from other thread

Car cost 1500ish.

In total all parts cost around 1500.

plus another 300-500 in engine oil, filters and other various items.

With the market we didn't end up losing money.

We could have bought a better one from the start for 3000, and we'd have a high mileage 240 with a bad engine but one that still ran.

Instead we spent 3000 dollars and have a 240 which will mechanically probably outlive me if I am honest.

Included in the total is the cost for tools as well. Valve spring compressor, engine lift, engine stand, ring compressor etc.

I've previously worked on cars quite a lot but I've never had a good reason to lift or engine swap a car before until now.

It's a coupe.
Uncle's is a convertible.
Fastback wasn't available until '65.

There's a lot of debate on 64 1/2 vs 65.
Fords official standing is that the first year of Mustang was "65 and the 64 1/2's were simply a pre-release (like how you can already get 2025 models today).
But there's enough of a difference to classify them separately.
64 1/2 had generators for example and some interior pieces are not interchangeable with 65/66.
Also weird trivia- the chrome lip on the hood was not installed on any 64 1/2, although the mounting holes are present. The supplier for Ford could not provide them in time.

Well it's coming to that time where I gotta start putting together a build for this engine rebuild or swap... I've got the basic idea I want to destroke a 360 (or the 318 I have) and basically turn it into a poor man's 302 (Ford/Chevy) Trans Am engine and spin it to 7000-8000 RPM for a road racer feel.

>360 has 4.000" bores and a custom crank could be made like a 3.000" unit from the Ford/Chevy units, but has a 2.81" main journal diameter. With a 3.000" crank that would bring the displacement down to 301.59ci (exactly matching the Ford/Chevy units). AFAIK the 2.81 main journal diameter might be an issue for high speed operation, but possibly only past the target RPMs if my bubbalore serves me right so I'll need to consult my textbooks.
>318 has 3.906" bores and could be overbored .060" to for a total displacement of 327ci, and like all other LA series small blocks has a 2.50" main journal diameter. With a 3.052" destroked crank that would bring the displacement down to 301.63ci (which is about as close to the total displacement of the Ford/Chevy unit as possible.)
>For both, largely basing the design on the Chevy unit would keep costs down since it didn't have a bunch of added extras that would take a lot of time an extra money to add with no real benefit. I do plan on adding head studs at the very least which neither had AFAIK.

Of course... Could always go with a 304.5ci like the destroked 340 units used in the T/As and AARs... Not sure how much it matters other than autism.

Currently digging through my library to try and find the information I need on high RPM operation but figured I'd ask for here since it's usually pretty helpful...

Before you ask
>"Why don't you just by X, Y, or Z engine instead?"
I want a Mopar engine for my Mopar, but I also want an engine Chrysler never built. I admire a lot of these Trans Am homologation special road racers but they're way out of my price range so I figure I'll just build the next best thing on a body style I prefer.

Kinda bullshit I can't reasonably use trailer tires on my car, unless the internet is lying to me, which it never does

It's the only place I can find tires in my size 195/75/r14

Is the size up 205/75/r14 just as good?
Can I change rimsize on my car easily like I think it is? Just new bigger steelies and get thinner tire? What changes? Less smooth ride?

What's this weird flaky metal paint they used on old cars, was upset I couldn't shine it up
>>
>>27587730
>What's this weird flaky metal paint they used on old cars, was upset I couldn't shine it up
Metal flake?
It's like metallic or pearl but big chunks.
Popular in old fiberglass jet boats.

And yes you can change rim and tire sizes that easily (to an extent).
Going from 195/75/14 to 205/75/14 is minimal. No need for different rims.
It will be slightly wider and slightly taller- 10mm wider and 7.5mm taller to be exact.
But the "wider" portion is at the tread- because of rim width and how the tire "balloons" on the sides it may not be any wider at the midpoint of the sidewall.
Extremely low chance of clearance or fitment issues.

