People do two things:(1) Swap lights for brighter white ones (illegal)(2) Adjust the aiming screws to tilt the regular lights higher for a pseudo-high beam effect without getting blamed by the police for turning on the high beams against oncoming traffic.Both of the above situations are not legal. My state allows officers to stop a car whose lights are too bright. The officer holds his clipboard just above the midpoint top of the projector lens (says my dealer) and if the beam is above the lettering on the side of his car, then your throw is too high. You get a "fix it" ticket which is very easygong. You aren't required to get formal proof but just write in there that you had the problem fixed. Mait it in within 45 days (they allow ten days after the 45th day postmark) for the mail to reach the processing center in the office. It is very easygoing. But if you ever get pulled over the same problem, the next fix-it ticket is NOT easygoing as you have to go to almost any formal automobile repair/maintenace shop and have THEM fix the problem. The shop then signs your ticket and writes in the shop info. You then mail it back along with the fine (because you didn't fix the problem adequately the first time). Don't do it a third time because that citation will force you to go to one of a few specialty shops approved by the state to examine cars. They will fix the problem, but also conduct an examination at your expense. If your car is evaluated as being unable to reliably hold the fix, then you will have to fix that problem. If you drive off without authorizing that shop to fix it, they will inform the state and now your car will be listed in the computer and get pulled over as soon as any cop car with a computerized license plate scanner camera sees your car.

It gets dark around 3pm this time of year in northern Sweden. Road markings are long gone on the forest b-roads which means every time I meet an oncoming SUV or pickup with high sitting headlights I'm having to put blind faith in God for like 2 seconds. Looking down-right helps against that afterglow however there's still no markings indicating the edge of the road so I'm guessing from memory several times a minute.

Swapping ultra-bright LED for the lower temperature quartz halogens in a projector is therefore also illegal. On top of that, changing color is also illegal so switching from 3000K to 5000K would be obvious enough to the officer to have that car pulled over at night. Of note is that the safety law regulates the lights. So if the driver gives ANY attitude to the cop, the cop can then point out the car, due to safety laws, cannot be driven further and must now be towed. Normally, the cop would allow the car be driven back home by not enforcing the safety part of the law.

There's a guy near me who drives a lifted truck with multiple LED light bars, LED converted headlights, and LED converted foglights that he always leaves on. Anyone coming the other direction gets retina burns and he's had all his exterior lights smashed, light bars stolen, tires slashed, wheels stolen, windows and windshield smashed, his truck keyed, and even his gas tank punctured, some of these multiple times. Every time it happens he just fixes or replaces everything and continues on as usual, and I know he's not doing it to be a dick or to show he won't cow to pressure or anything like that, he's just so fucking dumb that he doesn't understand why it happens to him and lives his life in a permanent state of paranoid butthurt. I'm waiting for the day it finally gets stolen or torched.
