Remember when people thought this was cool? Lol. The best part was they were all slow as balls IRL
>>
I still think old death trap wheels are cool. the fixie thing is old enough now that it's kind of retro/nostalgic at this point instead of being "cringe"

The wheels are neat and I actually like the deep section aluminum rims.
What bothers me in that pic is that stem.
Like just get a normal riser or leave the steerer taller, or maybe don't run track drops....

Recently picked up a rare frame that was treated like this. A fun project to fix up with parts I have on hand.

I bet whoever rides this looks goofy as fuck.
I usually love fixed gear bikes but that bike is like a leftist's haircut — sure, it's different and unique, but it also looks like complete shit.
>>
>>2025558
Wtf, is that something like bondo?
>>
It still is cool for $300
>>

nah. Bottom section on the seat tube is a repair since someone busted the seat tube(I presume) at the front derailleur mount. So later I sanded it down and found it was a split repair they bronze brazed together.

The head tube junction was always like that and aero since it's a zunow z-1 proform frame.
However the crash was bad enough the front brake swung around and dented it so that too was repaired via brazing, and both sections were sprayed over to stop rusting.

Mostly posted it since it too was a victim of single speed/fixieing which I guessed due to the weird bars+grips, and single chainring.

is that a paint job or a wrap?
>>
>>2025552
I've never seen one IRL but I assume it's mainly gook type people who have a trispoke

Are you going NJS or just evil?

Paint job.

I pulled the stem and bars and they are hanging up.

>NJS
What does that mean?
>>
>>2028121
>What does that mean?
It's a mountain biking term from Japan. Nishaki Japan Sokotoma: Japanese MTB racing League
>>
>>2028132
lmfao.

>>2028121
it's Nihon Jitensha Shinkokai, Keirin racing's governing organization

not him but riding track bikes on the road is huge in south korea, seen plenty of stuff on youtube
>>
>>2028136
It's a huge thing in Southeast Asia too, the barrier for entry is much lower than /o/tism but the subculture carries similar vibes
>>
I fell in with the fixie crew in college at the height of this scene.
>skinny jeans, tepid PBR, burger records type music, MASH videos
We were fully in and now I am super judgmental when I see anyone over the age of 20 riding this shit these days.

2nd wave fixie culture is really different from 3rd wave tho
>>
>>2028150
in what way?
>>
>>2028150
what years demarcate the eras?
I didn't even know there was a third wave, I only remember the 2nd wave which ended sometime in the mid 2010's
>>

the current wave of fixed gear culture is coming back in the form of "tracklocross" bikes. Essentially fixed gears that take fat tires. I'm loving it b/c it's a god send for building a comfy, dead reliable commuter. Have a State 4130 frame that I run 700x35 tires with full fenders and a Dynamo wheel with.

2nd wave fixie culture was heavily tied to late 00s hipster culture and because of that, it was inherently a grassroots oriented culture. 3rd wave fixie culture by contrast weighs far more into social media, influencer salesmen, clout, and especially a lot more into consoom. The bikes of 2nd wave were more salvaged old ten speeds converted to fixed gear and at the tail end of their era, progressed to track bikes for the street ("tarck" bike). 3rd wave picked up from track bikes for the street but sought to fit the widest tires possible which lead to the wide tire fixed gear frames we have today.
>>2028286
exact years differ city to city and country but generally 2nd wave was late 00s to early 10s and 3rd wave is late 10s to the past year or two ago, 3rd wave just about finished. Additionally, OG fixed gear era is Henry Desgrange era, and 1st wave is Sheldon Brown era. I believe those are the years

No one ever thought bikes or the fags that ride them are cool.
Bikes are for kids.
Grow up, manchildren.

ah ok heard, we were solid 2nd wave for sure, I live in the southern US tho so these things hit us a bit later, would have been like early to mid 2010s at its peak. I was riding my dad's old peugeot, then converted it to single speed fixed like you described then when the dropout broke or some shit I got a built for purpose masi fixie, it was chromoly steel whereas a lot of the no-name brands were selling hi-ten builds for cheaper to capitalize on the trend, so people were riding those for a minute. The holy grail was that surly frame that fit 35s but it was expensive for us back then. We were all envious of the one dude on campus that had one.

This 3rd wave definitely feels like a covid thing, again, we get things late here.

>This 3rd wave definitely feels like a covid thing
The stage was set by old timers from the 2nd wave who never stopped riding track bikes and kept up with social media. When covid and lockdowns hit, cycling in general boomed. This was less prevalent in cities with lax enforcement of lockdowns but cities with strong enforcement left a lot of us with not many options for socializing and riding fixies wid da squad on the empty streets of covidpocalypse felt like being in a movie. If it wasn't for covid, there might've not been a 3rd wave. The problem however is how fast cycling in general grew during covid, that meant a lot of money from corpos sponsoring influencers to advertise and sell bike stuff, a lot of that money dried up very fast as society shifted back to precovid behavior, so the peak is past but the proliferation of the bikes from the 3rd will trickle down eventually and start a 4th wave when the economy hits hard or weird times. Don't forget, the catalyst for the 2nd wave was the great recession which forced many of us to find affordable means of transportation. History will repeat
>>
Most second wave riders where I live went the way of the gravel bike and are enjoying life.
The ones who stayed on tarck bikes now make it their whole personality and seem mad all the time.

Rip FGG

>>2028387
this is very accurate to where I am from, the hipster fixie to gravel head pipeline is real
