Were these automatic/push button fuses common in western, US cars specifically or were they a thing at all?I'm trying to look for some either aftermarket or non fucked ones to replace my original rusty ones with.

>>28063723You’ve got a short somewhere. Get a voltmeter. Breakers are meant to protect the wiring. The rule of thumb if it trips twice, don’t reset it again.
>>28063727I'm leaning more to the "it's just fucked" side as I replaced it temporarily with a fuse holder and a 10 amp fuse which didn't burn during the trip, the thermal fuses were 15 amp if memory serves.Still not ruling the possibility out and I'm going to unfuck the electrics of this thing anyway at some point, will rewire the whole thing anew as the old harness is barely holding on and has some dodgy repairs done to it along the years.

>>28065792incredibly based. i dislike convertibles but that's just my opinion. you have nice cars.
>>28064956Throw it away. Seriously. The coating on the slides is absolutely critical and if it's damaged in any way, which it usually is, the thing will never be able to generate enough control vacuum to pull the slides open properly. That causes it to run lean because the mixture needles are attached to the slides. The control vacuum is similar in concept to the Holley vacuum operated secondaries in that it's generated solely by air velocity through the carb so the signal is low compared to manifold vacuum, Pic related is how they commonly look with heavy wear to the sealing surface. That happens because what they seal to are steel rollers located under that cover on top that says Motorcraft.>>28064979That car probably had a 5.0 VV/MCU (Mixture Control Unit) and AOD
>>28065835Thanks, man. Truth be told, I prefer a hardtop myself, but Dad loved the convertibles.
>>28064956>>28065844you could try a rochester varijet, its basically half of a quadrajet, common on foreign vehicles but i know here they at least came on the early 2.8's. the small primary and large secondary functions in the same effect with less moving parts, i don't think you're going to find a smaller venturi driveable on the street. in any case it has more support. A long time ago I found out E7's fit fords 255ci v8, allowing you to put aftermarket intakes on it, you could throw in a 347 stroker crank to yield (iirc) 289ci, more square and efficient than a 302, i think 4.7 chrysler pistons fit the smaller bore and stroker pin height with low tension rings

>>28065947yeah people forget that the fleet trucks used to be 300ci fords and they would frequently die, however I did hear stories about coworkers just revving them to the moon every chance they got back in the good old days before they had shit monitoring the drivers
Buddy cucked out on trading me his javelin plus cash for my Camaro, so now I’m back in the market for early 70s GMs, possibly a nova
>>28066020Get a 73-74 Nova, still cheap and not too different than the 68-72, just put some fiberglass bumpers on it, window change isnt that noticeable.
All else being equal, would going to dual exhaust increase fuel economy if I drive the exact same way as before?
>>28066489It would increase coolness and that’s all that matters my friend
>>28066489slightly. You'd gain better with long tubes, especially if it's a Ford FE.
>>28065947i have a mass air 96 300. it sucks. i fixed a bunch of vacuum leaks and it has throttle response, but its what you would expect being told its 150hp, i have no idea what ford people smoke they'll defend this eternal rental car brand to the death >>28065982i had a 80 F250 with the 300, between the clutchless fan and 1bbl carter, on the floor it wouldnt even rev to 4500, pretty safe to just stand on it all day carbs are a more perfected technology, its just not possible to provide the wide scope of performance AND economy that efi provides, you put a lil bitty 1bbl on that 300 its going to get better fuel economy than efi, especially with computer controlled jets
>>28066555Long tubes on an FE in a truck can be a pita though.I have to unbolt my starter and passenger header then play a game of tetris to get either one out.And if you don't heat shield your starter it will cook because the header wraps around it like OJ's glove. They sure do look cool and sound badass though, I wouldn't change mine.Heaven forbid its in a mustang or torino though, you'll scrape on driveways and every speed bump you encounter, even at stock ride height
>>28066616The mass air was much more responsive..The speed density I had I bought off the lot in '86. So it wasn't some ragged out pos. That was how it behaved from the factory with 5 miles on the odometer. Was still a good truck and with the 4 speed.
>>28066626I haven't had the pleasure of driving a SD truck yet. Someone had broken the EGR pipe and then welded it and it rusted through so it was sucking atmosphere. You'd be making throttle adjustments in quarter pedal increments then backing off when it responded
>>28066489Back in the early 80's, Ford found that adding dual exhaust to the Mark VI improved fuel economy by 1.5 mpg, which was huge from a manufacturer's standpoint.Impossible to say for yours though since we know nothing about it but I will opine that you're not likely to see enough gains to make it financially worthwhile in anything less than decades. If you want the twice pipes, do it because you want to not because of some practical reason.
>>28066489>>28066542>>28066555>>28066903Nothing sounds better than a V8 with true duals.Just to start a fight, the flathead ford is the best sounding V8, therefore making it the best sounding engine.

