My shitbox is approaching 300k miles, transmission is starting to stick, along with other problems that come with age. I've given up on the used car market, and I'm considering doing an engine swap at this point. Thinking about sticking a 1UZ in there, or a 2 UZ if it'll fit.
Anyone have experience with engine swaps? What should I be cautious of?

I have 2 of them anon.
First step is to check if you are actually retarded and just need check ATF levels.
Second step is to pull the ECT fuse and see how it shifts without the computer.
Personally I wouldn't get rid of the 5VZ. Yes I know they detuned it to hell, but that's the reason it still good after 300k miles. It's a good industrial engine.

I never understood the trepidation about mileage on cars. If you swap the engine and transmission out, which admittedly is a big expense, and you do the work yourself, there's no reason you can't drive that fucker indefinitely. Or at least until the undercarriage rusts out.

for the IFS you'll want the LS400 rear front sump oil pan. If using a factory harness, the capacitors in the factory ECU probably need to be replaced.
if going to manual, you'll need the KSRacing bellhousing/flywheel kit from ebay or a plate adapter from someone else. Headers fit across all UZ engines. tundra cheapies off of ebay fit tight against the block, but might need to be modified a little.

If you don't plan on boosting it, you should just use a VVTI engine. more power and wider powerband.

the engine in my jeep was pulled from the junk yard and runs great, came from a Jetta
I got the extended warranty for like 20 bucks extra which means if it's bad you get your money back

I get alerts when cars I want drop, usually the alert comes around 7 or 8am, I'm at the yard before noon, I drop everything I'm doing and immediately grab my tools to be the first one there
I've gotten multiple engines and transmissions this way, if you wait even a day you'll miss it, you need to immediately drop everything and hit the yard without delay
