I go out west (Utah) to ski and be in the mountains. I drive up and down snowy mountain roads, and sketchy unmaintained rocky forest wilderness roads.
My Subaru Foresters have served me well. For my next car, would a late 90s-early 00s Subaru Legacy Wagon or Subaru Outback be reasonable options (if I get a better deal on those than a Forester) or should I stick with only Forester? As I understand it Subaru sits a it higher off ground. Will Legacy Wagon or Outback have too low of clearance to make it bad for my uses?

Meant to say Forester sits a bit higher off ground (compared to Legacy and Outback)

Are American crossovers any good? RAV4 and CRVs are overpriced in my market and a target for my municipality's auto theft ring. I was thinking about a 2017 Escape, something shit enough to not attract attention from them, but not shit enough for me to want to kill myself.

You can just put forester suspension parts on the other ones to lift them. But that negates the savings from buying a non Forester

My mom's VW beetle had one of its tires explode today.
As you can see it's a mess, mainly because we had to go about half a mile to pull into a parking lot. Any chance more than just the tire itself is fucked up? Rim looks fine but I'm worried about maybe the suspension or something.
Sorry, I don't know much about cars. I'll find out what's messed up tomorrow but I'm curious.
>>
>>27974678
Suspension is fine.

You know the old wisdom of the AFR for best power is 12.5. For a race engine using full throttle very often, is there any precedent of using AFR close to 14.7 for less stops for fuel?

What are you running carb or FI? What intake manifold/plenum volume? How much camshaft and what as your manifold vacuum? Many factors determine how lean you can cruise at. Big single plane or tunnel ram Intakes or blowers won’t tolerate that large volume at a lean mixture in the intake without lean backfires and shit throttle response. That’s why they run a little richer at idle/cruise, necessity have any response. It in a 1250 Holley dominator on the street, WOT is jetted at 12.5-12.8:1 and acceptable cruise AFR is mid 13’s:1. Any leaner = shit throttle response. I get decent mileage, better than other cars I cruise with with less power/cubes simply because they’re tuned like shit. Holley carbs need air bleed tuning to adjust the off idle slot. Jets or idle screws do not affect the off idle slot whatsoever.

There's multiple panels of my car with relatively deep scratches and small bits of under-bubbling in the paint in some corners. I'd try to fill it in myself with the "pens" that are out there, but I feel like either I'd fuck it up or the pens won't turn out looking right. Am I better off taking it to a paint shop? If I do take it to a paint shop, how high of a bill would I be looking at?

I was recommended a fuel additive to prevent my old diesel nozzles from clogging up. Reading the instructions it states

But what it considered ingesting or inhaling? Is being in the general vicinity of an opened bottle a killer, or huffing directly from the open bottle? Similarly will touching the stuff be like fentanyl, or like normal diesel?

Can I force an oil change monkey to add freon to my AC?
>>
>>27976427
Its a service they advertise at some chains, but they charge you $100+ for something that you can do at home in 15 minutes and a can of refrigerant that might cost $30 also quick lube shops are staffed by greasy monkeys. They sometimes damage the cars
>>
>>27976416

>>
>>27976528
More concerned about clearance for rocks on sketchy forest roads rather than snow, with snow I think awd+good tires is a lot more important than clearance.
I mostly just wanna know if a Outback or Legacy Wagon is much more likely than a Forester to scrape and snag stuff on sketchy roads

Just don't do a BMW and make them out of aluminum, then fix them in place with steel bolts. Fuckers rot out around only the bolt 'cause dissimilar metals and all that, and then they rattle like mad.
>>
>>27976539
Its really easy. You can watch a couple of YouTube videos if you're a wrenchlet zoomer that has to watch a video to figure out how to pump gas or air up the tires
>>
>>27976545
Yes those are more likely to scrape, but again if you're driving on really shitty trails or rock crawling you should get something with a 2spd transfer case and 11+ inches of clearance.

The older Subarus arent as bad, but the 2020 wrx had 4.9 inches of clearance and that absolutely sucked, would not recommend that for anything but well maintained pavement

TLDR: Is Amsoil worth it?

