Posting my mustang. Anybody know a decent distortion to use as a boost for solos that plays well with single coils? Not looking for a "nirvana" sound, more "numbers girl" solos. Do I just say fuggit and buy a proco rat?
Signal currently looks like this
Mustang > BD2 > SD1 > CH1 (VERY light chorus, just for glimmer) > 50w tube amp on clean signal
I know it's unpopular to put the chorus at the end of the chain, but I find it gives it less of an 80s sound and just adds an element of lushness to the signal.
>>
>les paul standard 60s in cardinal red out of stock
They're never restocking it are they?
>>
>>130816105
I absolutely hate that the “Nirvana” sound is the automatic assumption for Mustangs. Maybe with humbuckers like Kurt’s with its bridge humbucker but with single coils it’s definitely not for a “Nirvana” sound.
>>
>>130816105
Try an eq pedal
you'll get a lot of tone shaping potential from it too.

Same here. I actually rescued this guitar from a junkie who had a seymour duncan rail pickup duct-taped in the bridge position and had ripped out all the wiring. I rewired it all stock and it has vintage 1970s competition mustang pickups now.
>>130816416
Actually hadn't thought of that. It's probably time I got one and stopped just using the knobs on my amp.
>>
>>130816161
Yours had stainless steel frets and still wore off? I was told they last decades. I was bummed out when I got this one and it didn't have SS frets. Now I'm less sad.
Mine has nickel frets, so it wasn't that hard to work them, even less for a professional luthier. I will take it to a local shop next, which I've read are very arrogant. I have nothing to lose anymore.

>>130817506
I recommend the BM Deluxe because it gives you more than a few extra parameters as well as a mid boost that can be toggled via foot switch and expression pedal which is pretty cool. The Muff 2 is a little less dynamic but it has a clarity when maxed out that other muffs lack. Personally I run them both simultaneously with an OD pedal underneath and have no issues with it being too muddy. I dial everything to taste and run it all through the combined channel of my Mig 50. It doesn’t sound as good through my other amps, that MiG 50 is an amazing amp for running a bunch of pedals and getting it to all sound good, whether it’s multiple fuzz pedals or multiple modulation effects on top of fuzz/distortion.

In terms of playability? None. Gibby might use fancier woods and better electronics but in a blind test, I don't think anyone but the biggest autists would be able to spot the difference.

Choice is yours - save and get what you really want or get the Epiphone if you want that / won't get buyers remorse over not getting a Gibson LP

they both use mahogany bodies with a maple top, both use mahogany necks, both use ebony fretboards with mother of pearl inlays, both even have the open book headstock

the only discernable difference other than one saying epiphone and one saying gibson is the gibson has a nitro finish vs the epi's poly.

the IGC epis are solid mahogany with maple caps, not multiple plies or a veneer like their normal customs. There's functionally no difference between flagship epis and gibsons. It's just do you want John Smith or Wang Xing to assemble it.

>>130816514
Yeah plain strings are steel, so steel vs steel abrasion there would be material erosion upon friction. Specially if the plain strings are corroded. But they do last longer and feel way smoother even compared to a newly polished nickel fret. Had some noticeable divots on treble side fret positions compared to the bass round wound string fret side. Got back to playing guitar in 2019 and was playing it a lot in 22-24 during the chink flu scamdemic being homestuck - so might be a factor of time in being abused and having more fretting pressure than necessary as I was relearning my wankery. My other SS guitar with the 58118 fret size might last for decades though as I rarely use it, still looks as good as the day it was refretted.
Good luck with your luthier man, if they do a poor job they might relevel it again and you'll lose some more fret material.. then you'll be frustrated even more and want a refret to stainless steel strings kek

Everyone thinks Gibson's biggest secret is the headstock angle. That's the decoy. The real project started decades ago when they realized a guitar doesn't have to sound different to make people believe it sounds different. Every price increase is a calibration test. Every "limited run" maps another segment of the population. You think you're choosing between a Standard and a Custom Shop. They're measuring suggestibility. I bought a beat-up Epiphone from a guy behind a gas station and accidentally found the control sample they never meant anyone to compare. Ever since I posted spectrograms, random accounts keep replying "play authentic" within minutes, regardless of the website. Coincidence? Sure. I've started storing my guitars in different rooms because I swear the nitro finishes are synchronizing overnight. They can keep the Murphy Lab relics. When I finally prove that 90% of Gibson tone is a memetic contagion propagated through dentist conventions and YouTube demos, they're either going to blacklist me from every guitar forum... or offer me an endorsement deal to keep quiet. Either way, they'll have admitted I was right.

