Get an OEM windblocker for it if you drive with the top down frequently. It really helps with wind buffeting and noise above about 30 mph. There are two versions for the NB, the early one that has the larger flap to allow easier parcel shelf access, and the later 04-05 one (at least in the states, not sure about UK availability since you guys got a million different special edition NB2s) which has a smaller flap to make room for a couple speakers which is nice as no NBs had headrest speakers.
>>
>>27676732
I was thinking of getting one with in-built speakers, as someone else here mentioned they found one (in the right colour for their interior). But wiring up the speakers doesn't sound simple.
I've seen a bunch of windblockers available here.
>>
>>27676750
Lol that was me, and it's out for delivery right now actually. If you have an aftermarket radio already, its pigtail should already have the 4 rear speaker wires ready to go. It's just a matter of running 4 wires through the center console and up to the parcel shelf, then bypassing the Bose pre-amp (if the windblocker is Bose and your Miata is not). I'm building a sub-harness for it with connectors on either end to be all fancy (and so I can unplug it at either end without needing to pull the wiring too), but that is going a bit above and beyond.

I have aftermarket head unit so maybe the wiring diagram is what I need.
pls take photos of your windblocker installation.

>>

1. Shit owners who don't do any maintenance.
2. the drainage holes are particularly at risk of getting blocked by dirt, trapping water inside, rusting the car out from the inside. That's easily solved using a trumpet cleaner, but see #1.

>>
>>27676980
A nice paint job is leagues better than a nice wrap, but I think a cheap paint job looks leagues worse than a cheap wrap. A wrap's issues mainly come from simple stuff like shitty cuts and poor application, whereas far more can go wrong with a cheap paintjob, and things like overspray and shitty prep can just ruin a car; If the wrap ends up shit, you can just just peel it off with little to no consequence.

I would be doing the wrap myself. The plan right now is to either prep the car myself and get a cheap paint job, or prep the car and then wrap myself.
>>
>>27677282
Then I'd go with the wrap for the reasons I previously listed. Far less to go wrong, and even if you do fuck it up you won't ruin your car.

Got it installed yesterday, god damn it makes a huge difference for the sound system. I never want to go back to just two door speakers in a Miata again. It was exactly as easy as I thought it was going to be. The radio's pigtail had its 4 wires for the rear unused, so you basically just extend them towards the right rear side of the parcel shelf. For the windblocker side, the Bose pre-amp inside has two pairs of red and green wires (positive and negative for each speaker, respectively). Snip those off the 8 pin molex connector on the pre-amp, unbolt the pre-amp since it's just dead weight, and wire the speakers directly to your harness extension. Most aftermarket stuff tends to stick to the same meanings of wire colors, so the left rear speaker goes to the green wire (+) and green/black stripe wire (-), and right rear goes to the purple (+) and purple/black stripe (-). I used about 10 feet of each color wire and the plastic conduit plus two pairs of 4 pin weathertight connectors to build the sub-harness, routing it from the radio back into the center console then up the right rear of the parcel shelf and out of the hole in the carpet to mimic how the window defroster harness is on the left side. Note that if the speakers are Bose, you'll need to replace them first as their impedance is too high to use without the pre-amp. I don't know if keeping the pre-amp will work with a non-Bose radio.

Very nice, I wanted headrest speakers but finding a set of tan leather NA seats with them in good shape is getting quite difficult, and the internal seat frame changed for NBs and became too narrow to install two speakers side by side in. On this topic, it's worth tearing into yours and making sure they're all wired in phase with each other (positive and negatives all matching, not having any with the pos and neg reversed). Apparently it's somewhat common for them to have been wired incorrectly and not have all of them in phase with each other, causing weird or off sound quality.

There were rumours of a mild hybrid but apparently that plan has been scrapped. >Just out of curiosity, how did you route the wires to the trunk?
All you have to do is:
1. take the centre console off
2. remove some of the carpetting behind one of the seats (I went right RHD driver side seat), there's a sort of hole or gap where you can easily feed wires to the the back of the care
3. remove the plastic in the boot/trunk so you can better access the aforementioned gap and also to connect the wires to where they need to go (one to reverse light, other to the camera itself)
Depending on what reverse camera you use, you might not even need to drill a hole as the area behind the rear number plate has some gaps. My camera is a part of a number plate holder, so there was no drilling required.
As for why I did all this, it's because when I was installing the head unit I thought I might as well also make use of its functionality with a reverse camera... plus it impresses people seeing such an old car with this thing.

