I'm really surprised at how slowly the steam engine manufacturers were to see the advantages diesels held, and when they did I'm surprised at how poorly their products were designed compared to upstarts like EMD. One of the steam engine makers had GE on board with them, but they pissed away their chance to lock them in and GE went their own way, look at them now (although even they had their missteps).

That would be ALCo. The problem is that the jews at GE saw the potential and wanted to cut out the legacy locomotive manufaturers completely, hence why GE split from ALCo early on.
