Why (some?) people hype much about this dead car brand? Objectively, their cars were not anything special i.e. turbo, weird shape, safety, etc.

I'm looking at a used '09 9-3 with a 6spd rn being sold by a family friend. It needs like 2k worth of work, but I can get it for 1.5k. Cosmetic condition is pretty rough but it hasn't been wrecked. I just need a beater that works. How reliable are the 2.0t engines?

The engine themselves are pretty good, but cooling system is pretty shit, they leak oil like crazy, and ECU tends to fail
>>
>>27773807
I don't think you know what that phrase means.
>>
>>27773977
Thanks, I know this one does need an ECU according to the saab mechanic who inspected it which I factored into my offer price. Maybe I'll start at a grand and offer 1500 max, but I also don't want to lowball a family friend too hard.
>>
>>27773977
Burning/leaking oil seems to be a common story with these. If you do somehow get a Saab that doesn't consume oil like a two stroke, it might make a pretty cool project car.
>>
>>27774360
>>27773977
I did a bunch of research about second gen 9-3's and I totally agree that the ECU seems to be a common issue but I haven't found too much info about them being prone to oil-leaks. Are there any areas that commonly fail that I should look out for?

Why does Tesla manage to pull it off while Saab and Citroen can not?
>>
>>27774969
Teslas are white coffins with four washing machine motors motivating the wheels. They have some """quirky""" gimmicks in the software. Saabs and Citroens were engineered quirkily, and even the general public could see this.

Incidentally, both those marques hit trouble when they were forced by their parent companies to go more conventional and cut development costs, losing their USP in the process. Really makes u think.

Brake vacuum pump almost always leaks, look at the top of the transmission, if theres a pool of oil in one of the pockets there its 90% chance its the brake vacuum pump.
Oil level sensor leaks often as well and the sump needs to be pulled off for the seal to be replaced aswell.
I've seen the valve cover leak into the spark plug wells pretty often aswell, killing ignition coils.

When the oil level sensor and vacuum pump leak they do leak really badly so it's not something you can really just ignore. Oil level sensor is definitely the most annoying to change.

If you do get a 9-3 change this piece of shit as soon as possible aswell because this cheap crap always breaks and leaks coolant

saab and citroen weren't making vehicles shoved by the govt into our faces
>>
>>27775397
GM just didn't give a toss about Saab and treated it the same way they did Saturn. Lazy unimaginative murrican executive mindset trading USP for short term profit. Citroen on the other hand, I have read PSA management actively sabotaged them over many years to shore up the golden goose Peugeot
>>
>>27775786
Hey maybe if they were so amazing they should’ve gone private after the Saab-Scania split… but noooo they just had to get them some Govt Motors money. Fuck em.
The cars were quirky and one of the first brands to clearly link with certain types of people (liberal arts college professors, that weird single engineer guy down the street, broke ass negros who found it at a bhph lot)

Saab were teetering on the edge of insolvency for over a decade before the GM buyout. It unironically saved them and gave them another 15 years of life.

And for the record, classic Saabs were unreliable turds that only hippies liked.

i daily an 8v c900 turbo and i like it because it looks cool and it has soul + character, it's not much deeper than that. i also have a modern 911 turbo and honestly have more fun in the c900 most of the time. any """muh saab story!! kek!""" you hear about saabs made after the 90s don't count because those were just soulless badge engineered gms.

There should be no rattling plastic in a OG 9-5 or 9-3. There is none in my car. It has less creaks and rattles than my friends E39, porsche cayenne and 90s E classe

I love specifically the dumb saab clones, I have a 92x aero (rebadged subaru WRX).. am also thinking about purchasing a 97x aero (rebadged Trailblazer SS) if I come across one. They badge engineered fun cars at least lol

The funny and sad thing about this is that the NG9-5 (your pic) is pretty much an Opel Insignia. It just looks cool from the outside. Inside you have an Opel steering wheel, GM/Opel engines, GM/Opel drive train.. The previous generation of the 9-5 the OG had Saab engines and Saab gearboxes (if you went with the manual).
>>
>>27779474
Yeah. I grew up with family and friends having the 9000 ,900og/ng and OG 9-3/5 with the real SAAB engines and have never even ridden in a "new" one. In my mind they're just a new version of the cars I know and love.
And yes, I'm aware the 9000 has a lot of Lancia in it and the ng900/9-3 has a lot of Opel, but I find solace in that SAAB made GM seethe by re-engineering basically every Opel-part they had to use.
