Not hard when each dealer only ordered one lol. Look, I’m really not a beaver or a spec sheet warrior but the zx4r just doesn’t make any sense. The price gap between it and the zx6r is just too small to not go with the 600cc. If it’s the seating position of the zx4r you want then you’re always going to be better off with something like a cbr650r, rs660 or that new daytona.

After riding a two stroke for the first time I'm thinking about getting one for a trail bike. My 501 can do anything, but it's a lot to handle for an inexperienced rider in the really tight single track I do sometimes, and when I start riding mountains in the spring it will be a little easier to haul up hills. Should I go with a 150 or just go straight to a 250 and git gud

Hi
>>
>>27596661
bear in mind that book was first written in like the early 1980s. Motorcycling started taking off with the general public in the 70s, and by the late 70s/early 80s you were starting to see the first supersport bikes being sold to the general public. There were a lot of inexperienced people riding very powerful machines and the info in the book was a good way to help keep yourself alive, especially considering back then you couldn't just watch youtube videos or hop on a forum. Unless you knew somebody who raced professionally chances are you'd never really heard anyone talk seriously about countersteering, scanning, power bands, etc.

You ever dealt with crosswinds so bad you have to countersteer the wrong way in a bend in the highway even going below the speed limit, square in the middle of your bike's power band? My whole rider brain is screaming WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG. At least there's a spot with cheap gas and cute waitresses waiting for me at the finish line. Next time I come out here it's with my truck or in some giant Harley tourer or a Gold Wing.

What's /dbt/ opinion on warming up the bike? I commute with a indestructible NC750 and the hell will freeze over before the engine will have any issues. so i dont care.

The local Indian dealer here also sells Royal Enfields, they let me test ride a few. I haven't ridden the Super Meteor but I rode an Interceptor, whatever they call their 350, and then that Himalayan ADV bike.

Honestly I don't see what the hype is about, yeah they're cheap, but the second you sit on one you can tell it's cheap Indian shit that's barely a step above Chinese as far as quality control. Took forever to get the Himalaya to start up and not just sputter out and die, and when I finally got going on it I felt like I was riding something a kid built in the garage out of spare parts. Everything was rattly, it sounded like a toy. Lots of cheap plastic, loose fittings, lots of parts that you can tell are just generic alibaba shit. The only appeal behind them is that they're cheap. I get that the retro aesthetic is cool but if you want a stock bike that has the old school look just get a Kawasaki W650/800. You get way more bike and you get it from a trusted manufacturer. I owned a W800 cafe for about a year before I traded it in for a 900RS. It was only maybe $2000 more than a RE Interceptor but it's not a janky plastic piece of shit.
>>
>>27596974
I have a lot of anxiety around leaving soft luggage on a bike unattended.
>>
>>27596998
yeah that's a fair point to be honest
>>
>>27596994
>>27596979
Oh yeah and when I rode the Interceptor the mirror actually fell off while it was just idling in the parking lot. If it was just a one time thing I'd write it off as the dealer not giving it a once over, but in all 3 of their bikes I rode I noticed all 3 were cheaply made pieces of shit. So I think it's just all of them are like that. I think the engines are Chinese junk too but I can't be certain
>>

>>
>>27596994
This is why the poor stay poor. They spend 65% of the cost of a quality to bike to buy some piece of shit version which inevitable causes them to go spend the full amount for money on the bike they should have bought in the first place and now they've spent 165%. This is the same reason my dumbass cousin bought an $800 couch which broke within 4 months of getting it instead of spending the $2k in a quality one that would have lasted him a decade. Poor people are just bad with money.
>>

>>
>>27596986
maybe, problem is the nearest track to me is like an hour and a half away. Which isn't horrible I guess but I feel like I'd be really out of place there, I've never really ridden my CBR anywhere near it's capabilities and I don't really have much in the way of racing skills. It's only been this last year I mustered up the courage to start getting a leg down and it's hardly impressive

>>
>>27597023
But I'm not poor either.
>>
>>27597010
Yeah I'd agree honestly, I've had a few friends that were the terminally broke type. They're constantly getting into and out of hobbies and it's usually because they get interested in something, buy the cheapest shit they can get because they're impatient and don't want to save up the money for quality, and then they get frustrated at their shit and quit. Just last year a buddy of mine finally decided to start riding. He bought some old Iron 883 off of facebook marketplace and had me take a look at it. I agreed, and there were tons of red flags for it (lots of bolt-on custom shit by someone you could tell didn't know what they were doing, scratches that the guy belatedly admitted were from "having to lay 'er down," trouble starting). I advised him not to buy it and to just save up money for a little while and get something from a dealer. But he's impatient as all fuck and didn't want to miss out on the riding weather, so he bought it and within like 2 months the piece of shit broke down for good. He took it to a shop and they quoted him like a few thousand dollars for several costly repairs and he just sold the bike for parts and doesn't ride anymore

