How hard is it to change a tire and what tools do I need? I have a Chevy Sonic (I want to put on winter tires)
>>28105972Impossible, don't even try.
>>28105972You need a tire machine and a balancer to separate the tire from the wheel. You could also just buy a set of the same size wheels of your car that already have winter tires on them, and swap between sets as the season changes.
>>28105972It’s not worth the trouble, don’t bother. Just get a new set of wheels and pay to have the tires mounted.
You could use 2 crowbars, bojack, but I don't recommend it.Any shop will do it for like $20 or something, but as mentioned above if you have the cash it's ideal to have one set of wheels and tires for winter specifically.
get a rattle gun (electric) dont bother doing it by handneed a 1.5-3 floor jack (Scissor jacks are great at snapping)
>>28105992Are you retarded? Break the nuts loose while the car is on the ground and then just lift the car enough to get the old wheel off and the new one on. You shouldn't be applying any significant force to the car while the scissor jack is working. Scissor jacks have never failed me in even the sketchiest of situations, you just have to have more than 1 brain cell
>>28105992>>28106014OP asked about changing tires, not wheels.
>>28106028op is obviously a wrenchlet for even asking the question, it's entirely possible he was asking about changing wheels.
>>28106032>Gatekeeps the car hobby over ego>Wonders why there are no more enthusiast cars or cheap aftermarket parts for every car anymore.
>>28105972you cant afford a $30k wheel balancer with a roller, take your tires to a shop and insist they rolling compensate them. Tell them to disable smartweight. Getting perfectly round and balanced wheels is bliss on the road.
>>28106036>It's gatekeeping to tell someone they need special tools to change tires on a wheel!
Does your poverty spec shitbox have a spare tire? Guess what, it also comes with a poverty spec jack and wrench. All you would need is a torque wrench and socket to buy
>>28106141>the only way to change a tire is with electronic commercial equipmentmidwit
>>28106170man and I thought beaners were cheap retards
>>28105972i really wouldn't bother doing that myself and i do it every yearyou either get a spare set of wheels and have an easy job changing them out OR you figure out how to get the bead on and how to counterweight the tires so they don't rumplydee hump the fuck out of your ride and suspension.google lead tire weights and figure out how you can't do this yourself without a very significant investment
>>28106170my dad has one of these, it fucking sucks to use, much better just to pay the shop to do it when you buy the tires
>>28106170The balancer is a piece of shit, but the bead breaker tool is a complete waste. If you aren't victim weight, just use spoons and your boots.
>>28106170I wouldn't use these on alloys
>>28105972If you mean changing tires like a bicycle, you can't, the place you buy them will take care of it.>>28106036Yeah, it's a real shame there isn't more aftermarket support for the Chevy Sonic.
>>28106036>Gatekeeps the car hobbyWhat the fuck are you talking about?
>>28106343>What the fuck are you talking about?Someone asks a basic question and people don't help because ego. It drives people from enjoying cars.
>>28106358>and people don't help>>281059752nd post in someone helped>>28105987And third post>>28105990And 4th post>>28105992And 5th postSo againWhat the fuck are you talking about?
>>28106371I was one of those posts that helped. o_O
>>28105972There are only 3 things I pay a shop for:1. Body and Paint2. Exhaust work other than O2 sensors3. Tire mounting and balancingIt's one of the most shit car related jobs.
>>28106170Using spoons and a rubber mallet is literally suffering.
I only have 1 set of wheels and I swap the tires on them twice a year. All you really need is soapy water to lube it, 2 pry bars and arm strength, but there is a technique to it. Breaking the bead is the worst part. Just watch this guy do it and you'll see how simple it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epWrjKyhAfo
>>28106170You've never fucking done this in your life I guarantee it otherwise you would never suggest to anyone else
>>28107042Is painting really that bad? I’m planning to repaint my car myself once I get it fixed up and I’m a little anxious about it.
>>28105972By hand or with hand tools? Hard. Get a second set of junkyard rims that are clean and pay to have your winter set mounted and balanced once rather than twice a year forever. Itll pay for itself soon and you can swap the mounted tires yourself if you arent a complete wrenchlet.
>>28107179If painting your car didn't suck, your paintjob does.
>>28106170>>28107065It’s not impossible. Tons of dudes will still replace tires on the side of the road with tire spoons. I’ve watched dudes change dozens of semi truck tires by hand.If you have nice alloy wheels though, I would never get near those with tire spoons. And if you don’t have a beat seater, hopefully you at least have a decent compressor and can try the zip tie trick. Then there’s the balancing, the modern machines will do a better job than the Harbor Freight bubble balancer, but if the tires and rims are in ok shape, find the little dot on the tire and put that in the right spot on the rim and you should be good up to 70mph.
