Lets have an actual troubleshooting and diagnostic general because nobody reads QTDDTOT

I'll start

>van sitting for months because frayed battery cables
>replace cables and battery
>ignition comes on
>starter won't click

>check starter fuse
>good
>swap starter relay for wiper relay
>starter still won't click
>I put a new starter in less than a year ago

What am I missing here?
>>
>>27576101
Do you get 12V to the starter positive wire when you turn the key to start it?
>>
>>27576138
Multimeter reads 17.3
>>
Ok I have a mind-bogging one.

In my 2001 My Audi A3 Quattro 1.9 TDi (8L) turbo sometimes randomy stops working. Usually happens when after braking from high speed. Then once I re-accelerate it no longer works. I have to stop, turn key off and on and it works again. This is very random, happpens rarely but it's dangerous when overtaking. Unformtunately even after car mechanic replaced vaccum pump (after that brakes are much better) issue is still there but since it's so random none mechanics can find reason of this.
>>
>>27576147
Is the wastegate solenoid sticking open?
>>
>>27576149
Hard to tell, engine in mounted sideway with almost no access to see turbo.
>>
nobody reads qttddtot when its a troll thread and morons ask easily googleable questions all day

>>27576145
starter has a relay on it, lightly tap it with something, common for brushes to corrode in humidity too.
>>
>>27576138
I don't have a second pair of hands to help me check
>>
>>27576168
If your multimeter has a MIN / MAX function it displays the last maximum reading so you can handle it by yourself.

Put new pads, rotors, and calipers on the rear. Test drove to bed the brakes, and it grinded the whole mile. Re-grease and try again?
>>
>>27576517
>Put new pads, rotors, and calipers on the rear. Test drove to bed the brakes, and it grinded the whole mile. Re-grease and try again?
You may have bent the backing plate/dust shield just enough to contact the rotor, or the pad shims in the caliper bracket could be off just enough to touch the rotor. That's assuming all the parts are correct and not made poorly. Just gotta pull the wheel back off and see if you can find the spot that's grinding when you spin the rotor by hand.
>>
>>27576517
What did you grease?
Had the same issue with my Miata because I had a seized parking brake adjuster screw in the back of the caliper
>>
>>27576147
im pretty sure those turbos are variable vain and are vacuum actuated by a PWM solenoid, i would check for vacuum leaks and see if there's any check valves inline that aren't checking.
>>
>>27576101
see if you're getting 12 volts to the command wire for the relay inside the starter. Not the thick positive wire but the thin wire that commands the starter. whats the year make model? i can pull up wiring diagrams if you need.
>>
>>27576534
thanks for the tips
>>27576538
the retainer clips and the sides/back of the pads. neglected to hit the caliper slide pins because it didn't come with enough grease packets and i figured they might've been greased from factory. i'll check the parking brake again.
>>
>>27576764
are the new calipers for a different sized rotor? i bought a set of calipers not realising the bolts were also a different length and after driving round the block I found out it ground down the tips of those bolts against the rotor. got the factory hardware and it was ok again
>>
>>27576517

My car sometimes shakes real hard and idles rough but the only error code I've got is incorrect purge flow. EVAP is brand new, should I change the fuel pump filter?

It's also way worse in park.

Sounds like your car just idling too low for some reason
>>
>>27578407

>>
>>27578407
I made my honda fit purr like a kitten. I swear a lot of time at idle it is hard to tell it is on. The biggest factors (no not the fuel filter, but I changed that also).
>spark plugs (iridium) and ignition coils
>serpentine belt
>seafoam (through the vacuum brake line when running)
That last one really makes a difference and blows some nasty white smoke. Takes like 20 minutes to do it slow enough so the engine doesn't stall.

I also did a bunch of other stuff but that was the most important for a nice quiet engine. Don't neglect your evap passages also.
>>
>>27578407
When you say Evap is new do you mean the Evap purge valve? Because it can leak out the leak detection pump depending on the model

Tap the sides where the screw is with a ballpeen/punch to loosen it a bit. Tap the top of the broken head a few times too, also get a socket that will fit around it and hammer it so that it loosens the circumference. C-Clamp the shit out of it until you flatten the threads enough to finish it with a wrench, or with the c-clamp. It might also break the top rust and you can get more penetrant oil in there.