quadrajet throttle shaft is wobbling a bit. maybe 0.005" I really wanted to get this rebuilt today because I'm running out of warm days to work.for those with experience with this - how much driveability am I going to lose if i don't address it?where i live it's going to be a week at least before more parts arrive
>>28068932ok after thinking about it for a while, i'm going to do picrel type of repair. basically making a teflon bushing. might not be "proper" but it's good enough for this truck.
>>28069275A lot of Holleys have that from the factory
>>28068932They all do that. If you have complete control over the idle mixtures, meaning that you can make it too rich too, then I wouldn't worry about it. Eventually the wear will increase to the point that you can't get a decent idle due to the vacuum leak, or the throttle sticks with a high idle, and that's where action needs to be taken.
>>28069361that's good to know>>28069456the wobble is more like 0.020" actually, so it needs to be addressed. unfortunately ali express has the teflon sheet for $10 to my door while everywhere else is 4x the price with the same shipping timeone more setback

How do I suck less at welding? All my welds look like fat logs of shit, too cold/little power?
>>28070813I ain't no welder, but did you clean the surfaces you're trying to weld at all? Shit looks crusty as fuck, it needs to be nearly spotless for a nice weld.
>>28070829This and he will need to turn up heat.
>>28070813I honestly can't tell if this is stick or mig.Too much filler for the amount of heat being applied/ not enough heat for the amount of filler being applied.Welding isn't "hot gluing 2 pieces together".You need to heat the parts (with the arc) so that the plate becomes molten and the filler flows into it and they become one.The positioning/angle of the filler defines the direction the heat from the arc is focused- its not a sewing machine that you just run parts through, you need to SEE the metal getting hot and "accepting" the filler as you're laying the bead (both sides of the weld).
>>28070871ContYou're tying to do get this.
>>28070895Not this
>>28070871It's MIG, I've gone with the principle "it the metal glows, it's probably welded."I'm not soldering the metal with the weld, or at least trying, I'm trying to melt the metal to each other itself and apparently failing.
>>28070953Turn up your heat and turn down your wire speed. Get two pieces for a practice run.Don't run a bead, just focus on a "spot" weld.Angle the torch more to one piece and watch it heat and accept the filler then rotate over to the other piece. With the high heat /low wire speed you can also just sit on one spot on a single plate so you can see how the plate heats up and accepts the filler. You're not trying to weld right now, you're trying to recognize the state of the plate and when it's at temp and the filler starts to blend.
>>28070813Get flat pieces of metal and practice running beads. Make sure the metal is clean.
>>28071001I was suspecting that my wire feed was fucked, but didn't think of turning it down at the tile because am a retard.I swear I can weld better with the welder at work as it has a stepless power adjustment knob, meanwhile the one I have at home is a really weird 7 step system as in the power has 7 positions, it automatically lowers or increases the wire feed when you flick the power up or down, then the wire feed knob is free rotating from was it 12 to 12, no idea what is more and what is less.Basically I've no idea how to use my own welder, it's like from the early 80s West Germany, so that probably doesn't help
>>28070813
>>28071001You will get to a point that another second or 2 of filler doesn't "mound", where everything is just blending together and the filler is just a nice smooth "pond", right before it collapses onto the floor in a molten shitfest.Try to make that molten shitfest. You can't know where the limit is u less you go past it.
>>28071023Acetylene sucks.Might as well get a forge and anvil and hammer out your parts.

