Questions that don't deserve their own thread. Here's mine: are most gaskets you buy for exhausts these days asbestos free ? Just metal lined with graphite and glass fiber ? I ordered a cat converter from magnaflow and I'm wondering if the gaskets they sent are clean. Ofc the gaskets sucked anyways and I didn't start to think about what they were made of until I was changing them for felpro.

Ok guys, having a little trouble hunting down what I assume is an electrical fault, any ideas?>2005 Nissan Stagea (basically a g35 or 350z)>Fender indicators not working>Other indicators working normally>Fuses fine>Bulbs fine>Connections fineBut it's both sides, and I can't for the life of me find the issue, the last thing that happened to it was when the local Ford dealer fixed my ignition barrel and after that my my right turn arrow in the dash only works when it feels like it when the blinkers are on. Would that be related?
>>28080582explain the problem further. Your front turn indicators are no longer turning on?
>>28080662Fronts are fine, rears are fine, ones on the fender (both sides) under the mirrors aren't, no fast flashing on the ones that are still working
>>28080582>>28080665When you turn on your hazard flashers-4 ways, does it work fine then? If so, then it’s probably a bad connection with the stalk you flip for the turn signal. Especually if dude was in there for the ignition barrel. Could be the whole stalk assembly going bad, could be whatever plug goes into the assembly. At the very least if you’re not gonna go chasing power with your multimeter, pull the cover off the steering column and look for the connection going into the turn signal stalk, check that and make sure it’s all tight and clean and the wires aren’t damaged or pinched from dude being in there for the ignition.
>>28080716That's the annoying part, even with hazards on then fronts and rears work fine and fenders still don't. I was hoping I wasn't going to have to start digging around with a multimeter but it looks like I'm going to have to.God I hate electrical work, at least my daily never has issues
Do "vr"/narrow v engines inherently breathe worse than normal ones? From the schematics it would seem the manifold pipes would have to be narrower than normal at points. From what I've seen the volkswagen group vr engines aren't particularly peaky. They don't rev very high.
>>28080228Whats the best way to go about privately selling a vehicle and getting the best price for it?Facebook marketplace, autotrader, craigslist?I have a 2003 GLI with 225k miles on it in thats in ok condition that I'm hoping to get 2-3k for. I feel super guilty because its served me so well, but I need a pickup now.Any advice is appreciated!
>>28080962I have the car below and the VR6 24 valve engine has been amazing for the time I've had it. Thankfully have never had any major issues. It's not very peak but rock solid, linear power - I never beat on it hard but it was so fun to drive. Change the stock pipes and enjoy the music that comes out of that engine, it's spectacular.
>>28080228Asbestos is not going to kill you from under the car. Brakes are a problem because of the dust. Only friable asbestos is deemed dangerous. It takes forty years to give you cancer. I also included a pic of all the kids suffering from lead poisoning.
I have a stripped locking wheel nut on my car that I can't get off. it looks something like this. it's those notches on the inside edge that are stripped so the key has no grip.I've searched all the hacks to get it off and nothing works. I can't fit a nut extractor between the alloy and the nut because it's so wide. can't chisel down into the edge to turn it because it has a spinning collar. is my only remaining option to drill out the stud and fit a new one? I did damage the end slightly so that might need doing anyway.if I took it to a garage, what would they do? because if it's the exact same thing I may as well do it myself. I also want to avoid looking like a retard in front of them (even though I am one)I obviously will be taking off all the locking nuts when this is over and never using them again. lesson learned.
>>28081428Is it completely rounded off or are there any of the splines left (did you maybe just round off the top half of them leaving the base intact?). If the stud is more recessed into the nut than the one pictured, i.e flush with the surface or recessed into it you might be able to either weld the spinning collar to the inside and chisel it off that way, or if you can find a socket that just fits over the stud you could try welding the socket to the collar/nut and using that to ge some leverage on it. If you do that naturally use as hot a setting as you can, and maybe put something in there to protect the wheel if you have space. That said, I think the easiest way out at this point is to drill it, or if you don;t want to risk it take it to a garage, they'll have done it hundreds of times before.
>>28081503the splines are still there, they're just all fucked up and deformed. even more so after I tried putting a flathead against them and hammering it to shift the bolt, to no success.I don't have access to a welder either, so looks like drilling it is. I'm not worried about being able to get it out that way, just a matter of getting the new one in. checked a video of my car and there looks to be enough space to hammer the old one out, so I should be good.
>>28081679if the splines are there maybe try hammering the socket on there, fair warning it's going to fuck up the socket so make sure you've a spare or have taken the others out already. you'll need to hit it with some force but if you can get it seated it should at least serve to get that one out
>>28081428That sounds like a nightmare.
Thinking about getting a used Honda. Everything seems good with the car, I looked it over, I test drove it and it seems good. I'm not mechanic however, just hobbyist tier at wrenching. My issue is, on one year on the carfax the previous owner managed to drive this thing 30,000 miles. I'm wondering if that's enough to walk away. I don't know if the guy had a crazy commute that year or if he was doing uber or something. But I'm suspicious he wasn't taking good care of it if it did that many miles the year before he sold it. The other years have more normal miles.Thoughts?tl;dr - used car has regular history except for the last year the dude owned it, in which he drove the absolute fuck out of it and then traded it in
the 2.2 in the S10 is backed by a 4l60e, the same one used in 1500 trucks. people have turbo'd the 2.2 and it isnt really a performance engine, but what stops you from putting a turbo 2.2 into a 1500 and having a pseudo ecoboost? it would function under the same concept and improve mileage while maintaining performance right?
>>28080228If one of my caliper pistons is locked up (won’t go in far enough to put new pads in) how do I go about fixing this? If it’s just off track a bit will the force of pressing the brake get it back right or do I need to do more work?