I put a new radiator in a 95 f150 with the 4.9L inline 6 because it overheated right after I bought it and when I did a flush there was a leak. Now its smoking after idling only a few minutes and its sputtering and swirling like crazy at the radiator neck. The upper radiator hose wasn't warming up as the engine overheated so I replaced the thermostat but it didn't fix the issue. Temperature gauge also seems to be broken on the dash.

older fords had an additional remote starter solenoid "relay" which eventually fails
idk when they switched to the "normal" setup - probably in the mid-2000s so yours wouldn't have it in that case - idk i'm not familiar with the E vans

Changed my signal lights to some Amazon LEDs since the side ones weren't working. Side ones work fine but then when changing the front signal lights the right signal light has stopped working.

When I turn off the headlights though the right signal light works by itself while the others are off.

When the headlights are on the right side signal light turns on very faintly and the front signal is on and won't flash for signal.

I switched the sockets and the lights to some non LEDs. Same issues. Checked fuse box and the fuse doesn't seem damaged. Please help!

Got a head scratcher, 2001 dodge datoka with the 2.5l 4 cylinder (same engine that in jeeps). First problem is the crankshaft position sensor sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve narrowed it down to one wire, I jiggle this wire(engine harness side) and the truck will want to start and I can hear relays clicking otherwise not even the fuel pump will turn on and the no bus light on dashboard turns on. Is it just a bad connector that isn’t making good contact? Just replace it?

Second problem the truck is over fueling at start up so much so that it doesn’t even want to turn over. If I take out the fuel pump relay the engine turns over fine. Checked compression it is good. Not sure what the issue is.
>>
>>27589684
Alright I just disconnected an injector and it does the same clicking relays on and off bullshit is the ecu fried or maybe not enough current to the fuse box?

>My car sometimes shakes real hard and idles rough but the only error code I've got is incorrect purge flow.
If your purge valve isn't functioning right it'll let air in and throw the fuel/air mix off. Go fix it instead of tipping your fedora and mumbling about how fixing emissions is for plebs.

Is it okay to just use exhaust clamps instead of welding the pipes together?
>>
>>27576101
in my old 96 v6 camry (3vz-fe) i had a very odd phenomenon where i'd cold start the engine and, very rarely, it'd do something that i can only describe as the car version of edging; the engine sounded like it was on the cusp of full ignition, then it'd start and run normally, i'd be holding the key in the start position while all this was happening.
once warm it never seemed to do it, only on cold starts and even then it was very rare. it didn't seem to matter how long or short the car sat idle for, only that it was a cold start. anyone else ever had this?
>>
>>27590169
Do this:
>clean up and apply exhaust sealant where clamp will go
>Clamp
or the fun way:
>clean and apply clamp
>tape a vacuum cleaner hose to the end of your tailpipe and seal it off so it can create suction.
>apply muffler cement via vacuum SUCC

The cement must be chonky though for second option to work.

people ask questions that are some combo of
>incredibly vague, nowhere near enough details, no pictures, no scantool/codes/data
>incredibly model-specific shit you need to go to a specialist enthusiast forum for cause no one here has even heard of that car
>highly subjective such as "which car should i buy" or "which brand is best"
>just completely incomprehensible drivel that probably didn't even make sense to the author
>includes irrelevant highly confusing information
that's what ruins SQTDDTOT threads
and when they're told to come back with more info (make model year trim engine, codes) they never do

conversely if you write a long thorough informative detailed intelligent question it will get dismissed with something along the lines of
>you need to study the live data
rather than stating which monitors to watch and what values/ranges are acceptable - the questioner wouldn't have asked the question if they knew that

connect a known good speaker to the door wires temporarily, does that fix it? if so it's the speaker, if not go back and connect directly to the amp, if it works there, it's the wiring from the amp to do the door, if it cuts out there it's either the amp or the wiring between the head unit and the amp

