buying a bass this weekend only ever played guitar. I was going to buy a squier jazz bass but the color I wanted is only available as a precision bass lol. So is the difference between the two super crazy? All I want to play is blues and blues rock and like the band type of music. Like I assume I can do everything of those with either one but like is one objectively better than the other?
>>
Im a bit under a year into playing and I recorded my first song. It was to learn to use reaper and trying vocal stuff. Some of the parts are pretty sloppy, but its good enough for a first attempt at a song. I'll probably move on, focus on technique with my instructor for a few weeks and make another song before I go to Japan at the end of the month. This song is Clubbed to Death with a Hitachi Love Wand.

for the genres you listed the p bass is better. the only place where a p bass isn’t that good is funk. for funk you need the low mids of a bridge pickup for the right sound but they’ll still work. p bass is the goat for a reason

Jazz bass actually sucks for jazz unless you are living entirely beyond the 12th fret. p bass sounds more like an upright bass which is the og and imo a better sound for walking jazz. I’d really recommend putting labella deep talking flats, lights or mediums on it if you’re going to play blues rock and jazz.

Why do some guitarists hate standard notation so much? I had a friend who was adamantly arguing to me about how it was a waste of time because he knows old dudes who never learned it. I like playing classical music so Ive been learning how to read the past few weeks and it has been very insightful. But idk I am autistic and only play alone, I like metal but playing a riff alone feels very boring compared to a piece made to be played with no accompaniment.

Rumors on the streets saying schizo got folded.

Anyone able to confirm this rumor?
>>
>>131419927
It's good to know, but it's not a perfect solution for guitar, since it tells you what you need to play, but not which strings to use. There are multiple ways to play the exact same notes on guitar, so a combination of tabs and standard notation is ideal.
>>
>>131420522
I can confirm non-sad-sacks-of-shit don't care
>>
>>131420417
Sometimes I forget that other guitarists don't have a manic all consuming obsession with guitar. To me practicing guitar is like eating, if I dont do it everyday I feel like shit. At least 70% of my thoughts have to be about songs or guitar and my fingers are constantly moving in patterns at work. I have to pick up my guitar first thing in the morning before work to fight back the encroaching despair. I dont even like thinking about gear or buying other guitars because it doesnt make me any better, which is why these threads make me feel like I dont belong.

I appreciate it man. I'd really like to perform by the end of next year. Ive had such great times at concerts that I wanna pay it back to the community and facilitate those good times for others. Not to mention, I just love music and need something else to pour time into, now that Im like 5 years into lifting and its kinda just rote.

Performing live is a different beast. Depending on the kind of music you play if the parts are mostly set in stone or there's a lot of places to improv/extend your jams you might want to have the pieces practiced til it feels rote. That's gonna be your safety net with all the nervousness/distraction and shit that can go wrong live. Ideally so much so that your conscious brain only has to deal with improvising or playing with the dynamics, technical issues like shit acoustics/monitoring/cant hear yourself or bandmates.
But at the same time don't get too hung up on it if shit ain't perfect yet and just go make music - sage advice from the late great Shawn Lane

>>
>>131419925
I use the cheapest piece of shit wireless unit I could find and latency has never been an issue. I assume a more sophisticated system would perform better.
I won't comment on tone loss or whatever, because it's not something that bothers me, so I haven't even tested that.

I have cablephobia so I'm never going back to wired shit.

>But at the same time don't get too hung up on it if shit ain't perfect yet and just go make music - sage advice from the late great Shawn Lane
I 100% agree with him here. I figured its best to just get making music early and often. I just view it as having fun and setting the groundwork for making better music in the future. I purposefully chose a very amateur friendly genre. Very simple chromatic riffs and vocals so distorted that I can place them over where I splice the riffs together so it flows better. It was a fun little exercise and I'll do it again when the mood strikes me, but I do really want to improve my technique. Its definitely lopsided from practicing tremelo way more than power chords and I want to change that. Honestly though, I'm very happy with how it turned out and it couldve been way worse. The fact that I saw the song through to the end is a win to me.

By the way, I also went through the same process of just having fun when I first picked up the instrument that he described. First like 6 months were me just fumbling my way through my favorite riffs. A month ago, now that I love the instrument, started seeing an instructor to clean up my bad habits before they're too engrained to root out.

>That's gonna be your safety net with all the nervousness/distraction and shit that can go wrong live. Ideally so much so that your conscious brain only has to deal with improvising or playing with the dynamics, technical issues like shit acoustics/monitoring/cant hear yourself or bandmates.
Im sure my first show will be a nightmare and as long as me and my gear makes it out the bar in one piece and not stolen, I'll be happy. I'll probably have my BC Rich Stealth be my performance guitar though.

HOW can my alternate picking be locked in one day but not the next
>>
>>131421422
Aye good for you man. And yeah getting a good teacher is a good call, it is definitely easier to learn the hard things the right way rather than unlearn incorrect shite and replace it with better mechanics way later.