>>28080228>Here's mine: are most gaskets you buy for exhausts these days asbestos free ? Just metal lined with graphite and glass fiber ?Yes they're asbestos free, because it's cheaper to not have to do the extra safety steps at the factory.Small exposure to a few strands of asbestos in some exhaust gaskets isn't going to give you cancer. Asbestos really isn't that dangerous. People who got cancer were people who worked with it and breathed it day in and day out for decades (people who built boilers, worked in demolition, mechanics who would change 5 sets of brake pads a day for years and blow every one out with compressed air breathing the dust cloud, etc.
>>28081181Sadly everybody is on marketplace, so you'll have to list it there even though it sucks shit.Look at everyone's profile before replying to their message. If they're niggers or otherwise questionable, just block them without responding. If you respond they can leave negative feedback even if you tell them to fuck off. I have dozens of negative feedbacks from niggers I told to fuck off before I learned this trick.
>>28081946Rear or front
>>28081428if you can fit a nut extractor in there you might be able to pound one on with a hammer and get it to gripdoes the car drive as it is? try driving it to a tire shop, they probably deal with this shit a lot and might have a tool or technique that can do it. they'd most likely look at it for free and only charge you if they can get it off.
>>28081920I wouldn't worry about it at all. As long as he was maintaining it, doing uber isn't harder on a car than just driving it normally. Just calculate the value based on its current mileage.
Forever totally unique dash cam question.Seems pretty easy to find "full featured" dash cams with wifi, a screen, an app, a capacitor, and all the detection shit, but I'm specifically trying to find>dual sd card slots or internal storage PLUS an sd card slot>something without a touchscreen if it already has an app available>the primary components associated with data/processing being someplace other than the main front camera>Maybe enough channels to record the sides of the car, even if it's just pointed in the general direction of the side mirrors>bonus points if any cloud bullshit can be tied to a personal/home serverI'm partially concerned about data security surrounding wireless shit, but I doubt anything manages to be concerned with that. Everything being cabled is preferred, but I'm certain this is probably going to be the case of anon finding out everyone copied each other and nobody is doing anything different.>>28081181Facebook or craigslist still. No idea if autotrader is any good, I barely see private listings there.Dealership is only going to give you $1k for it on tradein and either send it to auction or put it up for market price plus tip after they vacuum the interior.
>>28081920Did he get regular oil changes ?
>>28081946If it's a rear caliper, you might need that little cube tool to twist it as it retracts, check the service procedure for your car to see if that's required. Also make sure the parking brake isn't hanging up and holding it slightly closed.Otherwise if it's legit fucked, just replace the caliper, it'll never work right even if you can free it up.
>>28081994Thanks, anon.
>>28082004I’m kinda tempted to just replace them, that’s what I did with the front ones. On the passenger side the rear pistons went in perfectly smooth, driver’s side it’s a huge pain. I guess there’s more gunk the closer you are to the master cylinder.
I want to refresh all the suspension bits of my carIt drives fine as as but some boots are starting to deteriorate. If i have no issues with my current shocks/struts am i fine to reuse the springs on new strut assemblies or buy new springs? I wanted to go from my stock struts to some bilsteins while maintaining stock ride height because they are a decent price.
What's better for off-roading/rallying, more torque or more RPM?
>>28082157>If i have no issues with my current shocks/struts am i fine to reuse the springs on new strut assemblies or buy new springs? If the car is at an appropriate ride height now and the springs aren't broken, replacing them won't improve anything.
>>28081937like most what ifs, youre bounded usually by time, effort, tools, or money, or some combination of the 4. but for fun lets compare the 3.5 f150 to the coyote. you gain 1 mpg city/highway with the 3.5 over the coyote, for a much more complicated engine that’s theoretically less reliable. the splits are 17/22 and 18/23the tradeoff you propose is that youre putting in an amalgam of different parts (turbo, exhaust, ECU, engine internals, transmission) that all have to work together in harmony to do better than a crate LS in terms of MPG, power, and reliability. so its a very complicated problem to solve when you could just solve it way more easily by just dropping a V8 into it. the amount of power required to move a vehicle doesn’t change much from engine to engine. but what RPM range that engine has to operate in will definitely change, and 4cyl and 6cyl engines will generally have to spin faster than V8s to make the same power.
I am 100% certain that my next car will be a Ford Probe but I cannot for the life of me decide whether it should be the first gen or second gen.Technically the second gen is better in every single measurable way but the first gen looks slightly cooler to me (not that the second gen looks bad at all) and the interior is a million times better because 80s shitty plastic always beats 90s shitty plastic. But then there's the engine, trying to find the first gen with anything other than the 4cyl turbo is very difficult but the second gen regularly appears on sale with the 2,5 V6.I truly don't know which one to choose anymore. Is there some standout model in the first and second generations that's exceptionally reliable or anything like that?
>>28080773Pull apart the steering column and look for physical damage or shitty connections if they stopped working right after the ignition work. If nothing is obvious, get in there with a meter. Also fwiw, PowerProbes are so nice for tracing down those issues because of the ability to jump power and ground to any connection, and there’s a lot of Chinese knockoffs for quite cheap. I would be breaking that out and poking around all over the car if it were my project. Isolate wherever you can trace power to, or whatever spot you probe power to and can’t get a flash, and then dig deeper and figure it out. Just be careful if you get a probe and go anywhere close to ECU stuff,>>28080962Not inherently. There’s a lot of issues to overcome, but the intake manifold could come up over the top of the cylinder next to it if necessary. I’m sure it takes a little more engineering to get it right than a proven V6 or I6
>got a car back from mechanic, gearbox exploded in another country (had this one coming, gearbox was in terrible, terrible shape ever since i bought it)>1200km drive home>1000km into the trip, clutch falls apart during ordinary highway drive in one gear, car is kinda stuck in gear>best towing option i found was 1300eur for 200km, i learned to hate germany that day>insurance only offered this shitty option where they put you in a hotel and then they tow your car in a month or so, in bulk with other cars (again, 200km of a trip left)>middle of the night, big brain engaged>if clutch is stuck, it should hold once in gear, so, i might get it moving by using my gear synchro to speed up, then it'll pop into gear and off i go>pushed the car as fast as i can, then started gently* pushing towards the gear so use synchro>all good, car speeds up, actually clicked into gear>oh fuck yeah>added throttle, clutch fell apart completely, whateverAnd so, I've got a car from mechanic again. Clutch is solid now, but I have a hard time popping that gear in. Do you think I've ruined a synchronizer completely just by doing this one dumb ass start attempt? Are those things sensitive enough to get completely ruined by doing that just one single time? Or should I consider a possibility that something else is wrong, and that's why my gear is giving me trouble? It's not grinding gears, it just feels as if you're blocked off from putting the gear in sometimes.
