Bruce Meyers had this famous quote about "I made the top of the fenders flat so you had a place to set your beer".It was weird to hear him say it in person because he was pretty fucking old when I first met him.He told me another tale of the original Manx tub when he built it.He was finishing up the design and the only thing left was the inner fenderwell on the rear bench seat, he hadn't quite figured out how to shape it.His buddy stopped by in a "57 F100.While they were sitting in the garage Bruce was staring at the truck and had a flash of insight. So he said to his buddy "here's 20 bucks, take my car to the store and grab some more beer".As soon as his friend left he grabbed the petroleum jelly, slathered it onto the corners of the hood and laid some fiberglass to make molds and those became the shape of the inner fenderwells.

Bruce Meyers and Lynn Chenowth were friends from the early days of dune buggies. Lynn was one of the first to focus on tube frame sandrails and offer production models to the public. After a devastating lawsuit that involved a crash with one of his sandrails he sold Chenowth Racing, which struggled for some time before they secured a military contract- they're doing quite well today. His son (my old boss) Rory Chenowth went on to produce SV16's (Suspension Vehicle, 16" of travel) as well as the single-seater Mickey Thompson stadium racers. Meyers never stopped selling the Manx but many copycats had taken away his market share. He wanted to update the Manx to make it more appealing. So he brought in one of his cars and asked us to build a basic but functioning roll barThe shop supervisor was 6'4" so we used him as a guinea pig for headroom.

which is the SUV for the man who hates the army, hates soldiers, hates war veterans, hates the air force, hates the navy and wants an anti-military SUV in everything
Rory developed a brain tumor. I used to tell him it was an alien implant. He quit producing SV16's to focus on his health. Eventually he sold all the tooling, fixtures and remaining components to a friend. While we were clearing everything out of the shop I found the original proof A-arms for the stadium racers. Chatted with Rory's friend about them and asked what he wanted for them (all the jigs and fixtures for the stadium racers had been repurposed). He said give him a bottle of tequila and they're mine. So they cost me a 1.75L of Jose Cuervo.Rory told me when he first designed them he went to an auto parts warehouse and just started going through boxes of balljoints until he found some he liked. One's from a Toyota pickup, one's from a Ranger. I really wish I would have written down the years because I don't remember now.

Rory and his buddy Chuck were always in competition with eachother.Who had the nicer house (Rory won).Who had the bigger motorhome (Chuck won).Who had the fastest sandrail (competition suspended, to be continued in Valhalla). They started off with twin SV16's. Both powered by buick/rover aluminum V8's.Chuck converted to a MegaSquirt and a custom multiport intake after multiple lean-out conditions when hill climbing. Chuck was always going for more displacement, more cooling, lighter components whereas Rory's was unchanged from the original build.SV16's were available in many powertrain configurations- from 1600cc VW to SBC/turbo 350 combos. We had Mickey Thompson tires with a custom tread pattern- no longer available and difficult to come by.

Why are twin solid axle vehicles so rare? Most 4x4s have for IFS, couldn't it at least be an option to have SFA?
>>27639438So you're saying....>V8's mount them differently because of space constraints but if you're doing a custom install with an I4 that has space constraints you still want to mount it in a standard position.....because that's just how it's done.I didn't even say to mount it in front of the engine or some shit.I said there was plenty of room to rotate it or shift it around in the void between the engine and fenderwell for better exhaust routing. There was no forethought of what to do after it was bolted to the log exhaust.Since you're a diesel mechanic, tell me how many you've seen with the exhaust jammed between the starter and frame.
>>27639962The only reason you need a solid front axle is to flex on other losers on anime forums
someone tells you this person drives a jeep. what kind of person do you imagine immediately comes to mind?
>>27639962It fell off right as trucks and SUVs got more popular for daily driving. Just about everyone with a solid axle vehicle tried something to make it work but in the end IFS is going to be the better option for comfort. TTB didn't work out as a compromise, the Land Rover/Range Rover active suspension designs were too complex for their own good, and everyone else couldn't work out an improvement better than using coil springs. It's unfortunate, I've had a JL wrangler as a rental a couple times and it's pretty smooth for being solid all around. There was refinement to be had but no one cared enough to try.
>>27636592What engine is that?
>>27640072Every turbo is just bolted to a log manifold like that, that’s just how it’s done.On what axis are you recommending the turbo be rotated? After the turbo is bolted to the log manifold, the piping does the job of getting the exhaust to the back of the car.
>>27640282Here’s a cat C15, you will find every inline engine mounts their turbo in similar ways, just bolted straight up to the log manifold.Cummins, Detroit, CAT, they all mount this way.

