well bros my first time as a 3rd mate, 5 months in... so far it's a mixed bag.

So far we've just been rotating around Indonesia and China transporting coal but the next voyage is Korea for Turkey (around Africa) and that's where I will most likely be headed home in 2-3 months. There were some good days mostly in Indonesia as both captains would allow the ship to be turned into a floating whorehouse, I fucked 6 women during our three stays in Indonesia but there were also hard as fuck days where I'd not get sleep for days, specially in china with all the fucking river maneuvers. Also the difference from the mindset of a cadet to one of a OOW is huge.

been putting in work to my best ability and I think it's well received by the chief and captain, all in all so far proud of myself

So, I've just found out that sonar pulses apparently sound nothing like in movies/video games.

ships have radar
they have an echo sounder but the transponder is located on her keel

sonar is for submarines
>>
>>2010098

Isn't that literally what sonar is, just directed downward?
>>
>>2010102
yes but on ships it's just used for checking the depth below your keel and using those soundings to cross reference on your chart and making sure where you are, or if you are dropping anchor making sure you have sufficient depth to allow for a 5:1 ration for length of chain put down

echo sounders just spit out numbers

using sonar for collision avoidance is a submarine thing

CHE on a new tug. $150k per year, great schedule. Company contracts out all repairs on major systems. PLCs everywhere, random alarms going off all the time that are impossible to diagnose without mfg licensed software, company won’t provide it, mfg techs take months to show up unless the boat actually can’t do jobs.

I feel like i get paid just to suffer and lose sleep. The absolute impotence is driving me insane. I know more about electronics and PLCs than any other engineer at this company but it’s irrelevant without the tools for the job.

Got so frustrated I started looking for a shoreside job, realized I’d take a $60k pay cut. Decided to make some more coffee.

The newest systems are so complex that even the service techs have no idea what’s going on most of the time. I hate this industry so much but I could never drive to work every day and only get two days off and make way less money. It’s such a trap bros. Golden handcuffs fr.

Oh also Philippino crews are cool. Speak English and are friendly and communicative. Chinese crews have visible hate on their faces and shout gibberish and act like it’s our fault, don’t even make standard hand signals.

Power generation or transmission control operations. The guys who sit in an air conditioned room and look at screens of the grid and divert power away from poor people neighborhoods during emergencies or shortages. You need an NERC operator cert but I’m no stranger to technical tests and I’m good with electricity and generation, and the duties of a marine engineer are similar enough: monitoring systems and switching generators and transformers etc.
That and chemical/manufacturing automation controls operator. In my region these jobs top out around 90k and that’s a hard pay cut.

bit of a dumb question but i'm about to go on my first trip and i am boarding the ship on the other side of the world.
im flying on a mariners ticket which has a 40kg (88lb) luggage allowance but max weight per bag is 23kg (50lbs).
im away from home at the minute but need to order luggage now.
i'd rather just have one check-in bag but i've no idea how much that is going to weigh.

anyone can give me a rough idea of how much a 80l hold all filled with mostly clothes is going to weigh? is that likely to be over 23kg/50lbs? i honestly have no frame of reference for this. i'm not taking anything heavy such as boots since all PPE is provided onboard. and my laptop etc is going in my carry on bag.

If you want to become a deck or engine rating the best route is to do an apprenticeship. Able Seafarer Level 2 apprenticeship.
this apprenticeship doesn't technically require maths or english qualifications. they are supposed to offer it as part of the curriculum for those that need it. as far as im aware the RFA is the only employer offering this apprenticeship who actually does this. commercial companies require you to have maths and english because it allows them to save money by cutting out the 3 weeks of maths and english from the course content.
so i'd imagine the RFA is your only option.

