my chain on my bike fucking snapped today
>>
>>2020689
you broke it and rejoined it with a chain tool / regular pin right?
>>
>>2020693
no I walked home 3 miles like a bitch because I forgot to pack it
>>
>>2020696
i mean before it broke had it been monkeyed with ?
It's pretty unusual for a chain that has been joined in an orthodox way to ever break. And so it's really not necessary to carry a chain tool unless you're on some janky shit.
>>
>>2020714
yeah idk, I had like 100 miles on it and it snapped. This is the third chain, the first two lasted for a normal amount of time. I think its new cog / cassette time
>>
>>2020689
A few years back I had a chain break multiple times, turns out Amazon seller was selling fake Shimano chains.

Meh, keep riding.

I've had to tighten my headset a few times after swapping the top / bottom bearings. I'd think I have enough preload, then after a ride it would be loose. Quite annoying but seems good now.

Yesterday I noticed 2/3 of the cleat bolts were missing from my right (dominant foot) shoe after I fell on the grass trying to unclip. Made it the remaining 13 of the planned 50 miles home without further drama. In the ending I wound up doing just 46 miles - with a dead phone I had to improvise the route having lost my Komoot directions. It was still a good time despite some setbacks - enjoyed the fall foliage amongst the farm fields and orchards here in New England. I forgot one of the places I liked only accepted cash though so no apple dumplings for me, I brought a cliff bar with me anyway.

Pace wasn't too bad considering the climbing and traffic involved, was definitely cramping at the end but not full locking up type of cramps which are way worse and also put me in the grass once.

Got a little DJI Neo drone to aid in my ocd pass time of monitoring construction around town. It doesn't like the wind, and there is a lot of wind this time of year.

>>2021577
>handlebars not being straight has absolutely nothing to do with preload

It does if I assume the bar or wheel didn't move during the preload adjustment before I retightened the stem bolts. I had the wheel pressed against a wall and tried to be careful not to bump the bars, but I must have.

>>
>>2021589
>It does
>stem bolts
I'm assuming ahead set from here on.
It's still independent of the preload you've set. You simply failed to tension your ahead set to where the bolts become self-locking. Your bars then going out of whack and your headset loosening later are both symptoms of a common cause but seperate effects.

Fully bonked after 2 hours even when going up climbs in the lowest gear / not breathing too heavy. Had 3 more climbs on empty before I could find food.

Are climbs that more taxing and you need to get fuelling right? I feel like I can go full gas repeatedly up bumpy terrain for long distances and I never bonk.
>>
>>2021815
>fully bonked
>3 more climbs

Ok dude

But for real though, are you grinding up those hills even in your low gears? Too low cadence strains your muscles much faster than your lungs.
Also, over 2 hours with no food is not very good if you’re doing any more than low intensity
>>
>>2021816
Sure I’ve bonked worse before where I’ve had to get off the bike, let alone get up some climbs.

Most of the climbs felt low intensity with the exception of one that pitched above 18% in places. I had an apple and banana during the 2 hours but I guess I need to follow the 20 minute rule with eating.

short ride today of just 20 miles. Tried to do more climbing and got 1000ft, but I need to hit more elevation since i have a 2500ft 50 miler coming up on sunday.... Luckily the group stops for a decently long rest mid ride so I should be fine.
Was doing 50 mile rides but flat and as a heavier rider the climbs can take it out of me.

There is a tough hill nearby that I should do in 2 days

Ran into a cool pair of riders today, a guy with a fredded to the max supersix on mavic comete (or cosmic not sure), riding with a guy in regular non cycling clothes on a hybrid. Both well into middle age. It was made evident to me that the regular clothes guy was just getting into bikes.

Regular clothes guy was surprisingly strong, especially for his age. He made it up a steep >10% climb on that thing and didn't even use the lowest gear (obviously wasn't easy but most guys on a bike like that would have just dismounted and pushed).

Remember that in real life casual riders and freds are natural friends, and the whole unracer movement is a bunch of judgmental busybodies who go out of their way to start fights over their own insecurities.