Why bother with a reroute on what looks like a bone stock 150k mile engine?
>>
>>27687151
bone stock with 130k thank you very much. easy answer: autism, as the front mount thermostat just hurts my mechanical sympathy given that means poor flow to the rear of the engine so the rear two cylinders run measurably hotter. more complicated answer: I live in a very hot climate and last summer I'd have the temperature creep up a little (verified in scan tool data and with an IR gun, not just trusting the gauge) if I idled long enough despite everything checking out in my cooling system. new water pump and radiator, plastic under tray in place, bled the system as well as possible with the specialty funnel, passes a block test (no combustion gases present in the cooling system), and the fans work great. so far so good after the reroute, especially as the new thermostat housing added a proper bleeder screw to make bleeding easier both now and in the future if I open the cooling system again.

That's a Sport trim. I had one that got totaled before I moved up to a Club. It's cheap but the added cost of the Club is worth it. You'll spend way more trying to make up for it with aftermarket upgrades.

>Open differential
less fun. Less control in a slide or low traction situation. One wheel peel.

>No Bilstein shocks
You are going to get a lot of body roll. Makes the handling sloppy and more numb.

>Base interior.
No body colored door panels. Cloth seats okay but felt cheap.

>No strut tower brace
Lower rigidity but those are cheap and easy to install

>16" wheels
This is a big problem. The selection of decent summer tires in that size is really limited. I ended up buying 17" wheels like the club came with and that will be pricy if you want to keep them light.

dropping the transmission is easy. doing all the wiring isn’t nearly as straightforward (just assuming here, never actually done this myself) that— and you may run into clearance issues as i’m not totally sure if the autos and manuals had different sized tranny tunnels. all in all, not really worth the hassle unless you have a LOAD of time on your hands and are way too obsessed with your car.

Camera for the front chassis is probably a good idea, as you say. Could also maybe shove it down the rain gutters in the back to see the inside of the sills. Think there was an o ring on the back of the engine's head that tends to leal oik, but not sure if that's an NB issue. Rain rails along the back like to rot too, and the battery tray is also another good place to look. You might also see dents from the battery hitting the inside of the body where it hasnt been tied down properly.

If you just want a small convertible to drive in the city it may make sense for you. Everybody recommends the manual though, because the connection you get with the car is best experienced in manual. Don't convert if you decide you want manual later. Sell the auto and buy a different one instead.

coolant reroutes are pointless on all early model miatas. the BLOCK/HEAD needs to modified to solve the cooling issue you guys are trying to fix. if any of you reading this are considering a coolant reroute, don’t bother. you are wasting your time. all of it.

Drive slow, wind speed and air temp matter, and if you REALLY want to increase mileage then you can draft behind a semi, but you'll eat rocks so I don't recommend it at all. Rather pay the extra fuel for clean air. But as you can see in that pic I was going just over 65mph which is super slow. The MX5 gearbox is setup for performance not cruising/economy so it's always really wound up at highway speeds which means trash fuel economy unfortunately, unless you just accept going slowly. Honestly going fast on the highway is the ticket bait because cops camp there. I cruise slow on the highway and then go fast in rural valley roads- no cops and if I do get a ticket at least it was while I was really having fun.
>>27688967
Nice NC, looking good brother.
>>
>>27690716
That's pretty high mileage even from an interior wear perspective. Best case scenario someone was using it to commute 100 miles daily on the highway and the car has very little actual wear... but that's best case. If you really want it go look. Drivetrain is highly reliable and cheap to replace if the worst happens, so I wouldn't write it off if you can't afford anything else, but make sure the value is there.
>>
>>27690737
Is it due to reliability or muh performance?
>>27690769
My thoughts too, but everything is unaffordable right now and that price is the lowest I've seen yet on a NC2. A coworker was telling me how he had a NB FL for a while and he paid like 4k tops not even ten years ago. Shits fucked man.
>>
>>27690802
>Shits fucked man.
It absolutely is. I got my NC2 before the end times so I really, really lucked out. Prices are insane now. But that's the whole used car market. Shit is like ten years and 60,000 miles and $2000 below MSRP lol. It appears to be correcting now though, at least starting to. This summer rebates are coming back, new inventory is up, so that should put pressure back on used market. But historically for most cars 3-5 years old meant about 50% reduction in price. Hopefully those days return.

Reason I prefer to tap up the lips rather than rolling is to prevent pic related mismatch of fender and bumper, which I find unattractive. Once owners go this far it's a stanced car for life. They can't go back. On my car I had to grind away some of bumper join area inside for clearance.

Performance is significantly worse than an LS for only marginal cost savings.

