2002 NB with rear camera and touchscreen editionhow can you let this thread die
>>27676183who else here /rerouted/
>>27676183is it possible to be too short for a miata
>>27676183Get an OEM windblocker for it if you drive with the top down frequently. It really helps with wind buffeting and noise above about 30 mph. There are two versions for the NB, the early one that has the larger flap to allow easier parcel shelf access, and the later 04-05 one (at least in the states, not sure about UK availability since you guys got a million different special edition NB2s) which has a smaller flap to make room for a couple speakers which is nice as no NBs had headrest speakers.
>>27676732I was thinking of getting one with in-built speakers, as someone else here mentioned they found one (in the right colour for their interior). But wiring up the speakers doesn't sound simple.I've seen a bunch of windblockers available here.
>>27676750Lol that was me, and it's out for delivery right now actually. If you have an aftermarket radio already, its pigtail should already have the 4 rear speaker wires ready to go. It's just a matter of running 4 wires through the center console and up to the parcel shelf, then bypassing the Bose pre-amp (if the windblocker is Bose and your Miata is not). I'm building a sub-harness for it with connectors on either end to be all fancy (and so I can unplug it at either end without needing to pull the wiring too), but that is going a bit above and beyond. https://youtu.be/z7UZpQ3AcAI
>>27676798I have aftermarket head unit so maybe the wiring diagram is what I need.pls take photos of your windblocker installation.
>>27676183why do miatas rust so much? people rave out miata always being the answer but the rust problems are embarrassing
>>276769141. Shit owners who don't do any maintenance.2. the drainage holes are particularly at risk of getting blocked by dirt, trapping water inside, rusting the car out from the inside. That's easily solved using a trumpet cleaner, but see #1.
>>27676914Not my problem
Bros what's the best thing to do as a poorfag. Paint or wrap?
>>27676980depends how much you (dont) wanna spend£50 worth of montana graffiti paint did me fine(ignore the top it was cheap and i didnt get round to painting it)
>>27676980A nice paint job is leagues better than a nice wrap, but I think a cheap paint job looks leagues worse than a cheap wrap. A wrap's issues mainly come from simple stuff like shitty cuts and poor application, whereas far more can go wrong with a cheap paintjob, and things like overspray and shitty prep can just ruin a car; If the wrap ends up shit, you can just just peel it off with little to no consequence.
>>27676914See >>27676921, but they also have virtually no rust proofing from factory, just like most other Japanese cars of the era.
>>27676693You'd have to be basically a child.
>>27677072Doesn't look bad, issue is someone already used graffiti paint on my car and now it looks like shit.>>27677106I would be doing the wrap myself. The plan right now is to either prep the car myself and get a cheap paint job, or prep the car and then wrap myself.
>>27677282Then I'd go with the wrap for the reasons I previously listed. Far less to go wrong, and even if you do fuck it up you won't ruin your car.
had to do a little business trip to the city this week.lots or karens and pajeets tried to murder me there on the road. Honestly, I feel much safer around the rural truckholds.Next time, I'll take the train.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU4pQLuBhbocan the NB coupé hurt me?
>>27678551>can the NB coupé hurt me?It could. They're pretty much unobtainium now, so if you broke the back window, for instance, you'd find getting a replacement close to impossible.
>>27678793I really hate that half of the already-limited-to-172-units NB coupes have that dogshit plastic shit glued on the head and tail lights and horrible awful dogshit bumpers. With their rarity, would it be sacrilege to convert one back to a proper, normal NB2 front end, or sacrilege to leave it because you can't even fucking look at it it's so ugly?
>>27678819Swapping the bumper won't hurt it. I prefer the base bumper too.
>>27678828Here's a better one
>>27676880Got it installed yesterday, god damn it makes a huge difference for the sound system. I never want to go back to just two door speakers in a Miata again. It was exactly as easy as I thought it was going to be. The radio's pigtail had its 4 wires for the rear unused, so you basically just extend them towards the right rear side of the parcel shelf. For the windblocker side, the Bose pre-amp inside has two pairs of red and green wires (positive and negative for each speaker, respectively). Snip those off the 8 pin molex connector on the pre-amp, unbolt the pre-amp since it's just dead weight, and wire the speakers directly to your harness extension. Most aftermarket stuff tends to stick to the same meanings of wire colors, so the left rear speaker goes to the green wire (+) and green/black stripe wire (-), and right rear goes to the purple (+) and purple/black stripe (-). I used about 10 feet of each color wire and the plastic conduit plus two pairs of 4 pin weathertight connectors to build the sub-harness, routing it from the radio back into the center console then up the right rear of the parcel shelf and out of the hole in the carpet to mimic how the window defroster harness is on the left side. Note that if the speakers are Bose, you'll need to replace them first as their impedance is too high to use without the pre-amp. I don't know if keeping the pre-amp will work with a non-Bose radio.
>>27678882
>>27678884
>>27678886
I really want these tail lights but I hate that they look like clear ebay garbage when they're off
>>27679357
>>27678882nice job and thanks for sharing the other photos. I checked where you've screwed itt in and I can see there's a plastic bolt thing that's occupying the space atm. I'm still unsure about the wiring but at the very least I could keep one installed and work out the electrics over time.