The engine is trying to spin the transmission input shaft but the wheels are trying to keep the input shaft still. If you give it enough gas the engine will provide enough torque to get the transmission to overpower the force of friction from the wheels, and the car goes. If yiu don't, then the engine keeps trying to spin the transmission that is held tightly in place by the wheels; instead of the engine moving the transmission, the transmission slows the engine down until the engine can't move anymore, and thus it stalls. It's like if you tried to twist a cap off a jar, you put enogh torque the cap moves and spins off, if you don't put enough torque your hand stops moving.

Thanks, I'm trying to take it slow I'm just pissed off at the whole situation.
I bought new speakers & connected them but the issue remains. I also tested the impedance on the original speakers with a multimeter and they're fine. I guess this narrows it down to the issue being the wiring?

I checked fuses and found pic related. I should mention the car has issues with the rear defroster not working, and the gauge cluster resetting once the car turns off. What's up with these wires? Could removing them fix these issues to include my speakers?
>>
>>27591591
>I guess this narrows it down to the issue being the wiring?
my money is on the amp losing power/ground momentarily, one of the speaker wires shorting either to ground (anything metal) or to the other wire which causes momentarily overload, or simply the amp failing.
>>
>>27591591
oh and those wires are somebody tapping into the fuse box to take power to new devices they added. you can remove them, but whatever those go to will lose power.

Removed the fuses and wires, all 4 except the blue one were blown. Replaced the fuses, and reconnected the battery. To keep it short I noticed the gauge cluster and headunit working better after this, but the speaker issue still persists.

Went back to the passenger footwell and noticed pic related, there's some wires that were tied with other ones with different colors.

Unrelated but I also found a yellow/black wire sticking out of the bundle of wiring that runs along the floor of the car, & then connects to a bolt on the body in the passenger footwell. I'm assuming this is factory grounding point?

found this in haynes manual:
>Test the operation of the brake servo unit as follows: With the engine off, depress the footbrake 4 or 5 times to exhaust the vacuum.
>Hold the brake pedal depressed, then start the engine.
>As the engine starts, there should be a noticeable "give" in the brake pedal as vacuum builds up.
>Allow the engine to run for at least 2 minutes, and then switch it off.
>If the brake pedal is depressed now, it should be possible to detect a hiss from the servo as the pedal is depressed.
>After about four or five applications, no further hissing should be heard, and the pedal should feel much harder.
dumb esl me not sure if I need to hold the brake for 2 minutes after the engine starts or release it after it "gives" to perform this check

So on had a retard moment a minute ago. I was in a parking spot and didn't notice the curb angled in front of my car. As I pulled out I went right over it. Not fast, but once I was over I had to commit to it. I had clearance since I didn't hear any scraping but it was high enough to put me up and down pretty hard. Right side only. When I came down there was a large slam. That slam freaked me out. You know when metal clangs so much it sounds like glass breaking? I'm hoping a lot of that was the wheelchair in my trunk. I checked underneath and everything was fine, nothing missing or hanging. Opened the hood and everything looked ok. What kind of potential damage could I be looking at? Should I be that worried?

Any thoughts on why a 08 Ford F250 Super Duty's batteries would drain overnight out of the blue? I had a similar issue last August but it turned out to just be corrosion on the terminals.

>Both are so low the charger won't even light up when I attach the clamps (it works fine on any other battery I own, leaving it plugged in overnight on a trickle didn't do anything)
>Jumping it with my other car barely gets the accessory lights on
>Put in brand new batteries and it drove for a bit then drained overnight again.
>Nothing left on in the cab at any time
>Terminals and wires had a little corrosion but they just brushed off, grounding cable is fine

I'm not savvy on electrical work specifically so this is new to me. I'm heading out to test all the fuses right now so hopefully it's just a random one that needs replacing, but the fact that it's not charging while driving has me more worried than last time.

