, it's probably. I'm a lefty, but incorrectly was taught like a righty. It sucked and I struggled, but I didn't know better. Then it became habit. I suck more at picking now, by far.
>>129867861For me it's the other way around*screwed up my post
went to guitar center today. i really wanted to see if there was something i was missing between the playability of a 400-500 dollar guitar and a 3000 dollar guitar. i found most of the 500-1000 dollar guitars more fun to play. gloss necks are trash and there was one 3500 dollar one i picked up with the sharpest fret ends i've ever felt on any guitar, and i'm now convinced that past a certain point there's nothing different about the playability of these instruments and that 3k is a fucking meme price for any guitar.
>>129867816>It’s fine just don’t get a fucking gfTake it from me. Don’t get a fucking gf just get a gf for fucking.>unless they have kids and shitSee above. Your kids will fuck your shit up. Broken LPs used as frisbees, kicked in speakers, coming home to cassette tapes that look like spaghetti, every guitar detuned, plugging into your amp turning it on to find out every knob has been turned to 10 and that’s just the start.
>>129867858That's how i feel about it. Lloyd's a traditional and great shredder..and does those things better than Tom could any day. But Tom came from left field. He didn't start as a guitar player either. I think he learned on horns and piano growing up.
>>129867924He got his teeth busted out playing hockey and took up guitar because he couldn’t play sax anymore, to me that’s why his playing was so weird. Like he approached it like a horn player. Richard is in a way a direct student of Hendrix which is really cool and I genuinely love his playing too, but Tom just did things nobody else would think to play. His live stuff could be either a home run or a total dud because he was always experimenting and it didn’t always work but he didn’t care. He was just a weird dude and I love his work.

I just wanna find a like minded couple of dudes who want to do a true-to-television type of band.No one quite gets them right. They’re not post punk, they’re not punk, they’re nothing like the strokes, they’re not plain songwriter indie either. It’s the perfect blend of virtuosity and songwriting. It sucks because everyone I meet in their 20s has these broad sweeping ideas of rock music. I’ve been shows where kids say they love TVU and sonic youth but their band sounds like Green Day. How do you not automatically cringe at Green Day if you claim to be that part of punk cult?Call me a wrong generation loser
>>129867971I didn't know about the hockey story.I busted out my teeth myself.. but skating. Hockey sounds cooler.

>>129865088Yes.
>>129865203If you're playing E Phrygian over a C drone, the ear will hear C Major resolving to the 3rd. It won't hear E Phrygian. You would need an E drone for that. The drone establishes the harmony, which has a direct effect on how the ear hears modes. This is why aimlessly noodling diatonic modes usually doesn't sound too great. You have to play to the harmonic context.

How do I reach a baseline competency in guitar? I just want to strum basic chords and sing like on youtube. Yung kai's blue is a good song, viva la vida too
>>129870845if you just want to sing in your bedroom, knowing chords is enough especially if it's pop songs since they're piss easy to rememberif you want to be good enough to play in a band and you're the only guitarist there, you also need to know how to play lead lines and maybe some improv if your band plays that kind of genre
>>129870532www.flatpickerhangout.com/tab/browse.asp
>>129870845Pic rel. I think you can ignore most of the weird spider exercises and finger twister stuff from the beginning of the book and just focus on learning the main basic and contemporary chord grips in each key, the open triad voicings, and maybe some pentatonics and basic arpeggios if you want to learn lead or spice up your rhythm playing with double stops and such. Also Guthrie Govan's book, Creative Guitar 1 has a lot of useful fundamentals but iirc it seems more focused on the single note lead playing aspect.

>>129865567>>129871016Is it worth it to learn reading sheet music? I've been playing for a few years and I can feel like tabs are limiting me. I watched a video recently that was about how you don't have to read every single number on sheet music like you have to do with tabs, you just look at the shape of the music
>>129871033if you mean sheet music like tablature, my opinion is if you're not good enough at transcribing a piece of music by yourself but you still want to know why some melody lines you should try reading there. but that itself takes an enormous effort because not only you have to read the notes which depends on how many flats and sharps for the sheet music, you also need to know how to play in beat.that's the biggest wall to climb and nowadays probably only die-hard musicians who play in orchestra or professional transcriber that can do that.
>>129871016This is hard to memorize maybe but it's mostly just 8th notes, this one I've been learning for the past week has me banging my head against the wall (skip the octave parts)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ApAlw_gt1o
>>129871033>Is it worth it to learn reading sheet music?Probably. How hard could it be, anyway? Just have to brute force learn key signatures, the lines and spaces on the staff, and maybe about 5 ledger lines above and below, Regardless of an intent to read sheet music you should already know or be learning: the note names everywhere on the fretboard, as well as chord, arpeggio, and scale shapes in each major/minor key.
>>129871098this is doable because everything is in C minor key, meanwhile mixed nuts' chords are like this https://ja.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/4162627. hige dandism can just pull this kind of chords progressions out of nowhere once in a while before falling back to make more J-slop
>>129871121Maybe if you know theory and play everything according to shapes you already know, to a retard like me who memorizes everything it's not that difficult compared to other shit
