It was basically a facelifted Ford Model 62, which was a mid 30's car, so you're not wrong. Bare in mind that the Pilot was released in 1947, which made it VERY outdated for the time. As you can imagine, they did not sell very well. Great looking cars now, though.

As I understand, shooting brakes were an attempt to combine some degree of practicality with the raciness of a sports car. Specifically, the name comes from the intent to carry guns and related equipment for hunting. Estates on the other hand derive their name from being merely a means of transport carrying passengers and luggage 'to the estate'. I've always thought of estates as having more seating or a bigger rear luggage space than a shooting brake (pic rel).
