Update on my shitbox VT1100. Replaced the fuel filter today and it's back to running good. I should've done it sooner but the problem was intermittent and the fuel pump passed the flow test so I didn't think it could be the filter causing it to sputter past half throttle. It's also kind of a pain to get to. But look at this thing it was beat

I rode an xt225 from Vegas to Salt Lake City and back, what's the issue? That little bike is far more capable than you think, and the handling is better than you know. Mine is great, these are reliable tractors and don't mind riding hard even in the rockies, to a point. To be completely honest I'd keep the xt250 and pay it off, then get another bike after a few years and keep both. Then you can get a real touring bike like a tracer 9, r1250rt, fjr1300, etc.

Took off the titanium exhaust wrap after 5 months in every weather condition including hurricane flooding, snow, desert crossings, and quite a bit of rain. The exhaust went from shiny stainless to heavily patina'd. I kind of like it, matches the tenny. I'll leave it as is

I just got these axial block long johns not knowing that only the front is windproof. A little breathability around the crotch is nice but it's like 50% of the surface area. I rode for 30 minutes in 50 degree weather today and when I got back my ass cheeks were as cold as if I only wore jeans.

What do you guys wear in winter? I'm a cheapskate so I wear my summer gear (my only gear) with a windbreaker, overalls, winter gloves, balaclava, and a sweater or two. I like riding year round but it's a pain putting all these layers on.

Wasn't that bad, going from Vegas to Florida in 3 days on my shadow was a much bigger challenge. Just pin this bike at 65mph and stay in the right lane, you'll thank me for taking care of it. Fighting wind comes with technique and skill. Also look up Adam Reimann on YouTube and start learning his offroading beginner videos. Implement them and practice them, as well as pre loaded emergency braking. I've gone over bricks at 50mph and avoided getting t-boned thanks to practicing for the worst, don't ever be that guy that obliterates himself by wobbling into the back of a car at a red light because you're scared of the brakes.

Nobody in their right mind works on their bike during warranty here, even minor issues you should bring it in. Besides, during warranty any issue you have is free, you don't even have to pay for labor. And that way you have a paper that says they did it, not you.

The 690 is about 70 Hp in a 325 lb package, The 500 is 40ish HP and weighs 250 lbs. If you never have ridden a motorcycle before, they will both be a handful. Granted it's not 1000cc sportbike crazy, but they're still fast for a total beginner. I guess if you have $12k burning a hole in your pocket, go for it. If it was me and I was just starting out, I would be thinking of a Honda CRF 300L or Kawasaki KLX 300 , maybe even a Suzuki DRZ 400.

A CRF300 will do 65mph, it just won't be comfortable for extended periods of time.

Displacement, power and weight don't always correlate with one another.

A CRF300 is something like ~300lbs and ~20 horsepower where KTM's 350 EXC-F is ~250lbs and is just shy of 60 horsepower.


The CRF will make a far better, easier to ride on road at highway speeds while the 350 would be like trying to wrangle a hyperactive retarded squirrel.

Put them in the woods or on single track and the KTM will run circles around the Honda in the hands of a competent rider, but the Honda will be far more forgiving to the beginner rider.

TLDR

Start small / forgiving, learn from the mistakes you *will* make and upgrade when you're ready.

You only get one body, another bike will always be there.
