How stupid of an idea would it be to buy a used Mercedes or BMW if you couldn't afford them new? Used ones that are about 10 years old are same or cheaper than similar Toyotas. Is the reliability and maintenance cost that bad?

I would say 3-5 years old. If it’s a good model, nothing expensive will break but it’ll still have lost half its value. 10 years and maybe you have to replace a transmission or engine. Also, by then all the luxury features are now standard in every modern shitbox.
