sort of related since it's offroad
my 4wheeler just started having problems after do a mudrun all day
the front hydraulic brakes will not release and maintain pressure, so they lock up as soon as you use them. Only way to get them unfrozen is to open the bleeder.
since it's both brakes i'm guessing it's a master cylinder problem, right?
>>
>>28018467
either you've got water/mud in the lines or your pistons are jammed up. probably want to disassemble the calipers and bleed the lines, mudding fucks up anything. bought a used Honda from someone before I knew better (had an ABS snorkle on it) and the diff was packed with mud.
>>
>>28018473
just tried bleeding the lines with new fluid, thought maybe water got inside. i'll blow the pistons out of the body this weekend and double check. they release fine once you open the bleeder so i'm not hopeful that they are just jammed up.

any Toyota guys have experience with putting 17s on old pickups?
Have an 84 SR5 Xtracab and want that better off-road tire selection that 17s have. Seen a lot of conflicting opinions and most manufacturers don't show fitment for it. Just got done putting a 3in lift on it. Thinking a 33in tire.

Go with skinnies on 16s, like 255/85r16. Really wide tires are too heavy for a lil 85 hilux

What stuff do you guys keep for offroading specifically. Ive got a shovel, snatch strap, d rings/soft shackles, and a jump box. In sure other things might come in handy but i feel like im covered for 90% of scenarios i have come across or been in.

So I was actually just looking and thinking of keeping the 15s and doing the Kenda Kleaver M/T2 629037, so a 33x9.50R15
would look pretty rugged with all that sidewall. Gonna change the wheels though.

Firestone's no name offshoot. Their highway tires held up but I never found info on their AT tires. They're made in korea apparently.
>>
>>28020308
Unless they are insanely cheap I don't get why people penny pinch and take risks with weird pseudo chink brands or stuff without any info. If they're super cheap you're probably getting something shitty too, so I just don't get the logic. You replace tires every 5-7 years, average out that cost per year and per month and usually it's pretty miniscule.

Even if I only get 5 years out of my latest set of A/Ts it's like $40/month.

Probably 10k miles. A lot of offroading though. So much that the numbers are getting rubbed off of the sidewalls.

They also never balanced quite right. But there were very cheap tires, so it's about what I expected. They are made in USA though and I think they just discontinued them.

Are they Wranglers? That's the only AT Goodyear I'd trust.

I've also heard people complain about BFG KO2s not balancing properly, even after extensive road-force balancing attempts. Given the low frequency of these complaints I'm inclined to think it's either a one-off/bad tire or it's something to do with the specific vehicle. Anecdotally I had a pair of 10 ply KO2s last 7 years and over 100,000km so I just can't say anything bad about them (except the price is too high now).

I've got Toyo AT3s now, will be very interested to see how the nips shape up and particularly in the winter.

Curious if your tires are P series or LT series?
>>
>>28023218
Had a friend with KO2's and he joked that one of his wheels was "up armored"- the retarded tech puts rim weights halfway around.

Not necessarily, depends on the mileage and condition. Dieselniggers are notorious for abusing their trucks and letting them rot so you will want to go over it with a fine tooth comb before making an offer in any case.
>>

The polyurethane white grease doesn't last long, you drive through a few puddles and they start creaking like a motherfucker.

Also, the bushings in the bottom of the end links that attack to the axle mounts grab onto the nut and loosen it over time. Didn't have that problem with the rubbers. Suppose I could toss a big ol washer down there.

ive not touched my free envoy denali in 6 months, tossed around lots of options, iron 5.3, gen 3 computer swap, 6.5 diesel, sbc, 4200, 2.9 atlas, 4.3, 3.9, ecotec, turbos, i have finally settled on something for a month or so without changing my mind. We're getting a gen 4 6.0 block, putting a 408 scat crank in it, putting our topend on it with a truck norris cam, rebuilding our 4l60e with some goodies and swapping a 2wd tailshaft, and junking every bit of the 4wd front end

im not against trails but we dont have em, it snows 2 weeks out of the year, and the gmt360 4wd system sucks absolute balls, im going to build a mall crawler and there's nothing any of you can do about it

i put a 273 into a chrysler 300 before, that was fun, but i am looking for a more polished result. everything in the gmt360 just sucks ass and its better as a 2wd. most of those swaps involve re-using factory mounting of some sort or improving engine bay space, because with the factory setup it sucks

Long time lurker, first time poster

How many of you daily your off-roaders?

I'm looking into this hobby. I live in the Midwest US. I have a lot of capital (ER doc). I recently went on a trip abroad and do some offroading / over landing and had a ton of fun. So now I'm looking at options here. Ideally I'd like to have a vehicle I could daily but also take off the road. As I'm in the Midwest I have concerns about buying used rust buckets so I'd likely lean something newer. I'm actually thinking a new land cruiser or 4runner. I also tested a ranger raptor but it seems a bit much.