I'm guessing the seat adjustment thing is boomerlore but I'll check when I get a chance this afternoon.
Never driven this car.
It's been sitting for 30 years.
>ran when parked.
It's been in the family since new.
It might be 100% original, I haven't found anything that's been replaced (including factory brake shoes) so I know for a fact the seat has never been changed or modified.
>>
>>27587730
Are you referring to the part that's flaking off metal or is the paint actually a metallic?

The Ford 302/Pontiac 303 for Trans Am racing was just to make sure they didn't go over the 5.0L cap.
1970 Camaro (for example) with the 305 is legal in Trans Am.
The Ford 302 is 4.949L so there's plenty of cc's to work with.

So I would say boomerlore.
Although there's an incredibly slim chance that some pre-production cars shipped without adjusting rails- like maybe the 64 1/2 used in the James Bond movie (?).
But again, very slim chance and I'm just playing devils advocate for some bullshit Fudd tale that MAYBE a couple of cars, somewhere, for some reason were shipped that way.

And for the record, I checked the consecutive unit number and this is actually an early 64 1/2
>>
>>27588140
The 340 is just another LA block.
Since it's not a matching numbers build it shouldn't matter if you start with a 318.
It would be cool to come up on a set of vintage heads and intake but just grab the summit catalog and build accordingly.

It's enamel. You can still find places that will sell it online, just is kinda expensive for shipping.

>enamel
Probably, if it's original.
Could be powdercoat. Doubtful but not sure what that is (grille on a DeSoto?).
But powdercoat is going to have that look (my Cobra R knockoff rims are silver with pearl/metal flake) and be a lot easier to fidlnd a shop to do it.
Hell, you can do it at home in an electric oven (gas will probably blow off the powder), don't even need a static charge if you have a steady hand.
>>
>>27588957
I misspoke earlier.
I forgot metric is from the rim to the tread.
So a 205/75/14 is 205mm tread width and then 75% of that 205 from the rim to the tread. So the entire tire would be 15mm taller.
Still not a big deal- I've seen 4x that difference just in tread depth between manufacturers in the same size tire.
205 is basically interchangeable, you could probably get away with 215's or 225's, but you'd have to go down to 70 series profile or smaller to compensate.

For comparison a 1990 V8 fox body has 225/60/15 from the factory.
275/40/17 fit in the rear without rubbing and 245/45/17 fit in the front without rubbing. Even though one is 40 profile and one is 45, they are basically the same height because it's a percentage of the tread width and visually they look the same from the side.
Metric system is lame.
Why couldn't they just stick with the 33x12.50x15 format....
>>
One of the more beautiful cars ever made. Volvo P1800.
>>
>>27589178
Oh ya.
1990 mustang with a 4 banger factory tire size is 195/75/14.
That was kind of my point , just skipped over that line when typing and not going back to make surr my train of thought made it into the post.
Not saying you can squeeze in 275's but that gives you an idea of hiw much room is in factory wheel wells.
Oddly enough, there's a plate welded onto the lower a-arm on a fox body that a 17" rim will rub on....

>>
>>27588604
Yeah, I was kinda thinking that early on but unless some X or J heads fall into my lap for the right price and come clean after magnafluxing them then it's unlikely, especially since putting the wrong size heads on either of those blocks would probably lower compression without some tricknology with the decking and pistons which I'm not sure I'm quite as comfortable with doing. I have some rough ballpark figures for CCs I need to push on combustion chambers and will try to just match heads roughly to that and port them or modify them from there accordingly, and if that doesn't work move on. Might consult a more experienced engine builder first about the heads issue for an opinion if I don't figure something out between now and then. I'm unsure if I should get a custom ground camshaft copying the Duntov 30/30 or not... Or do a weird hybrid of the 30/30 but with an offset closer to the 273 HiPo/D-dart so it gets a bit closer to the cackle those had even if that's purely vanity and would probably hurt performance. I'll have to do the math and see if I can get a nice middleground that will get the sound and not hurt the performance metrics I'm aiming for.

