>smaller wheels = more torque
So why not ride on tiny wheels
>>
>>27986249
because gas mileage is a concern and a legal requirement for vehicles
>>
>>27986249
Because short gearing means no speed
>>
>>27986249
fuuuck imagine slapping some 11s on those wheels
>>
>get vehicle
>increase size of vehicle
>leave tire size the same
>tires are now smaller relative to larger vehicle
>free torque
>>
>>27986251
Then explain how a 40 year old geo metro gets 50mpg on tiny wheels.
>>
>>27986267
It's relative to transmission gearing and torque dumbass
>>
>>27986269
because it weighs virtually nothing and has extremely low drag plus the engine is quite small and weak
>>
>>27986267
>>27986271
increased tire wear as less surface area combined with more torque = more frequent tire replacements

also decreased grip as smaller contact patch on bigger vehicle = difficulty in arresting motion/braking/slowing down.

you niggas need to learn about inertia n sheeeit
>>
>>27986286
So you're saying the wheels have nothing to do with MPGs?
>>
>>27986291
i didn't say that, but you need to understand cars have transmissions with gearing ratios and differentials with gearing ratios, these things also play a role in fuel economy. putting tiny wheels on a transmission and diff that are geared for a much larger wheel will create problems in terms of power delivery, not to mention it'll fuck up your speedo.

an olde thymey bicycle with a giant wheel and the appropriate gearing ratio could be very efficient to pedal, but if it had the wrong ratio it'd be very inefficient and either impossible to move or exhausting to move 5 feet
>>
>>27986301
>not to mention it'll fuck up your speedo.
oh no not my poor speedometer that is already off by 20 mph
>>
>>27986306
Skill issue, maintain your shit negro
>>
>>27986306
so go ahead and put 12" wheels on your 2009 Altima, see how fun it is to drive around, literally no one will stop you from doing this
>>
>>27986269
i put 195/60r15 on my metro and my mpg improved because the drag of the cylinders in the engine outweighed the drag of the larger tires and i artificially increased the final drive ratio
>>
>>27986310
>2009 Altima
is the altima in the room with us?
>>27986308
heh the gauges were never accurate on this car even factory
>>
>>27986301
>an olde thymey bicycle with a giant wheel and the appropriate gearing ratio could be very efficient to pedal
Those bicycles never had gears or chains. They were direct drive to that front wheel. Do you have another stupid explanation to spew at us?

1990 wheels were 14". Those cars got 30-35mpg
2024 wheels are 24". These cars are getting 20-30mpg.

Make it make sense.

I spent like 20 minutes trying to understand if that would have more or less torque than a regular 18 speed bike and I realized I'm too stupid to calculate the rough ratios in my head
>>
>>27986249
Wheelspin goes brrrrrrr
>>
>>27986560
>some hipster design with a tiny wheel and gay gears and chains as opposed to the actual ye olde timey bikes.
You are a very bad man.
>>
>>27986585
You are ignoring the original example which was about gearing ratios vs. wheel size, not about the prevalence of fixies vs. chain drive bikes.

Checkmate, NIGGA.
>>
>>27986621
The original question is about smaller tires on vehicles, not gearing. Shut up, bigot.

MY original point was about the correct gearing ratio being more important than wheel size. Effectively, your wheel size is less important than the gearing ratio that precedes it. You can get identical power delivery from a 10" wheel and a 20" wheel if you have a higher ratio for one and a lower ratio for the other.

I don't know why you hate math so much, it's just science. You do believe in SCIENCE, don't you?

DON'T YOU.
>>
>>27986675
Wow, you're smart, science man. Now tell me why tractors have 4' tall wheels and why shopping carts have tiny little wheels.
>>
>>27986689
Tractors have big wheels because they provide lots of surface area and large contact patch. Shopping carts have small wheels because they fit nicely under the frame and are appropriate for the speeds and terrain a shopping cart encounters. Also shopping carts do not have transmissions or engines.
>>
>>27986694
>Tractors have big wheels because they provide lots of surface area and large contact patch.
They make relatively small tires with greater contact patches for mud for tractors, that still doesn't explain tractor tires.
>>
>>27986249
Just change your diff or final gear. Same effect.
>>
>>27986712
you can get a shorter tire with wider tread or a taller tire with narrower tread

different schools of though on which is more efficient, and this is an ongoing debate in the world even now. some offroaders swear that "pizza cutter" tires are better whereas some think fat and wide is the best way to go.

this is why you see tractors with varying sizes, different companies have different views. also easier to rotate a smaller wheel as it weighs less. less strain on driveline = less chance of breaking something.

Watched that on YouTube. Reason it's really dangerous is that he created a new truck PCD and the wheels don't seat properly.

What did I tell you, about posting retarded shit?
>>

what's retarded about it? Nobody has answered the question
>>

There are many, many answers in this thread, just probably ones you don't like.

>>
>>27986249
How do you plan on running 13'' rotors in a 10'' rim without retarded offsets or single brake rotor commercial axles?
>>
>>27989433
They're not retarded offsets when it brings the rotors off the wheels, inward (center of gravity/balance) and just works better.
>but its harder to change pads!
yeah, the twice ever anyone will ever change pads on in their driveway.
