I recently started getting this message in my 2017 Volvo S60. Apparently it means I'm supposed to take it into an authorized Volvo repairshop so they can "service" the car and remove the message. I don't know a ton about modern cars, should I actually take it to an authorized shop? Or are they just going to overcharge me for and oil change and brake inspection? Or should I just go to a jiffy lube?

so... just go to jiffy lube??

Usually these things have a code. A, B, 1, 2. Shit like that. It's possible this car does not.
It's probably just a typical oil change reminder. If you're due for an oil change, get it done sometime. If you're not, youtube how to reset the code yourself so it fucks off.
I don't know if your oil change timer also considers mileage, time, AND driving habits...so consider that if you don't think you need an oil change just yet and this dumb thing came on.

If only machines came with papers with words on it, almost like a manual would have the instructions or more detail

the manual actually doesn't include the message from the dashboard believe it or not.

you can remove the message by going to the setting and mark the car serviced. There should be setting somewhere for that, all modern cars I've driven had one. You can take your car to oil shop or diy or whatever afterwards

The absolute state

Anon don't take it to a dealer they will overcharge you, but also don't go to the nastiest quick oil place you know of because they will fuck it up.

Find a good private mechanic and take it there. He will do a service and use a diagnostics tool to clear the message in the ECM.

everyone in this state is either hispandex or a recovering speed addict. how do I find a trustworthy private mechanic?

Idk, ask around? Ask your parents or friends?
Use google and read reviews? Find a Volvo specialist?
I service all my own stuff, but for the big jobs I go to the guys my dad always has his car serviced at.

it's a fucking oil change, my imagination fails me on how they can screw up a fucking oil change.