Pic unrelated but was delicious

Hopefully this is a quick one. Need to charge my battery. Red + cable will go to the part circled red and the black - cable can go to the part circled blue correct? Got me kinda confused with needing to attach the - cable to a plain metal part on the engine.

That's not vacuum or booster related, that's a hydraulic problem. If fluid level is good and you don't see leaks it's probably a failure inside the master cylinder.

>>27594171
The reservoir level is still good. A fluid leak doesn't seem like it'd be intermittent which is why I didn't consider it too much

I got a check engine light recently, checked it and it said I'm running too rich. Long term fuel trim at about -25%.
Checked my spark plugs (these are only a few months old), cylinders 1 and 2 are pretty dirty, 1 less so. I figured if only one spark plug was black, it'd probably be a coil pack, but now I'm not so sure what it could be.
I cleaned the MAF sensor and as I said the plugs are pretty much new. Upstream O2 sensor is jumping between ~0.1 and ~0.9 so it should also be working correctly.

One more thing I noticed as I was looking at this picture, are the crush washers even properly crushed? I followed the instructions on the box, but I'm retarded and haven't tightened spark plugs before

>Crimp/solder/splice, pick your poison. As long as the connections are good and protected from each other and ground, youll be fine.
Soldering doesn't make a good wiring connection in a car long-term because it makes it brittle, and that doesn't go along well with vibration. Aggressive environment is another concern, combined even with semi-active fluxes it can eat through the wires pretty fast, this is also a thing you should protect the wire from.
Splicing and crimping are okay as long as you know what are you doing.

Red to + post on battery, black to - post or any bare metal part on the frame. Going straight to the post with the black isn’t that dangerous, especially with any of the modern smart chargers. They recommend black to frame because you don’t want to cause sparks if you’re dumb and trying to charge an obviously leaky battery that’s giving off hydrogen gas.

>>27594054
Get down on a multimeter and find one of the numerous guides on how to find parasitic drain. You’re going to go through each fuse and try to find which circuit is pulling a bunch of extra current, then try to track down whatever wire/device on that circuit is causing the issue.

I was doing the math on a used truck vs a new one. The used is 26k and the new one 35k. By the math in four years cost of ownership the new car and used are the same price, but the used has 90k miles on it. That's doing all my own work and performing 100k mile service on the used truck (costs about 3k). So even if you know how to wrench the used truck prices still aren't cheap enough to be worth it.

>decide to make the drive and check out the car
>leather is in great shape for the most part, drives nicely, looks great, etc etc seems like a pretty good car all things considered, only 2 cosmetic issues on the outside
>sunroof doesn't open (possibly a fuse thing but I barely use my current car's sunroof anyways)
>but when I crank it up to test drive it the first time, hear a clicking, rattling noise for a brief moment, but it doesn't do it the next 3 times I crank it
>google symptoms, seems to be a timing belt thing
>if timing belt fucks up I may as well get a new car at that point
>car is already slightly out of my price range but it ticks every other box I was looking for and the outer cosmetic stuff can be fixed relatively easily/cheap
worth it or nah? Google says timing belt repair can be anywhere between $350 to $1100. I'd hate to miss out on it but I'd also hate to have to shell out an extra thousand bucks for a fix as soon as I get the car. No experience fixing cars myself so paying someone else is my only realistic option if I go through with it.

I don’t know what it costs now, but I had Maaco do a car for $800 with their one coat special like 15 years ago. This. Had a real tricky no start that turned out to be an ECU, just ran a wire straight battery positive to the solenoid to isolate the starter out of the equation.

If it cranks you need to look control side. Pull your relay, check it is getting power in and a control signal when cranking. Depending on the circuit, it is possible the negative side of your relay control will have voltage, so don't get freaked out if it does.

I have a really funny noise when turning, worse on a right turn but sometimes vaguely noticeable on a left turn.
It is only at a specific rotation and speed. It sounds like a CV shaft slapping, a little tap tap tap noise.

noise does not happen on bumpy roads so probably not suspension anyway, but im at my wits ends.