forgot what input gain i had set on my 2i2 and which pickup selector i used when i recorded this heavy chorus distorted section in this song I'm doing. so when i wanted a chord to chime out at the start of verse bar 1, it sounds disconnected. i tried position 2 because i assumed i wanted no hum but maybe it was 1? tomorrow i will spend my day figuring this out. i only use 5, 2 and 1 so it has to be one of them ..it sounded fuller so im guessing 1 or 5. anyway dont be dumb like me kids, write down your tone settings for your songs

Why should I spend $123.79 on a single "Lava Cable LCUF15R Ultramafic Straight to Right Angle Instrument Cable - 15 foot" vs any other cable?
>>
>>130818788
I think you start to lose roi with acoustics around the $3000 range. Past that it's all dressing because you already have all the good woods by $3000. Then you're just getting more perfling and binding shit.
>>
>>130823012
Fender did a study that found that high end in a standard cable starts to die out at what I believe was 18.6'. So they released a cable that length. The Lava Cable would be within that ballpark having only 15' of length. But as for the cost? I say it's mostly aesthetic, but you could also just like supporting boutique brands.

My recommendation is 10' cable from guitar to pedals, 10' cable from the pedals to the amp. Right angle to straight is nice for guitars like a Telecaster with the output jack on the edge.

Amen brother
Thankfully, trying out various picks is one of the cheapest experiments a guitarist can do, gear-wise
I played the standard .6mm Tortex picks for years, I really like the amount of scratchiness you can get out of thin picks when you slant them. Switched to the small Jazz III when I joined a metal band and had to play way more 32nd notes than ever before lol
I tried thicker picks (1.14 as a wee lad, .88 for the last few years) but went one size thinner because pick scrapes are way better that way.
>>
>>130823057
I have a 50' cable i got for like $20 in the late 90s that works fine. Most of the cables I needed to replace were replaced because they were stolen by some faggots my roommate let in the house. it's a fucking wire. Extremely low voltage too. It's not that complex and there's absolutely no justification for spending like 800% more
>>
@beginners:
Get a Squier Classic Vibe 60s Custom Telecaster or 60s Stratocaster. Pictured*
Get a cable that will last.
Get a good Ernie Ball strap, or something similar. Tighten until it rests hanging at the same spot that it rests on your legs while sitting.
Get a clip-on tuner; preferably a D'Addario. You can also use a phone app, but that's not as convenient.
Get a Fender Frontman 10G, a Marshall MG10G, a Vox Pathfinder 10, or a more expensive 'modeling' amp for more options. You might want headphones.
Get a few pick selections, or a variety pack.
Perhaps get the guitar professionally set up.
Put your thumb on the back of the neck, and only press hard enough that the notes ring out without buzzing.

>*Canadian prices

tl;dr-- a beginner would be well off with a squier strat/tele, tuner, cable, pick(s), and an amplifier. That's a really good starting point.
>>
>>130823214
I would say get a yamaha pacifica and skip the piece of shit amp for an ir2.
>>
>>130823295
After this buy a headeush 1x12 frfr and expand a boss me90. Then after 2-5 years get a good guitar and a helix xl or neural dsp. I would say go from this to something like a prs vela s2 and a helix.
>>
>>130823295
I mean, if I was being real I'd say beginners should start with a FSR Fender '65 Princeton Reverb as well, but it's just not always in the cards.

Yamaha Pacifica 112V, 112VM, & 112VMX all look stellar. I still want to get a grey one with maple neck and a black one with rosewood neck; then I want to put the maple neck on the black body and the rosewood neck on the grey. I've also considered swapping out the humbucker bridge pickup for a humbucker sized P90 down the road.

But I'm telling you, the old Fender Player 1 series of guitar (or 'Player' series before 'Player II' series) was really good... but the mentioned Squiers have very nice pickups for Stratocaster and Telecaster sounds... the ones you'd expect.