>>27698846
Only if the car is running
>>
>>27698865
>performance is significantly worse
I don't know how much I agree with that. For one, the fully dressed all aluminum LFX weighs the same 400 poundsas the iron block BP it replaces, so it keeps the same balance while also not needing as strong of a transmission, driveshaft, diff, and axles to handle the torque, so you save weight there too. An aluminum block LS alone adds 100 pounds to the front end, before you get to everything else to bolt it in, hook it up, and strengthen the noodle chassis to handle the torque. LS swapped miatas are nearly always traction limited because there's only so much tire you can cram into the tiny wheel wells, so the extra power out of the box is harder to make usable. You might have noticed a lot of LS swapped miatas go up for sale relatively soon after completion. They lose the "easy to drive at the limit" quality of the stock Miata, ironically becoming less fun to drive as it's a chore to wrangle a high power, low weight, short wheelbase car around. Think Shelby Cobra and their widowmaker reputation. Another point: an LFX swapped one is currently the fastest Miata around the Nürburgring at a 7:33.8, breathing right down the neck of the 2009 GT-R.

>>
>>27698965
I first have to apologise because I didn't really read your blog post (which I don't mean in a snarky or mean way, it's just that I'm too lazy to), but I just skimmed over it. That being said, I'm ignoring anything regarding balance or traction or whatever. The LS just realistically provides more power per $, which is the only reason why you shouldn't consider an LFX swap. I personally believe that a V6 suits the "spirit" of an MX5 better than a meaty V8, but the numbers can't be ignored, and the LS is realistically the better bang for buck choice over an LFX.

>>
>>27701626
Horsepower doesn't kill internals, torque does.
I've got a friend with a small turbo NB that makes a boatload of torque down end (360nm) but winds out before it reaches 6K rpm, he makes less power than me and puts more strain on his block. He is way faster if we're both at low revs, but I've got way more potential if I keep it close to redline.

Stock NB blocks can handle around 330-340NM before you're going into rod bend territory, with the way my engine is set up that's well over 300hp
>>
>>27701660
I'm aware of that, but considering there is very little mention of torque elsewhere I figure that whatever NM you can *roughly* make with 250hp would be the limit, hence why that's the number and unit pushed around. Either way, 'grats.

I have a theory about the 124. I think the 124 was entirely designed by Mazda as an ND, and it is a much newer design than the ND we got. I think the ND is a slightly re-jigged version of what they wanted the NC to be before they knew that it had to be built on the RX-8 platform, hence it having the old smiley company face instead of the current one. I think I saw what looked like an ND in a lineup of alternative NC design models somewhere.

Yeah the prices are borked. I like the little things; but I can get a Camaro SS for less than the same year Miata and its hard to fathom making that choice. At this point Miatas are a better deal new.

anyone else had their NB's AC disengage the compressor and start blowing warm air after about 5-10 minutes of idling at a standstill, then not kick back on for a few minutes? I know the refrigerant charge is correct, and I've already tried swapping the high pressure cutoff switch with my other miat, didn't fix it. it doesn't do it if I'm moving, it'll blow cold forever on a long trip. both fans work, but maybe one or both are weak and heat soaking the condenser?

Do people really do this?
I like my hardtop (and was lucky to find it in the same Mica Green) but I still take it off occasionally.
>>
>>27712587
I'm pretty sure this was developed mainly for racing in events where a hardtop is mandatory, but it really wouldn't surprise me if people actually used them for their street driven daily.
>>
>>27712587

I use the jass brackets and I've never taken my hard top off. I can't be fucked and I don't like summer.

Chain shops probably won't, it's generally against policy to let used tires leave as the liability is too great, they don't want to be litigated against when that used tire pops. I'd look for a mom and pop tire shop instead.
>>27712592
Those are also good to help prevent your hardtop from being stolen, especially as NA/NB hardtops are getting to where they cost a significant portion of what the car is worth in the first place now.
>>
Anyone know what's the shortest quick release I can get for the standard Mk1 MOMO wheel? (6x70mm PCD) Ideally I don't want the wheel to be any closer to me as it's perfect, but pretty much every release I can find mounts to the wheel boss and not the hub itself, which would move it 60mm closer to my body.
>>
>>27711449
Not Sill actually. I think I knew someone with an NDRF named Yukiko amusingly.
>>
>>27712587
Yes I run the Jass brackets with theft proof fasteners. Taken the hardtop off a couple of times, but I don't have a soft top fitted.

>>
>>27712531
NC miata with power retractable hardtop? I hate the rag top too, the NC seems like the best option, and not as expensive as the gt/gr86.
>>
What do you guys do to prevent rust apart from only driving in the summer?
>>
>>27714387
On the NA and NB having a hardtop on prevents possible leaks around the rain rail and drainage holes which can rust out the metal on (under?) your parcel shelf, apart from that I don't think you can do much. Mine was always in above average condition in terms of rust, but it still had rotten frame rails where the front suspension is mounted, I had to get new pieces of metal welded there.