Would I be a dipshit out there with the land cruiser?
>>
I have a Chevrolet S10 from 89. It's been sitting in the garage since forever. I don't know cars and asking around shops a LS swap is around 5k for the engine and all the work, a bit more than expected. Any other recommendations? I just want it to carry around some tools and visit family in the mountains.

Don't waste your money on an expensive new car just to offroad it. If you're an ER Doctor you have plenty of money, spend $40k on a used 4Runner and modify it. You'll get something that's only a few years old so it has plenty of life left, good reliability, fantastic 4.0L engine, and a shitload of aftermarket parts to customize it whatever way you need.

Don't get old crusty shit unless you're dangerously poor, like the resident cumguzzler furfag. He will tell you to buy disgusting shitboxes, but he's gay and a furry so obviously ignore him.

Trucks are inferior to SUVs when offroading. 4Runners have IFS and a SRA which makes them ideal as a light daily driver and decent offroader. Sort of a compromise, but for 99% of offroading a SFA is not necessary.

Identify exactly what you want to do and modify accordingly. Don't just jump to throwing steel bumpers front and back + 3" lift + roof rack + winch + 200lbs of LED lights if you're not going to be living out of the car 6 months a year.

I DD my froader but less now than in the past. I have 2 other cars that I use for grocery getting. Adding mods to your froader will cut gas mileage down and make it heavier/handle worse on paved surfaces. There's no perfect combination, the more you prep it for froading the worse it will be on paved roads. Remember that you're modifying things for practical purposes, not mallcrawling and Insta likes.

*I'm going to refrain from saying what I froad to avoid future drama from the petulant niggers that sometimes inhabit this thread.
>>
>>28032108
Is the frame intact? Is the rest of the vehicle in decent shape?

Considering the truck has been sitting for ages, you can basically say it hasn't cost you anything. So for $5,000 you have a truck with a virtually brand new engine (not sure if it's a rebuild or new crate engine you're considering) that will let you haul stuff and get to difficult locations. $5k isn't that much considering a new shitty base model SIilverado or F150 is over $40k.

Trucks are better for "overlanding" or touring around. As soon as you start getting into low and tight trails their shortcomings show up, even just making turns around trees means 3-4 point turns vs. an SUV having no issue navigating it.
>>
>>28032120
Yeah it's in great shape other than the engine, at some point 20 years ago my uncle put a V6 engine of another car in there but i'ts been sitting since it began having issues like 10 years ago. This is in Mexico so it's 5k here for a used (rebuild) engine and the installation. But new trucks are just as expensive around 40k
>>
>>28032137
Get the rebuilt engine if it's a trustworthy shop getting a properly rebuilt engine. $5k isn't too bad, I'm in Canada and you'd pay some faggots $10k to put an engine in up here.

I like your Tundra but I've had nothing but bad experiences with 90% of the trucks that use the trails around me. It's always dipshits in brotrucks with 10" Rough Country lifts and 22" wheels getting stuck and blocking the trailer, or it's tards in commercial trucks that weight 8,000lbs sinking into puddles and - yes - blocking trails for everyone. I've also noticed trucks NEVER move over on trails, even when they have space, the drivers always just expect everyone to drive half into the trees so they can stay 100% on the trail. Ignorant behavior like that leaves me with a salty attitude, especially when they fuck up and expect me to help dig them out or cut down trees to make room for their dumb ass F550 hydro truck.

You get a pass for running an OG Tundra and keeping it going too.

anyways, I'm gonna post the pics of the 24 volt humvee light bars I've been converting to 12 volt

they're all getting converted from HID to LED currently

>>>/k/62675008
the lights come with HID pods inside, I don't like HID because they take a full minute to become full brightness and they are less efficient than LED
also the ballasts in these are designed for 24 volt military vehicles so they won't work on a normal truck anyways

If I had access to the scratch that you do, I would consider a few different paths.

1.
>buy a decent 4x4 on the used market and offroad that as a non daily driver

2.
>amass a garage full of tools to build a dedicated off-roader that you would truck and trailer to the trails

3. (what I would do with doctor money)
Go on RaceDezert and buy a nicely built rig

>>28032486
would have to be a boost converter and a boost converter that can handle 100 watts might be kinda pricey but idk there might be some chinkshit ones on eBay for cheap
I don't like the HID though because they take so long to reach full brightness, the instant on of the LEDs is really nice also they consume less power so I can use a standard 3 pin deutsch connector without overloading it's current capacity

Had a fuel tank venting issue on the Heep, so I dropped it to install new vent valves. While I had the tank out figured I'd double check that I had the new fuel pump seated correctly and it was in fact not seated correctly. There's a little metal bowl that the rubber stopper that the end of the return line is supposed to sit in. The way I had it the return line was just dragging on the bottom of the tank. Fixed that shit, got it in properly, and the fuel pump runs so much quieter/better.

Fuckin' stoked homies. Also threw in a WIX fuel filter to replace the 2 dollar band ding ow filter. She's running so much happier now with proper fueling.

