I've become a bit disillusioned with shoegaze over the past 3-4 years. The new wave of bands is just not really blowing me away. Most of them are pretty boring or just outright alt-Metal acts disguising themselves as shoegaze. In fact my home state seems to be produced new bands at a nice rate that get some nice nationwide attention, but I've seen them all live and they all kinda suck in terms of presentation and sonic weight. The hands are changing and the people at the ground floor making this scene a big deal don't seem too bothered in the music being pretty same-y. Probably just me.

Yeah I was a surprised too. The show is advertised as a co-headline, but Fleshwater has been taking the late slot this tour.
Julie's music has been out for a while now. Their popular songs are from 2020. I think a lot of the social media hype has died down. But their new stuff is really cool. The songs only played live. Clearly pivoting into their own flavor of rock music.

I adore this album. Despite it being accoustic, the layering is so thick that it's Dreampop, yet still very lightweight

I like the previous one more. The harsh lo-fi sound of this. Sounds like listening to pop while drowning in an ocean of codeine

That's a funny and also good identifier considering most young persons definitions of shoegaze is so fucking broad bowls I'll have to check it out. MBV always will be the pinnacle for me and I can only applaud trying to do a tribute band to them. It's a behemoth task.

What happened to Kraus? He was on a heater for a minute, but it's been 5 years since the last record and all he's dropped since then was 2 songs a couple years ago. He was my front runner for best shoegaze artist coming out of the post- pandemic rush of bands who started to play shoegaze. Hope he's been cooking up something.

2010s shoegaze was a golden era, didn't know it at the time but it was a niche fledgling thing that had a lot of variety and was interested in the first wave of shoegaze revivalism, now it seems the genre is more concerned with being 'heavy' and chock full of the correct aesthetics rather than a interest in sonic textures, there were bands like Nothing who were doing the whole Hum heavy gaze thing don't get me wrong, but it wasn't the dominant mode that gets copy and pasted like now

Tons of great shoegaze during that decade. Zoomers knowledge on shoegaze is Deftones which isn't even shoegaze to begin with. Makes sense why its all the same garbage.

like 10+ years ago i was obsessed with shoegaze, mostly japanese
listened to mikgazer and kinoko teikoku on repeat
there was this youtube channel that would upload a ton of japanese shoegaze and i'd listen to it all

anyway i haven't really listened to music in years and i'm just back here for old time's sake and to visit the corpse of one of the best music discussion forums that ever existed
rip old /mu/
