I already have my enthusiast car and my 20 year old beater is screaming at me to kill it. 215k miles on it but Ill drive it till the wheels fall off. In the meantime what is the transport meta for a solely-GM man? Low-mile well maintained 15-20yo sedan? Finance new? Buy 5yo used? My enthusiast vehicle is a truck so I don't need one of those. Dont care much about gas mileage or doors, just reliability. Have been looking at low-mile Monte Carlos from the early 00s.

I'd say anything with the Buick 3800 would do you well. The Monte Carlo you posted, a Impala, or the various Buicks and Pontiacs with the 3800.

The 2004 to 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix and the 2006 to 2008 Buick Lucerne both had the 3800 series 3 so those would be the most recent models you could get with the last iteration of the old war horse engine.

I really like them, I just have been told a bunch of different ways to skin this cat by different people.
>you need a 5yo car with 40k miles itll get you anywhere
>you should buy as many running driving $1500 beaters as you can
>just buy a nice clean 20yo car with low miles
all I want is something to get me A-B that I can keep as nice as possible. I'm not done with beaters, but there's a time and place. Ideal car loadout is reliable backup/long distance car, beater, truck, and enthusiast vehicle. I'm a GM dude so that's all pretty simple to find. what is /o/s thoughts.

The Chevy SS was pretty rad. I didn't suggest it because its way more expensive than the Monte Carlo you posted. Honestly you might consider the most recent gen of Camaro too, Chevy did a good job with that car.

I'm not black. camaro is a dumb choice too, I just want an car. biggest level of desirable/unique would be a Monte SS or high trim vehicle. Those command stupid prices just for being more rare and valuable.

Then buy a fucking Volvo. You say you want a GM then you dismiss their cars as being for nogs.

its more just those options are performance-oriented. nugs drive gm as much as any other brand. just an attempt at humor.

caprice based. if I could find a low-mile one at a good price I wouldnt mind. My only concern is owning an older vehicle. I don't know if going back 5-10 years is a good choice (my beater is early 00s) I get there are pros and cons to everything, I'm just too inexperienced to know what's right for me.

Cadillac DTS if you can find one in good condition. Marketed as a grandpa car but with a performance engine in them, and they didn't suffer the problems that the earlier Northstars had with head gaskets. I have one approaching 190k miles and while wrenching on it is a bitch sometimes I have never experienced as smooth or nice of a ride in another car.

Since the Buick 3800 and the Panther platform ceased to exist America hasn't really been making great reliable commuter cars. They let the Japs take over that market and they focused on performance models, luxury models, trucks and SUVs.

That being the case I'd be inclined to tell you to get a 2008 Buick Grand Prix with the 3800 or if you really do want max reliability from a GM then a Pontiac Vibe; but that's cheating since its basically a Toyota Matrix with a Toyota engine and transmission.

I kinda noticed. after 2015 it seems like there are hardly any GM Vehicles. Looks like the 3800 might be something to ensure based on the replies here. My beater has the 3600 v6 and it's treated me well for 85k miles. Transmissions seemed to be GM's weak link... I fear mine is on the way out as it skips from first to third and has for years...