never had a car with a front facing scoop on bonnetrear cowl got rid of a tonne of heat at high speed but didnt do much at lowIf i put a Territory style scoobi front scoop on my shitbox like pic related would it help?Already got washers on the bonnet arms and hidden cowl between the bonnet and firewall
is it fine to go from D to N and back on a slushbox while driving
The current wheels on my car are 215/5017 and I have a set of snow tires measuring 205/60R16. If I got new wheels for the snows, would they fit the vehicle? It's supposed to only be a .2 difference in diameter but I'm not sure if that would cause any issues. Or should I just get new snow tires?
>>28083021>Clutch is solid now, but I have a hard time popping that gear inStart with the simple stuff. Have someone else drive it, and don't mention the problem with the gear. See if they notice it.Because it's in your mind that there's a problem, you might be experiencing one even if it's not really there. Placebo effect in reverse.
AC stopped working and thought it was just out of refrigerant so I got a can but when I hooked it up the gauge said it was already over compressed. Is heating (read: defrogging) tied up in the same system? Not using it and wiping down the windshield is getting ineffective fast as temps are dropping
My foxbody isn't turning over anymore, cranks but no start. Check engine light is on and battery gauge on the dash is reading low power despite the fact that I just had it replaced. Anyone knows what it could be?
>>28083641Never just add refrigerant, you need to do a full diagnostic. Is the compressor kicking on? If not, is it getting voltage? if not, is that due to the low pressure switch, the high pressure switch, no power, etc. Start there and work your way down until you find the actual problem then fix that. Search car ac troubleshooting on youtube and find a good thorough procedure.
>>28083767First scan (or blink out) codes, that may tell you exactly the problem. If that doesn't, my next step would be do you hear the fuel pump priming for a second when you turn the ignition switch on? If not, see if your fuel pump is getting voltage. If so, get a fuel pressure tester and measure it at the rail, are you getting ~50 psi when you prime? If fuel seems ok, move onto spark.
>>28083799Fuel pump works, I forgot to mention the car is running rich because I had to change the injectors out a while back. I tried scanning for codes but my scanner is reading at all.
>>28083279That is mighty fine. The exact seat of the pants formula is to add ten to the first number and subtract it from the second in order to upsize one inch in wheel diameter. Works in reverse too.
>>28083277Yeah. Some say that coasting will tax the catalytic converter but they can’t prove it.
>>28081428Idk how but tire shops deal with that crap every day. I’d stick a pipe in there and weld the nut to it, protecting the wheel with a blanket or type of shield. Probably what they do is they can’t bust it off.>>28081992>>28081428Poor man’s lathe make skinny with drill and file.
trying to get this thing in driving condition. it idles all over the place and it misfires on acceleration, mostly at low rpms, when under load. above 3k rpms, it seems to run smooth. I did a tune up and it got a bit better but it's still pretty shitty. I also fixed all the exhaust leaks. wath should I check next?
>>28084479carbureted or fuel injected?
>>28084820fuel injected
>>28084822I would do in order:1) This thing will have a computer then, google how to blink trouble codes. Decent chance the trouble codes point you right to the problem2) Check for vacuum leaks, they tend to cause lean misfires at idle3) Clean your idle air control valve and throttle body thoroughly (if applicable)4) Check your fuel pressure, should be a consistent 50+ psi at the manifold. Shut the engine off, the fuel pressure shouldn't drop quickly, if it does there could be a leaking injector.
>>280848251) It has the check engine light on for knock sensor2) all the vacuum hoses need replacing. could that account for the fucked up idle?3) I need to do that. I can't find the replacement anywhere though, because I can't figure out what the part is called. it's a 4afe. apparently it's not an IACV, but an "auxiliary air valve". I think they're quite expensive. people just told me to clean it. 4) How do I check it?thanks anon :- )
>>28084849>2) all the vacuum hoses need replacing. could that account for the fucked up idle?Yes absolutely, in fact this is the most likely problem. Even a small vacuum leak can let in enough unmetered air to make it run very lean. Buy or rent a smoke machine if your able, or the poor man's version is to use an unlit propane torch along the intake manifold and vacuum lines, the engine will idle up when it sucks the propane showing you a leak.>4) How do I check it?Rent or buy a fuel injection manifold fuel pressure gauge, connect it to the rail (sometimes there's a schrader valve you can hook to, other times you have to take off the hose clamps on the fuel line and plumb it into the tubing directly). Start the engine, it should be 50+ psi while the engine is running and revving, if not you could have a weak fuel pump or clogged filter or line. Shut off the engine with it connected, it shouldn't drop more than 3-5 PSI in 5 minutes. If it does decent chance an injector is leaking excess fuel causing it to run rich.
is it ok that I crimped my fuel pump wires using butt connectors that didn't have heat shrink on them? They just have a pvc sleeve like pic related. I figured the connectors and plug for the pump itself is exposed to the gas/tank interior and is fine so I thought it would be ok.
