They're generally pretty reliable as long as you follow the recommended 80% daily charge limit. They don't have very many issues and the batteries retain about 90% life after 200,000 miles.

A couple factors there, they really aren't that new anymore. Those cars are 5 or 6 years old, and most of them are close to 100k miles.
A lot of people still believe the crap that EV batteries only last 100k miles, and cost $50k by themselves which depresses the price.

As people realize these cars have better batteries than the first-gen cars, or 3rd party Model 3 upgrade packs start to appear the price will bounce back up.
Especially now that they are so cheap hobbyists can start to buy them as project vehicles. Expect to see more Model 3s turned into track toys, rally cars, and other off-road vehicles.
This really is the modern incarnation of the VW Beetle. A lot of people hated them, then they were cheap and people did all kinds of fun things with them, then the price rebounded.

Last I knew Model 3, even the latest Highland refresh was still 400v. The Performance got the motor out of a Model S, but it is the standard Model S motor which is still 400v and not the Plaid with its new 1000v system.

10 years ago small companies like Unplugged or McMurtry could have just turned up at a industry development day and had their professional driver set an official record. They can't do it anymore. So the little guys are out.

For the big guys the unfortunate reality of the car market right now, is nobody is really investing in competitive sports car platforms anymore. C8 seems to have been the last major new platform launch.
Companies are currently either just selling minor revisions of their old cars, partnering with other companies to make cars that aren't actually that competitive but fill the sports car niche, or hyping a car that is still years away.
The new Porsche 983, whatever they decide to call it is the next one to look forward to, but it isn't clear if they'll offer it in a race spec.

The FIA have been saying for years they would have an electric GT class, but they have been dragging their heels. Nobody is going to sell electric GT cars if there is no electric GT series with a spec for homologation.

Biggest problem for Hyundai, and all the other CCS brands is that there just aren't any 800v 350kW capable CCS chargers, and that they all have efficiency ratings and charging curves that make them slower to charge even at 350 than a Tesla at 250 or even 175. When 800v 350kW NACS becomes more common they'll be a better choice, but they need to improve the curve and make EVs that are more efficient. Ioniq 6 is decent, and could compare to a base Model 3 but it needs the chargers to support it.

Also most Tesla cars max out at 7.2kW on AC charging. Getting the 11kW or 16kW from AC is only on the higher-end models that need it because they are less efficient.
At least in my experience just getting everyone on NACS and putting 72kW or 10kW chargers in more places will probably mostly solve the charging problem.

Sounds like an easy trip to make with modern long-range EVs. Especially if he owns property there. Just plugged one of the newest generation of EVs in and it says 746 miles from two of the most distant locations in that state top up right before leaving, arrive at 20%.
It is only a ~750 mile trip, that's no problem for the new generation of long range electric cars. I don't understand the obsession with long range myself, but cars are popping up to serve the demand for it.
Older generation cars would probably need a stop or two, but then again so would most people and there's a bunch of fast chargers to make that trip so even cheap used EVs could do it.

How is that relevant? Costco still doesn't even host EV chargers, at least not any I've ever been to. Gas stations like Costco's are going to be in trouble when they're doing as little business as fast chargers.

On the contrary, EVs suck for cities. Nobody there owns property, and nobody has private parking. They are big markets that sit at ports or at the end of pipelines that deliver fuel right to them so they also aren't as affected by supply chain issues that can really screw over rural areas.
Out here in the boonies away from the coasts fuel has to be trucked in, and if they miss a shipment it can be days before another one arrives. EVs make the most sense for the rural Midwest. We could be really energy independent if we kicked the oil habit.

There's also the fact that oil companies have leveraged social media successfully, and hybrids are outselling EVs now. People want gas as a backup if they run out of battery. This is why Toyota went all in on hybrids and hydrogen.

$13 Per gallon equivalent with tax, so yes. Cost per mile on the other hand? It is often about the same as or a bit less than gas. Mostly thanks to EVs paying much higher road use fees than other vehicles that weight the same.
Of course the savings owning an EV come from minimizing the energy you buy from fast chargers.

Sure, but it is burning the oil and releasing the sequestered carbon that is at issue. Especially if done everywhere all the time at 20% efficiency.
Modern 50% efficient diesel might have a role for heavy freight, or backup power in extreme situations, but not for daily driving.

At $15 a kg hydrogen for a FCEV costs around $.21 a mile plus tax, and for a HICE would be $.50 a mile plus tax.

If a company could sell a FCEV with 40 or 60kWh battery buffer and 4 or 6kg of hydrogen and nation-wide hydrogen refueling had $7 a kg that could be a real winner.
But right now that doesn't seem possible. With fast charging now improving to the point they could deliver 300 miles in under 10 minutes the window of opportunity for hydrogen may have closed.