Started hanging out in the slow lane to keep RPM down I accidentally realized how much fuel it saves. NC chads use 87 octane (R+M) /2 by the way. It's safe for the engine. AAA tested it.
>>27678882>it makes a huge difference for the sound systemWell done, nice write up. I've got the headrest speakers in my NA6, which also fill out the sound nicely.
>>27680215We just chilling. Used to look at the clownshoe and think that wrapping the rear glass to make it a sports van would be funny. I'm not sure now I've shitshopped it. What do you think?
>>27678819They don't look like NB2 headlights.
>>27680495Not the worst thing in the world, but the glass makes it look lighter. That you can see there's nothing back there tells you how little weight is on the rear tires and so how tail-happy it is.
>>27679357What are they? I like them. I'd want to see more pics of them off thoughever because they don't look like cheap ebay shit so far
>>27680627https://emiitautogarage.com/products/infinity-mirror-tail-lights-for-mazda-miata-nb-98-5On further research, they have tinted ones which look less worse while off but I still would prefer red lenses like stock
>>27680665You can use a heat gun to melt the glue that holds the lenses on. Swap clear lenses for stock ones.
>>27680665Thanks man. I like the clear look but I have black paint so it has a contrast going for it. I think with darker paint it would look nicer than a lighter paint.
>>27680718Not sure how well that will work with the brake and turn signals swapping locations between that aftermarket light and the stock NB2 lights
>>27680730In that case, I thick you should stick with stock lights, maybe just upgrade the globes
>>27680469Very nice, I wanted headrest speakers but finding a set of tan leather NA seats with them in good shape is getting quite difficult, and the internal seat frame changed for NBs and became too narrow to install two speakers side by side in. On this topic, it's worth tearing into yours and making sure they're all wired in phase with each other (positive and negatives all matching, not having any with the pos and neg reversed). Apparently it's somewhat common for them to have been wired incorrectly and not have all of them in phase with each other, causing weird or off sound quality. https://ca.kef.com/blogs/news/diagnosing-and-avoiding-speaker-phase-issues
>>27680959>finding a set of tan leather NA seats with them in good shape is getting quite difficultkek, previous owner had the ones in my NA completely reupholstered and new speakers put in them, and I've just pulled them out to replace them with bucket seats. No idea what I'm going to do with them, though.
>>27680959Read the Kef blog and decided to leave mine as it's too hard. Mine has factory head unit and wiring. Remember marking the wires when I replaced the speakers with the Clearwater kit

>>27682352lolwut? this is a new thing that just started the other day. it’s not consistent either. i’d rather avoid it from happening while i’m on the highway so it’s staying off for now.
>>27682316>Is he overreacting?Probably. If it was a dry day and you didn't get the undercarriage wet, then I see no reason as to why you'd need to wash it down. Wouldn't hurt, mind you, but rather unnecessary.
>>27682345Either your AC/power steering belt is massively too tight, the system is way overcharged, or your compressor is about to shit itself. When are they going to come out with a hybrid Miata? They already have autos so it's not much of a stretch to throw in a small battery to the back or something.
>>27683102They're going to make the ND last as long as possible. There may well never be another Miata after it's discontinued. Batteries are too heavy and they've been looking into shit like supercapacitors, but I don't think that will bear much fruit.
>>27676690Yes
>>27683102There were rumours of a mild hybrid but apparently that plan has been scrapped. Miata probably doesn’t sell enough for them to take the new i6 hybrid tech and apply it, the co2 mitigation would be negligible and then they would have to adapt it to a manual trans. Dunno how hard that is but the i6 seems complicated as fuck
once the EV fad has worn off, the NE will be announced as a pure ICE roadster.

