Replying to fingerstyle anon from previous thread:

It's fun as fuck. I learned via tabs for Jim Croce songs back in the day. It actually prepares you for more advanced fretboard navigation later down the line because you get to see wandering bass notes and melody lines at work in a single position. 100% transferable to jazz, bluegrass and classical.
>>
>>130844350
>wandering bass notes and melody lines
This is what I really like about it
>single position
Idrk what this means though, I thought lead can play anywhere on the fretboard - rhythm too I guess since I suppose bass could stick to the first few frets
>>
>>130844350
i'm fairly new to guitar and jazz but i use my thumb, middle, and ring to play shell voicings. thumb plays the bass note on the 6th or 5th string, middle+ring play the 4th and 3rd string. makes it easy to separate the bass note for bossa nova and stuff

the fifth is the strongest harmonic, so you're already playing the fifth when you play the root note. all chords (besides altered dominants, as mentioned above) use a perfect 5th, so the 5th doesn't let you differentiate one chord from another

But what does harmonic information mean with regards to the 7th?
I still struggle to understand "harmony"
>>
>>130845452
So are you going to apologize or what?
>>
>>130845472
Sorry?
>>
>>130845454
7ths can be major or minor, just like 3rds. whether the 3rd and 7th are major or minor determine whether it's a minor chord, a major chord, or a dominant chord, which are extremely common chords in music. all of these chords use a perfect 5th so you're basically wasting a finger by playing it. root, third, and 7th tell you what chord it is, and your ear translates that harmonic information into a sound
>>
>>
>>130845254
Bro, I'm down a math rabbit hole with 6/2(1+2) and how even fucking mathematicians can't fucking agree on shit like order of operations.
>>
>>130845549
So, I have found that this device works best in the fx loop
>>
>>130845496
>all of these chords use a perfect 5th so you're basically wasting a finger by playing it
I disagree - the 5th completes a chord and makes it sound stable, it just depends what you want.
I see what you're saying but if I play a dyad it sounds melodic - full of harmonic information - but it doesn't sound complete. I think for rhythm a fifth is very important but maybe that's because I'm not really into Jazz I'm moreso into rock and pop-rock
>>
>>
>>130845595
>>130845496
Sorry should specified a root+third dyad since technically power chords (root+fifth) is also a dyad
>>
>>130845605
actions a little high on that one.
>>
>>130845584
It's designed to go in a clean channel or right in the fx loop. People use it wrong and wonder why it sounds wrong.
>>

>>
>>130845595
it's really a genre thing. but it's nice to understand what 1-3-5 vs 1-3-7 are doing. it's all about harmonic overlap. rock has more distortion and harmonics. jazz stays clean and leaves more room for different voices. a lead that sounds nice in a jazz mix would get lost in a rock mix and the rhythm leaving the 5th (the polar opposite of the tonic) out so the lead can hang out there is part of that
>>
>>130845852
one way you might use this in a rock context is to use shell voicings during a verse and then add the 5th for a heavy prechorus so it sounds more full without the lead

Sometimes there are some tiny details that don't gel with you naturally. Could be the angle of your pick, flat, downward, upward
Having your preferred downbeats or strong strokes as inside picking or outside picking. I can't into the fast pentatonic 2 notes per string quickly, I have to convert some cliche patterns as 3 notes per string or if I do 2nps theres some legato involved.

Check out Troy Grady there might be someone's method there that works for you. Or how Anton Oparin picks. And there is such a thing as "bad" technique or wrong picking that can cause some injuries in the long run - see Steve Morse who is the sickest purest alternate picker even alt picking 1nps arpeggios. But over the decades there must be something with his right hand technique that although it worked very well for him, probably caused him injury in his old age and now he can't pick that great as before.