>tl;dr
Being poor and impatient is a recipe for disaster

>>
>>27597020
90 minutes each way isn't GOOD but it's not at all BAD either, if you have means to transport the bike, bring a tent and most should allow overnight camping the day before. The track is THE place to learn, not just for people who are already experts. You will also typically never find a more supportive community, almost everyone is willing to lend shade, water, tools, just bring your own supplies and be ready to share in kind.
>>
>>27597036
I'm guessing they're owned by a parent company or something. The Indian dealers I've met usually seem to be pretty good about allowing test rides and stuff, so if you're interested in REs by all means try one out. But I was pretty disappointed with them, like I said the W800 is a much better option for a retro bike on the market that actually looks and feels period correct without being cheap Indian shit
>>
>>27596889

Bummer, sorry to hear that man. Dealerships in America tend to be pretty hit or miss. The Harley and Indian dealers where I live are owned by pretty good guys, they regularly put on all kinds of community events and actually encourage people to test ride their bikes before they buy them. But on the flip side of the coin the local Kawasaki dealer is an absolute cunt. I went there once because I was going to trade in my W800 for the 900RS, I had the title with me and like $12,000 in cash. Guy lied to me and said I couldn't test ride it because it wasn't serviced even though I could feel the fuel in the tank and could see that it was serviced. Then when I tried throwing a leg over to at least see how it fit me he got pissy and told me to get off of it, and then implied I didn't have the money to afford it anyway. So I left and got one somewhere else. I'm thinking about going back to show him my new bike but I shouldn't be a vindictive person like that

>yeah they're cheap, but the second you sit on one you can tell it's cheap Indian shit that's barely a step above Chinese
on poor countries like mine that is called a "premium" bike lmao

I ask because every other known manufacture likke yamaha, honda and Kawasaki are charging absurd prices for their bikes around here. a Lot of indian and chinese manufactures are coming over now, Bajaj is already here and tvs will soon follow.

I would love to have a good honda or yamaha bike but they don't sell the same models around here and the insurance for the existing ones skyrocketed overnight due to the huge amount of robberies we are getting

some one even made a small app showing all the stolen bikes in my state, red dots are bikes that were stolen at gun point.

https://www.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/26c51d41174c453fba750ac3e17b5baf

so my options are getting an royal enfield or getting something like an old 883 or some other cruiser bike.

If you get an Enfield, my advice would be to go over it after you buy it and tighten everything up and change out a lot of the junk parts. Getting aftermarket seats, mirrors, grips, etc. will go a long way to making it more comfortable. Depending on how mechanically inclined you are you could start messing with some other stuff too and improving it. In a way you should consider yourself lucky, taking a cheap shitty motorcycle and turning it into something cool and personalized is what motorcycling culture was built on in the 50s and 60s. Most people in the West don't get to experience that anymore unless they choose to because most bikes sold over here aren't garbage and don't need to be rebuilt
>>
>>27597067
I feel that man. The harley dealerships by me are always putting on shit. They don't care who shows up, it's just a good time. There's one now putting on a bike week event in the obx area. That's where I bought my last bike at. Super chill.
The newer of the indian dealers by me is a lil better than the original one. They were cunts because they were the only Indian dealers in town for a long time. But the newer one has a pretty laid back owner and I've worked with a few of his coworkers in the past and we get along pretty good.

But after. It's always good practice to take your money elsewhere when the salesman is a cunt. Fuck um

not going to happen because the biggest criminal factions successfully infiltrated almost every branch of the government and they basically rule a lot of politicians trough blackmail. That and a lot of our politicians are just straight up inept. Just for you to have an idea we have here a fucking public transportation mafia that for almost 20 years got in the way of making new subway lines/stations because they own all available busses and wanted the poorest regions to keep using them, while most of our subway lines are privately owned.

Mostly money, tbch. An actual bike for adults is going to cost at least twice as much, even if I get a beat-up used one.
>>
>>27597366
If you're really that broke you'd have other priorities. Otherwise save up and buy a Grom/Trail125.

If you want to save money, then get a bicycle, because once you blow cash on motorcycle, you'll have to spend a quarter or a third of its price on gear (helmet, jacket, trousers, boots).

is there a worse feeling than when your bike isn't running and you're not sure why? it fucking ruins my life every time. I'll be totally fine one moment and then suddenly remember there's an oil leak or it's got a rough idle and my entire day goes to shit.
worst of all is when it hits me at work or something where I'm completely unable to work on fixing it or researching it and so I just have to sit with the anxiety.
>>
>>27597506
>is there a worse feeling than when your bike isn't running and you're not sure why?
yeah, it's when you work at sea on cargo ships and your girlfriend is back home fucking somebody else and you know it and the fucker is living in your apartment that you pay for and fucking her on your bed and you can't get home to do anything about it because it's the middle of the pandemic and everything is locked down and you've got gangway up orders so you're 4 months overdue for relief and you've been gone for 10 months now and Jody's been fucking her the whole time and they won't let you go home and also she sells some of your collectible vintage firearms to buy gifts for him so he can wear some nice new shoes while he fucks your fucking girlfriend on your fucking bed and there's nothing nobody can do about it and you have to hear status updates from your friends every couple days about what she sold this time and where she was seen with the guy and he's fucking her, he's really fucking her and he's fucking her on YOUR bed

fuck this is my situation too. I have a narrow window every evening where the heat is tolerable and the bugs haven't yet come out in full force.