>>27676183I have an android head unit but I never bothered to get a backup cam since I don't need it and it didn't come in the package with the head unit itself. Just out of curiosity, how did you route the wires to the trunk?
>>27683707>Just out of curiosity, how did you route the wires to the trunk? All you have to do is:1. take the centre console off2. remove some of the carpetting behind one of the seats (I went right RHD driver side seat), there's a sort of hole or gap where you can easily feed wires to the the back of the care3. remove the plastic in the boot/trunk so you can better access the aforementioned gap and also to connect the wires to where they need to go (one to reverse light, other to the camera itself)Depending on what reverse camera you use, you might not even need to drill a hole as the area behind the rear number plate has some gaps. My camera is a part of a number plate holder, so there was no drilling required. As for why I did all this, it's because when I was installing the head unit I thought I might as well also make use of its functionality with a reverse camera... plus it impresses people seeing such an old car with this thing.
>>27683512No hybrid shit? Great news! Where did you find out it was scrapped?
>>27683513God I hope so.
>>27682755NA? Don't like to roll, use soft hammers to beat up the lip so it doesn't pull the fender. Heat gun to soften the paint first. On the front I used a heat gun to reshape (flatten) the plastic liner near the clips, tucked it behind the clip tabs and cable tied it on.
>>27676690I've spent way too much time in this part of the engine bay.
>>27683684>If you live anywhere corrosion is a problem, the entire underside of every car is orange, not just the water traps.FTFY
>>27683795i have an NC but i'd think it would be similar. that's surprising. i would have though hammer would have a bigger chance of causing ripples in the fender than rolling. i don't mind if the fender pulls slightly, not so much you'd notice.does the liner bend well enough to just cable tie it or do you have to start cutting it up a bit to fit?

>>27676690Why bother with a reroute on what looks like a bone stock 150k mile engine?
>>27687151bone stock with 130k thank you very much. easy answer: autism, as the front mount thermostat just hurts my mechanical sympathy given that means poor flow to the rear of the engine so the rear two cylinders run measurably hotter. more complicated answer: I live in a very hot climate and last summer I'd have the temperature creep up a little (verified in scan tool data and with an IR gun, not just trusting the gauge) if I idled long enough despite everything checking out in my cooling system. new water pump and radiator, plastic under tray in place, bled the system as well as possible with the specialty funnel, passes a block test (no combustion gases present in the cooling system), and the fans work great. so far so good after the reroute, especially as the new thermostat housing added a proper bleeder screw to make bleeding easier both now and in the future if I open the cooling system again.

>>27677573For me when they replaced my bumper and grille (my own fault and they had a tow hook), they also repainted parts of the fenders and hood to transition it nicely. I don't notice the work from a distance, but up close, you can see they kinda fucked up some of the edges. At least I have thicker paint now, more resistant to rock chips.

I'm really tempted to buy a NBwhat should I look for ? I read that rust is the main problem of those version and that I should buy a borescope to inspect the front frame rails ? any tips ? have around 6k€ budget
Tuckin' 99 seat rails ready to go in the NA. VERY tight fit on the seat, but luckily it does just barely squeeze in.>>27689677>what should I look for ?Camera for the front chassis is probably a good idea, as you say. Could also maybe shove it down the rain gutters in the back to see the inside of the sills. Think there was an o ring on the back of the engine's head that tends to leal oik, but not sure if that's an NB issue. Rain rails along the back like to rot too, and the battery tray is also another good place to look. You might also see dents from the battery hitting the inside of the body where it hasnt been tied down properly.
>>27688614If you just want a small convertible to drive in the city it may make sense for you. >>27685508Drive slow, wind speed and air temp matter, and if you REALLY want to increase mileage then you can draft behind a semi, but you'll eat rocks so I don't recommend it at all. Rather pay the extra fuel for clean air. But as you can see in that pic I was going just over 65mph which is super slow. The MX5 gearbox is setup for performance not cruising/economy so it's always really wound up at highway speeds which means trash fuel economy unfortunately, unless you just accept going slowly. Honestly going fast on the highway is the ticket bait because cops camp there. I cruise slow on the highway and then go fast in rural valley roads- no cops and if I do get a ticket at least it was while I was really having fun. >>27688967Nice NC, looking good brother.
>>27690716That's pretty high mileage even from an interior wear perspective. Best case scenario someone was using it to commute 100 miles daily on the highway and the car has very little actual wear... but that's best case. If you really want it go look. Drivetrain is highly reliable and cheap to replace if the worst happens, so I wouldn't write it off if you can't afford anything else, but make sure the value is there.
>>27690737Is it due to reliability or muh performance?>>27690769My thoughts too, but everything is unaffordable right now and that price is the lowest I've seen yet on a NC2. A coworker was telling me how he had a NB FL for a while and he paid like 4k tops not even ten years ago. Shits fucked man.
>>27690802>Shits fucked man.It absolutely is. I got my NC2 before the end times so I really, really lucked out. Prices are insane now. But that's the whole used car market. Shit is like ten years and 60,000 miles and $2000 below MSRP lol. It appears to be correcting now though, at least starting to. This summer rebates are coming back, new inventory is up, so that should put pressure back on used market. But historically for most cars 3-5 years old meant about 50% reduction in price. Hopefully those days return.