It's the same thing. I assume you're talking about the apprenticeship so just go ahead and apply even if you don't have everything in hand. Word got out about how they drastically shortened the program at the start of this year so the classes are booked several months out with guys that only hold a twic and passport. Or you can just skip the STCW shit (which would cost you somewhere around $1k out of pocket if you didn't get it for free) and go look for work on a tug right now instead

about to go on my first ship and wondering what kind of knife i should take as a deck rating?
i've got a leatherman and i know they supply you with a rigging set once onboard but it was mentioned that a lot of people carry their own knife.
what sort of knife though? fixed blade? flip knife? serrated edge or no?
>>
>>2013219

Depends on who you work for. I live several states away from my homeport but I do 60/30. I'm changing to a new job that's 21/21 and gonna keep flying. If I did shorter hitches than that I think the frequent flying would get aggravating, especially now that our airports are becoming third world.

>>
>>2013967
My bad, I misunderstood you. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think it is the only route.
>>
>>2013967
When you’re a level 1 mariner the hardest is grinding EXP to level up. The big quest givers won’t take you because your level is too low. Once you’ve leveled up and specced into a specific class, you can live almost anywhere and the quest rewards will cover your travel costs.
In order to grind EXP they made the entry level unions: SIU, SUP, IBU are the ones I know about. They run you through the tutorial and give you endless low level quests. The problem is that you can only accept the quests if you’re in HarborTown and wait around at the hall. In order to prevent bots from farming the quests they require you to be physically present and wait for new quests to be posted. Unfortunately some people who are just not able to level up beyond the tutorial instead figure out how to milk it for every little advantage, and because their account is so much older than yours, the hall gives them preference on quests. They get the high gold reward quests with little danger or work, so just starting out you’ll get the worst quests in gold payment. The good thing is that the exp is all the same and that should be your main concern. Once you level up to officer the real game gets unlocked, though at that point you’ll need to spec your character it’ll determine exactly what kind of quests you’re allowed to do.

If you’re nowhere near HarborTown and can’t afford to move there, you should probably change class to truck driver and find the trucking guild, it’s similar to Mariner in a lot of ways.
>>
>>2013967
SIU doesn't post any of their jobs online. If you complete their program you'll have a bunch of endorsements, a rating that employers want, and just enough seniority to not leave the hall empty handed as your reward. Like >>2014006 said, at that point you can live almost anywhere and it won't kill you to visit your hall every couple of months for work
>>
>>2013904
If you're American and want to work on a cruise ship for the sake of just being on the water go on indeed or glassdoor and search for NCL to take a job with them as a dishwasher or whatever pussy shit they hire for on the Pride of America. Shit pay, shit hours, shit work, shit living quarters but your training is free, you'll get to see Hawaii, and have gay men and a variety of women (who will more than likely be inebriated and be of wildly varying qualities in appearances) throw themselves at you.

For yachts mandatory watching: Below Deck Seasons 1-3 and assume you won't be getting nearly enough time to decompress in between charters as the show's editing makes it seem.

Any other 3rd / junior engineers feel like they're eating shit constantly?
Anytime i reach a point of thinking "that mustve been all the dumb things i could do" i break something in a different but equally stupid way.
>>
>>2014067
You can read all the manuals in the world but most of your knowledge will come from hands on experience. It builds on itself over years until people think you’re a genius, but really it’s because you with saw someone break it or broke it yourself before.

My approach was always to be very cautious but occasionally go way out on a limb following a hunch fix stuff that others were stumped by. If it works out, you’re a hero and everyone loves you. If you break something, you’re a useless idiot. Thems the rules.

If you’re an academy grad new 3AE then it’s kind of expected that you’re useless until you’re actually in the real world for a while. I have my 3AE but never sailed on it, i hawsepiped up to Chief limited 1600 on tugboats. At least on my boat if i make a minor mistake I can cover it up and fix it without anyone else noticing.

Legal cargo very rarely has the same need for speed as drugs because there is no need to avoid detection and interception. And the timesensitive transports that do occur (organ transplants come to mind) go by air.