It's a subculture of people who are obsessed with how fast other people are going so they only ride absurdly expensive, absurdly slow bikes that should cost about $500 but oh no what if someone thinks I'm poor! so they're made of entirely chris king and paul components for no reason and the slowpoke barge costs about $5k so everyone knows how chill and laid back they are, and also everyone else is being extremely judgmental and un-chill for not riding that exact bike

Gonna be biking 130 miles to NYC soon on my $200 Amazon fixie on the 25th, going to meet an internet friend. I've never done a century, but I've done 70 miles, I'll probably sleep behind a tree since it'll take me like 20 hours. Excited to do it bros. It'll mostly be a flat ride so I'll just coast most of the way and chill. I love doing these long rides in chilly overcast weather and wrap myself up in my hoodie and get cozy while my bike takes me away.

I stopped a few times to take pictures of stuff with my drone. Twice I had people stop to see if I was ok. Apparently standing beside a bike fiddling with a controller is a sign of distress. I wanted to do some loops of the circle but they were still working on it.

That reminded me of a decorative circle at the university. I did over 10 loops around it a few years back and discovered it was an unlisted segment which I got the KOM for. After that the creator made it private or deleted it.

Yesterday when I flew the drone I lost connection with it 400 feet in the air. It was windy but I could hear it intermittently, but I couldn't see the damn tiny thing. It stayed up there over 10 minutes before auto descending when the battery was low. At least it managed to hover over the launch site.

I post pics on imgur to share with a local group interested in construction around town. Several drone galleries and a several years of ground shots. https://imgur.com/user/4picsharing/posts

There are some drone galleries a little bit down the list because I published some older hidden galleries after posting those. I was in the habit of just leaving galleries hidden as once published you can't add more images until you make them hidden again. After a while all the hidden galleries started to pile up.

The DJI Neo really struggles with the wind we get this time of year. I really could use longer flight time as well. But I can get it setup and be flying in under a minute.

$300 leaf dollars later I've got a set of studded mountain bike tires for the winter. Trying 45Nrth Gravdal for the first time. Too much bare pavement was really hard on my Ice Spikers and a Marathon Winter I had as a spare had a bad bead and blew off the back rim twice while riding.

Also got a new pair of gloves to use as my base for layer. I finally realized that women's gloves fit me better since my fingers are short.

I thought it was both, but I would probably just pull the wheel back in the dropouts a 1/8 of an inch or a couple mm.

I had the bright idea of sending my DJI Neo on a 3.25 km one way flight and then would ride over to the landing spot. The battery was critically low triggering an auto landing. I steered it to an easily visible point of reference, but it veered off course at the last second into some unharvested crop. After I rode over to where it was it took me 25 minutes to find it. The app caches the last 15 seconds of flight so it gave me a clue which direction it went.

Just ordered new glasses for the second time this year. I ordered progressive lenses on the recommendation of my optometrist but I absolutely hated them. They completely ruin your peripheral vision, you have to constantly move your head. One of the arms on my current frames has been held together with JB Weld for a few months and its just a matter of time until they break again.
>>
>>2024364
Get used to spinning in the 80rpm range, or just use an easier gear. Oh, and 1 week if you keep the same intensity.
>>2024386
I run large glasses since I have like a -8 prescription. Mine are auto-tinting(sick) and I don't crash much anymore so I don't have to replace them. I might get aviators if I cut some weight since that's what my dad, grandpa, and uncles wore bitd....
>>
>>2024383
I wouldn't call that biking. I might concede that it could be called cycling.
Also, Anons reply still applies.

I was all set to get a quick ride in this morning before it got windy, but when I dropped some stuff at the door it had rained. +2 and wet was something I was not interested in. There was snow the other day and the city put down salt, so the water would have been very salty.

I was doing some openstreetmap editing. One local guy just walks around and maps the smallest things. One changeset was for "Leaf Type" on several individual trees, to which I replied: "fallen" given the time of year. His reply confirmed his autism, a furry avatar and a lengthy discussion of leaf types completely missing that my comment was a joke.

Mountain-bikers belong in the skate park.