>>28085523for clarity the wires and crimps are inside the tank right above the pump itself so are exposed to the inside of the tank and possibly gas, I dont know if the fuel level goes that high but quite possibly
>>28084371what does the torque converter n sheit think about going from N to D at speed
>>28085523That shit would make me paranoid always thinking "what if a wire pulls out an an arc is formed as it's falling and kabomo".Were they good connectors at least? And you couldn't pull it apart applying reasonable force?Even hazard freight sells decent connectors that shrink when you heat them up, and then you can even slide heat shrink over that if you want. That said, I'm also a neurotic retard who has redone jobs because my paranoia got the best of me and I wanted it perfect.
>>28083021If you didn't have to force it into gear when you did what you did and didn't feel and crunching or grinding, I really doubt the synchros/gear is ruined. Will it eventually go into that gear if you hold it against the lockout and just wait?It may go away as the clutch wears in, but probably not. Only thing I can do (short of replacing the slave and master which shouldn't be necessary) is adjusting the clutch pedal. Add a little more travel to it, could help.
>>28085797they're probably not good connectors. I bought an assorted box of butt connectors from autozone and it just so happened to include only 4 of the ones I ended up needing and they all fucking fell off. I crimped them, gave them a good tug and they held perfectly, then would just randomly slide off. I was in a spot where I literally couldn't afford to go buy more and needed the car the next day so i was like it'll be fine for now and I can fix it later. Now it's later and i'm nervous about it but I really don't want to remove my fuel pump again. I'm not as much worried about fire/explosion as the wires becoming corroded and failing leaving me stranded, but I don't know if the inside of a gas tank is an environment that breeds corrosion on bare wire?
seems legitshould I get them?
>>28084857>poor man's version is to use an unlit propane torch along the intake manifold and vacuum lines, I like that idea. I was just gonna replace all the vacuum hoses. Seems pretty easy. I just have to measure the tubes and go buy the right size tubes and replace them, right?>. If it does decent chance an injector is leaking excess fuel causing it to run rich.I do think it runs a bit richI'll look into getting that pressure gauge.tomorrow, I'm going to be getting the correct spark plug wires. Rockauto sent me the wrong ones. So maybe that will improve things somewhat. If the spark plug wires are the wrong ones (i.e., for a different car/engine), could that account for the misfires?
UKfagsI've got a rusty motorcycle frame I'm about to give up on, but I can buy a reproduction new build frame for a reasonable price. What is the crack with VINs, the DVLA and new frames? Will I have to registered it as a new motorbike? How far will the DVLA shove it's omnipresent boot up my arse if I somehow bodge the old VIN plate onto the new frame? Is there a better way?
>>28083378I'm conflicted on this one because I had someone else drive it and he says it's fine, but it's a really, really obvious issue. Sometimes it goes in smoothly, but half the time it just feels as if there's a wall, or as if i'd miss a gear so hard that i'm just completely outside of the gate where it should pop in. >>28085811It goes into gear if I hold it against the lockout and wait, yes, that's a perfect description of what happens. I'll focus on the clutch and when exactly does it engage/disengage, I'd be surprised if that would be the cause of the issue but I can see the logic. Happy to hear that synchros shouldn't completely go away just after one adventure of this sort.
>>28086395On other cars where people have experienced lockout they've sometimes fixed it by raising the clutch pedal as I've said, and sometimes depending on the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder design...modifying them. Usually the issue is they're not disengaging the clutch quick enough or some shit (like some have internal reservoir chambers for comfort reasons but then cause this problem), so they kind of weld those reservoirs shut and the clutch disengages better. I'm not suggesting this either because your setup is probably a typical one that doesn't have all that.Otherwise you may just have to live with it or change transmission fluids from non-oem to something better (which sometimes helps). Good luck b. Raise the pedal, add a little more "freeplay" in the cmc rod, see what happens. Diagnosing shit like this sucks. My car had bad 2nd gear lockout until I raised it and adjusted the pedal some. And this was only around 4k rpms and above, not like 7500 rpm lockouts or something you WOULD expect.
I don't know much about working on cars, I really only know the basics. Is it worth taking classes at my local community college or are there better places I can learn not surrounded by meth
>>28087261Start with small jobs and work your way up. Watch a video of the job being done on your car before attempting it.Chrisfix channel on youtube has a lot of really good tutorials for learning the basics.
Is the IS250 coup a good enthusiast car?
Today some girl was on my car's roof. They were schoolgirls, pretty young I'd say 10-12 ish. By the time I came from my apartment they were already gone. I live near a school which is why a lot of kids fome in the back of thr apartment block to smoke or chill .What would be the proper reaction if I catch them climbing on my roof again? They were gypsies.
The lovely Kansas wind decided to yank my door from my hand in a parking lot and decided to smack the shit out of someone else's mirror. I got quoted $2000 to fix this. Granted I don't know much about anything autobody related, but a pretty small dent with a small amount of paint? I can't help but feel I'm being screwed with.
>>28087932Tell them to get off or you'll call their parents.
>>28083641Had this happen on an Odyssey. If you get the RPM dip, it might just be the clutch failing to engage. Needs to be replaced if that's the case.
>>28087944$2000? what the fuck? for what? Are they buying an entirely new door?A door ding guy is what $200, and if you want a full door respray that's probably $500.If it's YOUR car I would hire a door ding guy and then try and find one of those guys who does touchup paint repairs. It won't be perfect but it'll be a lot cheaper.
>>28087944i'd demand they get another quote before you pay that. that would buff out from the looks of it.