How much would it run me to modernize an old Mustang? Buy an old one with a good rust free body; but otherwise ruined and then go to town on it until it runs like a modern Mustang, maybe throw a Coyote crate engine in it. I love the look of the old Mustangs but I'd like something I could daily and that had a decent amount of speed.
>>
>>27589844
How old? A v6 foxbody is cheap and plentiful. Mustang II can be had, but will be difficult, earlier than that and you're spending dough.

there are plenty of restomods floating around, buy one and figure out if you even like the car or not, most people who go through the effort of restomodding a car realize power wasnt their problem. seems like that would save the effort.

Removed the fuck usless old cleaner air box on the carb, didn't have the hoses or anything to it anyway, and they didn't sell the slimline filters for it anymore, the bypass gas from the case was venting straight into my cabin.

Just worrying about the bend in the bypass hose a bit, might cut it to lessen the kink it's getting, not sure if it will plug eventually
>>
>>27592708
The older one had the crank case air (with oil in it) on the other side of the filter, new cap has the filter on the outside,is having that oily air enter the carb gonna fuck me up? Should I just run the vent hose straight under the car and not my problem this shit?

British Flatheads have the crab dizzy, not the "modern" 8BA style. By the time I import/source all the needed 8BA parts and swap/covert everything over to what's needed to do a Chevy conversion, I'd be well above the price and effort required for just a simple e-fire dizzy that bolts right on.

You can just run it to the intake like other anon said.
Some carbs have a port for this in the baseplate.
Some 1" spacers (between carb and intake) have a port for it. Good luck getting a boomer to let go of one of those from his parts box though. And no, you can't have one of mine.
Or you can do pic related which would be the "proper" option.

No idea, but we have a Stromberg e-fire on our 1st pilot and they're easy to come by, unlike the petronix which would need to be imported. If the points ever go bad on this one, we'd probably just put an e-fire on it.

Well, the garage we do have has a Mk2 Daimler V8 and a Vanden Plas 1100 in it, so... technically yes, but also no, because it is full. It'll sit on the driveway for now until we get rid of things and make space. We've sold the 1st Pilot to a friend of ours, so we only have to worry about space for one.

>Should I just run the vent hose straight under the car and not my problem this shit?
Since the engine has more blow-by than the PCV can handle (There is vacuum at the PCV, right?), then I'd just set up a road draft tube off the fresh air inlet somehow. That much vapor return will make it run poorly which I learned with a Chevy 305 in a Shamu Caprice some years ago. Have the hose hang below the engine a bit into the airflow under the car and cut the end at a 45 degree with the angle cut towards the rear.I used 3/4 since that's what I had. Not sure if 5/8's would make for a stronger "pull" from the pressure drop at the end or if larger would help flow due to pressure from within the engine.

Just remember, when looking for a replacement engine Ford changed the internal balance from 28oz-in to 50oz-in in 1981 so you can't use the older dampers and flywheels on the newer assemblies

>Ford changed the internal balance from 28oz-in to 50oz-in in 1981 so you can't use the older dampers and flywheels on the newer assemblies
Well you "can" if you have the crank rebalanced.
Obviously not worth it for a run-of-the-mill stock cast crank but if you have a forged setup you can convert over.
>>

if you didn't have tach heres some calcuations.
205/70r15 tire, th350, 2.73 rear you would be 3977 rpms. a taller tire would lower you rpms as well as higer ratio like 2.29 2.56. a shorter tire or lower ratio like 3.08 3.23 3.73 would raise rpm at speed
http://chevellestuff.net/tools/rpm_calculator.htm
How long did you drive at this speed for? could have built up some heat in both engine and trans especially if low/poor oil levels

I don't know what the fuck I did differently when fiddling with the carb but after taking her on the highway at 3AM I was able to get the secondaries open and scare the shit out of the drunks (God bless glasspacks.) even if I had to roll the car in neutral half a block down in front of a McMansion so I wasn't starting the car beside the neighbors I actually likes's houses.

