narrower and higher pressure tire IS faster
>>1959054No
>>1959085How is it not. Less friction
>>1959144Less casing flex leading to less hysteresis loss yes but more losses due to vibration. Also how higher pressures make you go up and down over road imperfections instead of just slightly deforming and going over them. Rolling drum tests only show the first one because of how smooth they are which is why higher tyre pressures and therefore narrow tyres were used so commonly, so if you're doing all your riding on a perfect smooth velodrome go nuts. Maybe aero reasons but if Dan Bigham as a massive aero nerd used 25mm tyres for the hour record then maybe that's a good reason to bin the 23s.
>>1959054yes it is OP but nobody except misinformed parrots are saying wider is empirically faster. The thing is, just because it's proven faster in lab conditions doesn't mean it'll make (you) faster. Yeah, you'll catch higher peak speed with 21s (does anyone even make 21s anymore?) over 28s but unless you're fit af, you'll fatigue out sooner from the harsher ride and produce a lower average speed. Just like how a "faster" bike won't actually make you that much faster, speed comes from within. You can min/max the bike all you want OP, in the end you'll still be a leglette with less than 3 horsepower

>>1959347I think 28s are pretty much the best from both worlds.Rode a lot of 23 and 25s and even tried out some 32 and 35s.Somehow 28s get the cushyness and comfort from 30+ tires and the speed and nimbleness from 23s without the drawbacks. Its also a better feeling not riding downhill on 8bars+ at 40mph.Rolling resistance seems also reduced compared to smaller ones.

>>1959054This dude be breaking with his dick
>>1959054This bike angers me. Its braking performance will be no better than a brakeless fixie. Either it's free and the brake has the disadvantage of requiring the rider to go one-handed or it's fixed and the brake is superfluous. Poor show.
>>1959367don't forget better braking from the larger contact patch, meaning corner entry has wider allowances.
>>1959350I rarely see 30s it's all 28 and 32
>>1959394>Its braking performance will be no better than a brakeless fixie.Depends on the rider I guess. I won't speak for you, but in my case your statement would definitely be untrue.

>>1959149I’ve seen results of these rolling drum tests 20 years ago in bike magazines and while those advantages regarding casing flex mentioned are true, there was the same absolute pressure put into each tire for comparison during the test cyclesSo these were interesting phenomenons to be observed under lab conditions, but e.g. who rides a 28mm tire at 8 bar, compared to someone normally using a 23mm tire with that (appropriate) pressure and same total system weight?

PSI is dependent upon a lot of factors...Tire Size matters the most, but also the weight of the rider as well, both are equally important! The larger the tire, the lower PSI you use due to volume of air in tire. For the record I got dusted on a road bike by a guy on a 27.5 inch trek with like 20 PSI in his tires on the road, so don't tell me what is faster. It's may be faster on a smooth rolling surface, but most bikes are NOT those slim tires, & I've sold A LOT of bikes, so, your post is vehemently situational, period.
>>1968856no
>>1971747yes
>>1971803>For the record I got dusted on a road bike by a guy on a 27.5 inch trek with like 20 PSI in his tires on the road, so don't tell me what is faster.I believe it. I am not being sarcastic
>>1964608Actually, dipshit, I use a higher tire pressure specifically for SPEED, not because I'm fat. My weight has nothing to do with my decision.
>>1959054Then why dont you ride solid 15mm tires?
>>1959054try that on a dirt track
>>1962300That seatstay suspension angle seems like it would be perfectly perpendicular (useless) to the direction of deformation. Am I missing something?
>>1977262It's a trackbike. Some dude spaced fork and headset so that the frame sits at a different angle than it usually would.
Rolling resistance is determined by contact patch shape and pressure, and energy lost due to tire deformation. Even for a perfectly smooth surface it isn't necessarily true that smaller is faster. But road cycling is filled with lore, boomers and retards making a lot of noise. Combined with physics and tire physics being difficult subjects for most people topics like this are excellent bait.8/10 OP.
>>1977263>It's a trackbikeNo, that's a road bike. Those are definitely brakes and derailleurs, multiple chainrings even, so I'm guessing the number of gears is more than one.The fork steerer is definitely some weird suspension fork, judging by the smaller "steerer" diameter probably entering a larger one.And I'm not even talking about the fork. I'm talking about the seatstays. You didn't even answer my question.Did you just decide to write some made up on the spot bullshit to seem smart on an anonymous image board and think nobody will notice? Are you stupid?
>>1977263Doesn't look like a track bike to me with the shifter bosses, cable stops and derailleur hanger? Does look like someone was fucking with the steerer though
>>1977263Source?>>1977262My guess is that the bike has front and rear suspension, since a short search turned up Cinelli experimented with it at some point.
>>1977263you're thinking of a criterium bike, sometimes referred to as a crit bike. Both track bikes and road bikes can fit the role of a crit bike but the underlying philosophy of a crit bike is a bike with sharp trackbike-like geometry, stiff triangles, but low gearing for explosive acceleration, designed for racing in small circuits with sharp corners.
>>1971521I'd pay good money to weinstein her
>>1964606It would be more aerodynamic if it were absent.
>>1977262Probably the idea is that the chainstay flexes near the BB and the rest of the rear triangle is rigid. The suspension element would be tangential to that movement.
>>1960593how? and is that a computer on the top tube? actual retard shit.
>>1977310When i was a kid and raced criterium, i had a 650b steel frame Razesa with a 48T, tubulars oc, Shimano 105 with no STIs still...Wish i still had that bike.

>>1987180Lets roll down from the top>fat tirenope. That uses a radial tire that is a ton stiffer and heavier.A "fat" tire motorcycle would be a cruiser with an even thicker and denser makeup. Like a 150/80-15.That's probably has a 120/70-17 and a 150/55-17.Let's not forget you have 6 speeds, and 30ish hp or 22,000 watts.Let that sink in. 22,000 watts of power, where as an average human bicyclist is probably putting down 100-200watts.
>>1959054in my experience noon my 100psi shwalbe marathons i feel every tiny bump and the grain of the road the gravel it all slows me down i have to be very picky about my linesi have to slow down for potholes if i cant hop or swervecornering with hard skinny tyres on anything but smooth dry tarmac is scary as shit and i end up having to brake more for turns>inb4 skill issuemaybe im not rly a roadie so im still learning how to corner on the road on tires like thisregardless i am slowermy gfs 1.95 conti double fighters at 60ps are fasterthey roll smoothely over all that shit and i can corner muuuuch more confidently so i dont need to brake when theres a bit of gravel mud or wet in a corneri think outside of aerodynamics and perfect tarmac thinner and harder is slower, much slowerplus on the wider softer tyres i can take shortcuts over rougher terrain that i just cant do on the marathons
>>1959144post saucesas far as i know there is no hard evidence only speculation based on ideal conditionsin the real world based on actual experience it seems to not be truefat tyres dont seem to roll any worse to me and in not ideal conditions (the real world) fatter tyres roll faster
>>1988360It's obviously a 110 and 140. Nobody makes 150/55.That's still a relatively wide tire, thoughever, a much lighter prototype racing bike of that displacement uses a 90 or 100 front and a 115 or 120 rear.
>>1959054If you only ride on smooth glass, sure.
>>1959054My favorite feeling is when my tire pressure is dialed in just right and the tire deflection under cornering rebounds so predictably, I love it. It has a weird feeling of being soft and firm at the same time, it's kind of like that feeling of a really good pencil eraser
