if you put your foot down and ask more from the car, it will likely downshift and give you more, cars with a sport mode will likely kick down gears earlieror, like in the pic of the legacy you posted, a lot of auto cars have the ability to change through gears "manually", that gen legacy having steering wheel buttons on the sportier models and paddles on the facelifthope this helps :)