My best guesses are driveshafts or bearings, but they both seem functionally good and you'd expect more symptoms if either was bad. Its like once the load shifts in a certain way there's this clearance somewhere in the drivetrain. Slipping gears in the diff? Any help is appreciated.

Any play in the wheel when it’s off the ground? Try lifting the wheels of the ground and spinning the wheel by hand, see if you get bearing noise. I guess you can also try turning the steering wheel when the wheels are off the ground. Come back when you can replicate the noise
>>
>>27605627
Oh, just noticed it’s fwd, try putting it in gear with front wheels in the air, turn steering wheel to see if the noise is there.
>>
>>27605627
>>27605634
I have no other obvious indication of bearing noise. Thats why im hesitant to say it's bearing[s]. Im just kind of at my wits end.

The only play that noticeable in anything is an up and down motion in the CVs on the diff side. The splines in the box look fine though. I used chassis noise clamps and the noise sounds more obvious on the frame and the LH hub than the trans itself. I've tried running it and turning the steering off the ground but it seems load dependent.

Idk if it's an issue with the axle itself inside the bearing. Im walking in circles at this point. Pulling things to pieces and thinking of just throwing parts at it.

Do you think it would be possible to drivetrain swap a Miata to AWD, like if I was really desperate to fit it in there I could make it work?
>>
>>27605711
Anything is plausible with enough money. Unfortunately what you are talking about would take insane amounts of fabrication, custom mounts, custom suspension. The chassis would probably need modifications.
The problem is you need a box that will suit the application but also be able to fit. Then you have to redesign the frame/suspension/chassis to get the new drivetrain to be able to safely transfer power to the wheels.
That's assuming you can even mate your box to the old engine, or will you need an engine that better suits the application. Good luck. Even thinking about the amount of work makes my head hurt.
>>
>>27605715
That's pretty much what I figured. Miata is already such a small car I can't imagine fitting AWD in the stock engine bay.
>>
>>27589385
What car and year is it?
I'd suspect that the issue was present before you brought the LED lights into things, but keeping everything as OEM as possible helps with diagnosing it.

I'd start with basics. Make sure they are all getting voltage, check the grounds on them all, make sure you're battery and alternator are good. If it's a newer car, I'd be inclined to say your Junction box or your BCM are to blame if all the basics are good.
If you're getting good power and ground, you may want to check for voltage drop from the source voltage to the bulb. Check your bulb holders and terminals for corrosion also.

Get whatever Husky-Craftsman-Kobalt-Gearwrench ~250pc socket set with 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2” drive sockets when they’re on sale for $149. Then get a full wrench set, at minimum get metric but might be worth getting SAE if there’s a good deal on some 30pc set because you always run into that stuff around the house. Then a 4pc assorted pliers set from any brand, and probably a hammer for whackin stuff.

3T low profile floor jack, ~$150 from the usual suspects, it’s all the same Chinese stuff from the same factories at that price so Husky-Craftsman-Pittsburgh-Daytona- or Blackjack at Walmart. Then get a pair or two of 3T jack stands.

There’s a million other things to make life easier. You might run into retarded fasteners that require a long ball head 8mm hex socket, and if you work on VW stuff, triple square sockets, so the list becomes quite long. Suspension work, there’s ball joint separators and spring compressors, but you can rent those from the auto parts stores for free when the time comes. And then specialty pliers and bullshit when you get deeper into it, but a lot of it can be done with more basic tools, it just takes a little longer.