>>28071212Inside what? A basement, a garage? Large amounts of solvent, no matter what it is, indoors is a super bad idea. What are you cleaning?
>>28071320inside my garage. i'm cleaning a carburetor and associated linkages. I used simple green and a hot water rinse. it worked decent.
>>28071323You can buy carb cleaner in a gallon bucket with a dip strainer included. It stinks so do it just outside a door.
Hey /CCG/, thought I'd give an update. Won't namefag since I haven't seen any in this thread.>Obviously survived lung cancer >Galaxie is fucked. Story time.>November 2023, dropped off galaxie for a motor rebuild. Paid $2500 for friends and family discount. Few weeks later paid $1100 for all new suspension (was going coilovers).>Get hit with cancer, kinda lose track and motivation for projects, bigger fish to fry>August rolls around and I ask shop what's the status>Get told motor is ready to be dropped in, you'll have the car next week>Get told same bullshit every other week since magically something always came up>Try to be understanding, got other shit too.>October hits and I tell him enough is enough, have it ready next week. Swing by and still find my car in the same spot since November. Tell owner I'll be back tomorrow with a tow truck to get car and motor.>Show up the next day and owner throws a bitch fit, but finally get my car back.>Check car and find that the old motor is exactly the same in the car, as well as old suspension. Except now it won't start and brakes are shot.>Get pissed but ask owner wtf>Says they actually built a a different 390 and were gonna swap it. But it's in the back of the shop so I'll have to come back tomorrow to get it.>I've been calling/going by every other day trying to get that supposed motor (just writing off that suspension money at this point just to be done with it)>Finally owner gets too pissy with me and calls me annoying and wanting instant gratification Cause wanting shit you paid for a year ago is instant? He refuses to refund the $2500 cause "already built the motor" and says he'll refund the he $1100Big surprise I haven't gotten shit back and he keeps blowing me off, refusing to talk to me until I ask his secretary for all my paperwork.(Part 1/2)
>>28071379(Part 2/2)But I'm not gonna roll over and let him win like he thinks - taking the fucker to small claims if not more>Have text messages and recordings of conversation of him/employees acknowledging motor/suspension that I paid for>Have bank statements of me paying shop>Car is at another shop (family one, would've taken it to him originally but he doesn't do rebuilds) getting assessed for all damage and seeing if the OG 390 can be saved.>Have indicators that the car was flooded while in the shops care (exhaust was full of water, trunk has loads of surface rust inside and the sealled toolbox that was in the truck shows signs of water damage and full of mold. So I'll either be taking him to court, or having my insurance go after him. If the OG 390 is fucked, I'm gonna have current shop just throw in a 5.0 and aod or something. Honestly dont care, just want my damn car back.Oh and I put Audi R8 coils in my Nissan and it magically fixed all the issues I had with it. Something the shitty shop couldn't figure out but said they replaced all coils and plugs when I first took it to them - so that was another fucking lie.So when this is all said and done, I'll be making it my life's mission to ruin this places reputation. Every place I can leave a review, every car group I can join and bash it, and every car meet Ill go to. Hell, I'm even thinking of renting the billboard in front of it just to say that he's a thief.

Apart from an emergency alternator replacement that left me stranded, I haven't been to a shop since I dropped off the Galaxie. I've been going hard mode and figuring out my JDM and unfucking the diesel farm truck we were gifted. Managed to literally tear my left hand open while putting on coilovers.

I tried to help but he died before my wife could get a hold of 911. Kinda turned me off from the idea.
I would never let anyone work on any of my family's vehicles.

And the twink still sucking on his grandpa's tit?I also rediscovered BaT and the no reserve section.. really makes me want to sell the Galaxie just to have the spare room/cash for the thrill of bidding on some of those cars that went for way less than I expected.

>>28071660After the lawsuit. I'm flying out to the West Coast for 2 weeks and have a tow company on standby to grab the motor in case he decides to do the right thing.I'll still dox him though, just not before I either get my money/motor or pass the point of no return.
>>28071632>what happened to s10fagthe filter was highly effective so he dropped trip and faded away. fuck everyone posting non-classics btw
Why is it that when I look at a modern car, high milage makes me weary, but idgaf about milage on a classic car?
>>28071697Because a Classic is a 50+ year old POS that has been beaten to hell and back already and probably needs a rebuild on that motor and transmission anyway. In comparison to a modern vehicle, it's also remarkably simple to fix.

I went through a couple work trucks rapidly, scrapped the rest, and now i have a pretty uneventful car life for the first time in 5 years. My wife is also 31. Pretty much everyone is tired of what normally goes on here. Drac just posted last thread about a cadillac he picked up. Coastfag discovered his ass is alergic to cum and after taking it for 40 years he developed some sort of cancer, idk where he is. Goose got clowned for repetitively asking dumber questions than coastie and might have gotten lost in a haynes manual. A machine shop I found wants $800, but will return a fully assembled short block with a quote of 3 weeks. I asked if they would do less work and they said no.
>>28071621i would go with whatever 3800 car you can find before i go with some even older v8 barge, and get some winter tires, /ccg/ is not a winter beater friendly zone tall gears and low torque is good for slick surfaces, make sure whatever you buy, if you put it in 2nd that it starts in 2nd, lots of stuff like old cherokees will start in 1st even if you put them in 2nd and that kills your ability to finely modulate throttle. a torquey v8 or diesel that spins the wheels at idle is the opposite of good in this situation, the less momentum you have to stop or turn is better too, almost entirely the opposite of anything /ccg/. Other than that, tires.
>>28071407>>28071379i know how you always wanted fuel injection and overdrive on that car. a 5.0 and aod is going to kill how it currently feels to drive. why not a 460 and e40d, surely that can fit in whatever space the current fuckhuge drivetrain occupies. gas obs trucks are cheap donors and we seem to have some regulars that are EEC experts too
>>28072751Tbh I don't think I hopped up 5.0 would be a disappointment compared to the lazy 390 that I know, but I'm still looking for motors in case my 390 is toast. With that said I have a few options.>Every shop I called that does rebuilds (which aren't much when it comes to classic cars) gave me a base quote for $4700 to $10k for a rebuild.>Unless the shop that currently has it has a lead on some motors that are cheaper and ready to drop in, everything on marketplace that doesn't look like it just came from a sitting in someone's yard is gonna run $2500+ for just a 5.0, 390s are closer to $4k+>I did find a place 1.5 hours away that'll do a basic LS/4L60 swap for $5500 with a 2 week turnaround. And finally >Found a 60k mile Toyota 1GZ V12 with 6spd auto for $2900.I know it's sacrilege to put a Toyota motor in a Ford, but V12....

