I'm a purist, but the idea of e-mtb is growing on me. Would be amazing to have a long travel full sus bike that I can climb steeply and do 100 mile days on. But no doubt I'd need to carry an extra battery for that and the cost is just prohibitive realistically. Don't see the prices of used e-bikes going down much either, unless the battery is exhausted since the motor+battery will hold value more than other parts.

Found some places renting out full-size Levo’s for $100 each, gonna rent one myself (who wants to try an ebike) and my friend (who wants to buy an ebike). He wants to hit the pedal-up bike park, get a bunch of laps in, but I’m thinking we could do that on unpowered bikes just as easily. I’m thinking a moto trail system with long epic rolling trails, thinking it’ll complement the heavy ebike weight better than bike park jumps and also let us really stretch out that motor power. There’s also a long mountain trail about 3 hours away that I know is an ebiker’s favorite, but I’m worried about 5 hours of freeway driving with two full size ebikes on the back. All other nearby trail options I know of are off limits.

E-bikes are a product of the bike companies jumping on the fact that gasoline prices are ridiculous, people want to save money on it, and regular bikes are not popular with all the obese people because they're too fat and unfit to ride them worth a damn, and class-1/2 e-bikes (i.e. pedal assist) give them the *illusion* that they're getting exercise, when really they're not doing shit. Then there's the people who buy the cheap e-bikes from overseas companies that have a switch to change them from class-1/2 to class-3, and they're out on bike paths that are not designed for it or allow class-3, they're riding >20mph, don't have the skill to handle a bike at that spped, and it's so damn heavy that it can't maneuver quickly in an emergency on a narrow bike path to start with. Where I live the rangers see all these motorized things and know it's just a matter of time before accidents happen but the laws allow it all as 'mobility devices'.

-Long remote smooth trails are better than garbage bike parks full of suicidal midlife crisis men snapping their wrists.
-Fat seats are based. If thin seats were more comfy, motorcycles would use them. Fattmaxx your saddle and see for yourself.
-99% of commercial mtb tyres are overgripped and overpriced as a result. Plus they rob your rolling speed.
-Manufacturers now use 203 discs to compensate for shitty calipers. Larger rotors get damaged easier.

Uphill is scourge of cycling, It can only be overcome with an electric motor, but it makes the bike much heavier
I wish Mars would be colonized soon, it would be much easier to drive uphill there without motor

I have been telling you for over a year to give some slicks a go. I was running the maxxis refuse fiull slick for the past few years. Recently a dog stick snapped 2 of my rear spokes and since i had to take the tires off to do the wheel work i decided to change things up a little. The maxxis receptor is a gravel tire i had no idea existed. Its 120 TPI and i am pretty darn sure its one of the fastest rolling 27.5 tires you can get. Its insanely fast. Hyperlite wheelsets and gravel tires on a full power EEB is pretty awesome.

You keep saying this but in my area the only trails you could ride up are literally dog walker paths. Good luck riding up a rock slab or a rock garden that's almost as steep.

that's what my friend claims too but in reality he leaves it on full assist mode and won't come on any long rides incase his battery dies
he is also speed limited to 25mph and can't put down power past that without motor because his gearing sucks
he also keeps sliding out around corners when trying to keep up with me because his rear hub motor is heavy and makes the bike handle like shit
don't get me wrong he's my nigga and im glad to go ride bikes with him, but if i was tempted to buy an ebike before from all this online shilling, i'm not anymore.

I don't hate people who ride E-mtb or anything but I can bitch for days about the bike itself


you're adding 20 lbs to the frame, 75% increase in weight, that's heavier than strapping a roadbike to your actual mtb.

This means you NEED the system to work for it's own weight. When battery die, how much fun are we having?

a 5lb motor is cool. 7 lb is ok. but 20 lbs and permanently changing the frame? no way. there has to be better ways.

Also, the pricing is fucking nuts. comparing the tag on that E-bike, you could get the elite components on the same model minus the pedal assist system, and it'd weigh like 30lb not 55. FFFFFUCK

I'd like something closer to an e-gravel bike. something that could do dirt, light trails, and also be more at home on the road.
I ride as much as I can manage to fit in after work while there's still light out, and my probable riding area is bisected by a large hill that makes rental-spec hatchbacks struggle to clear it without a head start. If a car can't do it, how could I expect to manage in my limited riding time without giving myself a heart attack?
maybe actual emtbs will lighten up enough that I would feel comfortable riding it with no assist until I wanted to hit one of the "oh fuck" hills

No one ITT hates on electric bikes more than other vehicles. What you're witnessing is people not being okay with the motorists pushing their agenda according to which their motorvehicles were in fact not motorvehicles but bicycles if the accelerator comes in the form of a pedalcrank.
