Snowfall is near. What winter tyres are you planning to use this year?https://youtu.be/rfZbe7obxj0
>>28089602I used to run General Arctics and Dunlop ZIII.I got really sick and tired of switching tires, and going to the shop twice a year to program the TPMS because I cant do that without the $600 scan tool.So I bought me some Cross Climates.I really, really, really miss the track tires, but I dont miss winter tires. Both tires I could get 3 seasons out of.plus, we dont get a lot of snow here, and when it snows, they plow and salt. winter tires go under used.i m thinking of buying some reys knockoff and putting track tires back on for winterthe cross clmmaets are decent, they perform almost as good as winter tires do on snowunforutnaly they are loud as fuck and have too much sidewall flex for summer timeoh well
This is gonna be my first winter in a place with pretty bad ice and people's opinions on what you need are all over the place. A lot say the Wildpeak AT3Ws I've got on my truck are fine, others say to go with studless winter, and some even push for studs, but the disadvantage of those is that they're illegal after Mar 31 and there's often still winter tire weather into May. Not sure what I'm gonna go with, I've been wanting aftermarket wheels for a while so I'll probably get some kind of winter tire shipped to me pre-mounted on the wheels I want and then have the tires swapped between sets at the end of the season, but I'll have to decide if I want studded or studless.
>>28089602Nokian Hakkas

Something from Michelin because i like the smiley guy.
>>28089698hakka what? there is the hakkapeliitta 10 with studs, R5 without and some of the older models
>>28089640Why didn't you just get a second set of rims
Gonna keep running 14 year old General Altimaxx on the front and 12 year old Bridgestone Potenzas (all season) on the rear.
>>28089725I had a second set of steel wheels for the winter tires. i still needed to take my car to a shop to program tpms
>>28089726RIP
>>28089746odd. My car didn't come equipped with tpms, but if i did have one i would just ignore it for the winters i think. I know some cars automatically pair with the mounted tpms sensors like my brother's kia
>>28089756my car wouldnt let me manually add them. its that one off model year/trim that didnt have that option.if tpms not working, can turn off traction control. so a visit to the shop after swapping wheel is a must

old studded tires with almost no studs left from some random chink manufacturer
>>28089756Some cars are pretty obnoxious without sensors, my old one had a constant light that sometimes flashed and would pop up a message on the screen that you had to "OK" out of every 10 minutes or so. I actually like having TMPS on newer cars anyway, don't need the older kind that's just a warning light but the newer ones that actually let you see your tire pressure from the driver's seat are cool.
>>28089716R3, so whatever the newest R is
>>28089746No you definitely don't. Not sure what you're driving but my Corolla let's me swap over to tire set 2 and program it from the cluster. You just drive around for a few miles and it automatically detects tire pressure. I can't imagine that's only a Toyota thing
I got a set of 16" rims and some Michelin X-Ice tires my winter set. Already had them put on in October.
>>28089943ok buddy. cause me, the internet, car forums, and the dealer both couldnt figure out how to do it.
>>28089943Some cars definitely require an external programmer. IIRC my Fiesta ST did and I know for sure that at least some BMWs with them do because I used to work at a BMW/Porsche shop and had to do it regularly. (You need external computers for all kinds of shit with E46 and newer BMWs though, even a proper brake bleed requires an expensive-ass diagnostic computer [we had an Autologic tablet thing] to run a sequence on the ABS pump.)

>>28089602All seasons
apparently these are good for the moneyausfag so i havent ever needed snow tyres
This is my first year actually in a winter place where it snows a ton. Do you guys just recommend winter tires or chains? I never once saw "snow chains" signs until I got up north. Fortunately the car I bought a month ago came with blizzak tires and I was reading that they are snow tires. Do the tires really do make a difference? I have only ever used all seasons. In fact, I have only ever known of all seasons lol

>>28089602My truck has some Michelin LTX commercial winters. We'll see how that goes. My FWD shitbox needs some but I can't decide between some studded Hakkas or some studded Nordmans.>>28089688Pretty much all AT's are useless in extreme cold temperatures and on ice. Trucks are generally heavy enough to get away with studless tires.
