I got caught in the rain today. The bike and ass are covered in god knows what. I bought the fenders right after I got home. What’s your excuse for not having fenders now that’s it’s fall especially?
I have a removable tail fender. I used to run full fenders until I realized that tail fenders were 90% as good as full fenders with 10% of the effort
>>2019416>I bought the fenders right after I got homeIf you bought THOSE fenders you need to return them immediately, they'll do almost nothing. You want SKS longboard. They are the only fenders that will actually stop water from flying to from your front wheel. No other models go low enough. You can fix a mudflap on the shitty fenders if you must.I put fenders on every bike and barely have to clean the chain, crank, or bottom bracket because it also blocks dirt and dust when things are dry.. Fenders are essential.
>>2019418>tail fenders were 90% as good as full fenders with 10% of the effortUseless
>>2019418>I used to run full fenders until I realized that tail fenders were 90% as good as full fenders with 10% of the effortThat can't be true because the tail ones don't cover the bottom of the wheel at all. Your ass may be okay after a ride but your bike will still be very gross. Your feet and pants too.>>2019419I got Axiom Flascheguard 700/41. They seem to go very low. One thing I didn't realize and at the guy at the store didn't tell me either is that that model is meant for the tires that are 23-30 mm whereas mine are 35mm. Hopefully it's ok or their tech will realize the mistake and put on something bigger.
>>2019422I have run 32mm fenders on 43mm tires, didn't have a problem. Most of the water flies off the center of the tire
>>2019422If you ride enough you'll realize nothing will keep your drivetrain clean except not riding in the rain at all which is another discussion altogether. Fenders are for casual NPCs
>>2019462I ride every day. If it's actually raining I would take the subway but usually the issue is riding after the rain. There have been a few days when the weather was fine but it had been raining all night so the road was wet. Fenders would at least keep my clean. The drivetrain I can always wash later when I get home.
>>2019460interesting, hopefully it's fine then, the bike is only a couple of months old so I doubt the rubbing will be an issue too. I'm hoping it'll look nicer with more narrow fenders too
>>2019464Get a clip on for the back and get a second chain and wax your 2chainz
>>2019469I don't like the way they look and I'm pretty sure my legs will get dirty with those too
>imagine buying shit that doesn't have fenders stockngmi
>>2019474My bike is a hybrid. I want to keep it for at least another half a year, maybe more to see if I want to lean more into road cycling on the weekend or realize the vast majority of the game I’m on the bike is when I’m commuting. If it’s the latter I’ll get a proper city bike with stock fenders and a rack.
>>2019462rent free
got the fenders and they rattle...
>>2019416That fender looks terrible.
OP here. I'm actually very happy with the fenders. Will still try to get the front fender to stop rattling sometimes but other than that they have been great. I'm now able to commute to work even after a rain.
>>2019416I don't have fender mounts
>>2019416I only ride in good weather and only for fun/exercise.Imagine the water destroying all your metal parts too. Nah kiddo, i leave the good old roadbike in the shed on shitty days
>>2019419>They are the only fenders that will actually stop water from flying to from your front wheel.Unless you jerry rig a front fender out of a rear fender. And then rear fender out of a rear fender for a bigger bike.
>>2021308You don't need fender mounts. Just fenders made to mount like this.>expensive/don't fit my bike/can't get those hereNot an excuse. Regular fenders plus liberal application of 3D printing, zipties and bent coat hangers, and you're in.
>>2021356>3D printingpicrel is my recent whacky fender install
>>2021394then brazed one of those boys up just like a few times before. But I never felt easy about that shit since when considering the specified torque it's safe to assume those fasteners are produced to a standard like 8.8 or grade 5 or a spec very similar to this. And after brazing you get god knows what. It worked before and even if your final product performed like A36 it would still be plenty, mathematically. Still...
>>2021395... chose to cut it to length, turn it down and thread it and put it aside. What I tried instead is picrel and it worked really nice. Just used threadlocker / superglue. And yes you'll need to use a spanner to do up your breaks but you get to mount fenders in a clean fashion.
How little of a gap under the fender does /n deem acceptable?Does any of you /n/ogs have a story to share where something was picked up and caused a minor or major catastrophy when it interfered with the fender, ot is all that just BS?
>>2021670I sometimes get branches stuck between my wheels and fenders when hammering through woods, but they don't do any damage and they would get stuck no matter the clearance.I run ~1cm clearance on 2" tires and it's great. 5mm clearance was absolutely fine on my road bike, but I no longer commute on it, so I took its fenders off
>>2021670I've had them get absolutely clogged up with snow, mud or wet leaves but nothing bad ever happened. Other than it being annoying as shit frankly. And it the gap is small enough they will start to chirp on the tires which is obnoxious.
>>2021769How do you even know it's clogged up if nothing bad ever happens? Wouldn't that make you much slower or even stop you entirely?
>>2021882The clogging up with snow issue is pretty evident. You can hear it and feel it. You can also see it at times.
>>2021670it's less about gap to get stuff through and more about not rubbing on the tire. if you shake the bike and the fender doesn't touch, it's good. the closer to the tire you get, the more self-cleaning you get.
I have the SKS Bluemels Style.Yes, I ripped my hair out during installation, but I never have to deal with dirt on the frame or any kind of splashes ever again.
>>2022528I just ordered myself a set of SKS B69 Bluemels yesterday because my current Zefal half fenders have inadequate coverage in heavy rain. The Zefals are like 1/3 the cost and are easy to install but the rear just doesn't protect enough. Full fender options for wide tires are limited.