Some more info, but I got my first new turbocharged car and I want to take care of it. So I've been doing all the oil changes for it at 3k intervals since that's what people recommend. I've also been using Amsoil but it can be fairly pricey. But I'm wondering at such short intervals, does it really matter?

Can I just use some good enough oil (Maybe penzoil ultra platinum, or costco kirkland oil?) and 3k intervals with marginal differences?
>>
>>27975596
most automotive chemicals will not kill you if you get a few drops on your hands, or inhale a little bit. they may burn or leave your hands feeling greasy, or in the long run give you cancer, but they wont kill you. you might get a little high if you inhale too much, ive felt this way after using spraypaint before.

the warnings on those cans are put there by legal teams who have to cater to 63 iq people and their families who will sue at the drop of a hat. “well we didn’t KNOW huffing brakleen would kill you! that should be on the bottle!”

now if youre in a non ventilated area and youre spraying shit everywhere, amd possibly bathing in it, and hell maybe even trying a little sip, these chemicals could absolutely kill you. but the bigger concern would be long term
brain/mervous system damage
>>
>>27977174
no you don’t have remote start

remote start is usually a hardware component that has to bypass the key cylinder/immobi to start the engine. so even if you bought a key, you couldn’t program it to remote start without a hardware modification
>>
>>27977688
if you’re not towing/tracking/offroading/idling 10 hours a day/doing anything that would put the engine through extra stress, youre wasting money by using such an expensive oil every 3k miles

use pennzoil platinum or mobil 1, as long as its full synthetic, its fine. unless the manual specifically calls for amsoil or you have a hookup to get it for cheaper
>>
>>27977681
superchargers are generally vampiric so when theyre connected to a small engine the performance gains just aren’t there compared to a turbocharger. turbochargers are far more efficient because they use waste gas instead of crank power. sure you have almost no lag with a SC but you can also just increase exhaust flow to limit your turbo lag, which will give you more power anyway

compare the supercharged chevy cobalt to the turbocharged one, more or less the same engine, but the turbo gets 55 more hp
>>
>>27977174
>Second question as well. If I buy a replacement fob ($Found some for $60) Is it possible to program myself or do I need to take it to the dealership?

yes, you can usually do it with a decent scan tool.
all depends on the vehicle.
like so https://www.tiktok.com/@alex.chaveiro/video/7296240584690240773

how much is the dealer charging for labor? how much for the fob?

Need to replace a nonfunctional window regulator, which I’ve never done before – the regulators I have replaced in the past were still operational, making lowering the glass to unmount it very simple.
How do you lower the window on a window regulator with a broken motor?
2001 Honda Civic EX sedan.
>>
>>27979198
Try tapping on the motor with a small hammer or something. Sometimes it just needs a tap to start temporarily moving again.

>>
>>27979129
Auto stop start does wear out the battery, starter and engine. If you disable it, your car will have lower maintenance costs over a longer lifespan but it will also burn an extra gallon of gas per month if you sit at really long traffic lights every day. If you have normal traffic lights it has no noticable impact on fuel consumption
>>
>>27979129
Theoretically the starters and batteries are stronger to cope with it. However, you are a retard if you trust anything on a new car not to break, so I’d keep it off just to be safe.

Hello, /o/. I'm looking into buying a corolla gts and found a decent looking one. I ran a carfax on it and it came back clean, but the information is showing its FWD? I always thought all AE86/AE88s were RWD? Can anyone confirm this?

