Do it right in the first go, perfect from the start.
Look where western "progression" got you now, bloated pigfat turds with subscription based seat heating and grilles larger than the cars of yesterday were.
Meanwhile the Trabant is perfect, Trabant is eternal.

I am really drawn to this car. But import is expensive and model with AC is probably non existent and neither would a rust free one be.

tl;dr communism is beautiful when it steals western designs
>>
>>27831416
Finnish Samaras had AC as an option if memory serves, but they're all of the older boxier model, I don't think we ever got the facelift
>>27831431
Wait? I could give someone a call right now and buy one, but I first want to get my Volga registered and my Urals running, then I might grab either an Izh pickup or a Wartburg
>>
>>27831434
I do wonder if adding a few glasspacks or scrap mufflers into the trabants exhaust make it less insufferably loud on the interior. It would make for a funny toy and winter beater car and it would be exempt from any tax and inspections.

yeah Im pretty sire no 2114 ever left the fa tory with an ac, but there are afermarket kits available
>neither would a rust free one be
they do rust like shit but there is a small number of well-preserved cars, though they cost a lot and you have to be wary of bullshitters who cover up rust with putty
>>
>>27831473
No it wouldn't, it's an extremely cheap beater/city car and a 2 stroke to boot.
2 strokes are always insufferably loud just by design.
What you'd want to add is an expansion chamber in the exhaust, but that only makes it even louder.

"CAPITALISTS could be here" she thought, "I've never been in this microdistrict before. There could be CAPITALISTS anywhere." The cool wind felt good against her bare forearms. "I HATE CAPITALISTS" she thought. State Anthem of the USSR reverberated from the gas station loudspeaker making the car pulsate as the 5 kopeck tea she had to stand 5 hours in line for circulated through her powerful thick veins and washed away her (merited) fear of political extremists after dark. "With a car, you can go almost anywhere in the USSR you want" she said to herself, out loud.

>>

well done
>>
>>27831596
Because I hate poles.
Nah, I just like IZh and Moskviches, in general I'm big into Soviet Russian stuff, Soviet satellite state stuff not so much even if it was better.
Like I prefer IZh bikes over MZ and Jawas even though both of the latter are superior to the IZh, I prefer Makarovs over CZ stuff even though the CZ75 is one of the better 9x19 handguns out there and probably the best handgun the Soviet Union put out on top of those Polish Radoms.
It's just personal preference.

Samara platform is still in production, albeit in a slightly modified form with an ac and simple electric power steering. Honestly, I like this simplicity of a 90s car in a modern form. Especially after the appearance of chink tablets with wheels. Dacia Logan could be something like this, but they are much uglier to begin with and have gone the crappy way of 3 cyl turbo with zero alternatives, which already kills the whole essence of cheap europoor shitbox

East Germans waited a decade on list, in order to buy one. Then when the Iron Curtain fell, Trabants were everywhere, abandoned, because suddenly Ossies were actually able to buy a real car.
>perfect from the start
LMAO you fool, P602 (cancelled in 1966), P603 (cancelled in 1968), and P610 (cancelled in 1979) were never produced because DDR economy was SHIT.

Perhaps it's because the 1989 model looks like an anachronism, but funny how the 1961 Trabant looks like a higher quality car with a better design than the 1989.

Anyway, Tatras are cool. The Soviets never did anything else worth keeping or replicating.

I swear I remember Konela offering them as an option, but could've been just a Konela special just like the turbo Zhigulis were back in the day.
Could've also been my memory failing me as it's been like almost 30 years now.

How you liking your Samara by the way? Carbed or FI? I was thinking about getting one as a cheap shitbox because my dad really liked my Škoda Felicia and took it, so I'm down a grocery getter.
The 120GLS is too much of a summer car for beater duties, the Volga is too over the top and the Niva is too much of a fuel thirsty bitch to get chips with from the nearby ABC station.

The biggest car Mercedes made at the time was the S600, only because going one bigger is Trabant territory
>>
>>27835497
Reminder that Horch/Sachsenring also wanted to offer a luxury limousine for the more equal comrades, but got smacked by soviets into focusing on Trabant, so top of the line afterwards became the Wartburg, and apparatchiks has to either import soviet cars, or Tatra.
>>
>>27835552
GDR government fleets mostly consisted of long boy Volvos and Citroens after the 60s. And the decline of their auto industry is not a result of soviet influence. Economic planners (correctly in this case) assumed putting money into other industrial sectors would give them a better ROI in foreign currency

They have for sure burned a lot of money on prototypes that never entered the production.
>>
>>27835586
That's the issue of a lot of Soviet manufacturers.
>Make cool as shit prototype with basically no resources available
>Government deems it too advanced/expensive and forces you to focus on farming equipment tier stuff
In a sense I understand the governments reasoning, when people have jack shit money to buy anything, a luxo barge or a sports car is probably not the most viable product to be put out.
On the other hand Soviets would've had fuel injected motorcycles and shitboxes designed by Bertone back in the late 50s if the manufacturers got their way

i'm pretty sure they never made it with ac but i might be wrong too since i'm too young to remember samara adverts but i like it very much drives well steering is pretty light and fuel consumption is somewhere between 6.7-10L/100km and has EFI that causes it to spin the engine few times before starting (i miss carbed cars)
also it starts blowing warm after smoking a ciggie in -30C

in other words get one before they're all gone

True, seems like a lot of busywork for the engineers, but a few of these projects, especially the international joint ventures, were actually supposed to enter mass production.
Another problem for the GDR's car industry was their factories were outdated, cramped and inefficient (like having the bodies loaded onto trucks, ferried around town several times inefficient) in the 50s alreeady and that's how it stayed. If the GDR had been serious about making reasonably modern cars in sufficient numbers they would have had to start from zero. And would have meant spending billions long before you can make enough cars to export to western countries. So when you can achieve the same amount of foreign exchange volume with vacuum cleaners and other appliances it's an easy decision
pic rel is my favourite bc you can still tell it's a 601 underneath

And when you think about it, Wartburg was just heavily modernized DKW F9 (concept car from 1940), that got produced by IFA since 1950.

I've seriously started to consider one of these as a daily driver, imo they offer much better bang for your buck than a tesla and the warranties are actually pretty good, 6 years for the car and 8 years for the batteries is respectable.
But I'm a broke bitch and can never afford a 50 grand car, I cope with the excuse that I took a mortgage for a house for 60 grand.
