A few students noticed that their temporary licenses were printed and signed by the exam instructor before the flights began but after their oral was over. With all the hiring slowdowns at the majors and LCCs. for those at the regionals, anticipate being where you are for the next 2-3 years. Once hiring resumes in 2025 at the majors, the competition will be greater, and the pool of captains will be larger.

One I talked to had a goal of 15/85: 15 days on and 85 credit hours. Others prefer a complete split duty schedule to maximize time at home, and those with high enough seniority only work certain days a week and participate in small group chats of other senior captains to trade and drop to make their personal plans work. It really depends on the individual.

If you don’t, find something else. “Making it” is relative; a regional captain will still make pretty good money compared with the general working public, but not compared to what a legacy captain would make. Time off can be difficult, but not impossible depending on a lot of stuff. Air ambulance can be pretty shit considering a lot of them will spend their 7 or 10 on at a crew house waiting for a call. Firefighting requires a lot of low level time and previous Ag experience, which means you will probably have to slog it out spraying fields somewhere for a while. Bush pilots don’t make a ton, the work can be hazardous, MX can be hit or miss because the profit margin on those operations is slim, and you’ll live in areas where milk is like $10+/gal. Air Force/reserve is like a 6 year commitment, and unless you plan on doing that for your entire career most end up applying for the airlines later anyways. Also NG is very competitive, so good luck. There are upsides and downsides to every path. I didn’t think I would enjoy the airlines, and I’m not sure this will be a forever thing, but I’m super glad I did it.
