Say I buy a car with a bad engine. How much would it cost me to source an engine and do a swap?
Is this something I could watch a YouTube video on and do myself?

Depends on the car depends on the engine, and depends on the tools you already have on hand.

The last swap I did was in 04 Mazda with an engine from a 11 escape. Replacing parts like half shafts, clutch, and various hoses plus the price of the engine came out to be around 1100. Mind you I had all the tools on hand already that I needed for the swap.

You could get a general idea of how to do it but the key part is knowing what to do when things aren't straightforward, what do you do when a bolt is seized in an awkward spot? What do you do when an unobtainium plastic part shatters from years of heat cycling? what do you do when a wire gets caught on a body part and pulls out from the connector or gets cut in half?

Knowing what to do in all those situations are something you learn over years of doing automotive work, and aren't something you can gleam from a YouTube video.

Idk, let’s say a Mustang. Like a V8 anywhere from 99 to 11.
I’ve got a lot of various tools.
>what do you do when a bolt is seized in an awkward spot?
Wd40?
>What do you do when an unobtainium plastic part shatters from years of heat cycling?
I have no idea
>what do you do when a wire gets caught on a body part and pulls out from the connector or gets cut in half?
Electrical tape?
If I can’t do it, then how much would it cost to pay a mechanic?
>>
It's not a job for a beginner, but a "bad" engine doesn't necessarily need r & r, what is wrong with it?

>I’ve got a lot of various tools.
Bare minimum you're going to need is a hoist, jack & jack stands, comprehensive ratchet with 1/4 3/8's and 1/2 ratchet and box end set, breaker bars, screw drivers and pry bars.
Having a decent impact wrench and torque wrench will probably be needed too.

>Wd40?
LOL
>I have no idea
Gonna need to learn to plastic weld or find something that will bypass that part. That being said Mustangs don't typically have problems with unobtainium shit.
>Electrical tape?
You're asking for your car to go up in flames or be tracing out why your shits not starting when you finish the swap.

>If I can’t do it, then how much would it cost to pay a mechanic?
If its a straight forward same engine to same engine swap 5-10 grand. If its not then depends on how much money he's willing to say to get you to fuck off. 20k isn't unreasonable in that situation.

>a swap
Does that mean replacing the bad engine with a good used engine or replacing it a totally different engine?
The former is much more straightforward than the latter.

I’m just being hypothetical. Since looking for a car, I’ve came across a few blown head gaskets, some “won’t go into __ gear”’s, and a handful of rollers.

Yes. Like say the exact same type of engine, except a working used one.
>>28104867
Geez.. that’s pretty wild. I’ve got a hoist, impact, and pry bar along with quite a bit of Miscellaneous stuff.
>>
>>28104880
You should be able to hack it, but honestly you probably won't need to replace the whole engine unless you buy a car with a blown engine in the first place.

Are you looking to get a "deal" on a daily driver here or is this a project car?
>>
>>28104873

depending on the engine configuration, a headgasket can range from minor irritating time consuming repair, to omg i hate cars.

headgaskets usually mean some other 2nd order failure has occurred and it probably needs more than just a HG
>>
>>28104903
I mean ideally I’d like to get a daily car for cheaper, yeah. I don’t know if it’d turn out more or less expensive once it’s all said and done.
>>28104914
What if someone says the head gasket is blown but the car still runs and drives?
>>
>>28105248
Usually it turns out more expensive than if you just coughed up for a decent example desu.

If it has a blown head gasket there's usually another underlying issue. Maybe it was low on coolant or the water pump stopped working and they overheated it and warped a head, maybe the odometer's been rolled back and it actually has 300,000 miles. It's a cruel world out there, don't get caught slipping.
>>
>>28105885
Thanks for that info, anon. I appreciate it, and I’ll definitely keep that in mind when looking. Likely I won’t do it cause it’s hard enough to find what I want around my area as it is.
>>
>>28104873
>won’t go into __ gear
This one can be simple and cheap.
>>
>>28105248
>What if someone says the head gasket is blown but the car still runs and drives?
If it's your dream car I'd go forward attempting to fix the headgaskets. Pull off the heads, have a look at everything, you'll be able to tell if a gasket has gone, if it checks out, get the heads skimmed and reassemble. If it's fucked, then look for a replacement.

>it's another "if you have to ask you can't afford it"