>>28071632Still here sporadically, still got my camaro>still Snoop Dogg and D.R.E.It’s on non-open rn because of (((smog))) but it still runs and drives. Almost traded it to my buddy for a 68 javelin plus some cash and he was gonna take it with him out of state where it could run free, but he backed out and still wants to sell me his javelin though. Don’t really want to have 2 cars, don’t feel like cutting up both to stuff my GM shit in an AMC, and if I sell the Camaro and just try to work on the AMC I feel like parts availability would be a huge pain in the ass compared to GM. I’ll probably get like an early 70s gm and just swap everything into that and junk the 79 shell.

Idk what y'all are bitching about. I daily drove my RWD cars on icy roads and through snow with no issue back in Detroit. Sudden stops were a bit of an issue, but 4wd/AWD ain't gonna help there.

>>28073560with my iron block i just winged it, assumed it was straight since iron is much more resistant to warping than an aluminium head is, and used nothing but a razor scraper for hours. there wasn't much else to do at the time but wait for the shop to recondition the warped head. seemed to have worked because i ran it hard for 30k miles no problems besides being a little thirsty on oil.
Got myself some premium audio for my project car. Also makes my zoomer friends absolutely seething because I keep buying ancient shit with no Bluetooth, no RCA or any fancy connections, at best a tape deck
>>28073621Lol>>28073624>>28073637Yeah I know what anon means, I'm not in the city, and I live in a town where they don't clear the street sometimes.A lot of southerners don't understand that a snowy road when not cleared (or not cleared fast enough) get compounded into an ice layer that is so compact and slick it won't melt on nice days. Then it turns into ruts as cars go over it.You can have 6 inch ruts from the top of the ice layer down the the shallowest part of the ice layer. When you drive your wheels can't always climb out of the ruts making it hard to drive. In these cases I just put two wheels on the sidewalk and send it.

>>28073298>I’ll probably get like an early 70s gm and just swap everything into that and junk the 79 shell.Don't do it.You've got your Beast. Love it.
>>28074306I think you might have an fm modulator confused with an fm transmitter. A transmitter is the shitty sounding dollar store POS that goes in to the cig lighter. A modulator is plugged in to the coax between the antenna and the radio and sounds a lot better. Or you could be right and I just have lower sound quality standards than you lol
>>28073616An 80s usdm mini truck will often have a gutless 2.8ish V6, 4wd, tall gears, and automatic. Should be perfect for snow traction. S10. Blazer. Bronco ii, ranger. The JDM ones often forfeit the automatic with 4wd and have very short gears for 3rd world markets. Many see the small v6 as undesirable so you may get a deal
>>28074383No I meant the FM modulator, plugs straight to the antenna jack behind the radio, but it had bluetooth instead of aux. Ordered it for my BMW, didn't like it at all due to the chinglish when you connected and the sound quality was just absolutely atrocious, it was like 10 bucks off ebay I think.I went the difficult route and instead wired a bluetooth receiver to the head units CD changer pins to get bluetooth, cost me like a 100 bucks, but no more chinglish and the sound quality is perfect.
Went to take the Vanden Plas for a drive, and the clutch pedal felt like it was Bluetooth. Took a look under the car, and there's a small but noticeable patch of fluid on the ground under where the slave cylinder is, so 15 minutes of air time and sure enough, the inside of this thing is shagged. Must have been weeping past the seal for quite some time, because this things is pretty grim.
>>28074606that bore looks fubar

So it's not ccg related, but the 302 is out. After driving this (im on Cali for a week so I decided to splurge on the rental) and having all the instant power to all 4 wheels... Oof. Gas milage is comically bad and it rides horribly for a 6 figure vehicle but God damn am I in love.