Anyone know of any decent CO detecting equipment? I've got all the windows down currently any time I drive and my eyes are burning every time like I'm getting CO dumped into and trapped in the cabin. Had a pretty nasty headache after driving for about 4 hours today that went away after a 3 hour nap. I suspect because some interior parts have been removed in prep for eventually stripping everything for painting that there may be CO getting in through larger holes.
>>
>>27595997
Hope it was damn near free since I can see it needs 6 truck tires and a muffler right off the bat.

took off the john deere scrap iron and all thread rod that was previously holding my alternator on, it does not fit but I think I can make two bolt holes line up on the head.
if I can swap this serpentine pulley on and sight it with this crank pulley and it lines up I'll probably try and modify it to work so I'll have a matching cast aluminum truck ac/ps bracket.
then I'll just be missing a water pump pulley and will have to make an ac bypass idler till I get around to finishing that.

I had a curiosity strike me today. The fairmont dropped in 78 with the 200ci. Did they not realize they didnt have enough of that engine? Was the 2.8 substantially more driveable or had better economy? With aluminum heads, water pump and brackets you can trim it down just over 400 pounds which is just a few pounds away from the (iirc) 385 lbs for a stocker 5.0
If you're doing the min/max for a drag car it would make sense (maybe).
But a full tank of gas will make more of a difference than an engine swap.

It's really impressive how long you stick to trying to make fun of others when you were literally a homeless person who used their car as a toilet AND YOU SLEPT IN IT. We've seen photos of you, you look like you're still homeless somehow, despite somehow getting into section 8 housing, and somehow you support your drug habit while buying a slew of what can only be described as scrap metal.

You lack mechanical aptitude, social skills, and probably personal hygiene. I may not be a great mechanic, but I don't pretend to be better than anyone here.

You're one of the main reasons I stopped coming here, and I put up with a lot of shit over the years, yet somehow you make every thread a waste of digital space because it's just retard wrangling when you're involved. I'm currently battling lung cancer and yet I'd say my life is still 100 times better than yours.

suprised to find no rot under the ragtop
i probably wouldnt have disturbed it but the po gutted all but the driver c pilar.
my plans for this car are
convert to serpentine
put ebay turbo header/hot side on
do the front control arms and tierods and rear control arm bushings (I have a spare set of stock control arms with the circle bushings that you can still get replacements for)
probably put fuel tanks gromets and vents innit
thinking about putting a jenny shifter and a shift kit cause I dont want every single car I have to be manual swapped and i hate the lokar push buttons.
Id rather it be a column shift but that shits all missing and somebody already hacked a floor shift into it.
might also put a minispool in it.
dont know alot about turbos but I think itd be badass.
the motor needs to come out because theres a motor mount bolt broke off in the block, I cant get a good eye on it but i figure if I cant get it out the welding shop in town can.

Glass is intact.
That's half of the cab so you're off to a good start.

If any of the seals leak I would suggest trying black RTV to seal it up before you start pulling glass (im guessing those seals are out of production and not easily sourced)- once you go that route it becames an entire new can of worms.
You can pull back the edge of the seal and lay in a bead and/or fill in cracks and wipe the surface smooth before it cures and get decent semi-permanent fix that looks ok.
>>
>>27607873
Warmed over 351w. Edelbrock intake, holley 700dp (only good carb I had when I did the engine swap), shorty equal length headers, dual Flowmaster 40 series, no cats, msd 6AL, C6 with an 1800 stall converter, NP208, 4.11's on a truetrack torsen in an 8.8", sitting on 33's.
Engine was rebuilt before I got it, ran well with no leaks in the donor so I didn't crack it open. Everything else listed is new/rebuilt

Here's an example of another C80. But it's really simple to spray and rebuild.

I've gotta talk to a sandblaster about the cab and then i'll paint it myself.

Going to connect up a battery and see if it will start atleast check if the starter motor is good and alternator/generator