Is it a bad idea to replace just the front brake pads and not the rotors? Details:I've never changed my car's brakes. I drive it gently -- I was doing the "hypermiling" stuff before I even knew that was a thing, like coasting for half a mile to a stoplight. I'm not having any noticeable problem with my brakes -- no squeaking, no throbbing, no fading, no ramming other cars in the ass. My car is 24 years old and has roughly 112K miles on it. It sat idle for around twelve years while I was out of the country. It was recently in the shop (manual transmission cable adjustment) and the guy recommended that I do the brakes, but he didn't make a big deal about it; it seemed like more of a "they're getting there but not there yet" thing, and his main concern was for the brake lines (which aren't included in his price quote).I'm thinking of doing them myself because he wants $400 per axle just to do the pads and rotors, and I can pick up either GOOD pads for $25 OR a cheap shit rotor-and-pads kit off Amazon for $80. But it would be easier if I just do the pads rather than the rotors too, and the cheap shit rotor kit has some bad reviews about warping almost as soon as they're used.So is it ok to do just the pads for now and take care of the rotors another time when I find a set with decent reviews that won't warp within weeks? I'm not asking "best practices" but rather whether this can cause problems. Thanks.
>>28088177Assuming your rotors don't have a significant lip, it's fine. That being said, unless money is an issue, I don't see why you wouldn't just do them both at the same time. It sounds like your pads still have *some* life in them, in which case replacing the pads now and then later on paring the now worn pads with new rotors seems like a dumb idea.
>>28088229Thanks, I'll pop a tire off and cop a feel.Money isn't an issue, I just don't feel comfortable with the whole process of removing everything to put rotors on. Pads don't require as much surgery. The $400 to the shop isn't so much about the cost as it is about being a cheap bastard who thinks that as an evolved tool user I should use some tools myself instead of paying someone else to do something that is described as a simple process.
has anyone else noticed that Scotty Kilmer youtube is either being throttled or maybe Kilmer has bad encoding? Kilmer always craps on EV's; could this be a youtube throttle? Lookner channel works fine at 1080, and I have high speed internet so it's not on my side. Other car repair youtubes like Vice Grip work fine at 1080p, but i have to downgrade to 144P for Kilmer. Whats up with that?
What's a good Windshield tint percentage to block bright headlights from blinding me at night? Without getting pulled over "randomly" for illegal tint.
>>28088284>Windshieldstay away from doing that. just do the sides and check you local laws. Tint place will stick with the laws unless you pay extra.
>>28088330I've done the sides just above the legal level. But what can I do about the night driving issue?
>>28088332Most cops use the TM100 tint test meter for the sides, but they need special and not common equipment for the front. Stick with the legal limit for the front. Depends on your state.mY uncle a retired cop says roll down all the windows and turn on the lights inside the car, if stopped. Turn on all the lights inside. Also turn off the radio.
Why is it so hard to find service manuals for cars online? I want to deep dive and learn as much as I can about my cars. Do you think a dealership would sell me one?
>>28088351I looked it up and all tint on the front is illegal in my state. I'm basically risking a ticket over being blinded when driving at night/early morning because theres no alternative and Ill be starting night shifts in a few months
>>28088369thats a pickle. You might have to see an eye doctor to get an exemption. Did you know that hanging stuff from the rear view mirror is illegal? Too many bullcrap laws.Eye Dr. might help you get exemption but you have to keep the Dr.note in the car glove box for any stops. Dont be a n*gger at a car stop.
My wife wants a small SUV and doesn't budget her money well. I'm looking at the Mazda cx30, Nissan rogue, and Hyundai Tucson. Anyone own one of these or another that they like? Please include what/why if so
>>28088422>RogueNo, retard. I personally know two people who bought one new and both had their cvts crap out before 60k miles. Covered under extended warranty at least.>TucsonI don't trust Korean cars yet >Cx30Why not a cx5? Not small enough ?
>>28088451Cx5 is also on the table. Mazdas are uglier than sin imo but mechanically everything I've read says they are making one of the best current products. RE the Korean shit, they've got the best warranty in the game right now which is reassuring
i highly suspect a malfunctioning gas pump overfilled my 08 honda civic's tank by about 3 gallons. could this have damaged anything? how would i know if anything's damaged? it's running fine with no lights aside from the fuel gauge showing a full tank for an unusually long period of time.
>>28088664If it overfilled it by 3 GALLONS you wouldn't have a question about it, youd be painfully aware by the amount of gas overflowing
>>28088754i deducted that it was 3 gallons by how much i should have needed based on where the gauge was and how many miles i had driven before it started actually going down which seemed to coincide with my estimate but i could be wrong. it's possible that this is a different issue entirely and i'm misdiagnosing it. all i know for sure is that the pump was pumping slow the entire time and it filled my tank more than i expected based on where my gauge was and then my fuel gauge didn't start dropping until i had driven about 70 miles (it's usually about a quarter down by then).
>>28087944I used to life in that stupid state. I still have a chunk f dirt that has not appreciated for thirty years.
>>28088664Gas is foamy. Going slow gives the best fill. If the pump was slow, it could have been cavitating the flow meter and ripping you off a little. Your tank has a ventilation system including a charcoal canister and a valve that can probably handle an occasional overfill and dry out without malfunction. More importantly, you should not top off when you get gas, it is a waste of time and money, not good for your vehicle, bonus for the environment and helps bring demand down, reducing cost for all. Don’t cram gas in the tank as a general rule.
>>28088936well i know it's not good to overfill which is why i'm worried. i go to that gas station every day and fill up and there was definitely something going on with the pump today.
>>28088664always know your tank size. maybe keep it lower than the tank size and dont rely on the gas pump to stop. did the pump make gas spill out? Civics are usually 12 gallons or so... I'm not an expert, research your car and watch the gallons meter.
>>28088790Why are you doing all that calculating? The pump tells you. It's more likely a poorly calibrated pump than anything
>>28088367>Why is it so hard to find service manuals for cars online?Because car manufacturers charge like $300 per month for access to them, which they don't want to lose out on.>I want to deep dive and learn as much as I can about my cars. Do you think a dealership would sell me one?No, no cars made in the last 25 years have a printed manual anyway, they're all digital files online.Search ebay, usually chinks will sell downloadable copies that they scraped from the dealer site fairly cheap.