>>28090277lol good morning saar
theyre not as good as dedicated snow tires, but I just got some falken wildpeak at trails for year round use. my part of new england just doesnt see as much snow anymore
>>28090319Wildpeaks have a pretty soft compound and a full winter rating (3PMSF), not just M+S. I'm a bit dubious too but I asked around and a lot of people in the actual area said they run the same tires and are fine, but a few said I should run studless instead.
>>28090516It may be soft but it will never be proper winter tire soft. An all season A/T in a real winter compound would last 5k miles in the summer. I'm sure they're "fine"' on ice but a proper studless winter tire is just another level of confidence and capability.
>>28089936I got the same tires on my car
>>28090229you don't need chains, but where there are signs like that you can't drive with all seasons. get studded winter tires, forget all seasons. all seasons are more like regular tires that the manufacturers sell as all season tires but they actually do as much as regular tires in the snownokian hakkapeliitta is good, I've got good experience with hankook ipike rs2
>>28090259You are definitely the kinda guy I see half in the ditch desperately trying to get his chains on at the top of the hill because he thought he was too cool to chain up at the bottom.
>>28089602Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT3, put them on earlier this week
>>28090665>you don't need chainsIf you get winter, you always have a set of chains, dicklet. You don't want to be stuck somewhere with no way of getting out other than begging.
>>28090665fwiw chains are a legal requirement in some places. Many western states require them on 2WD cars regardless of tires if you want to drive in the mountains in the winter, and some even require them on 4WDs with snow tires during storms or on certain roads and you may have to show that you have them in your vehicle even if you don't end up needing to use them.
>>28090665Thank you sir. Appreciate that information. Do you think regular winter tires is okay enough in bad conditions? people say there are a few blizzards over here and the main road over here is super sketch since they dont plow it. Plus it is long stretches of nothing. I arrived here at the tail end of the season this year and there was some 80 car pile up at my exit.>>28091942What is wrong with the studded tires? I have seen a bunch for sale on facebook recently but I know nothing about that stuff and it seems like a not so great idea for most non snow days. I dont know though. Still new to winter and snow living.>>28091985This just terrifies me... lol. I mean I am driving a WRX and it does have snow tires on it currently but needing chains on top of that? Are these things kinda easy to install?
>>28092170>What is wrong with the studded tires? I have seen a bunch for sale on facebook recently but I know nothing about that stuff and it seems like a not so great idea for most non snow days. I dont know though. Still new to winter and snow living.Studded tires and snow chains serve entirely different purposes.Studs are for ice and hard pack snow.Chains are for when you get into deep soft snow. You put them on when you're getting into that soft deep snow and you take them off when you get out of it.
>>28089602Some sort of chinkshit, I think they're called WinterKing? They're fine.
>>28091942yeah bullshit. I've been driving in the winter in finland since 2008 and I've never had a situation that requires chains.
>>28091942>>28092204Almost nobody has chains in my corner of yurop, and we get long winters sometimes. Might have seen a truck or a tractor fitted with them occasionally. They probably go off road more than passenger cars, because the roads are typically in good shape even if there's a lot of snow.Anything resembling a regularly used road or street is assigned a maintenance class, which sets a standard for how many hours snow removal is supposed to take. There might actually be legal consequences for the road's owner if the road remains in poor condition for more than a few hours, and the poor condition contributes to an accident or impedes someone's business.Proper winter tires are mandatory here, though. I just swapped in some Michelin X-Ice North 4's.
>>28092775>>28092790>I've gotten lucky so being prepared is wrong!I don't even live in the worst snowfall area of new york and I've needed chains to traverse snow drifts in the road 4 times in 15 years.50 dollars 20 years ago to not be stranded waiting for someone to tow you out in a blizzard.

>>28092204>Chains are for when you get into deep soft snow.So why do trucks in northern Europe put on chains before they go up steep hills that are icy but have no snow on them?