I bet this dude is having overheating issues and installed a fan to try and fix it
An XJ 4.0 tale as old as time itself
>>
>>28033592
*Manual switch for the existing e-fan.

The stock setup has the fan kick on once the coolant temp reaches something like 218 degrees. On a hot day wheeling, that's too high in my opinion, so I wanted control over when the fan turns on. It's a very common mod. Works great. The stock e-fan is a good fan, it's just programmed to come on when it's already a little too hot.
>>
>>28033614
>218 degrees
I would assume this is actually closer to 190°. 218° would be high to start cooling.
>>
>>28033625
Yeah it is too high. But that's what it is. The mechanical clutch fan does 90% of the work, but the aux e-fan is there to kick on only when the A/C is on, or when temp reaches 218. That's why people install switches. They say they did that shit for emissions reasons so the e-fan wouldn't kick it out of open loop by cooling it too much.
>>
>>28033614
Why would you bother modding a jeep when the axles of an Xterra are stronger and better?
The jeep should be your winter beater and you should get a stronger body on frame vehicle like an Xterra that also has stronger front and rear axles then a jeep XJ
You’re wasting your time man, just buy an Xterra it’s better

There’s a 1989 Toyota SR5 4x4 with the 3.0 V6. It’s got almost 400k miles and he’s asking $5k.

I did a deep dive on this a couple of years ago. Long story short, they all start to chip over time, especially if you actually use the garage. The prep work has to be immaculate. You have to double what the manufacturer recommends to get a halfway decent result, so the costs are twice of what is anticipated. You should consider an alternative like picrel.

yeah im renting a shot blaster for the floor from sunbelt rentals and im spending like 1k on the epoxy, professional epoxy with full flake not sparse flakes
it should last around 20 or 30 years especially considering there will be no hot tire pick up in this room
an epoxy primer with flake then 2 part polyaspartic top coat will basically be indestructible

It's cool how they are taking heavy BOF offroaders and giving them tiny over worked turbocharged engines that are already plagued with problems. If there's one thing offroaders love to do its abandon their $80,000 vehicle on a trail because it threw a rod or the turbo blew itself up, only to come back and find all the windows smashed and their shit stolen. Personally I love catastrophic powertrain failures when I'm in a remote area without cell service, it puts my safety in jeopardy and also increases the likelihood of my disabled vehicle being vandalized as it's not repairable on the trail.

I think we can all agree that having a vehicle with a ton of electronics and more complicated engine is a good thing, particularly when it's difficult or impossible to call for a tow truck.
I also love mass migration and vaccines. Just fuck my shit up everyone I'm a faggot.
>>
>>28043253
We're currently in a new malaise era where all vehicles are crippled by retarded regulations and gobermint mandates.

It won't last forever though. They'll start making good shit again at some point when people have finally had enough.
>>

>I think we can all agree that having a vehicle with a ton of electronics and more complicated engine is a good thing
that's why I diesel swapped my trucks, no computers, no electronics like fuel pumps to break, entirely mechanical without a single need for electricity at all, manual transmissions etc
cuts the amount of points of failure by like 90%
>>
>>28043819
>ALL MANUELS

This is the way to go. I regret having an autotragic, 3/4 of the problems I've had with it are tranny cooler lines leaking.

Why though? Are there any new vehicles that aren’t overpriced shit?

Nah. The original rubber flooring disintegrated when i lifted it up. i bought new sheet metal, carpet, and door seals for the cab. doors and front fenders are still rotted, yet functional.

Largely due to changing legislation making it impossible or cost-prohibitive to sell their older gasoline vehicles with larger displacement engines. Plus they'll be left behind in the wake of the normie ECO WAVE of nufag cars that get +30mpg.
But since Toyota is only good at finding something and slowly refining it for decades, not innovating and producing amazing hits right out of the gate, they have shit the bed.

There are some who claim it was intentional; that the design defects were a form of corporate espionage designed to attack their most profitable makes. Same accusation was levied in the mid 2000s when they had failed piston seals on their 2.4L engines. The likely culprit is just jewish decision making and penny pinching.

gotta go pickup my motor for my 84 toyota pickup today

meh. those pickups aren't great with a heavy engine up front. kinda ruins them.
should just build a square body
>>
>>28046891
It'll be fine. Just use a lightweight bumper and no winch up front to offset some of the weight gain. Could run a rear winch instead of you need one.

wise XJ dog man,

I'm thinking about buying an XJ.
I want to build it for mostly camping and exploring.
I'm living close to the Arctic circle so there will be a ton of snow.

based on your experience are there any must have mods to make it work ?
how much or little work do you think should be done for a realistic build?

if you're done with being gangstalked, you can gladly share some of your own XJ insights.

I know, I want to move but haven't decided on a destination yet, want to go somewhere out west the Rockies are the promised land. My parents would probably follow me at some point but I would ultimately be moving out there alone and trying to build a social life which I've never been good at. At least then I could probably meet people into offroading and other activities I like