I'm trying to find an engine diagram for my specific car but no luck. I want to learn the inner workings and have deeper understanding of what all of these hoses and wires are connected to. How do I gain the knowledge to be able to point out which hose goes where on any car?
>>
>>27605891
Great baseline.
I'd add that i find long straight 12 point spanners to be the bees knees. The kind that have two sizes on each end. They are not always the right tool for the job, but they bring a lot of functionality to a set of spanners. They tend to have a lot of leverage and are great for a lot of applications.
>>27605896
As far as hoses go, often it's vaccum or coolant lines, some things need to be cooled and others need a use/reference of engine load (vaccum). In terms of wiring, it helps to understand the principles of input and output. The ECM/PCM is a computer. It requires inputs and gives outputs. Things like sensors are the inputs, whereas things like solenoids/actuators are outputs. For example; a coolant temp sensor is an input, for many things within the network. While a wastegate on a turbo is an output. To understand the maze of wires and hoses you first need to understand the components themselves. That is the unfortunate reality. To understand why a wire goes to a certain place, you kind of need to understand where it is going and what it may do there. If you have a specific question beyond that scope I'm happy to attempt to answer.
>>
>>27605964
I feel the need to add. When you first look at this maze, it can seem intimidating. Once you start to understand the puzzle, you begin to look at things, trace them to their origin and start to make assessments. I used to be so scared of the maze, but now i see a hose or a sensor and begin to make assessments, start to realize it's function and see the puzzle laid out before me.

If you are confused about a hose, see where it goes, does it go to the intake? It is vaccum. Does it go to the block/cooling system? Coolant. If you are confused about a wire, do not see the wires, they are irrelevant. The wires are a means to an end. The inputs and the outputs are more important than the wires.

It really depends on the car and what you're doing. I would get the biggest I can afford, unless you're working on something really close to the ground, then go with some sort of low profile jack.

I put LEDs in but they're still less bright than they're supposed to be and I can't see at night. I think it's a wiring problem at this point, like the wires powering the headlights have gone bad? I've never had to deal with an electrical issue so don't even understand that system. Anyone know what could be wrong? I don't think it's burning out the headlights because the LEDs weren't bright enough as soon as they were put on, I think the wiring is just not sending enough power but again idk

Go with a 3-ton low profile floor jack. They’re super common and can be had for $150 or a little less.

Anything non-low profile will be shitty for modern cars. I can’t even lift a standard Civic without a low profile jack, especially since modern unibody cars have retarded jack points.

And then the cheap $60-$70 “trolley jacks”, they suck, they don’t even lift high enough to get a CUV’s tires off the ground without blocks. Spend the extra $40 and you won’t regret it.

Walmart has “Blackjack”, Northern Tool has “Strongway” or “Arcan” for a better brand, Harbor Freight has “Pittsburgh” or “Daytona”, Home Depot has “Husky”, Lowes has “Craftsman”. All of those brands have a 3-ton low profile floor jack, grab whichever one you want because they’re all mostly the same except the Arcan and the most expensive Daytona Professional SuperDuty will be a little bit nicer

Almost all circuits are made up of positive (power), negative (ground) and control. You need to check it's getting power at the plug and check the resistance of the ground, clean the metal contacts for the bulb/connector. From the sounds of it you wouldn't know a scan tool from a multimeter, but you can buy a really cheap multimeter and do some tests if you want to learn. Buy a multimeter and google how to test a circuit or find a mechanic.

Is there a centralized resource for GM spare parts like Amayama? Dad's Cruze started having ABS ECU problems (basically the whole thing goes haywire and randomly messes with the brake pump, making the car uncontrollable under braking). I wanted to know what other GM cars use the same part so that maybe I can get it from a local wrecker.
>>
>>27609255
https://7zap.com/en/
or gmpartsdirect.com, find the part number and see if you can find interchange information anywhere
before replacing that, I would at least pull codes with a scan tool, preferably read live data as it's acting up. very good chance the ECU is fine and something like a bad wheel speed sensor is feeding it faulty data causing it to engage when it shouldn't.
>>
>>27609255
>>27609329
Also, before you replace a module, check to see if it's coded to that particular vin. A lot of newer cars have modules that can only be reprogrammed by a dealer or shop with a subscription to GM's software tools, and it will refuse to operate if you just swap it.
>>
>>27609331
It's a 2009 so I doubt it's serialized, thanks for the advice anon
>>
>>27609329
Also I forgot to mention: it's not just a wheel speed sensor, when the problem comes up it also lights up a few things on the dash (red brake light, ABS and TCS yellow lights and something else I'm not remembering), which is what led my dad to think that it's the ABS ECU that's faulty
>>
>>27609405
This just means a trouble code has been stored and the systems aren't working correctly. At very least I would connect a scanner that can read ABS module codes to find out what error is being indicated. ECU problem is only one of many possible causes.
>>
>>27609405
Did you scan it and get the codes? You need a little bit better scan tool than the basic Pxxxx emissions codes, but bluetooth scanners can often do it.