Or just go hybrid or economy picking, that works too.

nope. thats possible w/out tripfagging. there are tons of sites you can keep a persistent id and amass a following of homosexual groupies, 4chan is not supposed to be one of them, it is anon for a reason. tripcodes are NOT for you to keep a personality alive indefinitely, they are for rare situations that call for a persistent but temporary ID where not using one would cause confusion within the thread. it not a substitute for a permanent screenname so you people can keep up with your blogposting

i always include a pic of my signature dot-grid paper or a page from the Real Book so you know you're getting info directly from my autistic guitar teacher
>>
>>130850926
I really hate that you drew the edge of the fretboard.
>>
>>130850901
I'd fuck her if she got an Epiphone Sheraton
>>
>>130850926
Does your teacher force you to memorize scales on the fretboard instead of telling you how to construct them, or teaching you the one shape you need to shift around?
>>
>>130850926
that's where you're wrong, reddit
>>
>>130850991
i used to just draw the circles. adding more made it more readable for me so i tend to draw the fret lines, strings, fret markers, and fretboard edges now
>>
>>130851005
one of the first things we started with was the 7 positions of the major scale and the melodic minor scale. i use these visualizations as a practice tool like flash cards to memorize them while i improvise over a tune. this one is for blue bossa which changes keys from Eb to Db. i've also been doing arpeggio exercises up and down the neck in different keys over different progressions. rarely do i just play a scale that's what i'm trying to get away from with my playing
>>
>>130851010
if this was reddit all the retards could band together and upvote their retarded shit and downvote the good shit. here you can decide for yourself
>>
>>130851013
I think the strings and fret lines should be sufficient.
>>
>>130851051
Makes sense. You remind me that I should get back to fretboard memorization, I've been neglecting it.
>>
>>130851063
That's implicit to the response. Namefan can't be tasked for that kind of mental workload.
>>
What do you define as musicality for a guitar player?
>>
>took the guitar with the flat frets after leveling to a different "luthier"
>he says it's fine
Normally, if I were sane, I'd accept it, since 2 different people told me they're fine. But I know they're not and even people in this thread said that it looks flat, as if someone had just leveled them.

I am buying myself the Music Nomad fret file and I'm going to fix it myself. I was going to buy the file anyway to work on my future "shitty guitar", but I guess I will practice on my main guitar.
>>
>>130851297
>practicing on your main guitar
I admire your bravery. By that I mean, don't.

if you want to learn the melodic minor scale, autumn leaves is a good tune for it. it's in E natural minor for the whole tune, but E melodic minor over the B7. so the positions don't move around
i'm currently trying to learn to play over altered dominants which involves going up a semitone from the V and playing the melodic minor. so in C major, the V is G, so the altered dominant scale is Ab melodic minor. so the positions do shift around
one of my favorite things about jazz is how many tunes there are, there's always a perfect tune to focus on a specific thing you want to learn
>>
I don’t care for the 7 positions. I prefer 5
>>
>>130851297
Either the two people know each other, or the frets are fine, or you're schizophrenic.
>>
>>130851289
musicality to me is how catchy the spontaneous ideas in your head are, and how much friction there is between those ideas and your instrument
>>
>>130851333
you can think of 6/7 (67!) and 3/4 as a single position. it's mostly about remembering the distance between positions so you can find opportunities to move during a line
>>
>>130851297
is it a brand new guitar? frets wear down pretty fast, it's normal for used guitars to have low/flat frets. my mustang's frets are going to need a replacement soon but in the meantime those low frets play smooth as fuck
>>
>>130844046
I prefer red, but in that color I would go for the Classic, with the zebra colored pickups. Really like the look of that one, would probably buy one if I didn't already have a Les Paul.
>>
>>130851289
Musicality in a guitarist is possessing the maturity to know what you want to evoke, how you want to evoke it, and whether your evocation is effective in regard to intention.

