Personally I always saw them as trying to butt in with the big 3 and become the "big 4" but they only brought cheap shitboxes to the table and eventually Asian cars took over that role
I'm pretty sure it was the same as Dodge is now. They had a sporty image thanks to the Javelin and AMX that they tried to use to make the rest of their shitboxes look equally sporty. Not to mention they owned Jeep at the time as well.
cheap shit for cheap retards

>>28105801Basically, this and Jeeps.
>>28105743they are cobbled together from all sorts of partsI dont think the big three would allow AMC access to any of the good engines>tfw no Gremlin EV
The image I have of American Motors is: elderly shut-ins who live in a horder house and only drive their dull brown AMC hornet twice a month to presumably get groceries. If your ball goes into his yard it’s gone, chances are that if you see the owner of the AMC hornet, you yourself will never be seen again. Im a millennial, so I have a limited exposure to AMCs but I always think of that creepy old man whenever I see them.

>>28105743The only real thing they had going for them was Jeep. They did have some decent performance cars in the 60s and early 70s like the Javelin, and later on they made the Eagle which was pretty unique for the time. Ultimately, they tried to be different with their auto design in strange ways and it ended up being unappealing to a lot of people.
How did this thing lasted for four years?
>>28105743Funky company that did it's own thing. They had to use parts from a lot of other manufacturers, like ignition systems, starters and AC compressors, but they were pretty good. The later AMCs were known for nickel-and-dimeing people to death, on small repairs. The Eagles were a good example. The motors and transfer cases would go forever, but you could practically rip the entire dash out, with your bare hands and hatch hinges would break. Oh good, now /o/ gets the 500-seconds-to-post bullshit. Whole site's gonna be dead, soon.