I don’t know if I would listen to boomer’s advice without pulling the codes first.

Also for the modules and stuff, sometimes you can find rebuilt-hacked-flashed stuff from ebay sellers. A coworker had a Chysler 300 dying at idle and throwing crazy dash lights, and he got a new ECU/PCM for like $200 IIRC. He emailed his VIN to the seller and seller did what he did and it worked just fine when I swapped it in. And then I had crazy lights and limp mode and “trans temp high” warning on a Jeep, and that was sone “Uxxxx” codes telling me bad wiring or connection or a bad TCM, and I found a junkyard TCM off ebay pretty cheep, as long as the cars had the same transmission they were fine. But I also had to reset all the dash lights with the scan too after swapping in the new part before it started running properly.

>>
>>27610256
pics? is it the rear of the hood that’s sticking up? like picrel?
>>
>>27610208
no, i wouldn't. it's precarious enough swapping a transmission on level ground, you're just asking for problems. tow it somewhere level
>>
>>27610208
i haven’t but i’ve seen my neighbors do it. i still wouldn’t recommend it since transmission jacks need uh..wheels. you can keep your car from moving on an incline, but the tranny jack might have different ideas. even if you’re doing it with a regular floor jack, i still wouldn’t trust it. it’s a shame they don’t have some sort of wheel lock in place.
>>
>>27609405
I tend to agree with these other guys. The TCS is built into the ABS unit. So them both going off does not immediately mean the unit is fucked. It could be a brake switch or a wheel speed sensor that is tripping codes. You need to know the code, you can't just throw parts at MILs. It very well could be that unit, but you're half assing the diagnosis and have selected the most expensive part in the system. Theres a dozen other sensors in that system that could be causing issues, the DTC will point you on the path.

I had my car(renault diesel engine) at a shop for drilling out a broken glow plug, install a new injector, a new timing belt and water pump.
When they test drove it after fixing all of that they recorded EGR fault codes which are P0403(doesn't trigger CEL) and P0409(triggers CEL). P0409 only triggering while giving gas and disappears while just idling.
I've suspected for a while that I've had a troubled EGR valve, but never got any fault codes or CEL before.
I'm thinking the EGR is broken now, but is there anything else that can trigger
>P0403 - Exhaust gas recirculation - circuit malfunction
>P0409 - Exhaust gas recirculation sensor A - circuit malfunction
?
Simply unplugging the connector then P0403 goes away and is replaced by P0402, and P0409 stays permanent.
Turning the key for just the electrical system, then unplugging the EGR connector I can hear the solenoid move.
According to a scanner the EGR is closed all the time, except once in a while it reads maximum open for a split second.

My car is 41 years old and the starter is just as old. It finally failed for the first time today. I had to hit the starter with a hammer in order to make it work again.
Question is, is this actually going to happen again?
Because this happened during a grocery trip. The car started flawlessly in my driveway like it always has, through all seasons of the year, but this grocery trip I fucked up in traffic and stalled the engine going to an intersection. Is it possible the starter is just worn *enough* and got left in a particularly bad position since I engaged it with the car still rolling in gear (with the clutch in, of course)? Do I really need a new starter since it worked flawlessly again after the hammer trick? It also still worked fine in my driveway when I tried it after getting home.

