If 60s cars were considered classics by the 90s why do people have such are hard time calling 90s cars classics today? Its the same time span, are people just in denial about their age?
>>28074662Because they were pre-emissions.
>>28074662florida is 30 years so currently '94 and older. seems fair
>>28074662(mid) 80's and 90's cars, for all their merits compared to the nuboxes of today, are still plastic shitboxes with lots of electronics. >>>Dealing with this right now with a C4. It's a creampuff, garage kept, 14k miles, dealer serviced, driven once a week 'round the block etc etc. Despite being 30 years old it's effectively a 2 year old car in terms of weather exposure and mechanical wear. Despite all this, every time I need to replace some aging speaker or brake booster or wrap the interior to get rid of that shitty GM dulso I always break some brittle piece of plastic. There's always some small electrical gremlin, whether it's the ASR, or fuel gauge, or the digidash. >>>There's also the angle of everyday usability. You get in, and drive, and if not for the rattling on bumpy roads, or higher road noise on I35W, it feels like a modern car. You get in. Turn the key. No gas pumping, it's port fuel injected. Electric rad fan. Car chimes at you to put on the seatbelt. Cruise control. CD goes in the CD slot. ABS werx, ASR werx (sometimes). Even though this thing is 10 years older than me, it will always feel like last year's model, as will nearly every car from ~1991 and onwards.>>>Probably going to sell it for more than I got it for and get a C3, T-top Cordoba, etc instead. In the end, malaise era cars may become the last true "classic" cars.
>>28074662Because the 90's feels more "dated" than "classic", I think, though that is changing now we're coming into 2025. Cars have gotten nicer since the 90's, sure, but I don't think the fundamentals have changed that much. 90's was kind of the advent of "modern" tech as we know it. ECU's, EFI, headlights that aren't sealed beam, 5 and 6 speed gearboxes... The list goes on. Fuck, a lot of 60's cars didn't even use radial tyres. Now, compare 90's tech with modern stuff, and the biggest difference really is just infotainment and maybe emissions tech. A 60's car really does feel old and mechanical (obviously) compared to a 90's car, but a 90's car is similar enough to what we have that it doesn't feel as large a step away. I think it's only in the last few years that 90's cars have really started to cross that threshold from "dated" to "classic", and that's only because of a significant change in automotive tech. Cars are now rolling super computers, with 10 speed auto transmissions, programmable options, and constant bloops and bleeps. It's changing the way we experience driving, really. It's like TV tech, really. Going from a CRT to an LCD is a game changer, but an LCD to LED? Not so much.
>>28074662Doesn't seem to be the case to me, everyone acknowledges my 90s cars as classics, though I do drive interesting cars not stuff that was boring then and is still boring now.
>>28074724Yet my ‘92 C4 is still considered by all normies I meet as a “classic”. I think it’s really more of a question of how removed it is to modern design trends. C4s, especially the early ones, have reached that point now. They look distinctly 80s, in a good way and non-dated way.
>>2807466260s cars by the 90s all *looked* like lumbering, poor handling, gas sucking beasts from a bygone era that were already classics. Nowadays, with the average age of cars getting older and older, something from the '90s doesn't feel as antiquated. At the same time, if you're a poorfag just looking for a decent, economical A-B ride then late '90s 4cyl imports that get 30+mpg (and equally indestructible, yet marginally less-efficient V6 domestics) are all still some of the cheapest cars that you can get.On a similar note, overall car designs haven't changed that much either. You won't fool anyone into thinking a 1997 is a 2017, for instance, but some lipstick (yes, rice in many cases) in the form of things like projector headlights, LEDs, carplay/android head units, and even newer OEM takeoff wheels (tasteful, not 20" wheels on a Corolla) can really shave some years off of a car.Maybe an even older oldfag that drove through the '90s might know better, but I don't think a poorfag looking for a sensible, used A-B commuter in the '90s would've been picking up anything from the '60s unless they're already some sort of enthusiast.>>28074737This kinda nails the sentiment I'm going for. Throwing a CD player and radial tires into some '60s car in the during the '90s doesn't really compare to adding a backup camera, carplay, projector headlights and a full LED retrofit kit to some '90s shitbox now IMO.
>>28074737>>28074760i think these are great answers. 90s cars just last such a long time that people basically take them for granted for much longer than previously. I constantly forget that the newest xv20 camry is 22 years old now.
>>28074662Cars last longerIts not nearly as impressive to have a 90s car today as 60s car in the 90s
>>2807466260s cars in the 90s were impractical, romanticized symbols of opulence, coming from a different era of history, an era when resources felt infinite. hero cars from the era got stored in garages and driven thrice a year because the honda was a better car in every way, and shitters got scrapped en masse as they were impractical to run, with the few survivors getting upgrades to make them closer to hero car specs later down the line by those who got priced out of the actual hero cars.90s cars in the 20s are eternal underdogs. aside from a few hero cars, they are for the most part about achieving more with less, in ways that are beyond most modern offerings. they are practical, reliable choices that keep running and outperforming modern cars, made in massive numbers and still largely around today. hero cars like skyline climbed in value massively recently, but a 90s corolla will always be cheap and practical, there's no scarcity and nothing romantic about it.
>>28074798>a 90s corolla will always be cheap and practical, there's no scarcity Give it 10 years and that’s going to change
>>28075030It happened to the Escort here in the UK. Can't believe this shit is £4,000. It's pure poverty spec, it doesn't even have a fucking tacho.
Because 90s cars were fucking garbage compared to 60s cars.
>>28075053UK car market is imploding because ev mandates right now
>>28074662Boomers are retarded. That's literally it.
>>28075184Boomers aren't the bad guys, your fags are just bitter and hate your father
>>28075095You mean the 60s cars that had to have a complete engine rebuilt at 105k miles?
>>28075190My dad's Gen-X.
>>28074737This. In the movie The Deer Hunter, one dude had a white '59 cadillac and they treated that car like a beater. Movie was made in '78 but took place in '68 but I don't think they were disrespecting it for being 10 or 20 years old, i think its just '50s "old people car" stigma just like guys today will disrespect Buicks, Olds and Crown Vics. I drive a car from '03 and its most certainly not considered a a classic
>>28075171Not rally. Most other cars are still cheap, it's just ford fags being ford fags. Brother just bought a 2013 Fiesta for £600.
>>28075865Not *really
>>28074724that's just C4 things. An 80s or 90s German car won't have this
>>28074751I think the c4 amd the 3rd gen F bodies are going to grow in popularity. The retro futuristic trend is basically rehashed 80s exterior design. Which is neat imo, hard angular lines, boxy appearance and amber LEDs are dope.
70s Fairlane
90s FairlaneI think the pictures explain why 90s cars are not classic
>>28075973Forgot pic
>>28075975There's much more plastic in the 90s. The mouldings all start to curl and become brittle and there's no replacing a lot of it. Whereas the ZH is mostly steel.
>>28075987Mines 20% bog but yeah the steel is thicc and the chrome is plentiful.
90s classics require a special taste.
>>28076001nice caravan, does the air horn still work?
>>28075947My 1995 M3 was exactly what he was describing, except I owned it 10 years ago. Sold it for a massive profit the second time the VANOS took a shit.
>>28075192Im talking about sovl, little zoomie
>>28074662Because 'classic' is not synonymous with 'old'. It means "something that is class-defining". 90s cars are deep in the dark ages of motoring, so they will never be classics no matter how old they get.
>>28074662Millenials are manchildren denying their age
