Should I get a c5 if I'm a wrenchlet and it would be my daily driver? I'm looking for a sports car in the 10-15k range and this seems like the best option that isn't zesty as hell (miata, brz, etc)
>>

Sports cars are not good options for daily driver , to be honest

Especially if this is your 1st , not 2nd or 3rd car
>>
>>28104276
C5 Vettes are a hell of a Performance bargain.
but they aren't super good daily drivers.
>>
>>28104276
Be prepared your likely going to fuck shit up and learn things the hard way at the very least
>>
>>28104276
Get ready for no space and aging electronics. Also good luck finding a 6 speed in good condition for cheap
>>
>>28104567
>and aging electronics
Is it just me or has that early 2000's era of GM held up weirdly well for reliability??
>>
>>28104412
>but they aren't super good daily drivers.

Why not?
>>
>>28104412
the whole design philosophy was a daily drivable sports car for boomers.
>>28104567
>no space
you've never owned a c5 I assume? the engine bay was designed very well.
>>28104573
>>28104276
go for an 01 or newer. 97-00 had a non serviceable ebcm that gm no longer makes, and if it goes out, you have to rely on the ever dwindling supply of aftermarket examples that fetch $1500+. If you do go for an early model and see the abs light on, run.
Expect that unless the harmonic balance has already been replaced that it will be going bad, and budget like $3000 to get it replaced. It's a big job to do yourself, especially as a wrenchlet.
Watch one of the dozens of corvette buyers guides out there, they'll go over all the other common things to watch out for and show you how to look up DIC codes and shit like that.

also I would suggest going for a "higher" mileage example, both because it's more within budget, and because it means its actually been driven. Cars don't like to sit. In 25 year old cars that have been sitting 95% of their life, rubber and seals like to dry out and crack.

2nd hand market, not aftermarket*
>>
>>28105254
Did boomers really buy c5s just to park them? Are there c5s with no miles kek
>>
>>28105263
My c5 with 95k miles was considered "high mileage" by corvette guys. That's less than 4000 miles a year.
yes, a lot of these cars just sat.
>>
>>28105263
Any American car with a veeyate for that matter, they're will always be a small collection of retards that believe their base model gt is going to appreciate just because they don't put on any miles, I see it especially with shit from 2000-10
>>
I've thought about getting a vette but don't want to be seen as a b**mer
>>
>>28105683
that's part of why I sold mine desu
corvette guys are some of the biggest faggots in the car community. they're just harley riders of the car world.
>>
>>28105683
I bought mine when I was 19 and have never received any negative attention linked to that.
>>28105755
What shithole do you come from where the Corvette owners are like that? My local club that I part of is composed of 70 year old geriatrics that hoon the shit out of their ‘vettes at the nearby twisties at almost reckless speed. They couldn’t care less that I had a shit box C4 and if anything kind of appreciated that as shitty as it was, at least a young man like me made the effort. The only stereotypical thing I ever saw them do is scoff at JDM ricer incel shit but that’s not exclusive to them.

literally every corvette club is faggot boomers that think their car is the 2nd coming of christ. fortunately I made about 6 grand profit flipping mine after owning it for a few years, but I would never purchase another vette.

C5s are great as daily driver.
(1) It's decent on gas (~30 at 60mph),
(2) has okay seats (lots of which slides forward if you brake too hard due to failing parts inside the seat rails)
(3) shitty shifter options (stock is super long throw, aftermarket is STIFF as hell)
(4) clutch engagement point is higher, so smooth take off is harder (but that could be because ours has an aftermarket clutch)
(5) the stock stereo is meh
(6) it's pretty so you will feel happier ig
(7) semi-cheap to maintain, as long as it's not driveline related. you can basically buy every part off the shelves, and every shop knows how to work on it. you can probably do alot yourself too, even if you are a wrenchlet.

On the higher end of your budget you can probably get a 2002 C5, arguably the best year. The 2002 C5 came with the updated ECU (2001 on), and should not have the oil consumption problem of the earlier cars. Avoid C5s with the adjustable dampers at all cost, because they are a hassle to find parts for, repair, service, and even if you change the dampers, you still have to remove the electronic damper control modules (which require special coding tool only specialist shops have).

Funny you think miata is zesty tho, I drive a ND miata and my gf drives a C5. Both are manual, the C5's shifter feels like it's out of a tractor.

>(lots of which slides forward if you brake too hard due to failing parts inside the seat rails)

That's just called g force kid. Now I'm gonna tape this 20 to the windshield and if you can grab it it's yours heheh
>>
> if I'm a wrenchlet
C5 is not really an ancient car, just get one with an ls1 and understand all the problems associated with certain years
>>
>>28105254
>the engine bay was designed very well
I'm talking about as a daily driver its a coupe with basically no trunk lmao
>>28104573
Not for me they haven't. I have multiple friends, 2 who've had either silverados or s10s, and then another who drove an 03 lesabre and then a v6 catfish camaro, and all of them had random issues ranging from oem radio functions, dash lighting, cruise control, and even the entire dash board itself crapping out multiple times on my friend's gmt800. The only stuff that hasn't gone is purely drivetrain stuff like the efi on the engine. A manual vette is your best bet
>>
>>28106743
>basically no trunk

They have sedan sized trunks. Have you never seen a c5
>>
>>28106743
>I'm talking about as a daily driver its a coupe with basically no trunk lmao
Ohhhhh so you've literally never even seen a corvette, okay!
I literally fit 5 fucking golf bags in my c5 before. It has a MASSIVE trunk. Everything about the c5 is huge.

I'm assuming you're relatively young so here's some things to note. V8s are a blast but if you're poor, be prepared to not be able to afford anything. Look up insurance rates for these and try to calculate how much gas you'll use every week. If you're financing, also look up what you'll be paying for the car monthly. Double all of that as a safe buffer and you'll have an idea of what it'll cost to daily plus also have some money leftover for whatever "surprises" may arise in the future.

You'll likely want to do your own service because people love charging a sports car tax everywhere unless you have a good relationship with a local shop. If you think you have enough money for all of the above then go for it. It's cool seeing younger people drive older sports cars.

first post, worst post.
But get something newer, OP.
>>
>>28111366
There's nothing newer in the 10-15k range like a c5

corvette insurance rates are nothing because they're mostly owned by boomers that don't drive them. any similar performance car is much much higher.
corvettes also have pretty good gas mileage if you do a lot of highway driving. you can easily get low 30s cruising at 65 in 6th gear because the car is barely above idle.
