If ATVs and snowmobiles can have CVTs and nobody cares, why do people care when it's in a car?
>>28106613Lol
>>28106614Are you a stepped-gear pleb?
>>28106613Because classic stepless CVT feels weird in a car (compared to other transmission types), so people are put off by the unfamiliarity. You hit the gas, engine goes to 3000+ rpm, but, for a few seconds, nothing seems to happen. Then the car starts accelerating, but in a way that's disconnected from engine revs. This disconnect unnerves most drivers, especially when attempting to overtake.
>>28106613I only buy manual atvs
>>28106637I thought it was a deliberate protection feature to not do anything for like 2 seconds so the CVT doesn't get slammed with torque and blows up. I had a previous gen civic rental once and every time I came to a rolling stop there would be at least a 2 second delay before the car started moving again. I had to re-calibrate in my head what an acceptable gap in traffic to take a turn was because it was so slow. After a month I was begging to have my crash damaged mazda 3 back.
Cvt would be cool if there was a throttle to control it.
>>28106613Nothing personal, kid
>>28106613>why do people care when it's in a car?The only people that care are the Africans and women that blow them up by treating the throttle as an on/off switch kek. You will never see a patient and sensible white man bitching about these.
>>28106854That's not really the issue, the problem is absolute dogshit band-style CVT's being used to move a 4,000 lb vehicle. Nissan is notorious for this, their shitty CVT's almost universally fail above 100k miles. People dont have issues with planetary gear style CVT's like what Honda uses. I mean they suck for driving engagement and sportiness compared to a real transmission but they wont just explode on you as much.
>>28106613Show me an ATV or Snowmobile that weighs in excess of 3000lbs. Belts are great when the shit its propelling is only slightly heavier than the person riding it. Add to it that car companies cheap out on shit you end up with transmission that eats itself in less than 100k in most cases.
>>28107001I'm 180k miles in my 2013 Accord CVT and I think I can hit twice the miles without any issues.
>>28107001>most CVT’s only last 100k milesBold claim
Its kinda dogshit in snowmobilesEven as much as I like my LYNX or POLARIS>move throttle a little>a little more>fail to get to grip point to get it moving>move it more>randomly jerks forward instead of starting to rollThe only good thing about it, is that once its rolling, you can in 2 quick stages just go straight to insane unsafe speeds.
>>28106900>the problem is absolute dogshit band-style CVT'sBecause there's no chance you are able describe the design "flaw" yourself id venture to say the problem is your skin color and gender, wrenchlet faggot
>>28106613ATVers and snowmobilers always carry a spare drive belt with them. Think about that.
I like the smoothness of CVTs and having no gear changes.
>>28107516Id wager it has to do with the bands stretching too much and eventually snapping.
>>28108678It's rare that the band actually gives out although it does happen. What's more common is that over time the surface of the pulleys gets worn so you no longer have the belt sliding up and down smoothly as it changes ratio, and instead it slips. The most common customer complaint is basically "I pushed the gas after the light went green and it didn't go faster than 5 mph"
>>28106802Same. Not had one for years though.Had a Yamaha YFZ450 last, like 12 years ago though.
>>28106613My CVT Lancer has 135k miles which according to /o/ should have exploded about 100k ago, but it still works on my machine.Other than being too slow from 0 it's a pretty good drive.
>>28106613i literally fix and n_rig these on atvs/otvs/golfcarts all day. fuck you theyre not ment for car weights and they dont allow for engine braking and other life saving manuvers. the parts might be cheap but the design itself is cheap and inefficient
>>28106613They suck in ATVs too. Doesn't take much to burn out a belt. This is why the honda ATVs are better, normal transmission that lasts longer than you.
>>28106809>it's not a bug, it's a feature
when are we getting eCVTs that go over 180km/h?
>>28106613>CVT master race>simping for the NPC trannylmao
>>28110399No, unless you dont mind losing the warranty.
>>28106613I want to ocassionally floor it and not have to worry about the rubber band snapping
>>28111911If you're not risking a massive car wreck every time you hit the gas you're low test
>>nobody: “you know what would be great? A transmission that feels like it’s slipping ALL THE TIME! “>>JATCO: we got u senpaiCvt cars drive like dogshit, I’m sure it’s fine for mileage and cost to manufacture, but if you enjoy driving even a tiny bit, they really do suck ass.
>>28111900Do you mean to say there are no plans?I'm sure the germans wouldn't mind a boring cruiser that can still go 250km/h on the autobahn.
>>28106613atvs and snowmobiles have cvts either at low power or/and in constant slip condition, both of which majorly reduce loads and wear. a car is heavy and grips, so above a certain power and weight they can't handle the load. cvts are genuinely fine in kei cars, but in anything bigger, you're up for suffering.
>>28107524And can swap that belt with minimal onboard tools, trailside / miles from civilization, in like ten minutes if they vaguely know what they're doing. The real question is "why are the cars designed so hostile to service?" And the answer is rule 88.
>>28106833What is your meaning here? eCVT?>>28107524Never have I ever even purchased a CVT belt for a snowmachine or ATV.
>>28112330Please do that cuz Toyota would be more than happy to void your warranty on your shitbox. :^)