Furthermore, a beginner might like heavier or lighter strings than the stock ones, at which point you should look into a professional setup a restringing so that the nut is properly cut and the trussrod is at its best position.

Lastly, the Telecaster, for me, turned out much nicer when I swapped the steel saddles out for Gotoh compensated brass saddles, and the strings for flatwound 13s. A Stratocaster wouldn't need a saddles swap, unless you truly prefer something uniquely different, like block saddles or titanium.

Pacificas will get the job done, but the construction of the bolt-on neck guitars with the string tree past the nut is best done to Fender specifications.

The boss ir2 is $180 on sale. And it's a great headphone amp you can then plug into a frfr so it isn't just a headphone amp. Those tiny speakered amps sound like absolute shit and nobody wants to hear a new guitarist struggling
>>
Having said 'get a Squier Classic Vibe 60s Custom Telecaster or 60s Stratocaster' I should add that there are SG Specials from Epiphone with a gigbag for nearly the same price as the Custom Telecaster, and there's a recently released beauty of a semi-hollow for a few hundred extra.

I went through a 'perfecting the Pacifica' phase and I wanted to end up with a humbucker sized P90 in the bridge, true velvets in the neck and middle, and the pull-pot would activate a strangle switch a la Jaguar; not a humbucker split.

I also think the 112V with the rosewood neck and black body would swap parts well with the 112VMX--- which is the one with black hardware instead of white. It's a concept...

>Those tiny speakered amps sound like absolute shit and nobody wants to hear a new guitarist struggling
I just keep my volume relatively low and my door closed. Although realistically, my plateau and low practice hours is because -I- don't want to hear myself struggling. Like, I have a self taught attitude with no songs learned.... and I have been very picky. I got the Frontman 10G because it was cheap, but I also bought a Marshall MG10G for my cousin's son. The Marshall could get a nice gritty sound out of an old bolt-on Epiphone Les Paul Junior with the clipped ear headstock and a weak, barely effective humbucker. Honestly? The 3-prong guitar amps I've mentioned are stellar for tiny rooms with hard walls and solid floors.

My Frontman Settings:
Gain 3.5
O.D. on
Volume 6
Treble 2
Bass 3

It doesn't sound like a cranky, fissy cheap old thing. It sounds like I'm playing a special Telecaster, and I like that.

My only gripe is that I don't have cash and I want a $15 screwdriver to raise the neck pickup and lower the bridge pickup.

>>
>>130823744
truthfully, no. I dont need them I just have them. I was given the board as a gift, I've never them on a real powered board just in different cases unsecured or the floor. I feel like this board is a huge step in the right direction, because doesnt have all the special effects like synths and crazy special modulations. I could maybe see switching the compressor for my pigtronix mothership 2, but I'm trying to refrain cause this board will make me focus on guitar sounds and the compressor adds a lot. Maybe ill make a video and walk through the way it's set up if anyone would find a demo interesting or whatever. The idea is that i can get a range of tones if i need to with the pedals like this, but also it's set up so i can also basically ignore 90 percent of this shit on there and just click on and off distortion over either a really clean tone or a slightly dirty tone. I have 10 pedals on there, I used to use around 20 on average.
>>
Fingerstyle is so fucking hard
I switched from anchoring my pinky to floating which I think I'm actually better at but getting good tone & accurately hitting the strings is difficult

You'd have to drill out the hole for the trem and for the springs in the back. It's pretty hard to do on your own if you don't have the tools and expertise and I imagine it'll cost a pretty penny if you ask the tech to do it. Buying a new guitar with a trem and replacing it is probably the best way to go if you want a vega.

the vocaroos kinda suck its either shitty mic bedroom riffs or the stockest stock of stockerton backing track with the wankiest wankerton as many notes as you can fit diarrhea or rarely boring grandpa guitar

As much as people make of it, nobody's going to dox you based on your uniquely identifiable vibrato.

Of course the ai slop poster can't play guitar.

I can't find a tone I'm happy with. I want a guitar tone that has a very distant feel. Maybe like you took a surf guitarist and you made them do shrooms, and it made them feel hallucinste that they were a ghost. I can't figure it out and it's giving me a headache.

I'd look into reverse reverb "bloom" effects and regenerated delays.