>Under bubbling
It's over anon. Paint pens alone will not fix that. Bubbles under paint means that those parts have been rusted through, ie. They're gone. You'll need to get some body filler along with some fine grit sand paper (600 all the way to 3000 grit). Chrisfix has a really helpful video on patching rust bubbles. Look it up and get to work, you don't wanna ignore those bubbles.
As for the quality of paint pens, depending on how old your car is, the paint has probably faded and the pen won't match, but I think it's better than nothing

why the fuck do they put so much oil in cars?
I wanted to save money so i watched youtube vid on how to do oil change and it was pretty easy so i went under my car and unscrewed the oil plug and put an old wok pan under it to catch the oil since it's pretty big and HOLY FUCKING SHIT that fucking thing would not stop gushing, it filled the wok and started overflowling, it made a huge mess
why the FUCK do they put swimming pool worth of fucking oil in that thing?

it varies engine to engine but the standard is usually around 5 quarts. some performance cars have bigger oil pans, like the ford coyote famously has a 10 quart oil capacity

oil changes aren’t hard, but catching all the old oil is the messiest part. if youre gonna do it next time, just order an oil drain container from amazon that fits your cars capacity

as long as the trace underneath is ok it shouldn't hurt anything. a dremel with some non-aggressive polishing wheels may be able to get it off.
>>
>>27981108
That's funny, I made this mistake a few days ago with a compressor. I was like "The block is smaller than my head, how much oil can the sump possibly hold". Turns out more than the 2 quart container I was using could contain.
>>
I'm looking at 2-3 years old cars returned after a lease. I noticed I few I like which are missing 1-2 oil changes in the expected maintenance schedule. How fucked should it be the engine if skipping that on a newish car? Is it true the factory supplied oil and filter can handle better than subsequent replacements?
For context, I'm shopping Mazda3/CX-30/CX-5 with naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G 2.5l engines.
>>
>>27981197
After removing the replacement capacitor and cleaning up a bit, it's almost as if the corrosion or whatever eliminated the pad that was there, leaving a soft material that resembles cardboard after scraping away said corrosion.

What do, and how was my car able to run with a capacitor that caused such damage to the board?
>>
>>27981518
You will have to repair the trace with a wire, search youtube for repairing circuit board traces. You can either scrape a length of coating from the existing part of the trace and solder a thin solid wire to it then solder that to a capacitor lead, or you can solder a wire from the previous connection on the circuit board to the capacitor.
>how was my car able to run with a capacitor that caused such damage to the board?
hard to say. it's possible the capacitor was still passing current, it could just be a filter cap so the voltage was fluctuating more than it should but not enough to make the circuit malfunction noticeably.

More of a technical question
>Have 2009 X-Type
>Has satnav rather than the standard radio
>Because it's 2009 there's no usb or aux ports
>No problem for the aux port because you just use an adapter in the cigarette lighter
>Problem is this is only for things like charging a phone and you can't play music through it
>Standard radio has CD player and cassette
>Which means you can just use a cassette to aux adapter to play music
>The "upgraded" satnav type doesn't have a cassette player so you can't do that
>As far as I know we never reached the point of having a CD to aux adapter

tl;dr how how do I into aux car music when there doesn't seem a simple way to do it?

Is a catalytic converter even important for running a car ? I had some rattling in my 95 Dodge Dakota which has since now gone away, but I still get lower performance at higher speeds. I took it in to a shop and they told me the catalytic converter was falling apart and would take $1500 to replace. Is this something I can just ignore or nah? Or is there something I could run through the engine to clean it out since it no longer rattles? Thanks

>>
>>27981633
The car might get grumpy and throw an engine light, but no, you don't need a Catalytic Convertor and the car will run fine without one. Look for a "Decat pipe" or "Test pipe" for your car, they usually have a place to put the sensor so it tricks the car into thinking it has a cat, meaning no engine light.
>>
>>27981714
I think that first one will be better because it's an ancient 6th gen iPod. I don't think there's any bluetooth or anything on it.
I'd just use my phone, but I prefer that for the satnav because it's easier to position and see.
Thanks I'll try one of those.

I'm in the middle of an engine swap. The plastic intake tube that connects the throttle body to the AFM/MAF on the other side of the engine bay sits a little too close to some of the accessory belts. I want to somehow bridge the gap between the MAF connection and the tube.
Are these silicone tubes usually stiff enough that I could tighten the rubber-end of the intake tube onto this without crushing it?
Otherwise, I will buy an aluminum 2.75" coupler and snap it to the MAF connection with a rubber coupler and then connect the intake tube to the aluminum coupler. This'll probably $20 more but at least I know it'll work.