Hager Ty might be pulling this out of their ass but

> Now, with the past out of the way, let’s end with the future. The next-gen Miata is slated for 2026. It will likely have a hybrid powertrain. What the whole package looks like and how it will be received by the MX-5’s legions of fans isn’t yet clear. What is clear, however, is that the ND3 is one of those “last of” cars. The Miata formula of basic, naturally aspirated four-banger, driving the rear wheels through a stubby manual ends with this car. Inevitably, snobs will call it the last “real” Miata. Good thing it’s the best one, too.
>>
>>27714718
How long did it take to install?
>>
>>27715846
I did some other unrelated work to it at the same time, so it's a bit hard to say, but I'd say probably 3 hours of it were spent on the reroute. I did take my sweet time making sure everything was just right and cleaning the sealing surfaces as well as possible though, it could definitely be done faster if you wanted to.
>>
Should I mid life crisis one of these as my only car? Im coming off an 07 accord and have around 25k to spend on my next car. I keep cycling between like a more practical honda SI, then to a brz because fuck money, then I look at these little impractical fucks and wonder if I should just yolo everything and make a bad decision. No kids or wife and that wont change so my biggest concern is the complete lack of trunk space and they are probably death machines with everyone driving fat Truggs and SUVs these days.
>>
>>27715978
They're less impractical than you think. I can fit 2 weeks of groceries for two in my NB just fine and even do costco trips in it sometimes. They hold their value pretty well too, so if you decide it's not for you then you probably won't even be out any money if you sell it.

Good cars are decreasingly available and if you buy to keep for life (I do, it pays off) paying a little extra means nothing over the life of the vehicle.

Plan for the long war and get the best vehicle you can to begin with. 1500 bucks is couch money in 2023 dollars and this math may help. If you overpay by 1500 that's only 500 bucks/year over the next three years i.e. not shit.

You only need one car so getting the right one is wise. Study exhaustively, accumulate factory spares before they get rare (know what common wear parts the aftermarket doesn't do well are).
Get at least one spare computer and spare electrical modules. Part of how I easily afford a stupidly large vehicle (mostly motorbikes and trucks) fleet is planning support as I would for a commercial fleet.

Good simple vehicles are worth paying for. I've been wrenching since the late 1970s and if I like a vehicle 1500 wouldn't stop me. I used to be cheap like that and found out starting cheap then fixing problems costs more.
>>
>>27720170
Usually means they'll get it MOT'd when you buy it. Also usually means the MOT they get is a hooky one, but meh.
>>
>>27720212
I don't trust that the previous owner/s did anywhere near the work in the advisories over the past few years given how few miles its done during that time. 71k miles is pretty good, but I expect shit has gone bad for sitting still for so long.
>>
>>27720214
I do agree, but tbf you can say that about any low-ish mileage car, or any car without a mountain of receipts and documentation. Buying a used car is always a gamble.

>hard or soft top
I'd choose the softie as I have a garage, there's no snow here and it's a low crime area. Also you get more resonance with the top down on the targa top, but it's quieter with the top up. Choose to suit your lifestyle.
>>
>>27721911
We do get quite a bit of snow here, but I'm guessing that's just an issue if the car is parked outside, right? And even if, you can protect it.

anon is angry because we love driving so much when we have less than 200hp. He is unable to comprehend how happy we are.

He's probably locked in the endless cycle of getting more power and getting bored of it, but more is beyond his budget. Or he simply can't use the power he has because he only commutes in gridlock traffic.

Seeing a miata drive by smiling is a spit in the face of his suffering.

oof that's a high price for 200km. I put the text in a machine translator and the seller says there's a lot of new parts on it though, and I think "minimal" rust (which is probably still too much rust.
Shame he seems to be unwilling to move on the price.
>>
I don't understand some prices, the 2024 MX-5 is sold for 40k, while the 2023 for 31k. Slight difference in equipment (2024 is the premium model - different seats and brakes), is the 2024 the better one? Germany btw, both new.
>>
>>27723240
Check if it actually has a torsen diff, 02 is the last MY with them.
03+ Has Fuji diffs which can fail catastrophically. Still a LSD though.
8.5K is a bit high but if it's immaculate then it's an okay price.

Walk if it has any rust on the arches or sills. I bought an exact model like this with minor arch rust for 4950 2 years ago, which ended up having quite a bit more rust hidden underneath. Pic rel, the speck at the wheel well was the only exterior rust it had.

Do all soft tops leak a little? Like even when these cars were new?
>>
>>27727315
My NB has a few small tears at the edges and I didn't notice any leaks, although that said I still didn't like that and I found a hardtop as soon as I could.
Other than massive gashes anywhere away from the edges, I'm not sure if leaking soft tops are the main concern with those - it's more that loads of people left their soft tops parked outside all day and its tiny drainage holes get overwhelmed over the years by rain and dirt blockages.
>>
>>27727315
All convertible cars involve a rain gutter that is like 95% capable of keeping large amounts of water out. Even in heavy rains it's just not that much water that it's gotta channel. All convertibles let in moisture, it's just how the design works.