>>28093224They've worked quite well for me in deep snow and icy conditions, probably one of the better chinkshit winters you can get.
https://www.tire-reviews.com/Article/2023-Tire-Reviews-Winter-Tire-Test.htmI've started researching winter tires and the results have left me unsure how to proceed. What surprised me is that the data demonstrates that to gain snow/ice performance you must sacrifice dry/wet performance, and temperature is not a significant obstacle. Even in freezing/near freezing temperatures summer tires far outperform snow/winter rated tires in dry and wet. And furthermore, modern European-style all-weather tires like the Cross Climate 2 or Conti TS870 feature performance which is only single digit percentages worse on snow than a full snow tire and yet dramatically outperforms the snow tires in dry/wet winter temperature conditions. Even here in Wisconsin where I get ~60 inches of snow annually there are far more days in winter where I am driving in dry/wet roads rather than on unplowed snow or ice. The braking distances in the wet for a snow tire are ~10 meters longer than for a all-weather or summer tire. Interesting data, and like I said not sure how to proceed. At this point I'm leaning towards Cross Climate 2 as that provides excellent wet performance, good snow performance, and acceptable dry performance, all with vastly greater longevity than a true snow tire like R5 or Blizzak.

>>28093293based
>>28093284
>>28093284This is what makes it so tough knowing what route to go in those places with intermediate climates. It's easy to just say that studded or hardcore studless tires are the way to go when you're in a place that stays below freezing consistently all winter and where there's a lot of precipitation but it's tough in West Coast mountain and high desert climates where it swings from the 20s to the 50s or even 60s from day to day and you'll get weeks with no precip followed by a huge snow dump.
>>28093417I consider Wisconsin a 'real winter' location but that also means the plowing is excellent. Roads are plowed and salted very rapidly, so even during active snowfall the roads are more often wet with grey slop pushed out of the tire paths rather than true snow/ice like you'd find on unplowed roads. The vast majority of drivers here use all seasons year round and just drive super slow during active snowfall. The bonus snow traction is useful for emergency braking and accelerating from a stop into traffic, especially on steep roads.
>>28093284>>28093430Fellow sconnie here. You described perfectly exactly what I've always grappled with when it comes to just how much of a winter tire you NEED around here. Like you said, 90+% of drives in December-March are just on cold, wet, but well-plowed roads.Where it really makes a difference is just a few hundred miles north in the UP, where the annual snowfall quadruples. When I was there for college, I learned to appreciate snow tires because they made the difference between getting into my building's parking lot or sliding down the hill right past my turn. Now that I'm living back down here, I'm still in the habit of swapping my wheels twice a year, but there's a certain level of disappointment when there aren't enough harrowing driving conditions in the season to make it all worth it. Who knows? Maybe this winter will be a colossal bitch and I'll feel vindicated as a winter tire enjoyer all over again.
>>28093241Because they can't use studded tires and the weight of the truck improves the traction the chain provides. They also use chains with cleats.
>>28095137Studded tires are perfectly legal, they just don't make too much sense for long-distance hauling where the absolute majority of the distance crossed doe not require themSo what you're saying is that chains are also for ice and hard-pack?
>>28089602Might as well ask here because I don't think this is worth of a new thread, but I'm getting new tires soon, daily driver and I'm undecided and a bit hit by analysis paralysis. Small SUV, 225/55/17 I drive around 20K miles a year, and I live in that weird borderland of winter weather where I get snow, but not the snow that stacks up and piles up so it all ends up as a slushy mess by the time the storm stops rather than sticking aroundSo help me choose:>Friend of a friend has Costco membership, so I could get CC2s, Weatherpeaks, Destination LE3, Advantage Controls, etc. >Amazon has Cooper ProControls for $130 each, but I don't trust Amazon with regular delivery, I dunno about buying tires off them.>MIdas has Cooper Enduramax on a Buy 3 get 1 free sale. >>28089602Getting a set of Hakkapeliitta 10s put on this week after driving cheap korea studless ones. Moved up into the hills and they weren't cutting it anymore. Can't wait to not be scared to drive every morning.>>28090229Chains are to keep in your trunk/garage for emergency situations. You have to drive slow with them so its not an every day thing.