No, these silicone tubes will buckle like rubber. You *might* get a seal and it *might* stay put just cause of the friction of the two parts, but the chance of it coming off probably wouldn't be zero, so I wouldn't chance it.

>>
>>27982730
>The big stick out thing is the transmission right
You mean out the back of the engine? Yes. It's a bit squashed together because Automation uses a normal transmission instead of a transaxle, but it otherwise looks correct to me. The transmission will point to the driven wheels, which in your case is the rear wheels. If it's AWD, there will be a shaft leading to the front wheels too, but the trans will still be placed at the rear of the car.

I’m sure I can figure it out myself, but I’m going to call it a night after installing my new window regulator after work, and either take a look at it tomorrow or later this week.
So, I’m pretty sure I’ve secured all mounting bolts for the motor and regulator, however, I did have to use one of the phillips screws from the old motor to secure the lower mounting hole (that might be the culprit), as I noticed the glass wasn’t lowering properly when I first tested the regulator with the door panel off; everything seemed to be working fine after I have completely secured the regulator with the phillips screw.
After I have secured the door panel back into place, I tested the window again and while it will lower just fine most of the way down, the glass wants to go off track 90% of the way down and I noticed the door panel will bulge out. That’s when I decided to give up on it, for now.
The window regulator is supposed to have four 10mm bolts holding it into place, but I only had three, and I used a phillips screw to secure the lower end of the regulator. The same goes for the window motor, where there’s supposed to be four 10mm fasteners securing it to the door, but I only had three. I’m not sure if getting the proper fasteners will solve the issue, but then again, that may be it.
I’m also going to need to check the fasteners securing the window tracks.

Got any other ideas for me to check?

Why are CVT transmissions expensive to repair or not serviceable at all? You would expect a simpler design to be easier to repair.
>>
>>27984332
Basically I mean the whole idea was to make something like a Boxster. I love Boxsters, and the primary reason I love them is because they use the Boxer engine economically so that you have a generous frunk and moderately okay trunk, making it probably the most practical day-to-day mid-engine car on that alone.

Thing is, I have no idea how to get it working like that in Automation. Main issues I see being:
-Even if I'm trying to use a wide, short engine like a boxer, for some reason the game uses the inside of the rear wheel wells as it's width limit even if I'm trying to fit the engine totally in front of the wheel well. Kind of defeats the point of using a wide engine layout compared to a long one when mid-engine
-I have no idea how to organize all the engine bay components to make at least an empty space in where I can at least pretend the trunk goes.
>>
How long can you run an engine without coolant ?
I'm putting a build back together and I just wanted to check shit before I get all the coolant lines back on. It's a simple iron block 4 cylinder + aluminum head engine.
>>
>>27984839
I mean it depends how warm it gets, which depends on so many different things. If you could blast it with compressed air or something while running it it might give you more time. But it's not really an answerable question.
>>
>>27984885
Fair enough. Shot in the dark, a minute or two wouldn't blast a head gasket right ?guess I'll find out tomorrow.
>>
>>27984907
Why not have it hooked up to a test radiator, or at least fill and plug the engine? I'd imagine water and antifreeze are a lot cheaper and less hassle than a seized engine.

I will admit, I'm not entirely sure why you're struggling. Assuming you have an appropriately sized body and don't make the engine too wide (bore determines the size of the engine), you shouldn't have any trouble recreating the desired cargo space, especially with a Flat style engine. I have a minor blue warning for clearance issues with a DOHC 96mm bore Flat 6, but that's perfectly normal for this kind of setup. Boxsters are tight to work on in situ IRL, too.

>for some reason the game uses the inside of the rear wheel wells as it's width limit even if I'm trying to fit the engine totally in front of the wheel well
The game has a fixed location for the engine, regardless of if you move it with the advanced trim fixtures. I don't have much experience with mid engine bodies, but I don't think I've seen a single one where the engine doesn't have to squeeze between the wheel wells in some capacity.