How hard is it to transition from commercial fishing to a real maritime job? Amazingly enough I'm not a retarded crackhead felon. Can get certs and pass background checks, tons of seatime. A permit will cost about 150k and you probably can't get a loan without experience or being a state resident. You can lease a vessel if you can find one. Probably 20k up front and 20% of gross revenue. Or buy a starter boat for 200k. Then you put the net in the water and pick 100k lbs of fish.
Then the hardest thing in your life becomes trying to find a job to occupy your time for 10 months out of the year because the money isn't good enough to build a retirement on but it's way too good to not do. Now answer my question

Typical retard fishing trash. Literally all this information is freely available at your fingertips with an internet search.

If you actually manage to get an MMC and STCW (lol lmao) you might get work with SIU and pick your schedule, but most companies that hire directly avoid people like you because fishing is your primary concern and you’ll bail on your hitch if they don’t cater to your special needs. That and you’ll be going in as entry level when you’re used to being a big deal on your cute little boat, and you really won’t like the reduction in your status.

But whoever put them on shipping -usually dey uncle/cuzz who's a "cappin" or bosun-probably doesn't know anything outside of SIU/MSC or the fact that over the past year entry level shipping contracts at either place have become practically unobtainium because of the sheer volume of entry level guys they've crammed into their hiring/training/job pipelines

Lmao that one cunt who tells literally everyone to go to academy and casually drops that both her and her husband are academy grads and they clear a combined 400k/yr or some shit. She’s insufferable.

I used to do detailed replies on there for people who were trying to get started out who didn’t seem retarded or gay, but I stopped caring. Haven’t looked at that sub in a year or more.

Deckies are dumb and don’t really do anything, but they get to be outside and wear polos and khakis on watch.
There’s also far more competition for jobs and work politics for advancement, so they’re all very experienced at sucking up and manipulating and backstabbing.

Engineers are permanently angry because they actually have do work every day and stuff is constantly breaking, usually because the deckies did something wrong. There’s a permanent shortage of engineers so you can basically take your pick of jobs and are highly valued (if not a retard) and never have to play politics or worry about your future. But, engineers are dirty and stinky.

GAAAAAAY

That sounds more like it. Thank you

He doesn’t know what he’s talking about because he’s an engineer

Only valid point he made is that engies have more opportunities to transition to shore side eventually

Funny story I was slacking a line by hand back aft and on this ship we had a policy where we had to call the ecr to let them know when we were powering on the winch
So anyways i’m letting out a bit of line by slacking it on the warping drum and the CHIEF ENGINEER came out of the galley and yelled at me for not calling the ecr. For using my hands. To slack. A mooring line.
They really have zero clue on sailing or anything related to the field, they just know how to fix the shit pipes and come up to the bridge for no reason and be annoying

I happened upon an article outlining competition among seafarers unions in the U.S. essentially locked into competing with each other as shipping companies jump between unions to pay the least and merchant mariner captains and chief engineers making relatively little in pay for the hours and experience demanded along with few shoreside jobs for those aging out of the fleet.

I'm still getting to grips with the status and makeup of the industry in the U.S. at least but I'm also interested in working in the prospect of occasionally working for foreign international companies if that's ever possible.

Anybody here have better insight?
The narrative seems to be that entry pipelines are full right now, but somehow young people are also overlooking the industry or leaving it early before achieving the ranks of the veterans aging out en masse.

How much industry demand is there actually for new labor in the U.S.? Could the licensed unions along with the ILA and even SIU consolidate in the future and could magic government money/credit come along and justify higher wages across the board if the prime rate comes back down the next cycle?
>>
I think I really want to enter the industry and work as hard as I can up front and get that valuable experience, and I have no prior experience, and I'm getting on in age now, but I can also see the other transportation sectors in the US have already negotiated their new contracts and union couriers on land, and even prior military are making relatively much more for much less investment.
Still trying to figure out if a Navy or CG enlistment with intent to join the industry could ever make sense by any contorted logic.
>>
going to be taking the tests for the siu apprenticeship program soon, anything to be particularly worried about or is it just a literal retard filter?