anyways use a rubber mallet (or a regular sledge and a wood block if you need to be more forceful) to hammer that son of a bitch out. not sure how exactly you've lifted your bike but a rear stand + block under rear wheel would probably also help (plus you're gonna need a proper rear stand anyways if you really wanna be a wrencher).

Well I made it back over the mountains by following boom-fu.

At one point I was going 55 in a 70 due to crosswinds, rain, and slick pavement, and I was banging around over 7000rpm almost the whole way, but I did it.

I can't believe it but I've been prevented from riding all weekend because I broke a shoelace on one of my riding shoes. Life is pain when something so stupid gets in your way.

I see that map and I laugh. The VERY BEST those 3rd world countries could do in my lifetime was not shit themselves. They can't feed themselves. The wheel is alien tech to them and their highest goal in life is to immigrate west.

Tell me, what exactly are you worried your laces are going to get caught on? Or perhaps a better question, what are you worried they're going to get caught on that wouldn't immediately rip the lace in half?

>>
>>27597656

>>
>>27597631
Do you not have a single other pair of shoes you could have taken the lace from? Or do you want to ride so little that even that is too much effort for you?

>>27597656
They can get caught on shit without you realising, then you go to put your foot down when stopped and can't and then you fall over and everyone laughs.

One pair of my boots does have laces but they're largely aesthetic as there's a zip on the side, and there's an elastic strap on the tongue for tucking the laces under.
>>
>>27597655
My riding shoes are fine and they're comfy enough to keep on at work all day.
>>27597673
I don't have anything with laces nearly long enough for these.

Just got a z400 as my first bike. Riding a motorcycle is harder than I thought.
I notice engine braking seems to be a lot stronger than a manual car; just releasing the throttle decelerates me by 10mph. Gearing seems to be a lot shorter too so I'm not sure the appropriate gear to downshift to when coming to a stop.
>>
>>27597739
Just gotta learn the feel anon.

>>
>>27597616
ninja is a sport bike, you're sitting straight up and down practically. need a supersport riding position. R6 felt the most natural of like 15 bikes I sat on but that premium they're carrying is ridiculous. I could barely find any clean examples anyway
>>
>>27597796
I envy your back. Mine wouldn't be able to handle a supersport.
>>
>>27597803
lose weight and do some planks, fix your core. I can plank 3mins which isn't too crazy but it helps me avoid back pain I think.
>>
>>27597667
It shouldn't need to be hammered ALL the way out, just enough to be able to grab it on the other side. Use a rubber mallet to avoid deforming the tube.
>>27597739
You can generally upshift every 15mph on a twin, don't worry about the actual gear number and just focus on what the engine sounds and feels like.
>>
>>27597817
No need to lose weight. Back just isn't what it used to be.
>>
>>27597739
I approach the stop in second and switch into first when I'm certain I'll be stopping.
>>
>>27597867
That's correct.
>>
>>27597867
Basically this but it's not a hard and fast rule for me.
>>27597739
Make sure you're shifting through every gear and not skipping gears or just holding the clutch in 4th and coming to a stop.
>>
>>27597790
I learned this in the MSF but need to practice more. I'm still a bit scared when the bike leans in sharp corners even at low speed. Thanks for the advice.
>>27597821
yes, I generally upshift at about 5k-6k rpm
>>27597867
>>27597891
I need to be better prepared for downshifting since I noticed I started downshifting a bit too late into the stop. Gonna try and get some practice in empty parking lots afterword next week.
>>
>>27597899
Definitely practice as much as you can, and find some drills. Having a practice regime means you won't forget something or will keep you motivated. I used to do this
>Quick accelerate and hard brake, starting at 15km/h and working up to 60 (wasn't enough room in the carpark to go faster). This heaps warm up the tyres. Would aim to get the back wheel off the ground just as I stopped.
>U turns inside carparks. Figure out what the absolute tightest the bike can U turn by walking it and then aiming to do that with feet up. Use the car park lines to keep track of progress, both directions
>Figure 8s. Same as above but not stopping between u turns
>Turning circles as tight as I can. Really helps leaning to counter lean
>Slalom, practice tight turns, getting the bike leaned over quicker, quick direction changes etc.
>slow ride, see if I can keep walking pace up for as long as I can
I do that about once every month or so. I should do it more often.