>I have no idea how to organize all the engine bay components to make at least an empty space in where I can at least pretend the trunk goes.
Maybe this is a body issue? The game has obvious and often annoying limitations, but looking at pic rel, you can see that there is a very obvious area where a compartment could sit, exactly like a Boxster.
>>
>>27984828
>>27985620
Oh, and here's a cross section of a Boxster for reference. I figure you've maybe seen one anyway, but I'd argue my car in automation actually looks far more spacious than the Boxster.
>>
>>27984798
Don't quote me, but per my humble investigation:
A simpler design could deliver the same results, for a shorter period (5-10 years vs 10-20)
or require higher quality parts to make it last to 10-20 mark - which they're not interested on delivering
or require less tolerant tools/procedures, which makes the maintenance more expensive, without adding much cost during the manufacturing process

While you could still change the CVT fluid at home:
It's overall more expensive than the typical ATF for a close match at the same manufacturer
It's overall more complex: no dipsticks, need a scan tool to check the level, replacement should be done at specific temperature, etc
That's why a took many of the newest Honda/Toyota models from my shopping list in favor of more old school designs like Mazda Skyactiv 6sp AT
>>
>>27985551

>>
>>27984839

This is what I'm talking about. The game's logic uses that default position in-between the wheel well when there's all that space behind the seats where a bigger, wider engine could go. Same reason why making transverse engines feels like a waste a lot of time in the game. Sure advanced trim features let you move the engine but that's just cosmetic. And the exhausts never actually poke out far enough from the body paneling.
>>
>>27985987
Oh and like you show with the cross-reference picture the intake manifold's actual intake should be facing somewhere near the vents in the back of the boxster instead of pointed directly at the back of the seats but all things considered that's one of the smaller issues.

From this they want to inspect the engine but need to pull it out and take it apart just to find if they are correct.

Before the sensor failure I noticed no issues with the engine and now reason for concern, no warnings about the coolant.

if you can fill up the slave cyl with fluid before installing by putting the hose end into a bottle of brake fluid and squeezing it to suck the fluid up, do that, it'll make bleeding much faster.
>>
>>27987604
before cracking it open, check for oil in teh coolant system, coolant in the oil (foamy like mayonnaise), and use a head gasket tester to check for exhaust gases in the cooling system.
if positive i'd just keep driving it until it gets worse, doesn't sound like it's causing problems and it could run for months or years like that. if it's a shitbox, add the head gasket sealer in a can stuff, but only if you're absolutely sure the HG is trashed.

Trying to figure out if I've got a blown headgasket. popped the hood, took expansion tank cap off, started engine from cold, coolant in tank had no bubbles, frothing, etc. revved engine in neutral and it puked out a bunch of coolant. Is this normal, or a sign of a blown headgasket? NA gas motor, belt driven water pump, nothing fancy. Just want to know for sure it's the headgasket before I start pulling it apart.

dafuq is going on here? o2 sensors are a couple years old but have fuckall miles (like 30k i think) and same with intake gaskets as i had to do a head gasket around the same time i did the o2 sensors. it idles fine, drives fine, sounds fine and otherwise gets acceptable mileage, so its nothing obviously detrimental to the engine, but clearly there is still an issue somewhere that i would like to fix.
>>
>>27989825
forgot to mention those are positive trims, so the engine is running lean and the computer is adding fuel. and also the accel numbers are consistent with the amount of throttle input, they dont really change with how much youre pressing the gas.