>>28097837>Hakkapeliitta 10Those are good. If you're not in the habit of driving too crazy, you can almost forget you're on ice and snow with tires like that.Just don't try to brake check anyone. They might have far worse grip than you.
If you're worried about snow just buy a set of Michelin Crossclimate2's and be done with it. Easy peasy
>>28098241CC2 are very good, but there are compromises. It's basically half as good as a dedicated winter in snow and ice, but twice as good in wet and dry. There is no tire that can do both snow/ice and wet/dry with equal aplomb, these are limitations of physics! https://toptirereview.com/michelin-crossclimate-2-vs-continental-vikingcontact-8/For another comparison, consider X-Ice Snow vs WS90; WS90 trades off snow/ice for wet/dry, X-Ice trades off wet/dry for snow/ice. Same decisions are being made between sipes (snow/ice) and water channels (wet) and solid blocks (dry). https://toptirereview.com/bridgestone-blizzak-ws90-vs-michelin-x-ice-snow/The question is how important is dry/wet/snow/ice for you, in what scenarios do you need grip? How many days of each?
>>28095773>So what you're saying is that chains are also for ice and hard-pack?Not for most passenger vehicles that lack the sheer weight to force the chain into the ice for traction.
I've decided to buy Nokian WR G5. There aren't many reviews of these but they are new whereas Cross Climate 2 is about to be replaced probably next year.
Continental Viking contact 7, previous was Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3
>>28089602>What winter tyres are you planning to use this year? Some shitty 10 year old all seasons made in Serbia, I don't remember their name.I literally don't give a fuck because I'm not a woman or an autist
>>28099874I had VikingContact 7s on my old car but they were like five years old before I sold the car, so it never felt too safe to drive on them. Super comfortable though. If my car didn't come with good studded tires, I'd go studless again.
I just bought 4 new summer tires this year and unexpectedly had to move to Michigan (from the south). Should I get winter tires or just bite the bullet and get 4 all seasons and be done with it. I work from home and my wife's car has AWD.
>>28089602>>28093284Michelin X-Ice Snow SUV if you live in a place that has ice that sticks around. Really wanted to go CC2s and not deal with the cost and hassle of swaps but the only times I've ever been close to an accident is on the ice and the CC2s are mediocre there. Despite the glowing praise for them in reviews and forums, the only "objective" test I could find saw the CC2s taking over 50ft longer to stop on simulated wet ice than a good winter tire (X-Ice, Blizzak, WinterContact) from 25mph. Maybe the tire-review guy tested on non-wet ice which is surprisingly sticky and so the CC2 is only a few percentage points off there but to me, a winter tire needs to be good for snow and wet-ice. I might have missed where OP is located, but if it's snow and the roads get plowed and salted, CC2. If you have to drive in ice, dedicated winter.
>>28099085Thanks for another test confirming the substantial ice braking advantage of a winter vs CC2.
>>28099713Bad choice. All weather tires are shit and combine the worst of both worlds.
>>28100302All Weather's are the future old man, specially since most of you faggots don't even get enough snow to really justify winter tires. If you get months of snow then yeah, that's understandable, but most of you fucking larpers get a heavy snowstorm that melts before the week is gone, and that's without going into how people freak and oversalt the roads for that very snowstorm as well.
>>28100523If you don't get enough snow to justify dedicated winters then you can more than likely get by on regular all seasons and some common sense. At that point there would be no point in using a shitty wearing, fast wearing, fuel sucking, hydroplaning all weather.

>>28093376Looks like good all seasons are vindicated and dedicated winter tires hugely overrated

>>28103959Depends on your roads. You could go with all-weather tires and see how it goes. Just use them as your "summer" tire if you decide to get a set of winters in the event they aren't enough. Usually it'll be obvious but if you are a newish driver, just ask an older neighbor or coworker. When I lived in Seattle, most people didn't get winter tires unless they were avid skiers but they are more common in Eastern Washington although most people were still fine with all-seasons. Ironically, Seattle has crappy snow removal which when coupled with hills, a tendency to freezing rain, the fact it isn't usually worth it to get winters, and the fact many people aren't used to it makes for particularly dangerous driving on those few days when it happens. Even my co-worker who grew up in Alaska was surprised how bad it was.