Study at least basic theory. Watch interviews with your favorite guitarists. The ones who do something that emotionally affects you enough with something in their playing. Usually they're happy to discuss their methods and their influences. Go down all the rabbit holes. Learn those mechanical and theoretical techniques. You don't have to imitate their entire style. Find things you like to do. Those things are what makes you sound like you. Eventually, all your tools in your toolbox are bespoke to you. Learn what you don't like and do it as little as possible. I'm built out of DiMeola's rhythm, Satriani's legato and devotion to the melody, Hetfield's palm-muting, Hedges' drones, Buck Dharma's evil bebop disco, Tom Wait's dissonance. It's a lifetime of pick and choose. Chinese black magic, Mr. Burton.

The AI is teaching you that a minor 5th exists when it in fact does not exist. Even a basic understanding of music scales should alert you to this being an error. The 5th of a major scale and a minor scale are the same note. If it gets something that simple wrong, how can you trust anything else it teaches you?

You will notice, if you'd actually read the Wikipedia article you yourself linked, that the explanation your AI gave you has nothing to do with this. The AI is teaching you that major and minor notes for every degree of a scale are always 1 semitone apart. The Wikipedia article has nothing to do with that and deals with the quarter note scale. In standard 12 note equal temperament, which is what you play on a piano or fret board of a guitar, this is not applicable.

perfect 4ths and perfect 5ths are called that because of how the notes line up

with C as the bass, you want to play a third. you have to choose WHICH third, the major or the minor. the major is the note "above the line" E. the minor is the note "below the line", Eb. with a fifth, there is no "above" or "below" the line. a perfect fifth is "on the line".

because there is no perfect third, you need to choose between a major third or a minor third

avatarfagging is not the same level... i post my gear (type-o schecter dude), but it is a fraction of my actual posts, and usually it is a post about itself, meaning it is a unique post for starting conversation rather than as a means to identify me when responding to something that has nothing to do with my gear or the gear being talked about. people who tripfag are attention seeking redditors who cannot fathom the concept of 4chan, and would be better off staying there rather than bringing there bs here. there are no updoots here, no credit is being given or received, your persona is nonexistent, you are here to post specifically, in regards to, or in the creation of, the content being discussed, and once that content ceases to exist by reaching page 10, no one is meant to remember or care that you ever here at all. this is the model of 4chan and anonymous posting, and it breaks the brain of the midwitted redditor, because we are not self-serving, we are irrecognizable, yet we are still a community unified by one thing and one thing only, and that is our degeneracy and memes. not by names, or subreddits or groups or cliques or other such bullshit

>>
>>130848555
Work your way up to it. Unlike chord changes and hammer-ons and shit like that, with alternate picking don't start with songs.
Once I could do the spider exercise at a steady pace I started alternate picking it because it's an even number of notes on each string which makes it easier.
Then I started alternate picking the minor and major pentatonic scales because you only play 2 notes on each string although you are thinking more about the scale shape.
Now I'm practicing alternate picking with diatonic scales and I'm also noticing that I'm starting to do it while playing certain song sections as it's quicker than just downpicking.
>>
>>130848555
It's incredibly important to learn alternate picking keep at it. No one was born good at guitar, everyone needs to practice especially the things they hate.
I started implementing alternate picking and now it's second nature

what kind of bridge goes on this thing?

thats a cavity for some kind of floating bridge, like Floyd Rose or some other kind of 2-point trem. Just search for a 2-point floating trem... that should get you started

THat's the body of a Samick TJ541. Takes a "KKT-2" licensed Floyd Rose. ANy licensed by FLoyd should fit, or maybe even a FR1000
>>
>>130853246
be careful here, you wanna take measurements of the posts and their distance from each other as well as the cavity size. it could be for a floyd, or it could be for some kind of fender-style 2-point trem. really depends on those measurements and the size/depth the of the cavity... might be too small for an actual floyd, I'm not sure just by looking at it, but that cavity is a specific size for the block that sits under the floating bridge and those things vary from manufacturer to manufacturer
>>
>>130853279
>>130853316
do you think it would work to put something like this on it, so i don't have to struggle with the floyd rose thing? i hate tuning floyds.
>>
>>130853373
To feed the strings thru that bridge, they have to go through the bottom (as far as I can tell). I don't see a way to do that on that guitar without routing a hole through the back. A single piece wrap around bridge might fit, but would leave that gaping hole visible.
>>
>>130853408
damn i didn't notice that, the strings DO have to go in from the bottom.
i guess i'll just look up a way to hide the cavity.
i really don't want an other floyd rose.
>>
>>130853455