Can new struts alter alignment at all? yes
when i went to replace my old shocks (admittedly in an independent rear suspension rather than maccas struts) i noticed the top mount was at an angle relative to the bottom bolt that holds it to the wheel hub, rather than being perfectly perpendicular as per the factory manual. Once I put everything back together a noticeable wheel vibration I had at highway speeds was gone. I also took it to get aligned and the tech said
>see, these old toyotas, they really don't build them like they used to. perfect alignment after all these years

It just seems like the starter itself burns out. They're more compact and more powerful. But even it you request a bulky 70s style one at the auto parts they'll just ship you in the downsized 80s+ starter anyway. So idk where the problem resides.

I posted about this in the other thread. Checked all the transmission harnesses, TCM pins and got 00.1-4 ohm like pic rel. Low Coast Brake Clutch Solenoid is in spec too at 28.5 ohm resistance and works when I put a 9v to it. I'm about to put it together tomorrow and hope for the best after blasting the fuck out of the TCM with electrical contact cleaner. Is my diag correct that it's likely the TCM that went bad? Perhaps, thoroughly inspect whatever vehicle you are interested in and make an assessment on how much money/labor you're gonna sink into it for repairs and/or if it's even safe to drive home. Flood damaged vehicles can be very cursed and not able to be saved (I worked on vehicles that were in the path of a Florida hurricane). subarus are the easiest to pull engines in and out of.
remove the intake manifold as an assembly, fuel hoses detach from the driver side cyl4 runner, there's 3, supply, return, evap. label them. also disconnect the heater and rad hoses at this point.
4 bolts into the cyl heads on each side. 2 or 3 bulk connectors that separate the harness from the rest of the engine room harness. disconnect the crank pos sensor and knock sensor. you'll also need to disonnect the TB coolant hoses.
after the intake mani is off you can undo torque converter bolts if its an auto through the inspection port that has been revealed. after that you just need to attach a hoist to the engine, undo the bellhousing bolts, the dogbone mount on top of the engine connecting to the firewall area, and the two nuts on the bottom of the motor mounts under the car in the engine cradle. you can also disconnect the exhaust here too.
you will also need to support the transmission. you can raise the transmission as needed to create clearance, but the CV axles will limit this motion some.

get a decent hydraulic floor jack. you're going to have to spend like $200+, but it's a good investment as a quality one will last you forever. i use weekly the craftsman floor jack i bought at sears in 1996 and it's still going strong

check for leaking injectors (connect a gauge to the manifold, shut off the engine and see how quickly the pressure leaks down)
also try completely unplugging the MAF then starting it, if it runs better with the MAF unplugged that could point to a MAF issue

vacuum leaks, clogged injectors, and weak fuel pumps cause a lean condition, not a rich

didnt read the entire thread, next time just make a regular qtddtot i can ignore

I put it in and forgot about it as I was working on other shit.
I drained it yesterday though, looked fine I suppose

Really just thinking of the first place to look into. Vacuum leak? This doesn't happen in cooler weather at all.

Why do I get salt around my battery terminal?

do you have access to a factory service manual? there may be something in there about regassing the system and what values to check for. Car AC systems are typically charged by weight and not pressure.

To put on your food of course!
car guys have been doing that for years

No QTDDTOT up, in terms of reliability and cost over time would you guys rather have a used Toyota/Lexus or a used BMW with half the miles?

You are probably dropping volts. Go battery positive to starter positive with a voltmeter, then starter body to negative both while cranking. If you're dropping volts on either side replace/repair the relevant wire. If its negative, make sure the contact between the starter and the block is clean, make sure your main negative terminal and chassis contact point are clean. If it's positive you can try clean it, but it's likely just fried internally and needs replacement.

Dont fall for the mistake of checking resistance and thinking its all good. You need to load test it; ie voltage drop test.

i’m going to wing it and try to replace the clutch on a friend’s 350z tomorrow. any advice? tips? anything in particular i should look out for on this car? (i.e. does it have some retarded star shaped bolts i cant avoid?) i dont have any star shaped sockets. i have a sneaking suspicion there will be some down there and lord knows those things strip like butter.
VQ35DE btw. not sure if that matters.

it's corrosion. clean it off, sand the terminals clean, put them back on tightly, and coat everything with fluid film