>>28088455either of those is fine. I wouldn't keep rav4 off the table as well but Toyota is pricey for what you get.
>>28089059>>28089173it's a 13 gallon tank and no gas spilled out nor did i smell any gas. the only reason i suspect that it was overfilled is that it put more gas in than i expected it to based on where my gas gauge was and my gas gauge didn't start going down until 70 miles when it's usually a quarter down by 60 miles. i guess the issue could be with my gas gauge but that would be a big coincidence since the fuel pump was acting weird and i had no problems prior.
>>28089471>wouldn't keep rav4 off the table as well but Toyota is pricey for what you get.I looked at crv and RAV4 but for the price/year/ etc they are just out of her price range. The Mazda are truly ugly but I really like their stability so I'm going to try and lean her that way or Hyundai. Sounds like there's a real good chance I'm the wallet making the down payment so a lot of this is up to me too lol
>>28089564Well it could be a combination or one of many things. One being that your gauge was potentially off. Another being a poorly calibrated pump. And then like another anon said the slow fill may have reduced the foam and allowed a better top off. When gas stations start getting low they often pump slower
>>28089575ok i'm going to watch it and see if i continue to have problems while using a different gas station. if i'm not noticing any other symptoms besides the gas gauge is it safe to assume nothing was damaged or could something have been damaged that's asymptomatic?
>>28089594I would assume that this is an outlier scenario and not jump to any conclusions about damage until you see some evidence of it personally.
>>28089600ok. that's what i will do. thank you.
>>28089608Good luck. Check the calibration sticker on your next pump before you start too
How unreliable are old jeeps?I don't mind some squeeks and rattles, as long as it's still functional and in 1 piece.
>>28089619idk how old you're talking but my dad bought a 1996 jeep cherokee in 1997 and he drove it until 2016 before getting a new car and giving it to me and i drove it until 2019 until it got stolen by crackheads and totaled in the resulting police pursuit. it had well over 300k miles at that point and was still a reliable daily driver for me. of course i had to replace some parts along the way but by that time all of the important parts had been replaced and i felt like it still had a lot of life left in it.
>>28089619All old cars are unreliable, but a jeep wouldn't be any worse than anything else, unless it's one of the top end grand cherokees with all the gizmos, that would be a bit worse.

Would it be realistic to convert a cast aluminum rear sump oil pan into a front sump oil pan? I'd need to modify the stock oil pickup somehow too. Tools available: angle grinder and TIG welding machine.
my friend's car is sluggish and when I accelerate or leave it in first/second gear in traffic it starts to jerk like a galloping horsewhat could be the reason?
>>28089707You could try, just make sure the oil isn’t all sitting in the rear of the upper portion during acceleration.

>>28089964Oh if it's misfiring change the sparkplugs. One of my cars recently was sluggish and would get worse and worse over time. Changed sparkplug wires (I knew the plugs were new) and it fixed it. If you can tell there's an obvious misfire yea change the plugs and plug wires / ignition wires idk what car you have. Cheap and easy. If your car is coil-on-plug ..that's another story but not expensive generally.

I’m literally so sorry for thread-splittingI didn’t search /qtddtot/ but /sqt/ ;_;anywayhow do I connect the red and black wires on this to my car stereo?
>>28090227Find which wire is 12V switched on your radio and tap into it. I.e. cut away some insulation, wrap the wire around that wire, solder. Or use those vampire taps (not recommended). Or use "add a tap" depending on where your fuse box is and run a long wire from there. the add a tap should use a fuse location that is switched 12v. I.e. it does not turn on until your key is in acc mode (like your radio or cigarette lighter) Black wire - to the radio ground wire or any bare piece of metal. Add a real ground eyelet to it and bolt it to something. Or...again, splice into your radios ground wire like your red 12v.

>>28080582Are you using any LEDs anywhere? I put LED low beams in my '02 Passats' new headlight housings and it made my fogs no longer work because LEDs use less power. fogs powering on only when low beams get sufficient power.
>>28081428Is getting to the back of the stud easy on that car? Maybe destroy the stud from there to save the wheel and just buy a new stud for like 5$ from o' reilys
>>28083767You have a CEL and a low battery indication but you're not going to tell us what the codes are nor what the battery voltage is, and we're supposed to diagnose it for you? Fuck off. You're out of blinker fluid.
>>28088177There's no reason to replace the rotors unless they are warped (pulsing/wobbling when braking) or if when you remove the wheels you determine that the rotors are thin. Brake pads are an easy job you can do at home, and a great place for the "spend money on tools instead of paying other people" dividend. At $400 per axle you could come away with a floor jack, stands, sockets, a breaker, a ratchet, brake parts and consumables, and still have a few hundred left in your pocket. All you have to do is probably an hour of work per wheel (if it's your first time, more if it's rusty).112K miles isn't much unless you brake aggressively, my car went 150K on original rotors and I only replaced them because one was warped, not because they were below the minimum thickness (which should be stamped on the rotor or you can look it up).
>>28080228Thoughts on getting a 10 year old hybrid Accord or Camry?
>>28088664Impossible, there would be ~2 gallons of gas on the ground if it pumped 3 more gallons than your tank fits. There isn't any way for the pump to build up meaningful pressure in the tank considering the gaps around the nozzle which would just let it overflow, so an overfill can't damage anything (except, theoretically, get your evap system wet which could throw a CEL). What makes you think it was overfilled?
The speaker in my passenger door seems to be failing, but the sound quality varies from reasonable to very bad depending on the day. Should I just check for bad connections? Failing that, I figure ripping out the driver side speaker and swapping it in would be a check for a bad speaker itself vs connections elsewhere in the system. Is there any better way to go at this?
>>28092296Uhhhhhhhh take out the speaker and use a multimeter to check the impedence I guess?? Ofc you may not be able to find the specs that the impedence is supposed to be for an OEM speaker....so you may need to check the other side as well. But at that point you might as well just swap the speaker and check that way. Or just buy new.