>>28107856Wet/aquaplaning tread designs usually have deep channels around the circumference. Winter designs usually have blocks that "bite" into the snow. Lots of sipes that might also do the same thing. You can't really "bite" into a liquid so these two design goals are at odds with each other. There's also an ideal softness for tires and winter tires are designed to be soft at really cold temperatures when other tires will often harden but they will be too soft at higher temperatures.

It's crazy how much better this is, the traction control "alarm" used to show up all the time but now I couldn't even force it to appear.I'm Colin McRae now.
If you aren't an X-Ice Chad I'd rather you not post on my board
>>28110944uuuuhhhh based
>people say tires only last 10,000-15,000 milesThat is total bullshit unless you don't rotate and dump the clutch all the time
>>28110689This is the big problem for the area I'm about to move to as well. Pic related is typical from November to April and sometimes even into May. It means a lot of wet and slush through the winter but also a lot of ice problems, and ones that are hard to plan around because it'll be snowing in the morning but then turn into rain for a couple of hours, and then it freezes into ice again in the evening and turns the roads into a hockey rink. Most people seem to say that good winter-rated A/Ts are the best bet but quite a few do run true winters and even studs, especially if they go up into the mountains a lot. (And they get a fuckton of snow up in the mountains too, the yearly average is only like 35" in town but something like 400" half an hour away at the main ski resort.)
>>28111077Or maybe they like driving like an "auto enthusiast"? On my FWD's I usually only get around 5k miles out of my fronts before I switch them to the rear. Pads and rotors last about the same. You shouldn't be here if you're getting 100k miles out of a set of tires. >>28111211Just go down a width size and pick a winter tire with lots of tread depth.
>>28110689If you aren't driving on ice, the Cross Climate 2s are better. If icy conditions are in the cards, it's a tougher choice. Winters are still plenty drivable in the wet but you need to drive more defensively e.g. 2 second follow rule and stick to the speed recommendations on curves. Hydroplaning is worse on winters so keep that in mind if you encounter that situation which in my case is common when driving down from snowy passes into a higher temp zone everyone is doing 10+ over the speed limit because they've passed the snow and really want to make up time but there are plenty of puddles. But hydroplaning is usually quick and easy to control. You can compensate for wet conditions in a winter tire by driving more defensively but you can't compensate for icy conditions in a non-winter tire nearly as much.>>28111211Sounds like a lot of icy conditions. I'd go winter tire.
>>28111370>You can compensate for wet conditions in a winter tire by driving more defensively but you can't compensate for icy conditions in a non-winter tire nearly as much.thank you for the legit and thorough response, I appreciate you
What got better dry asphalt grip at slightly above freezing temps, modern all terrain all season tires or classic tread design winter tires? In yurop all I can get in 165/80r15 or 175/80r15 is picrel, Vredestein Snow Classic, or Yokohama Geolander AT.The Vredesteins got a B rating for wet braking distance, but barely any winter tires get A. The Yokohamas got a C rating. They are slightly wider which could help dry grip.I don't plan to drive much below freezing with that car, but I live close to germany where they require all seasons or winter tires for several months. Same goes for driving in rain but that'll be unavoidable at times, so I do care about wet grip unlike snow grip. It'll also be driven some on dirt roads but nothing a regular all season would be inadequate for.
>>28111350>>28111370Yeah ice is what seems to be the main concern, the area's kind of notorious for it. It won't be as big of a deal for me this winter though because I won't be commuting until I start school in the spring (going back for a career change) so I should be able to avoid the bad days. It also depends on where I end up living though, can't get a place there until my one here sells (escrow should start today actually) and things are nowhere near as bad if I end up living in town, but there's not a ton I like within my budget in town, and meanwhile snow and ice are a much bigger problem in the hills 20 mins outside town but there are MUCH cooler places there.
