(WJRT) - A 53-year-old man was arrested and charged this week with the murder of a man on Flint's south side 26 years ago in 1998.The Flint Police Department says cold case investigators obtained enough evidence to charge 53-year-old Eric Dukes with the murder of 31-year-old Shannon Holihan. The case is one of the first solved by the Flint Police Department's new cold case investigation unit. Flint Police Chief Terrence Green said the investigation was funded by ARPA funding and a Mott Foundation Grant to help bring cold cases to a close."These funds are specially used for cold case investigations. Also, to assist, the investigator with any additional sources that he would need or require," said Chief Green.Authorities found Holihan's body behind a business in the 2300 block of South Dort Highway on May 27, 1998. He died of blunt force trauma and his 1994 Chevrolet Corvette was missing.Investigators say leads ran dry and they were not able to obtain enough evidence to make an arrest in the case for more than 25 years. They never found Holihan's stolen white Corvette."This case went through several detectives throughout the years. Investigators from our staff, who also works cold cases for the city of Flint, learned this year that the MSP crime lab had a hit on DNA," explained Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton. "Dukes may have been off living his life for all these years, but I think justice has finally caught up with him."Flint police say a tip to Crime Stoppers in another investigation led to evidence tying Dukes to the 1998 murder of Holihan. Dukes was arraigned this week on charges of felony murder and carjacking.
Leyton said it's alleged Dukes and the victim met at Club Triangle a former LGBTQ bar that night, before the murder."We believe this is a hate crime. The ethnic intimidation did not exist at the time of the crime," said Prosecutor Leyton."This case proves that a tip that may seem insignificant can lead to justice and closure for those grieving families, even decades after their loss," the Flint Police Department posted on Facebook.Dukes faces up to life in prison with no chance of parole if he is convicted.Anyone with information that may help investigators with another cold case in Genesee County should call the Flint Cold Case Unit at 810-237-6935 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-422-JAIL.