>first show will be a nightmare
You'll get through it, and even if it doesn't go on as well as you would like to you'll forget it and have better/worse nights eventually. A beer or two goes a long way just to get a tiny buzz and the head out of nervousness and navelgazing, but not to get wasted as to play retarded. Also.. two is one and one is none. Not saying to carry 2 backups + the main on expensive stuff like guitars and amps but always good to have extra shit like cables, extension cords, strings and tiny bits and bobs that fail or disappear into the ether.. fukin picks and allen keys.

>>131421591

I’m tired of metal and classic rock (and for that matter blues has gotten stale too). Picked up country guitar rhythm and lead courses on truefire sale. I like to finger pick and like country guitar sounds and tones but not so much the music (aside from the classics like Cash and Haggard). I think it’s gonna be a nice refresh that I need from the what I see as a very metal-centric hobby (that genre takes up so much of the oxygen it’s kinda nuts to me). Anyone else here jump to country for a bit? How’d it go?
>>
>>131423439
If by metal you mean djent then yeah it's an oxygen sucker.
>>
>>131423455
djent isn't metal it's popcore.
>>
>>131423455
Hardly djent (although desu I don’t see djent as very technical subgenre if that matters to you) all I see is lately are influencers trying to sell their speed legato course or some pedal that is a derivative of the DS1 or Rat. Not saying there isn’t any interesting things happening in Metal. But for the longest time it’s felt like it hasn’t innovated coupled with the onslaught of sloptube teachers and content creators.

>>
>>131423661
not at all. real country originated from appalachian folk music which was born from scotch and irish music and instrumentation. fiddle, dobro, banjo, mandolin, and later the guitar. if your music doesnt have at least three of those its not real country. distorted guitar is automatically not country, rap is automatically not country.

look into a PJ bass, it literally has the best of both worlds. Jazz bass neck pickup is lackluster compared to a P but the P is a one trick pony with a single tone which can or cannot be the perfect fit. Adding that bridge pickup will make a huge difference and upen up a whole new world of possibilities.
>>
>>131416811
I think the drums, guitar, playing all that vocal noises all good.
Biggest problem by far is your EQ'ing. Way too much sub bass muffling up everying and super congested mids. Look into dynamic compressor to tighten up the guitar/bass. High/low pass everything- do each track one by one and adjust to taste IN THE MIX (not isolated). Give it a few passes and days, maybe look up some tips n tricks, try out different compressors that sorta thing. Mids just scoop lol it's metal. Fletcher Munson curve and all that.
Bravo dude seriously you could improve the sound quality 10x over with just eq'ing. Get TDR if you haven't and see about carving out some freq space for each track. Also check out free ai mastering plugins / services if you just wanna throw your track on and have it be one and done.

Thank you very much man. This was my first time doing it (and it shows). Totally on the fly over the span of like 2 hours blazed off my ass. It was actually my first time using Reaper (Im open to other software if you want to recommend it). I didnt do the drums though. I just found one I thought fit the track. Im probably gonna just leave this one as a turd and recycle riffs into a new song later. I just wanted to get a first attempt out of the way. I will definitely put what you said to practice next time.

>>131424695
Honestly. Thats exactly what I called it when I made it. I thought "i need to just shit out as many turds as possible so i get familiar with the writing process". Im glad he enjoyed it though. Ill keep playing, practicing, and learning.

Nah I love Reaper, stable af and everything is where it should be. Just certain stuff that you use frequently should be keybound like Glue since the workflow there is a little different than other DAWs.
Also sounds like there are some weird phasing issues just thought I'd mention it while I remember.
Nice dude you're already way ahead of most people and have the right mindset to get used to the writing/recording processes so they don't get your way.

Well thanks man. I'll keep playing and writing. The big goal is to perform by end of next year. I really would love to play some brutal hardcore or slam and see people beat the shit out of each other. I really enjoy being in the crowd and engaging in that, but I wonder how long I can manage to avoid injury unlike my friends. I think I'll be happy facilitating that for a bit. Also I always wanted to make a bit of goregrind since I was like 13, so this was a lot of fun.

I do wonder what my instructor will think of this song since his main project is a christian metal band. Very good player though and influenced most by Bodom.

I'll keep posting my stuff here and you'll know its me by pictures of those guitars. I don't think anyone else here plays a stealth lol. The song was actually played on the ironbird. I'll definitely keep what you said in mind because the mixing is what stood out to me and one of my friends. Also I really need to improve playing dbeats riffs at that speed. I could get in the groove for a riff, but the syncopation throws me off when I need to play the variation on the riff. I think it was just too fast for me. Also, if anyone wants to learn how to play this genre, Andrew Lee makes great videos on goregrind writing. He seems lame as a person and looks about as good as your average goregrind album cover.

https://youtube.com/shorts/VhaRpOP5nSw

Anyway, really fun stuff. Cant wait to play more.
