Let's play a game, /o/.

Describe the Engine in your Car in such a way that someone could guess what Engine it is. Ask questions about the Engine or the Powertrain, but you can't directly ask what Car it's in. Goal is correctly guessing a specific Engine Code. We'll call it "Motor Charades".

I'll start.

Features:

It's an All-Aluminum Foam Cast Long Block, Bore x Stroke Ratio is Undersquare, it has 10.0:1 Compression, Multiport Fuel Injection, DOHC, 16 Valves, VVT Cams, a Muffled Intake, a Choked Exhaust, Redline around 6300.

Despite that, it makes just enough power to get out of it's own way, probably due to various improvements it inherited from it's bigger, younger brother.

155 hp @6100, 150 lb-ft @4900. Don't let the 2nd Torque number fool you though, it's beefy down low. VVT has its benefits.

2 Timing Chains to be found here. One for the Cams, another for the Water Pump and 2 balance shafts.

Problems:

The Timing Chain Tensioner (for the Cams) likes to die (especially the older style), at best jumping a bit out of time to limp to a shop, at worst bending all your Valves, damaging your Pistons, completely and utterly trashing your entire valvetrain and your whole timing system. A totalled Long Block, essentially.

PCV can be problematic. It's one of those fixed orfice style Breathers that likes to suck in Oil and start drinking if it gets clogged up enough.

Honestly? As long as you keep an eye on that Tensioner you're fucking golden. It's not even that hard to change them anyway. You'll know if a Tensioner is gonna die soon if you hear some rattle on startup that either takes a while to stop or doesn't go away. If the Water Pump ever decides to die, it's normally a pain in the ass to do but luckily for me, they aren't known for going bad very often AND, my newer revision has a neat little access plate.

Trivia:

Of all companies, Lotus had a hand in the design of the Engine Family this guy is from.

1.2l (or 1.1l, depending on who you ask) inline 4, cast iron closed deck block, alu head. 16 valves, SOHC. Dead simple and dead reliable, just feed it new timing belts from time to time.
Calculated that fuel cut kicks in at 6k, the car it's in doesn't have a tach.
Makes a whole 25% more horsepower than its 8V counterpart, and was also briefly built as a turbo variant with a modified head, lower compression pistons, an adorable little oil cooler, and a metal valve cover and intake manifold instead of the plastic items of the NA version I have.

Yessir you got it.

Though there were no "regular" 2.0s, every ecotec 2.0 was either supercharged or turbocharged.

My eco 2.2 is a later variant (LAP) with VVT, see. It picks up a couple hp over the older 2.2 (L61).

This engine was the company's first in house made engine family. 1.5L inline 4, dohc, wasted spark, slightly less power than more expensive competitors.
This engine is sought after for an Australian racing series.

Yeah it's the Ecotec. Not the 2.4 LE5 though, the later 2.2, codename LAP.
>>
>>27995222
nice. how about this
This 3.5L V6 is known for a great mix of performance and efficiency. It uses dual-injection, DOHC with 24 valves, and variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust cams. With a high compression ratio, it gives you strong torque and decent top-end power, making around 290 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. It’s generally reliable, but you might run into carbon buildup or a water pump failure down the line. You’ll usually find it in sedans and SUVs.
>>
>>27995223
A dual injection engine with carbon buildup issues? That's odd.

Water Pump issues? I wanna say the later Ford Cyclone 3.5, AKA the Duratec 35. But I couldn't find any variants that match 290 hp and 270 lb-ft exactly.

>>
>>27997461
I was in the same boat as you once, wondering what I could to the 2200 in my Sunfire to make it less of a dog.

The answer was getting an Ecotec. I haven't looked back desu.

There just isn't any decent aftermarket for 122s, anything worthwhile doing is pretty much always a custom fab of some sort.

If you're willing to put up with that, see if you can't grab some forged guts and fab some stuff up for a Turbo (and maybe some stiff valve springs). It's the only route outside of Nitrous to actually make power.
>>
right number of cylinders, wrong direction
>>
>>27997472
i have an ecotec in my ion and while i like it, the 2.2 ohv has a lot of charm and is really easy to work on. I'm keeping it stockish for the time being other than a ported head and ls7 lifter internals in the stock lifter housings, and a full exhaust. I wanna get a cam but they cost way too much for the only ones left for sale ($625 lol). I've been tempted to get a turbo and run it at low boost just to help with the altitude sickness it gets in the mountains but im not worried about that right now. I could also get 2200 pistons and blow the motor up with compression. I'd have to swap to the f23 first, which I dont wanna do because the mk7 shifts amazingly and im not a fan of the f23 in my saturn. I'm not aiming for power with it, just want it to have a bit more pep.
Were you on j-body.org back when?

>>
>>27997490
Nah I'm a young'un, I only lurked j-body.org, was always too much of a cowardly fag to put myself on there. By the time I would've just about mustered the courage to sign up, I'd already sold my Sunfire.
>>
>>27997525
im a newfag there too, i got my funfire in 2021 and just lurk. im guessing youre op with a cobalt now?
>>
>>27997548
You got me. Brakes on the Sunfire gave out one day, pissing Brake Fluid all over. Just lost patience with it and moved on.

Imagine my shock when I start smelling GAS shortly after getting my Cobalt. Yup, Fuel Lines were Metal Cancer'd up.

My taste in cars doesn't fall far from the tree, and neither does GM's bullshit.

Lucky for me, someone made an aftermarket stainless steel braided flexible Fuel Line that was pretty much plug-n-play for like $150. Could've I made my own lines cheaper? Yeah, but it would've been a pain in the ass and I didn't feel like getting rinsed at a shop either.

do you have anything done to that cobalt or is it just stock? I havnt messed with the ecotec in my saturn other than doing the chain tensioner the day after I got it. Also if youre on the east coast, ecotecs on the dragon is next month I believe. will probably be a bunch of ricers and older folks but it could be cool. I'm gonna try and make it up there
>>
>>27997613
It's basically stock, 2.2 eco guts are weak as hell and I'd be more comfortable just getting a SS with a LNF and building that up.

I'm east coast but north of the border. Frankly too busy with personal shit to come down south.

Nice Sunfire.