ORB fittings. Do you just tighten these down until snug and then add another 1/4 - 1/2 turn? I hear you do not want to over tighten these since it could rip the oring ..and that they don't need a lot of torque either. If I was given a torque spec I would've used it...and what's a good lube to lubricate the oring with ? Silicon with ptfe? This is going to be used on a fuel rail .
>>28092257Ok>>28092296Swap it with the driver’s side and see. If the driverms side stops working, bad speaker. If the passenger side is still bad, then you need to start chasing the connections and wiring.
>>28094270I would just tighten till snug. I normally like the regular silicone for o-rings, I’m not sure if you want the ptfe when it comes to injectors. The silicone isn’t there to help o-rings seal any better, it’s to keep them from being torn up during assembly. I just use motor oil on the o-rings when doing injectors and stuff, works well enough to keep them from getting hung up and damaged.
>>28094297I'll do that and hope for the best. I think I have some normal silicone somewhere.
Is replacing the clutch and replacing the clutch assembly basically the same thing?
>>28094764yes. No one goes in there and just replaces the clutch disc. It's usually a new pressure plate + clutch disc. And since you're in there, a throw out bearing and pilot bearing since they're dirt cheap.
How would you remove fender bolt+nut that I accidentally squished with a jack? The bolt is recessed into the metal so it's impossible to get a grip on it with a socket. Things I've tried:>Vice grips (this caused the bolt to get stripped)>Drill a hole for a screw extractor but the drill bit keeps breaking.>Use a wrench to bend the fender flange back into place (images 2 & 3). This helped get a better look at it but doesn't help get a hold on the bolt.>Cold chisel to try to make a flathead screwdriver able to fit in the bolt head. My chisel wasn't cutting in too deep. I might try this again but on the side and really knock the screwdriver with a hammer tomorrow.
>>28094858It looks like you should be able to hammer a socket on there and it looks like you didn't attempt to drill it out which looks like it would work fine.
>>28088177bnuuy
Thinking about doing a coolant flush. Recently found out you can combine borax with vinegar to make a strong rust/descaling solution. Seem some people recommend it for their farm equipment from the OMs. What you guys think?
>>28094307Just do motor oil if anything. Like I said, the lubrication is so the o-ring doesn’t get damaged. Silicone is nice for plumbing because it sticks to the o-rings for some time on connections that will be removed like pressure washer parts, or items where you want the water to be food-safe, but that doesn’t matter for a fuel hose.
>>28094858I highly recommend having a set of extractor sockets for anybody who wrenches even moderately. Even if you don’t need them right this minute, you will be grateful for them the day they save your ass. If you have a little money to spare, go with something better like USA made Rocket Sockets because the cheap no-name ones will be crappy soft metal that can lead to more frustration when they don’t bite the damaged fastener well and cause more damage without removing it.Also just read the greentext. If you’re drilling it and the bit it breaking, do a quick google on “how to drill metal” and git gud. Center punch, use a small bit first and step up sizes as needed, use lubrication, and go low speed with firm pressure.

>>28095053i've never tried it, but my guess is commercial coolant flush would be effective and safer on the various materials it comes in contact to and probably pretty close in price once you bought a gallon of vinegar and a box of borax.
>>28096036honestly either will likely work, there's not a lot of difference. put your car into rockauto and it should suggest the proper fluid.

How bad is the maintenance/repairs on a Cadillac ats 3.6 or 2015 Volvo s60 t6 in terms of frequency/cost of parts/cost if someone else does it? I'm looking for a somewhat compact sedan/coupe that is semi-sporty, relatively reliable, and preferably has AWD and six cylinders. Sorry if dumb question, do cars have "service manuals" generally speaking? kinda like Thinkpad laptops, those come with very nifty diagrams and how-to's to take apart and service them.Asking because my dads GK/3rd-gen Honda Fit has a loose side mirror that is kept in place by placing sponges between the arm and the mirror itself. It seems you have to take apart the entire door panel to get there. It's just loose, doesn't seem outright cracked or broken tho.

I have a JDM 1990 Toyota that's been swapped with a USDM engine at some point, but the PO left the old ECU. this is causing some problems, so I want to put the correct ECU for the engine. I installed it, but the car won't start. do cars this old have the ECU locked to the VIN somehow? or is it just probably wrong wiring? >>28100839ok maybe my idea just didn't work. Was kinda a long shot. The problem is that somebody has swapped a (probably USDM) 4A-FE/5MT into this car, but it was originally a JDM 4A-FHE/AT car. The 4A-FHE is not that different from a USDM 4A-FE, but one problem is that it has a knock sensor, which makes the CEL come on and makes the ECU pull timing and run the car rich. That's how I discovered that this wasn't the original engine--I found the plug for the knock sensor but no knock sensor. I pulled the ECU and verified that it's the original 4A-FHE/AT ECU, so my idea was just to put a 4A-FE/MT ECU in, which I bought at the junkyard today. As you can see here,>>28100797the pins are exactly the same, but I don't have the pinout for the 4A-FHE ECU, so I am not 100% sure they're identical. I figured since the 4A-FE was running connected to the 4A-FHE harness/ECU, it must be mostly the same.

>>28104861>>28104883When it comes to old school BMX bikes, Mag Wheels were those big like 5 spoke one piece wheels, not a typical 30+ spoke metal rim. When it comes to cars, I think Mag is sort of just a description lots of rim companies use for their style. Technically it’s supposed to refer to some magnesium-aluminum containing alloy being lightweight, especially compared to steeliew, but it doesn’t seem to have any legal definition which really means anything.
>>28104876Yeah, nah. Got an Alpine myself. At least it's black and I can change the colour of the LED backlight and letters to match the stock lighting scheme. Sounds good too.