Was it this article?

It makes sense that SIU’s pipeline is full at the moment as they’ve been heavily recruiting for the last few years trying to make sure they have enough people coming in to cover their pension obligations in the future.

Unlimited tonnage captains and chiefs make close to 200k or above. It’s not as much purchasing power as they would have had 30 years ago but it’s still quite good, especially when you compare other jobs that pay as much are things like highly experienced professional certified engineers (guys designing rocket components and such).

The big problem right now is that it takes almost a decade of experience in order to achieve those licenses and the work force is about halfway through the boomer exodus.

The academies turn out something like 4 deck to every one engineering officer, so the shortage is less there but it’s still a problem. Academy students graduate as 3rd mates or 3rd engineers so they still have years to go before they hit master/chief.

As someone who didn’t go to academy and now makes around 150k I feel it’s worked out very well for me. I can’t possibly imagine driving to and from work every day and only getting two days off at a time.

>>2017247 I’ve known a lot of ex CG guys who work in shoreside admin for maritime, but it’s not really an advantage for mariners. Military is only worth it for the GI bill, VA loan, VA disability payments and military hiring preference on some jobs.
>>
>>2017241
Well, I appreciate both of your input. Sounds like the deck get to do more sailoring, and the engineers keep everything working to facilitate that.
>>
For someone that makes it a serious career, have there been people to get time in on both pipelines? I'm talking about enthusiasts taking both deck and engineering jobs on occasion to get experience on both sides, certifying for both deck and engine ratings before ultimately finishing on one branch of licensure, or is that straight up impossible?
>>
Nevertheless the information has been invaluable.
>He does it for free
>>
>>2017423
It's probably way more common on small boats. Personally I only knew one guy who held both unlimited oceans licenses. More commonly you'll come across unlicensed guys who went up the ladder in one department before switching and starting over in the other for whatever reason.
>>
About to be an ET and only sailed electrician so don’t really know that much about bridge electronics aside from technical knowledge. For the mates here what normally goes wrong with your electronics? What do you see eto’s working on alot?

anyone boarded a ship in the Maldives (Male)?
what they like at the airport?
expecting an interrogation since it's an unusual port for crew transfers.

What about ecdis, radar, radio shit? You ever had failures?
>>
>>2017612
Yes, any sort of malfunction of bridge equipment is a huge ordeal and we’ll possibly go to anchor depending on where we are
There’s redundancies, at minimum 2 ECDIS, 2 Radars (but we need x/s band anyway so we need at least 2) usually there’s more radars, vhf we have 2 minimum but same thing we need 2 one for ch.16 one for local vts (never had a vhf go down) echo sounder is less essential but there’s only one of them and it’s needed for anchoring so if that goes down it’s either high or low priority depending on going to anchor, Nav lights we have redundancies but i’d say they are the most likely to go, they are required and most ships keep them on at all times so they burn out quick it’s just replacing a light but it’s working at heights so that’s some paper work and harness’s

Steering gear you either have two sets (one aux one normal) or two identical power units, if there’s a steering failure we are for sure going to anchor. Bow thruster generator i’ve had blacked out the ship because the grate for the cooling water the engineers never cleaned and it got clogged and the bow thruster overheated or something. That was fucked, immediately tied up in the middle of the channel.

2nd mate is “in charge” if the bridge equipment so he’s read all the manuals so ask him stuff but for the most part it’s nav lights. Most everything has redundancy but if we’re on redundancy we don’t want to be and need it fixed asap. Any bridge equipment failure it’s part of the officers job to report it immediately, the captain will probably tell the chief engie and the chief will send you up to the bridge. Like I said there’s manuals and schematics for everything it’s all on the bridge. As far as the software and functionality of the equipment you don’t have to know that the officers know, you just fix the power.