I was cruising along on my local designated mountain bike trail, and I realized something: I want "mountain-bikers" to trade in their full-sussers for BMXes and stay in the skate-park, and stop shitting up forest trails with "features".
>>
My usual back road was closed off today with cones. Only peds and particularly rule-flouting cyclists were allowed. Failsons with heavily modified cages couldn't go there and shit the place up as they often do on weekends.

It was pretty good, a party atmosphere prevailed because the density of people was like 1/10th what it would have been. I waved at a few other groups. The roadies waved back. The MTB guys waved back. The ebike people waved back. The hikers waved back. The grabblers waved back. The unracers just gave me a dead eyed stare, like I was an inanimate object that they were annoyed at being in their field of view.

Why are unracers like this?
>>
>>2025450
i've heard the exact same comment about roadies, and about mtbros, usually it's about roadies.

my answer will always be that sometimes cyclists are tired and don't have the energy /focus to be friendly while riding and not to take it personally. It's interesting that you distinguish between unracers and gravelfags, where exactly is the line drawn there?
>>
>>2023380

Nice ride today with the vintage bike riders.
Came a little tired from the ride yesterday and my seat was a little low on this bike so my quads are pretty cooked.
Saw an eagle, one guy had to get a new chain, and had a nice sandwich at the beach hut deli.
>>
>>2025466
Gravelfags ride normie shit like carbon or hydroformed aluminum, and have hydro disc brakes and modern-spec groupsets and bike computers and usually lycra albeit with more pockets and in more ironic color schemes. Unracers think carbon is an exclusive luxury show-off material unlike, say, all their chris king and paul crap bolted to the hand made and hand painted by rich white american hipsters steel frames, while wearing $400 japanese chambray "work shirts" and antique belgian merino wool jockey caps, all of which shows just how very down to earth and non-judgmental they are unlike all those status-obsessed assholes that comprise 99% of cyclists (oh did I mention unracers aren't 'cyclists' they're 'just some guy who happens to be on a bike')
>>
>>2025483
i've been noticing a lot of 'just ride', 'slow riders' who refuse to wear lycra and buy handmade bags and paul, CK, Nitto, etc, and winge about roadies and drink craft beer etc riding expensive modern gravel bikes, i'm not sure that your paradigm is reality any longer
>>
>>2025511
Other way around. Your idea of gravel as a "lifestyle choice" by tryhards dates from when gravel was the newest thing in town. Gravel is the default bike now. Nobody with a gravel bike thinks he's cool or different.
>>
>>2025512
>>2025511
Also tryhards are drinking natty wine now. Craft beer is dad tier. And people just say "beer" now, the "craft" was dropped a while ago since what used to be called "normal beer" is now only found on the hipster beer tasting menu as a historical/educational artifact.

I did a few heat loop tests for new heated gloves and neither worked as expected. So I took another look at some ebay glove heat pads I got at the end of last season. They were too stiff and not sized correctly to fit in a liner glove. One of my tests was to replicate the ebay heat pads, but the carbon sheet I ordered had a resistance about 1/8 of what was necessary. But the shape I cut out was super floppy, so I trimmed off excess white material from the interior of the ebay pad which made it much easier to work with.

Since the gloves I'm using have a liner between the shell I decided to cut open the bottom use a needle and thread to pull the pad to the end of each finger. The thumb is tricky because they just made a hand shape not taking into account how the thumb moves in relation to the fingers.
>>
File: bglove2.jpg (179 KB, 900x1200)

I ended up having to cut open a bit more of the liner than I was planning in order to reach in to keep the heat pad flap. Also some folding of the heat pad around the thumb.

The heat pad is 6 ohm, about the same as my DIY heated gloves. But the peak heat should be lower as about 1/3 the heating pad is on the palm, my DIY gloves had all the heat in the fingers.

Just need to do the second one and sew them back up. And turn them right side out.

Report back for sure. I've mostly solved my horrifically frigid finger problems with mittens, but toes still get horrible eventually no matter what I try
>>
>>2027131
I've been using electric toe warmers in my boots for 12 years now. My toes would always go numb and I could never ride for more than an hour. For me its a cold weather circulation issue, not a matter of insulation. They are a lot easier to do than gloves since you can just take a heating pad to the insoles.