>>
>>130853455
It could take a strat style 2 point trem. Just pay attention to the hole and post measurments

a top loading hardtail strat bridge might have enough clearance to miss the route if it's the kind that attaches to the body with screws in the corners

I will say that's probably the best thing you can do, however, I was pretty disappointed with my tremol-no. It was pretty janky, had to be tightened with pliers to feel secure enough for me to trust, and with that the gnurling on the nut gets grounded down to oblivion... at the end of the day I was left thinking that just blocking/unblocking it would be the more reasonable solution, bc you still have to take backplate off (or leave it off indefinitely) to access the tremol-no.

Honestly I think you should just get a diff body. Sell/gift that one, and get what you really want.

While I respect Ola Strandberg for reviving the headless guitar and actually bringing something to market (I was browsing the same headless forums while he was accumulating design ideas from the community), the amount of cost cutting that's taken place in the brand while raising prices doesn't make sense to me anymore. The neck carve is really all he has now that competitors have popped up. And I seriously considered buying and modifying a Salen Jazz with a sustainer and synth pickup (the pickup wouldn't work with the multiscale).

Started practicing guitar last August, have probably only had a handful of days in that time where I missed a day and didn't practice. I'm playing dont look back in anger by oasis because I've heard that song is a decent litmus test for beginner guitar players (lots of chord changes, fairly fast, simple strumming pattern). I can't play the whole song and I also just learned that the chords I'm doing aren't the actual chords they're playing on the record, I guess I found a more beginner friendly version, but its fairly close to the original.

I've gotten to the point where I feel like I'm not really getting any better even though I play every day. I'm not delusional, I didn't think I'd be a great player after a year, or even a decent intermediate player, but considering the amount of hours I've put into it I do feel like I should have a bit more to show for it. The only songs I can play all the way through are knocking on heavens door by bob dylan (because it's literally the easiest guitar song ever written), learning to fly by tom petty and linger by the cranberries which are also quite easy and have basic chords the whole way through. I also have memorized the 5 minor pentatonic shapes and the first major scale shape and practice those every day, but the only way I can play them is straight up and straight down like a robot, I have no clue how to actually make it sound like music

Not really sure where to go from here. I'm definitely not considering quitting, I'm going to continue to play even if I never improve beyond this point because it's just an enjoyable hobby. I remember when I started playing I told myself if I could just learn a few of my favourite songs that would be more than enough for me, and I still feel that way but I'm nowhere near being able to play any of them

they're both shortscale, so they'll sound a little darker than a jazzmaster, but it's different stokes for different folks

>fender’s lowest output weakest sounding guitar sounds the same as fender’s brightest and shrillest guitar
they sound like polar opposites, if anything mustangs sound like strats with weaker pickups.

The flame broil is what truly separates it from other goyslop burgers. They were .99c for the longest time.

Mustang is a thin and plinky sound, whilst the Jag-you-are has a thin and scratchy sound.

>low frets play smooth as fuck
But they're not evenly low, i.e. evenly worn out. It's gonna cause buzz and intonation issues (if you care about the 10 cents or so).

Honestly it's a fucking dream. Top 3 guitars I ever owned already for sure. It's very, very comparable to the Les Paul I owned a decade ago.

How about playing pentatonic sequences if you're feeling in a rut just playing them up and down? There are also other pentatonics that have good uses to explore.
>>
>pentatonic
lol we still doing this bullshit? Stop watching marty schwartz and learn the major scale
>>
Should I just learn scales/keys that fit my vocal range? I'm not in a band I just want to write music and sing it myself
>>
>>130858212
>the major scale