I know this is only sort of related but how do I know what size do it to buy for my car? My car has 225/60R/16 tires but it has a donut spare. Resources online recommend 145/60r/20 donuts but my current donut in the trunk says it’s a 125/70r/16 tire. Neither of those size spares has the same outer diameter as my full size tires, so wtf do I buy? Another tire for existing spare or a different wheel altogether?
>>28112993Spare tires are typically smaller and only meant for you to get to a mechanic. Not sure why an online calculator would recommend a giant-ass 20" wheel for a spare when you could just get another 225/60R/16 ... if it fits in the spare tire area. I would just get the spare re-tired. But I would ask a tire shop.
>>28089602these of course, the perfect winter tires for my climate.
>>28113339the spare tire area only fits a donut, not a full size spare, I would just buy another rim and full tire if it did fit one since they're so cheap. I guess I'll just get the donut re-tired since it appears to be OEM but I find it wierd that the difference in tire diameter is so large. I'll just ask the tire shop I guess. Thanks, though.
>>28112611Never heard of those Vredesteins but the Yokohamas are popular in the US and if you are not going to drive on ice they should be fine at near freezing temperatures since they are winter rated. No clue about those Vredesteins though but dry grip near freezing is probably going to be similar since those don't look like a Nordic type winter tire which don't have great dry grip even at low temps. >>28113349um, hello based department?
>>28113366It is kind of amazing that you can use donuts and to be honest, I don't think I've seen a car on one in over 20 years. Never used one either since I use a patch kit but I figure it would pull something fierce. Maybe people just call AAA and wait now or something. If that is the OEM tire, it's probably way past its expiration date but good on you for looking to replace it since few people ever do.
>>28113349I got those on my truck. They don't really impress me much. They are a commercial tire so maybe I'm expecting too much. Pretty sure Hakkas are just another level.
>>28113387>I don't think I've seen a car on one in over 20 yearsI see them occasionally, usually on a rusted old corolla or something that should have replaced it over a year ago. I do want to replace it though, I've needed spare tires a couple of times now and don't want to be without an option. I was kind of bummed that it didn't come with a full-size spare, my '98 LS400 had one and I figured another huge sedan from the same era would have one but, I guess not. Hopefully donuts aren't crazy expensive or something.
>>28113533Always wanted an older LS400. What's the story behind it? If everyone in my town didn't drive lifted trucks, I'd get one - seems like the apex of comfy.
>>28113549Here it is, I don't have it anymore but it's still in the family. Long story short is that my dad is comfortably driving it into retirement alongside his own giant redneck pickup. It was/is the best car I've ever had. I owned it for 7 years and NOTHING ever broke. I drove it across the country and back and it performed flawlessly. Ultimate roadtrip car. Tons of power (290hp) and so quiet that it rivals modern luxury cars. I would have bought another one if they didn't cost so much now. if I ever move back up north I might convince my dad to sell it back to me. It'll end up back with me one day anyways.
>>28113559i would love to manual swap an ls400. just the idea of having an ultra comfy roadtrip ready v8 barge that i can be cheeky with as well makes me diamonds
>>28113602I think I looked into it years ago and iirc, Toyota/Lexus never paired a manual transmission witha a 1UZ, especially a VVTi one. That means you'd have to do a lot of fab work yourself. I want to say that most people who tried it swapped a 1UZ in things like an SC300 that already had a manual transmission option but, it's been so long that I don't remember. Either way, the cars have an open diff anyways and weigh 4000lbs, so I don't know how fun it would be. I sincerely wish you luck if you ever try it, it would be awesome to see.
I never have to change my tires because our state salts the fuck out of the roads.Having to drive over actual snow is very rare
>>28113608Why are you posting my wife?
>>28089602What is the cheapest I can buy wheels and rims that fit an 5x115 bolt pattern? Car is a 2004 crown vic and I'm currently running 16-inch steelies.I'd like some better tires this year, otherwise it'll be my third year running all-seasonsAs for why cheap; we got a large influx of criminals from a town over and they already shot up the bus station. Found out a homeless shelter is scheduled to open next week by my home so I'm looking into anti-theft measures at the same time. I fucking hate crime export.Max budget is $1200 if I tap into credit, $300-400 would be ideal.