I've been using DIY heated gloves for several years which has made winter riding much more enjoyable. But my DIY heating loops failed many times for mostly broken wires due to solder making them brittle or the stretching when removing the gloves.
>>
>>2027143
I'm gonna look into those. Have you tried mittens? Less surface area to cool off and space to fit more robust tech I would think. I haven't had any problems with controls although I do use friction shifters partially for this reason. Insulated deerskin ones are like $10 at hardware stores. Where do the batteries live on yours, and what's up time like?

I used mitts over my gloves before they do help but something about mitts just annoy me. I bought the largest ones I could find with removable liners so I could wear them over my normal gloves.

For both my gloves and boot heaters I put the batteries inside my jacket and run extension cables. I used some silicone adhesive to glue battery pockets into my jacket and cable guides down the arms and down the legs of my winter tights.

I used to have the batteries mounted on my boots but I switched to a different type of battery which wouldn't fit in the old holder or work with the old controller.

I'm using Aukey 10000mah USB-C batteries and some USB-C 9V boards from Aliexpress. Most heated stuff runs at 5V for USB or 7.4V for lipo batteries. The 9V board lets the heat pads run hotter than would at lower voltages. I added a PWM dimmer to control the output. A nice feature with the USB-C batteries is that pressing the button will switch between 5V and the alternative voltage the board I use can access giving me quick hi/low option. Pressing the button twice turns the battery off. The button is flush on the battery and almost impossible to press with gloves on, so I glued on the tip of a presta valve cap. This is how I made the controller and USB-C cable. https://www.instructables.com/Heated-Clothing-Controller-and-Power-Options-Versi/

I got the new gloves sealed up. They get very warm on the palm at 9V. Though they won't get as hot when I'm running both at the same time since the battery limits the output current. I'll use the dimmer to dial back the output to a good high setting. After flipping them right side out the heat pads don't quite reach the finger tips but that shouldn't be a problem.

I can usually get over 2 hours out of the batteries. I switch between high and low as needed for the boot heaters.

I put the extension cables for my boot heaters in my tights, then it ended up being +4C so I didn't need my heated gloves or boot warmers.

These thermal tights used to be nice and warm, but over the years they've thinner out to being good enough for around freezing. Down toward -10C I need thin long underwear. Colder than that my heavier windproof ones.

Had my heated gloves on for the first time today. One was much cooler than the other barely making heat. Both initially had the same resistance measurement, but the bad one now fluctuates wildly between 12 and 50 ohm when I move my hand. The pad is supposed to be around 7 ohm, so at 12 it will never be warm. Not sure if it was a manufacturing defect or if that design is doomed to a quick death. Maybe I'll keep using the working one and see how long it takes to break.

you're probably going to have to try some different saddles but these pics give you the right idea.
with the saddle adjusted properly, the saddle is better thought of as a perch, a lot of your weight goes into the pedals, somewhat "holding you up" keeping some of your weight off the saddle. also, stand on the pedals and raise your butt up a little when going over bumps and let your knees absorb the shock.
as a noob, the soft tissue between the sit bones and saddle will be tender for a while, just have to ride a while and it goes away.

Only decent winter riding weather in weeks and my fat bike had a flat tire. Surly tires quickly start flaking rubber on the inside of the tire exposing the casing. Then when the bike sits idle during the summer the tube bonds to the casing fibers. Then first ride as the tire flexes the tube can pull away from the tire ripping out little chunks of rubber making very tiny leaks. This happened last year and the year before, I was going to let air out of my tires last spring when I put the bike away but forgot.

Fixing flats on my Moonlander is a pain because there is not enough clearance when using a rack to remove the rear wheel without removing the brake caliper.

Last year when I was fixing the flat I smeared EP6000 flexible adhesive all around the tire where casing was exposed. It seems to have worked as there was barely any flaked rubber this time and no peeling of the adhesive. Just a few spots that needed a touchup after cleaning the inside of the tire and turning it inside out.

I used a hand pump chemical sprayer with soap and water to clean the tire and tube in the bathtub. The water was soapy enough to find the very small leak. I patched that and a bunch of other spots with rubber missing. Probably 20 patches on that tube now between what I added last year and this year.

