>Today is May 1, 1985
>You've entered a coast-to-coast race spanning approx 2,900 miles
>The starting point is Red Ball Garage, NYC, at 1am
>The finish is Portofino Hotel, Rodondo Beach CA. First one there wins
>Pick your automobile
>List a few mods if you want, but the race is only 4 weeks away. Remember, this is before the internet, and you need to be ready in time.

Only mod you actually need is a fully automatic rifle or support helicopters with more rifles on them. The person with the least to lose has the most to win. If anyone tries to pull you over just kill them by having your copilot fire blindly out the window.

Brand spanking new 928s. Can cruise comfortably all day at 120mph like it's nothing, and tops out at 147. It's brand new so the wiring hasn't had time to disintegrate yet. Only mods would be a big gas tank that fills the hatch and have it optioned with the nice Blaupunkt stereo package.

Mercedes 560SEC. First one came out for sale in 86 but dealers often have the next year's model available so I should be able to get one.

It would be with the SLS hydraulic rear suspension.

I would try to get a massive fuel cell installed in the trunk and back seats (2 separate ones as the rear firewall contributed to the structural integrity of the car)

I believe the factory tires are high speed rated but if not I would swap them with the best ones I could afford.

Then a simple pump wired up to refill the main fuel tank from the fuel cell(s).

There is nothing else I would need to modify about the car as it comes from the factory built specifically for this type of driving.

1963 Corvette Z06 with N03 option. That gives me a 36.5 gallon fuel capacity with no nigger rigging required. It also has 3.08 gears and a 4 speed. I'll only do a handful of simple mods including:
>modern tires
>CB radio to get intel from truckers along the way, also for general bullshitting/trash talking to pass the time
>radar detector
>bilstein shocks for extra comfort
>long-tube headers
>heads ported and hardened valve seats added
>relays on headlights for better nighttime vision
The rest of my time will be spent making damn sure the rochester mechanical fuel injection is in perfect order. I make it to the hotel at 4pm the day before it starts and then pass out until midnight, upon which time I do an extensive pre trip inspection. If any friendly fellow racers need something like an air pump or a wrench before it starts, this is their time to hit me up.

>It was adorned with adjustable aircraft landing lights, radar absorption materials under the body panels, dual radar detectors and a radar "communicator" that would cause the Troopers radar to read "55 mph" no matter what speed the Shelby was actually travelling. The carbs could be electronically controlled, there was a switch that could turn all the lights out at once, even the brake lights. The driver would have to wear night vision goggles to drive blacked out. Everything was electronically monitored, fuel temps at the carbs, transmission temps, oil pressure, oil temps, rear end temps, etc. The range of the vehicle was extended by replacing the backseat with a 42 gallon tank to complement the stock 15 gallon tank.

>Within a week, Hal ordered a brand-new 1978 B200 Dodge Sportsman in two-tone Sunrise Orange and Spinnaker White, so they didn’t have to paint the van; it was built in these colors. The guys bought all the appropriate external ambulance fittings, installed a Dick Landy-built 502” big block between the seats, and installed an overdrive transmission. Most all of the conversion work was done by the famed Bill Mitchell at his shop in Connecticut.

some of the cheap classics from the 70's but only if I can put in a 5 speed. I think a 2nd hand 302 5 speed foxbody would be good, not really to win but to be fast enough to not feel like you are struggling. I think as long as you are reasonably fast its more about dealing with sleep and navigation.

assuming im still a poor nigger, i would get a 70s oldsmobile starfire or a chevy monza with a 305 and 5 speed. Preferably the olds for the more comfortable interior. I would either port the factory heads to hell or try and find some pre emissions sbc heads. pre emissions cast headers and i would make my own exhaust out of 2.25 fence pipe with a junk yard muffler. if it dosent have a spoiler i would make one out of plywood from the trash of a construction site. Then i would get an early 70s quadrajet from. a totalled car at the junk yard and not rebuild it. knock the air filter on the ground a few times to clean it out and some fresh goodyear gatorback tires and im set

"Roadcraft is the police handbook for driver training. It's used by all the emergency services and forms a key reference for driving instructors.

Updates for this new edition include a new overtaking chapter with separate sections on passing stationary vehicles, single stage overtakes, and multi-stage overtakes and new explanations of advanced concepts, such as limit points on left-hand bends.

Guided by a working group of experienced instructors, Roadcraft is essential learning for police officers preparing for the demands of operational driving."
