>>129883910
learning by ear is a million times better for creating music than Suzuki method. classical musicians are notoriously poor improvisers
>>
>>129883910
>if you perform music you arent [a composer, conductor, or performer of music]
>>
>>129883910
People may not learn formally and in a right brained way, but they will learn intuitively, by osmosis and listening, and hands-on. Learning music itself existed before theory. Some of them are still geniuses. If you told George Lynch he's not a musician, he'd prove you wrong immediately...and all you'd need is hears to realize it.
>>
>>129883930
playing by ear is just a different way of understanding music and it's valid. if you haven't learned anything, playing by ear is you hunting around playing the wrong notes until you play the one your ear says is right. when you play by ear without mistakes, you do actually understand fundamental musical concepts, just in a different way. otherwise you would constantly be hunting around with your fingers, the knowledge (whether out of a book or learned through practice) is what lets you play the right note every time

>>
>>129883961
i agree with this, you don't need to learn it out of a book or formally. but i think a lot of non-musicians point at real musicians who play by ear and say "see, i'm like them!" when these musicians understand a lot more about music than they do
>>
>>129883961
im imagining slime getting utterly btfo'd by george lynch now
>>
>>129883970
i will say though, learning by ear is slow. the theory lets you leap forward and your ear will catch up. you will be really limited in what you learn if you rely entirely on your ear and what you happen to pick up naturally. if you are constantly playing with other musicians, that can help fill the gaps
>>
play by ear and it sounds like shit
no other instrument prioritizes first time listening and that’s because its not what makes a track a track
its a cheap parlor trick
>>
>>129883910
You seem to be confusing documentation and pedagogy with music.
>>
the notes that are out of key are the most interesting and rhythm is 80% of what makes music interesting. learning theory is not required to make good music and reading standard notation definitely does not matter to a songwriter unless he wants to explain what he wrote to someone else
>>
>>129884048
music is fundamentally an exercise of learning and applying that learning creatively. both are important. the former provides tools for the latter. ignoring how you approach learning about music and dismissing it as not music is setting yourself up to be hardstuck

Your argument sucks because you could say the same about blind people (I guess they can read braille). But ten bucks says that if the had the opportunity to see the words on the page AS THEY PLAYED, they would do it.

>>129884205
wooten said you should learn theory so well that it becomes subconscious. if you take that to mean you shouldn't learn music theory in the first place god help you
>>
>>129884137
All that needs to prove you wrong is you just using your ears. There are countless musicians who made great music without learning theory.
Half of them weren't particularly great performers either. I mean, that wasn't their main gimmick or anything. They had frontmen for that.
Give it a try. The worst that can happen is that you'll just enjoy yourself at all of the great music available to you.
>>
On the flipside, I wouldn't totally shit on music theory. It's not an either/or.
I don't think you could be a Brian Setzer and not know theory. He not only shreds, but conducts a big swing band while he's doing it. You're not going to get far doing that just "winging it".
>>
>>129884247
you seem to think using your ears and learning theory are mutually exclusive. everyone who learns theory also trains their ear. you cannot play music without training your ear. you are actively choosing not to learn theory because you think it's yucky and that's telling of your intelligence

Is this friendly fire? I am pro-reading and pro-using your ear. They’re not mutually exclusive, but the ones who choose not learn to read are just coping.

I know I suck as a programmer, but even the little that I know exponentiates my job prospects. Even programming macros and scripts while slaving ChatGPT means that I learn by osmosis.
>not “well outlier x does this, so therefore exception proves the rule
Fuck, I’m even a worse web designer, but a little knowledge of Canva, MS Paint, and Photoshart running AI trash means I can charge a law firm $120/hr, and interface with graphic designers with better skills (making both our lives easier).

This is not a zero sum game. The argument against reading is more about a purity spiral masquerading as stylistic choice.

Look at the Ravel example. If I wanted to appropriate the example, I’d have to listen to it and capture the nuance by ear. Or, I can just take a quick glance and see the entire nuts and bolts that would otherwise be hidden (like which hand is best for the tenor melody). In fact, if you relied solely on ear before recorded music, you’d be shit out of luck if your memory was iffy.
>but that’s because you have perfect pitch and relative pitch, as well as total autism recall, right?
>>
>>129884423
right, because he internalized it subconsciously. he's still using music theory. he just doesn't want to actively think about it, because that means he failed to properly internalize something until it became automatic. you're misinterpreting completely mastery of music theory with rejection of music theory
>>
>>129884448
>Is this friendly fire?
Perhaps. I'm just chiming in late. I just can't deny the talent some of these informal learners of guitar have. Chalk it up to some kind of idiot savant type of thing. But I'm not saying I'm one of them myself. I think theory could help me, personally. And I know a little bit at least.
>>
>>129884448
I'm lazy and I want to just read the chord symbols over the bars and figure out the rhythm and melody by ear because it's more intuitive that way. If I really want to slave away at reading a melody on a page I can do it but it's not how I prefer to spend my time. Why don't you learn to play a different instrument? It might inform your musicianship in a positive way. Anyway the sheet describes the music, not the other way around.

It’s both a “race to the bottom” and an engineered cycle. Unless you maintain quality, standards, and absolute control (Chik Fil A / In n Out), you end up becoming Burger King.