This time I wiped powdered graphite around the inside of the tire to see if that will keep the tube from sticking.

i'm mostly cycling for fitness and I wanted to hit 250W.
failed a TR workout indoors so I dialed down and started deloading. went to do some easy workouts.

decided to tone down to 150W for indoor to recover for a bit then did that for 2-3 weeksish. re-tested and i've decreased to 160w..... i used to be able to hold that for an hour easily but now my legs feel so fucking heavy. what the fuck happened? all my 1min-2min segments are a good 10-30 seconds slower on my best efforts. how the fuck did my fitness decrease so much after one deload?
>>
>>2028043
nigga i ride bikes irl for fun
>>
>>2028043
You didn't need the deload so you didn't get the overcompensation, and thus straight up detrained.
Good news is if you push yourself again it will come back fast.
Oh, and if you got sick or something mentally/physically stressful happened recently that can impact your performance too. Or if you are just eating like shit(not enough, only shit food, etc).
>>
>>2028053
ughh i don't think i can even do what I did before. I usually did most of my training outdoors and it's a little difficult in the winter months. just mad confused how resting dropped my fitness so fucking hard.
>>
>>2028056
It's not just resting that did it.
As I said before it could be mental, or other reasons.
If you don't like training/can't in the winter it would be better to do indoor training, or crosstrain, and then come fresh and excited to train in the spring.

very nice weather in the morning, so I went for longer ride. got heavy rain'd my ass in the last 3 hours.
it was alright.
>>
>>2027955
Went on another ride a couple days ago for about 25 miles. Noob gains are great. My butt barely felt it, probably could have done another 25 no problem. ebike though, so it doesn't mean much, but I did have off and on eco most of the time. I just use turbo for intersections and small sections with no bike lane.
Destroyed the bike though. I guess I'm not supposed to just shift from tenth to first immediately because I forgot before I stopped. About 10 minutes of fiddling on the side of the road with my phone flashlight and I finally figured out a link broke, so I had to walk 5 miles back home. The last 2 or 3 miles felt like purgatory on a long ass road with no intersections.
Got a new chain yesterday, turned out it was too short so I had to take about 8 good links from the old one and frankenstein it. Still doesn't work. I think the chainring is fucked. I'm just gonna let the bike shop fix it this time and rape me so I can get back to riding faster.

With the heating pad not working out for my heated glove I'm onto plan C. A single 102 cm length of carbon rope with 4 evenly spaced copper crimps which will allow for 3 parallel heat zones. I knew you could make 2 zones out of a single piece of rope by having on polarity on each end and the opposite of the middle, but I wasn't sure if you could do 3. I tinkered with a circuit simulator to confirm I needed to wire the 4 crimps + - + -. I sewed in the carbon rope to get it exactly where I wanted it, but it did take a long time.

I opened the ebay heat pad and the conductive material is very fragile. Grey looking stuff that is almost like a dried paste, possibly graphite with a binder.

Oops, I screwed up my zone calculation forgetting how parallel resistors work (and I had built a calculator in Excel several years ago specifically for that). 3 loops means dividing the resistance by 3. So instead of being around 7 ohm, the glove is 2.5. And 33 watts vs 11 (though my battery could never output that much). What I actually need is a longer 134 cm rope in 2 zones. I should be able to salvage the first glove with a little rewiring and toss an extra 30 cm of carbon on the back of the hand.

>It's a great replacement/complement to riding
It's the other way around. Riding is a great replacement for skiing when there's no snow. :D Johannes HK rides in the off-season, for one.
I think cycling can really be beneficial for skiing. I spent a fair amount of time leaning trials basics last summer and now I feel like I'm able to glide on one ski in V2 alternate far longer than ever before.

Waiting for the light snow to stop before I go for a ride. Riding while it is snowing is annoying since it melts on your face making it considerably colder than it would be at a given temperature.