>>27640489The hood exit because there was no room to turn the exhaust down and run the exhaust down, he should have mounted it forward like the other two.

>>27640493The complex mounting of this one was due to the enormous size of the down pipe, if the turbo were mounted near the engine on the manifold there would be no room for the down pipe to get past and under the car.
>>27640502>Oh you mean like how the dipshit cut his firewallDidn't he said he hammered it in?That's pretty standard practice for fitting swaps.
>>27640505Yoy know you're just reinforcing my point that the furfag should have mounted the turbo in a different location/orientation, right?

After a week to reflect now, the Cybertruck offroad app really puts the nail in the coffin for the Raptor and TRX, there's absolutely zero reason to buy either of them over the Cybertruck and laughably they somehow sometimes sell for more than the extremely price inflated Cybertruck. Really glad I didn't buy a TRX (wasn't really considering the Raptor).
>>27646579now this is ebin trolling
Can't get aurora and rig photographed together properly
Imagine even thinking about new trucks instead of building shitboxes
Why didn't AMC's air-cooled V-4 engine find a wider application in the civilian market?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M422_Mighty_MiteAir-cooled 108The 107.8 cu in (1.77 L) is an AMC designed air-cooled V4 engine that was used in AMC's lightweight aluminium-bodied M422 'Mighty Mite' military vehicle, built from January 1960 to January 1963 as an air transportable (by the helicopters of the time) Jeep for the U.S. Marine Corps.[1] This engine was unsuitable for regular passenger car use mainly due to its relatively small displacement and power output.Bore and stroke: 3+1⁄4-by-3+1⁄4-inch (82.6 mm × 82.6 mm)Compression: 7.5:1Horsepower: 52 hp (39 kW) @ 3,600 rpmTorque: 90 lb⋅ft (122 N⋅m) @ 2,500 rpm

Are all of the (internal) engine cleaner additives snakeoil?
>>27647367Not necessarily. ATF works well, though. Sometimes if an engine has been sitting for a decade or more, people will literally fill it to the top with ATF and let it sit for a week. What is your situation?
>>27647450Wouldn't be the first or last time someone pulled plugs and filled the cylinders with ATF.
>>27647450Normal use, just wanted to clean up any particulates that have accrued over last 15y. Trying to maintenance max
Very comfy day at a local event. Had lots of cool offroad stuff and free ice cream!
>>27647638Cool
bump
>>27647638>free ice creamheck yeah!
>>27647638>free ice creamDamn I missed out >tfw I get an alert that another TDI dropped in the junk yard yesterday >too busy working on my moms car to go>go today and when I get there the engine is already peeled apart and missing everything We need a border wall
>>27647367Lucas fuel injector cleaner is keeping my 2.5l escape alive right now. Idles like garbage without it. Not sure what I'm going to do as I can't afford another car right now. Only making $45k.
>>27650540>Idles like garbage without it.That's not how injector cleaner works.Try getting fuel from a different station or try a higher grade.
>>27650811How do I tell if it's bad gas? I go to a local chinamart equivalent so it should be good to go?Really don't want a higher octane as that'd be a big premium and I commute far.
>>27650865Change gas stations and see if it changes anything. Sending off fuel to a lab for testing would be pretty cost-prohibitive since you'd end up trying to test multiple stations. Cheapest gas usually isn't the best gas, but it depends entirely on your area. In my case, the cheapest gas tends to be "US Gas" which I'm pretty sure is owned by Conoco (Owned by Philips 66)
>>27647507Several short interval oil changes will clean it.
>>27651433I just dumped 2 cans of seafoam in a full tank of the "required" 93. Doing an oil change in 300 miles. But this amsoil is too expensive to do a couple in a row.
>>27651457Cheap no store brand oil is fine. A frequent oil change is better than an expensive oil change.
>>27650865I have a built engine that pings on 93 octane from Citgo brand gasoline (7-11) but no other brand.
>>27651430>not 37sLame
>>27636627What’s up with the rubber duck shit anyways? When I had a jeep we just had “the wave” which was gay but infinitely cooler than the duck thing.