I just drove through Binghamton and whoever programmed Google Maps keeps fucking up where you can U-turn. Nor did it warn me about traffic at Walmart, and when the “Police Have Been Reported Up Ahead”, I noticed they finally fixed the bug that would cover up the speed limit.

Really, you could make long-term bets against companies that sell out for short-term gain. And for every big business out there, there are SMB operations that get taken for a ride by fookin pakis.

I ordered my second copy of Buckethead's guitar. I gotta say as far as guitar designs go that one I really like, being a Les Paul but having 24 frets. I want to modify the guitar when I get it, and I'm wondering if i should add some sort of modern trem system or how that even works? anyone know? The guitar is mahogany so I figure that's a pretty strong piece of wood and would make a grand guitar when it's done.
>>
I bought a knockoff vintage fender and I think it might be wrecked in every way.
>>
>>129885057
if you want a particular trem system you should buy a guitar that was built with that trem system. if you want to add it to this guitar you're going to have to significantly modify the body

Every issue the seller said the amp had was fixed when I plugged in the reverb tank and the foot switch into the correct jacks. He had them in wrong which made the reverb not work and one of the channels not work. Plugged them in correctly and it’s working fine. It has a slight hiss which I expected something along those lines from a 45 year old amp but I’ll take a slight hiss any day of the week compared to what I thought I was getting. For a $400 amp I’m thrilled with it.

I was expecting to spend another few hundred bucks for a tech to get it up to speed if it was beyond something I’m comfortable with doing myself (which is most amp stuff) but even then at $700-$800 for a Music Man amp with a fresh sheet of health from the doctor I was comfortable with. I’m gonna hit it with some contact cleaner sometime next week and see if that’ll clean it up some of the slight hiss, if so then cool if not then I can just deal with it or go ahead and consider a tech but as is I’m happy with it

If you knew anything about anything you'd know shielding is a joke. First off, it doesn't do shit. Provably. Find me an A/B example where shielding reduces noise and I'll cut my dick off, microwave it til it splits and eat it on tv.
Secondly, shielding tape deadens the tonewood where it matters most.

Is it worth putting together a Warmoth Strat specifically for a color? I want a certain spec Strat but the only ones in the finish that I want that Fender makes are going to be custom shop or some Japanese imports that are limited, expensive, and you have to be lucky to get one when they’re actually available.
>>
>>129889908
>https://voca.ro/114CdY84if5b Nice track, sorry had to ruin it
na I dig it
>>
>>129892272
standard notation makes more sense if you don’t look at it as easier to read but easier to write
>>
>>129892280
i'm completely lost if i have to read something with flats sheet notes, so basically anything that has # there is not for semitone higher, that's natural's job?
>>
>>129892303
yes. I think your scenario is the best case for a warmoth build. they’re great quality and far more spec options but I can only recommend them if you know exactly what you want and if you would otherwise have to buy a custom shop to get it. a warmoth will cost half the price and be specd better
>>
guitarists tend to only think of things in terms of sharps, no flats
just make it easier on yourself, you aren't bach
>>
>>129892313
don’t overthink it. if it says natural it’s natural if it says sharp sharp flat flat etc. the key signature is so you don’t have tons of accidentals if you have a key with a bunch of sharps or flats. standard notation was already mostly set in stone when people were primarily only playing diatonic music
>>
>>129892323
Is it worth it just for a finish though? Like I can buy the spec I want just not in the look I want and it’ll probably come out to be the same cost as a Warmoth build. I can’t decide if it’s worth the time and effort just for a finish.
>>
>>129892365
if you don’t mind taking a guitar you already have for donor parts, then you can get just a warmoth body for like $400. a custom shop fender starts at like $4500
>>
building your own parts guitar sounds great until you actually try to do it
>>
>>129892365
And I should say I can probably find something MIJ/CIJ that will be very close to the spec that I want but I’d have to settle for a basswood body instead of alder or even better ash. It’s not that big of a deal to me especially with wanting a finish where you won’t see the wood but I like the idea of a one piece ash body if going the Warmoth route instead of a basswood Japanese body.
>>

>>129892447

this mustang is 90s MIJ and it's very high quality and fun to play. don't play it much because i prefer the way my strat sounds, but the quality is objectively better

>barre chords are painful and awkward to play so I don't play them
Sounds like you're just a shitty guitar player then. Thanks for outing yourself. If you spent more time practicing them than typing out captchas on here, you'd probably not be so shitty. Maybe try standing up and playing instead of sitting down in a chair with the guitar neck angled back and your posture and playing position all fucked up so you can see the neck with your eyes. I'm on to you...

Minor: Easy, natural fingerings, lines just flow
Major: Difficult, unnatural fingerings, lines come out stilted and disjointed.

It is also difficult to make "convert to minor" sound good.

major only sounds good if you get rid of the 4th

I practiced for 2 hours today. haven’t touched guitar in 7 months (bass player). picking accuracy is still 70% there but it’s sloppy. hopefully it all comes back to me in a week or two.

those who can play, play guitar
those who can't, play bass

any instrument can be as easy or difficult as you want to make it

my bassist forgot how to play bass, and can't be bothered with it anymore, should I just take that role from him?

Stop cumming on your guitar, for starters.