I got 20 miles today, it was the 2nd ride I have tried since breaking my ribs and trashing my shoulder.
It actually felt fast and since it was a different starting point and different paths since construction has shut a lot of my normal rides down I figured I'd have a few PR's to look at on strava...
But noooo strava fucked up 13 seconds into my ride and never recovered until I went to finish the ride.
Oh well it was still good but cold.
I need to get some proper winter cycling pants instead of the lycra leggings that suck

its nice to hear you're riding anon but don't be one of those fags who hurts themselves because they didn't recover properly. just ride what feels good, don't push it until you know you're 100%
>>

Thanks for the concern anon. I broke my ribs mountain biking but I was doing road bike riding yesterday which to me is taking it easy.
Swinging the bike back and forth like in a sprint or climbing is painful and of course breathing is a bit tough still because when I broke the ribs I cut my lung but not a full puncture.
Also since I work construction I was back working after 3 weeks... and that sucked to high hell, I was given a couple of girl apprentices to help me because I was in so much pain, and also likely to mock me a bit.
I also started working out again this week, so I would say I am probably close to 80% back to normal.

I rode in real snow yesterday with 2.4 slicks and went down twice because of slushy snow, soft landings thankfully but I was surprised at how little snow made 2.4" slicks feel sketchy. Never felt that on 28mm road tires on my road bike cutting through slush so after going home last night, I swapped to 2.4" MTB tires and will be doing some more traction testing

I tried the 2.4" MTB tires in snow now, it was fun and not as sketchy as slicks (no shit) but they use so much more energy to hold speed on clean road. I'm going to need to find a tire that has a good balance

Flying in the wind I realized the Neo is not the drone for me as the gimbal only goes up and down and can't compensate for drone tilt (which is how drones maintain position in the wind). My photos the other day were tilted 45 degrees. So I sold it and ordered a DJI Mini 3 instead. The new drone is much faster and has the same flight time on 1 battery as the Neo does with 3 and is about the same price. The flight time will let me do much longer time lapses, explorer more, and fly over to other places instead of packing up and moving. I took a bit of a hit selling the old one its better than sitting on a shelf.

leave your dirty bicycle out side where it will be stolen and destroyed by the elements
>>
>>2030634
Wait your longest ride ever are 15km?
I dont want to shit on you but i think your seat is way to low or the bike is way to big for you and that might cost you a lot of efficency. Doenst look like a dropper seatpost to me.
Get some cheap shimano m520 spd pedals and some shoes for it, you will love it after 15mins. Also they are pretty damn good for the pricepoint.
>>
>>2030725
its my first bike, learned on it, I got it a few weeks ago, but havent ridden it a lot (maybe like 80km) as I fucking got sick twice in a month. got it as alternative excercise to running, cus I can bike 1hr+ with 155 heart rate easily, but running that no way, my legs give up way before since I got fat as shit
I am not getting lock on pedals, seems like the fastest way to eat shit if I fall, and yeah I am slowly raising seat till I feel good.
>>
>>2030727
Pretty good that you started biking but i strongly suggest that you put your seat at the correct height from the getgo.
Just use your inseam and multiply that by 0,885 to get it started. You can fine adjust from there.
Clipless pedals arent that bad, the best thing about them is that your foot is always in the same, the ideal, position.
And you wont eat shit, well you wont tackle hard terrain eitherway with your tires.

I already almost ate shit a couple of times mdude, even with my lower seat. I am thinking of just buying some waterproof hiking boots

I multiply inseam and then thats from ground to seat? or from hub to seat?
>>
>>2029409
>and also likely to mock me a bit
if i were in a position to do that to my friend as a joke, i so would
>>
>>2030742
Not him, but I think the rule is center of bb/crank bolt to top of seat. Keep riding, and try the seat up 1-2cm every week or so towards the .885 and you will notice when it's too high.
Symptoms of too low seat are knee pain at high power, not much hamstring engagement, and possibly hip pain. Too high is ass rocking side to side, knee pain(too much extension), and harder to keep cadence up since you have to extend so much.

Anyways keep riding. That's all that really matters.
>>
(inseam-12cm) is a better starting point to find your ideal height than the multiplication imo
>>
>>2030716

first time doing 30km without resting and embarrassed myself in front of a rooner and a delivery driver who drove to the street across to deliver a package when he was already parked, not that its his fault but I didn't eat during the ride so I was not in the best head space to assess danger, tried to unclip both legs while braking too hard and flopped