>>28103968Probably. Do some cross referencing with the part number. Tons of websites are terrible with their fittment calculator thing on the catalog, especially with manufacturers updating stuff and issuing new part numbers and having one # for a Chevy Cavalier and a different # for the exact same part on a Pontiac Sunfire. If I can do a quick cross reference and get 3-4 out of 5 sites telling me I’m ok, then I’ll order the thing. Sometimes you will see the part # you’re looking at is exactly the same thing as the OE part with a # that is discontinued, and that OE part fits the Ford and Mazda, so you can be reasonably confident the replacement fits both as well.

Car randomly started smoking white smoke out of exhust and then it disappeared after driving a while. Condensation? Oil burning? Coolant(plz no)? All i did was fill up on gas and then parked it for 20min then drove it home.
If I turn the wheel almost to the lock and let go (at very low speeds of course), instead of straightening out as expected it will pull the rest of the way to the lock. Could this be indicative of excessive toe-in? >go get an alignment I will next spring when I get new tires.
So I'm the guy that had a serpentine belt start fraying and then drove it home anyway, then drove for 3 miles without a belt. Now I've got an oil leak. Looked up causes, not vehicle specific, but the "harmonic balancer" oil seal seems to be to blame. My car is an 07 Impala SS.How much bullshit am I in for at a garage? >>28104891I see. It's just that I often see people refer to 5 spoke wheels such as Cragar Super Sports as "mags" so I wondered if all 5 spokes were considered mag, or if they had to be aftermarket to be mag, or what.

>>28080228Hey guys. I have a 2020 frontier and I’m baffled with a problem. I noticed the other day some coolant residue on my front tires, so assumed it was a leak or something. Driving the next day it started making a humming noise, like a fan or something, noticeable from the cab. Then I saw steam coming from the engine and the heat gauge went up a lot. I parked, popped it open and my coolant reservoir cap was popped off. I let it cool then added some more coolant. That also just leaked out everywhere. I got it to the dealership, I know big mistake, and they looked from 7 hours and couldn’t find the problem. They recommended expensive new thermometers and coolant flushes but it seems like they’re guessing. Didn’t even bother to address the humming noise, just said it was the normal engine fan. Any idea what’s actually going on?
>>28111144>Any idea what’s actually going on?You have a coolant leak. Also nice digits.Fill it up, turn on the engine, and see where it sprays out. That will lead you to your problem. You might also search for "2020 frontier coolant leak" to see if your car has a common coolant leak issue that many other people have found and fixed.
>>28111241Dealership said they ran pressure tests up and down and didn’t find a leak.
>>28111241Never mind, got an answer. The coolant thermometer was faulty and not regulating the heat right. Which caused the coolant reservoir to burst and spew coolant. Luckily it’s under warranty so I got the last laugh.

I have a 2014 bmw 328i with a few cylinders that need to be replaced in order to drive, the total replacement costs is roughly 6 to 8k and including the 4ish grand needed to fully pay off the title. Does it make more sense to buy a new engine for a ~170,000 miles 3 series bmw for my own set of wheels until I can save up enough for a proper replacement? I should be able to get away with this purchase by mid January and the depreciation alone should be enough of a lost cost to scare potential buyers away.

>>28111984oil pan design, overall effectiveness of the oiling system, engine application etc. crankshaft height is another, you don't want the oil level in the pan to get high enough to get whipped by the crank or conrods, not only does it introduce air that could potentially get sucked up the pump (and you really don't want that) but it also increases drag.the manual's capacity is probably just a conservative number to prevent or minimise the risk of that happening. A lot of engines you can often overfill by a litre, sometimes even two litres without issue. It's the first and cheapest insurance for anyone that plans to hoon their car around a track or similar.
>>28112571NTA but It was to my understanding that when you turn the car on the oil in the pan gets sucked up to nearly empty. How can that extra .4 liters make it do that?
>>28112593the oil pump still pumps at the same rate. whatever the oil level is at now with the engine running, the extra oil will raise that level
>>28108980Stop being a homophobe to the point of gayness.
>>28112341ok, you don't just replace cylinders, you need a new engine.first if you think it needs an engine because one shop said so, i would absolutely get a second opinion. shops are routinely retarded and say a car needs a new engine because they're too lazy to actually diagnose the problem.if it does actually need a new engine, find a good independent euro shop that would be willing to put in a used junkyard engine and get a quote. should be $3500 - $6000 including parts and labor and will have your car back up and running good as new.
>>28112376>>28112408I'm not exactly poor, the used BMW is my mom's and I'm saving up for a car. I figured why not fix this non functioning car for about half to a third of the cost of buying another car and save myself the trouble of the used car market. Worse case I'm down about ten grand max although I could be wrong.>>28112868Well it started with a drive train issue that killed the overall performance of the bmw, eventually coming to a complete stop and unable to start again. Took it to a shop that "specializes in bmw cars" and according to them there wasn't any compression in the engine (Pic rel). I already replaced the pressure sensors prior to sending it to a shop, so I can't think of what else it could be the source of the problem. Also the BMW is actually under 100k miles so I'm leaning more towards fixing it up.Captcha: G4YYD
>>28112571Interesting, good to know. I just fill as the dipstick needs.
>>28113450Well no compression could be the result of a few things. First and foremost, I'd be tempted to go to a different garage, as I'd like to think any garage worth their salt would stick an endoscope down the bore to check for any obvious damage to the pistons. Checking the oil filter for any metal shaving and such might also indicate a catastrophic failure for virtually no cost on your part. Basically you want to try and track down the reason for no compression before just throwing another engine in. If it's just rings or a burnt valve, you could get away with just have those replaced. Cracked block, though? Death sentence with no recovery. You won't know until further diagnosis is performed. Worst case is that they could take the engine out (something they'd have to do anyway to replace it) and take the head off to check for any obvious damage. If it repairable, great, but if not then just find another engine and chuck it in.
