Want to buy a used truck. I'm thinking F-150 or Ram, but I'm open to anything that can comfortable and safely tow 5kish pounds. I'm just wondering if there are any models or years to avoid, or any that stand out as far as reliability. I live somewhere with snow, so rust is always a concern. Basically, what should I be looking for and what should make me turn 360 degrees and walk away? It's going to have to double as a daily driver and a toy hauler, but my daily commute is pretty short.
>>
They are really not that different, the F-150 is the most common, still really expensive so you need to take out a loan unless you buy it in cash. The dealerships work with banks to finance the vehicles with interest. In this way, you can lease a vehicle with a small cash down payment and a loan agreement.
>>
Get the one with a metal oil pan.

Some ford metal oil pans are one time use
>>
The F150 is a piece of shit.
Get a Silverado and call it a day.

Honestly just go buy new and take advantage of the 0% financing for a 36 month note they have right now.
>>
F150 with 2v 4.6.
>>
>>27829667
i would say, don't compromise on features that you want, you WILL eventually find the combo of whatever features you desire
also, i got the f150 with the 3.5 ecoboost and it has been great BUT i wish i had gotten the 2.7 instead, i only tow a 7000~ lbs trailer occasionally and the 2.7 would have been plenty powerful

Right now honestly if you got money for a down payment buy a new 23 F150. 1.9% finance rate is the best you're going to get if you don't have cash to purchase outright. You'll spend less over the course of the loan if you do that.

Surprised nobody's mentioned this thing yet. Vastly superior to any of its "American" counterparts.

Toyotas are for gay people
>>
>>27829881
You won't get a fair deal on a used Toyota, any Toyota.
>>
>>27829881
These things are even fucking worse than the Hemi's on fuel. Even a short commute will murder your wallet.
>>
>>27829667
Get a hyundai Sante Cruz you faggot. You do not need a full size truck.

These. Both my father and in law started out driving F-150s, loved them but ended up in early 00s Silverados. Oddly they both feel Ford made a better truck pre-new body styles. Either way you can't go wrong with Silverado, Old Ford or 4.6 from 00s. Do a quick Google search and it's very obvious which years to avoid for 4.6/5.4 engines. I have a 93 351v8 that's rated for 5400lbs per owner manual. Would get more if I was in a 250/350, so consider your frame and brake system since same engine will pull it in a heavier frame.
>>
Also Ford obs diesels are pretty cheap if they're not '97+Red. IDI or PSD will maintain fuel economy, 12mpg or so regardless of your load. Loads will have cleared 300k miles tho, but with the right care it'll make it to a million since International built the engine, not Ford.

this but Honda Ridgeline

Ridgeline's are cool, but way too expensive for something that is much less capable than even a Ranger or a Frontier.

I have a 2016 3.5l v6 ecoboost f150 and it’s pretty great. Fast(er), tows well, interior is comfy as fuck, and the 6 speed auto is bulletproof. would recommend. Clean 15-17 examples can be had for less than 20.

>trucks with AWD instead of 4WD
lol just get an suv
>>
>>27830625
>ferd 150
no thanks I need my truck to be reliable
>>
>>27830631
Are F-150's not reliable?
>>
>>27829667
2015-2020 Ford with the 5.0 if you want newer.
99-06 Chevy 5.3 if you're fine with older.
Do not get Dodge if you're concerned about rust, especially older ones.
>>
>>27831292
No they are not
>>
>>27829667
I wouldn't touch a used F-150 because of the retarded owners that ignore maintenance on their high strung engines. The sheer amount of Ecoboost owners that either use non-synthetic oil or overrun their mileage is obscene.

I'd recommend looking into low mileage Ram Classics with the 5.7L. They're the best cost for performance option on the market. You get all the benefits of the new platform while retaining the simplicity of the older interior options. They're fairly spartan workhorse trucks and have the highest reliability rating of the bunch. The 4x4 system on the Ram is also vastly superior to any other company's offerings because, shocker, they share tech with Jeep which is the gold standard for factory performance in inclimate road conditions.

Just don't fucking touch one that has Hemi tick. Check the oil on the dipstick to verify they didn't just dump thick ass oil in there to cover it up.
>>
>>27831315
IDK if "Jeep Tech" is exactly a selling point? They're pretty notorious for wiring gremlins especially in snow/rust prone areas. But I don't much experience with Dodge to say one way or the other.
>>
>>27830022
i thought truckolds didnt care about gas prices?
>>
>>27830631
no you dont, your time is nowhere near valuable enough to need another .1% reliablity
>>
Nissan frontier 6cyl

I have a 2.7L F-150

The only problem I've had with it is the 10 speed auto. Dunno what to do about it, but it shifts rough.
>>
>>27831577
that’s normal for fords.
should’ve gotten a titan
>>
>>27829667
old ram with a cummins engine
>>
>>27831577
try resetting the transmission learning, it shouldn't he shifting rough
>>
>>27829788
I prefer the Sierra. I'm a slob, and leather seats are nice. Same truck as the Chevy, but a little fancier. Won't make a huge difference in used pricing.
>>
>>27829881
I'm a Toyota man thru and thru. Daily drive a 2006 Pontiac Vibe (Corolla engine and transmission). Own a 1995 Toyota Pickup (last year before the Tacoma/Hilux branding. Bulletproof). But for a full-size truck, unless you're made of money, Ford or GM all the way.
>>
>>27831448
These are sleepers, to be sure. You can get them for cheap, as Nissan completely ruined their reputation with their continuously variable transmission problems of the 2010s. The trucks are underrated, and as a result, cheap for what you get.
Be advised! You will look like a faggot driving it.