>>27651600If only you could Google it :)
>>27651600White women and "dude jeep lmao" fags that managed to hamfist a trend to feel as if they're part of "the jeep community" because they don't offroad
>>27652201It was started by a Canadian woman
The ducks are the result of the feminization of society in general. Grown men now feel safe enough to openly display behavior that would have gotten them beat up in decades past.
>>27652916You're very emotionally invested in this.
>>27652943You're a faggot.
Have a 1998 Cherokee Sport 4.0l. Straight body, sagging headliner but mechanically doing alright at 250k miles on it. It’s been in my family for 25 years and been my DD since high school. At this point I’d like to move on from it as it’s not a great DD and I’m not using as a 4wheeler like it deserves to be. Any idea what I could get for it? PNW

>>27647638VA bros we are so back
Damn the wheel wells in the new GX are dumb. Sharp metal brackets that would have to be cut down to put on bigger tyres. No longer an offroad vehicle. I mean the 460 wasn't much better.

So the deuce is gone, and the truck is proper fucked, but the TJ trudges on.
>>27656624You sold the 2 1/2?
>>27656636Yeah, couldn't rationalize it anymore after a few hurricanes worth of maintenance. Went through almost 800 bucks worth of hub oil, grease, boots, and 1500 bucks of tires. There is a local collector I sold it to with the super singles. Was a bad ass response truck.... but that single owner cost was too high for me anymore. Was going to convert the truck into a response truck, but I snapped the frame in half on one side.
>>27656645F
>>27655817Do the neighbors names begin with "Ja" "Da" or "La"? I'm guessing yes.
>>27656662Looking for an F350 with the IDI and the crew cab to convert into truckasaurus recovery vehicle. Want something that can still go into disaster areas with enough supplies to make it worth it, and have the umph to clear the emergency workers routes. Also looking into a engine driven air pump cause the deuce was nice having all the air on tap.
>>27656669Hampton isn't a horrible area. It's just very pocketed. All the good jobs are on the other side of the water though and people hate waiting in the tunnel traffick. They have a really cool pirate festival every year where they hung blackbeards head!

Work truck blew the radiator so I guess Ill do ball joints on the GX today while I have the day offMaybe I'll take dash apart and do the aux port as well
>>27657254Offroad related how?
>>27657287Well the truck is technically off the road....
>>27657287Can't offroad if your balls are damaged
Well probably violated some federal safety law but passenger seat is way more comfortable now that it tilts back 15* or so.Might do the drivers seat to tilt that one back even more than the electric adjust allows. Car was made for Jap manlets thats for sure.
So are you going to dump all your good deuce pics one last time or not
>A Salt Tram Tower Was Vandalized in Death Valley.>A historic tram tower was pulled down and permanently damaged by an irresponsible driver in Death Valley National Park. Why are you fags like this?
>>27660605That’s cringe, I hate people who destroy history and old relics This is why I don’t share cabins and plane/helicopter crashes
>>276433943/4 ton trucks are too fucking heavy to be good offroad and have garbage weight distribution. I put a locking diff into the rear end of mine to deal with this issue and now both back wheels spin hopelessly if I drop a front wheel over a bank unless I load it down enough to sink the whole thing into any kind of mud hole.
>>27660933yeah. The Ford's come with a locking rear dif and I would add one to the front. the winch would have an air compressor - aired-down 37s should be OK. i mostly get into trouble in snow.as an aside, you can fit 40s on these new fords with with hardly any lift, it's insane. i wonder if we'll see e-rated 40" tires.
>>27660605Not one of us. The fucking retard was identified quickly because he perused facebook groups, either for his truck alone or for offroading. NPS stated on instagram that he ended up identifying himself through their tip line and intends to take full responsibility.>takes responsibility after getting caught>Death Valley NPS is already strict about where you're allowed to go off-trailThis shit is why many national parks or known trails end up getting restricted far more or closed off entirely. Retards acting like retards and ruining it for everyone else. Tragedy of the commons moment
>>27660605fuck this faggot. hope they throw the book at him.

>>27662870Are you going to polish out the cast finish inside the iron housing also?
>>27662870>5spdnice, which gearbox?

been gone a couple weeks out of town back to working on the jeepmaking a mount the diesel filter that places it near the ECU in the driver fender
Is it a good idea to get my car painted with truck bed liner paint? I saw a Mercedes vedieo with a guy that had his G painted like that and it looked cool. Does it make your cars exterior more durable?
>>27664928I wouldnt do it, my friend did it to his YJ and it's really hard to keep clean and it looks like shit after it gets sun faded
>>27664924So how does paying for refurbishing a salt tram truss from over a century ago in the middle of a desert reduce inflation?