>>27685196i had enkei rims that i had held onto for over a decade from my other car. i can replace my stock rims with these, which i think looks a bit nicer, but the offset will push the tires out a bit which is why i'm looking to fender roll, just in case. i'd actually like to get rpf1s later which would definately rub.>>27691908the goofy smile on the NC2 & NC3s ruin it though. there's no good option out of it either. image how great it would like with something like the ND grille.

>>27695516Dope, well done bro. You running forged internals?>>27697375Performance is significantly worse than an LS for only marginal cost savings.>>27698846Only if the car is running
>>27698865>performance is significantly worseI don't know how much I agree with that. For one, the fully dressed all aluminum LFX weighs the same 400 poundsas the iron block BP it replaces, so it keeps the same balance while also not needing as strong of a transmission, driveshaft, diff, and axles to handle the torque, so you save weight there too. An aluminum block LS alone adds 100 pounds to the front end, before you get to everything else to bolt it in, hook it up, and strengthen the noodle chassis to handle the torque. LS swapped miatas are nearly always traction limited because there's only so much tire you can cram into the tiny wheel wells, so the extra power out of the box is harder to make usable. You might have noticed a lot of LS swapped miatas go up for sale relatively soon after completion. They lose the "easy to drive at the limit" quality of the stock Miata, ironically becoming less fun to drive as it's a chore to wrangle a high power, low weight, short wheelbase car around. Think Shelby Cobra and their widowmaker reputation. Another point: an LFX swapped one is currently the fastest Miata around the Nürburgring at a 7:33.8, breathing right down the neck of the 2009 GT-R. https://youtu.be/eiJ8pLIZnJs
>>27698965I first have to apologise because I didn't really read your blog post (which I don't mean in a snarky or mean way, it's just that I'm too lazy to), but I just skimmed over it. That being said, I'm ignoring anything regarding balance or traction or whatever. The LS just realistically provides more power per $, which is the only reason why you shouldn't consider an LFX swap. I personally believe that a V6 suits the "spirit" of an MX5 better than a meaty V8, but the numbers can't be ignored, and the LS is realistically the better bang for buck choice over an LFX.

>>27700290>Stock internalsColour me surprised, I thought the internals were only good for around 250hp.>I don't have a gopro to film the speedo sorry.picrel
>>27701626Horsepower doesn't kill internals, torque does.I've got a friend with a small turbo NB that makes a boatload of torque down end (360nm) but winds out before it reaches 6K rpm, he makes less power than me and puts more strain on his block. He is way faster if we're both at low revs, but I've got way more potential if I keep it close to redline.Stock NB blocks can handle around 330-340NM before you're going into rod bend territory, with the way my engine is set up that's well over 300hp
>>27701660I'm aware of that, but considering there is very little mention of torque elsewhere I figure that whatever NM you can *roughly* make with 250hp would be the limit, hence why that's the number and unit pushed around. Either way, 'grats.

>>27704129I have a theory about the 124. I think the 124 was entirely designed by Mazda as an ND, and it is a much newer design than the ND we got. I think the ND is a slightly re-jigged version of what they wanted the NC to be before they knew that it had to be built on the RX-8 platform, hence it having the old smiley company face instead of the current one. I think I saw what looked like an ND in a lineup of alternative NC design models somewhere.

anyone else had their NB's AC disengage the compressor and start blowing warm air after about 5-10 minutes of idling at a standstill, then not kick back on for a few minutes? Hager Ty might be pulling this out of their ass but> Now, with the past out of the way, let’s end with the future. The next-gen Miata is slated for 2026. It will likely have a hybrid powertrain. What the whole package looks like and how it will be received by the MX-5’s legions of fans isn’t yet clear. What is clear, however, is that the ND3 is one of those “last of” cars. The Miata formula of basic, naturally aspirated four-banger, driving the rear wheels through a stubby manual ends with this car. Inevitably, snobs will call it the last “real” Miata. Good thing it’s the best one, too.
>>27714718How long did it take to install?
>>27715846I did some other unrelated work to it at the same time, so it's a bit hard to say, but I'd say probably 3 hours of it were spent on the reroute. I did take my sweet time making sure everything was just right and cleaning the sealing surfaces as well as possible though, it could definitely be done faster if you wanted to.
Should I mid life crisis one of these as my only car? Im coming off an 07 accord and have around 25k to spend on my next car. I keep cycling between like a more practical honda SI, then to a brz because fuck money, then I look at these little impractical fucks and wonder if I should just yolo everything and make a bad decision. If you overpay by 1500 that's only 500 bucks/year over the next three years i.e. not shit. You only need one car so getting the right one is wise. Study exhaustively, accumulate factory spares before they get rare (know what common wear parts the aftermarket doesn't do well are).Get at least one spare computer and spare electrical modules. Part of how I easily afford a stupidly large vehicle (mostly motorbikes and trucks) fleet is planning support as I would for a commercial fleet. Good simple vehicles are worth paying for.