>>27989841
it's not terrible, but worth fixing. did you use an OEM o2 sensor when you replaced it or chinkshit? if chinkshit good chance that's the problem.
could also be a vacuum leak somewhere (smoke test it) or clogged injectors.
>>
>>27990003
>neew
***need
>>
>>27987604
>And there is evidence of combustion gas in the coolant system.
what is this evidence they speak of?
did they do a block test?
if they did a block test and there is combustion gasses in the coolant, then you probably have a bad head gasket. or potentially more severe damage, but more likely just a bad head gasket
>>
>>27990006
i used densos so (should be) gtg and apparently it was back in 2020. are you sure about a vac leak? I've always read that a high ltft at idle that drops with throttle is an indicator of a leak, but these aren't doing that. I could be wrong of course but just saying and I'll smoke it anyway as I do have a smoke machine.
>>
>>27990006
and again I forgot something, I did pull and clean the injectors about the same time back then for shits and giggles and they all were clear
>>
>>27989165
update, just ran a compression test (while cold again) and got equal readings across all cylinders (cheap tester so don't trust the numbers it gave me, but they were all exactly the same). Spark plugs look like the engine is running on the lean side (expected, there's a vacuum leak I'm trying to fix) but none of them look any different to the others. The only reason I'm checking this is that I'm losing coolant and the dipstick has a very small amount of milky residue on plus the oil is very slightly milky in appearance, but it is only slight plus there's no residue on the filler cap at all or any oil in the coolant. I'm going to get a block tester just to be sure, but i'm 50/50 that I'm chasing a non-issue at this point (aside from losing coolant of course).

Is it stupid to ask if price is negotiable or should i just jump into it

Does /o/ use sealer when installing paper or cork gaskets? What do you use?
>>
>>27990006
Well a smoke test confirmed the intake gasket is leaking on I think cylinder 1, so that solves that, but no visible leaks on bank 2 so I'm going to guess exhaust leak and check that later on when it's not 95 outside
>>
>>27991660
any unmetered air anywhere can throw off the mixture for both banks. it's possible that's your problem.
start it up and you should see STFT be approximately negative about the same as LTFT is positive, that means it's overriding its learned value with the correct value.
if problem persists, check MAF values against spec (when warm at idle usually about 1 g per liter of displacement), MAP values against atmosphere, and raw O2 sensor values.

>>
>>27990924
Just jump into it.
You are entitled to have your own valuation, they are entitled to have theirs, and the two do not have to meet at a point where the purchase goes through.
If their asking price seems fine, I wouldn't try to lowball them since you signal you have no leverage if you have to jump back up.
>asking $10k
>you want the car but you lowball $7k
>he says he has 6 people lined up to buy it
>you now have to jump way up, showing that your $7k was nowhere near what you actually valued the car
If I was the seller and I saw that I'd hold firm at $10k. I wouldn't take an offer of $9500 from you.
If your initial offer was $9500, I might have taken it even with 6 more people lined up.

Have in mind what you are willing to buy the car for and negotiate around that value; don't throw numbers out at random or think it's some formulaic, "I'll throw out a number and we'll meet in the middle." If you have no actual number in mind, a dealership can get you to pay more than listed price by getting you to start moving up and then he adds extras on top to get you negotiating towards the higher number he swapped to.

$5k is a lot for an old jeep. Those are known for transmission and electrical problems, certain engines were pretty bad. the clutch isn't disengaging when you press the pedal. are you sure the clutch is fully bled? air in the lines can easily cause that. it can be tough to bleed the slave cylinder.
>>
>>27994748
>I just replaced the clutch in my shitbox and everything seems to be fine although the clutch feels easier to push in now. Not spongy but just way easier than it was before. Is this normal?
yeah it could be especially if it's a different brand of clutch, different clutches/slave cylinders can have a different feel. as long as it engages smoothly and doesn't make noise/vibration, it's fine
>>
>>27994991
I used a little hand vacuum pump and bled it at the slave. I may get my wife to pump the pedal and I'll crack open the bleeder and do it that way as one last resort. >>
>>27994672
>>27994991
>>27995000
try gravity bleeding the clutch. fill the reservoir full then crack the bleeder valve and just let it sit dripping for at least 10 minutes or so, refilling the reservoir as needed. shake the car around a bit to burp it as you let it bleed as well. that can allow tough trapped air to escape.
>>
>>27995001
also, you checked that it will go into gear with the car off, correct? just making sure something in your shift linkage didn't get knocked loose in the process
>>
>>27995003
yea that's nbd. tried 2 man bleeding it and no difference. Resigned myself to thinking something is wrong with the install or some clutch pieces don't like each other for some dumb reason and so the fork isn't disengaging it as much as it should be...or at all. don't even think I may a lot more room to let it disengage more if I messed with the pedal height inside the car, maybe. might just buy an oem kit and redo all this...
