Sportster 883 initial impression from a guy who has owned a total of 8 Japanese and British bikes, but never rode a Harley or any type of cruiser:This bike feels heavy and light at the same time. It's super stable and wants to stay upright and go in a straight line, but it also swerves and wobbles easily. It's super weird. It's also fast and slow at the same time. In low RPM it has so much torque, and it feels extremely fast off the line or when you're passing and too lazy to downshift. But it doesn't really build power as RPM increases like other bikes do. It also feels premium and cheap at the same time. The materials are nice, the buttons are nice, everything is thick and nothing rattles, yet it also shakes like a hobo on crack when you get outside a very specific RPM range. It seems like the kind of thing I should hate way more than I do, but paradoxically I kind of like it? It kind of feels like a fun game to ride it the way that it wants to be ridden and keep it smooth. Or, in another sense, it feels like an animal that has its own opinion about how fast we should be going, and that gives a stronger impression of ensoulment than other bikes do.

I think your best bet would be to just ride one. Ideally a lowrider, or a super glide. I’d stay away from the wide glides. For example the later year models, which ended in 2017 are significantly beefier than my 05, bigger motors, forks, a lot of shit, but it also adds to the weight. It’s the difference between a 110ci and the 88ci in mine. Then on the other hand, some people prefer the older ones like myself. As for the roadking, it is definitely a big bike, but once it starts moving you realize it’s got some real dance moves, and it’s a lot of fun. The road king posters in dbt swear by them, and it’s not like they haven’t ridden every other me genre of bike as well. That sporty you rode is really bottom of the barrel too. 883 super low, only thing going for it is the larger tank. It’s quite literally made for women. I’ve had motorcycles with 200hp, they’re fun for a bit but really unpractical on the street. It’s hard to appreciate 6 gears when you can’t even get out of first before you’re breaking every speed limit in the country. My Dyna probably has a whole 80hp, with 100tq. But with the right bars, mid controls, tall springs in the back so you’ve got some lean angle, it’s really quite involved to get some speed out of it. I could also spend a grand or so on cams and get it up to 100hp 120tq but for now I’m good. So for me it’s perfect for back country roads. If you’re in the states, I would look at your local Harley dealerships used inventory, if only to pick some bikes out to test ride. They’ll be happy to give you the keys. Just stay away from anything made after 2018 because China Yeah those Harley’s are really just something you need try to fully appreciate.
