>>28117896How does traction control work in a RWD car? If it stops sending power to the wheel that has lost traction (or applies brakes to that wheel), then the car slows down and the weight shifts to the front... so this means you will actually lose traction even more right?
>>28118093It basically stops you spinning away power to a wheel that loses grip until traction returns. That can be side to side or front to rear but it is theoretically such a short period that you wouldn't notice unless you have really effed up and the other corners can't cope.

how in the fuck do you find cheap cars in a major metropolitan area that don't have major faults? is that even a thing you can do nowadays? i have legitimately thought about buying a one-way amtrak ticket across my state just so i can be able to afford a working automobile and then just road trip it back home.
>>28119106Sometimes that's what it takes. First car I bought was an hour away. Second car was about 2. Third car was 4. Fifth car was almost 6. If you like driving it's not a big deal, just about getting a ride there to pick it up. Don't take a greyhound bus whatever you do though. You WILL get AIDS if you get on that bus.Sadly there's no such thing as "good deal" anymore. About the only edge you can get is to know someone who works at a dealership and has connections to source a decent vehicle. Otherwise you're down in the pit slogging through the mud and fighting for scraps with the rest of the plebs.
>>28119035Change the engine oil, filter, check tranny fluid level and make sure it's full. If it starts up and runs without issue, you should still change the tranny fluid, brake fluid, and coolant right away. Those fluids can absorb water over time and while it's not such a problem with something like coolant, it can be catastrophic for trannies and brake systems. Check engine air filter and cabin air filters, make sure they're intact and no animals are living in them. Visually inspect belt and engine bay as a whole, make sure no stupid animals have made a nest under there or chewed through wiring looms. Your battery will likely be dead too, so new battery. You will want to keep a close eye on it for the first few months as some seals and lines may have dried up/cracked/shrunk, and leaks could develop as you start putting fluid through those lines again.

Hypothetically, if someone was selling an LS-swapped Porsche Boxster for the price of a gently-used current gen Supra, would I still need to worry about the dreaded Boxster IMS bearing issue? Pretty sure the bearing is part of the boxer 6 engine from that gen, so any LS swap shouldn't even have one, but just wanna make sure.
>>28119125eBay is your friend. Otherwise it depends entirely on what parts you need, but you're likely going to be limited to someone domestic. The Onix isn't a global model, I think they're only in Brazil, so it's not like suppliers in America or Europe are going to have Onix parts.Best bet is to get very familiar with your car and see what platform it shares parts with, maybe you can cross-shop parts that are interchangeable from other suppliers. I know parts can be purchased from like the factory in China? (the 2023 is produced from the SAIC-GM platform of that year) it was one of the ways I was thinking but not sure how to do it. >Best bet is to get very familiar with your car and see what platform it shares parts withI also thought of that but I am not very car-savvy to do try parts and even think what parts could work or be similar that I can use.

The Cayman transaxle was engineered lighter with physically smaller gears and shafts, and the ratios were very short, which is not favorable or strong enough for the V-8. The Boxster S transaxle has repeatedly taken abuse over 600HP in our Boxsters, 914’s, & kit cars, and we have yet to see one fail. Even the gear ratios and optional upgrades are quite favorable to the V-8 conversion using the Boxster S 6-speed transaxle. We understand that this means you will need to source a good used Boxster S tranny from a salvage yard, but your Cayman transaxle has value equivalent to the Boxster S in many cases."

The center air support bracket on my f30 is cracked and broken, part 51117263478. I see a big rock is trapped up in there next to the radiator... so I think that is the culprit. Do I just need to remove the front bumper in order to replace it, or is this a more involved job?
>>28120768thing is, depending on year the IMS bearing issue tends to be overblown and can be addressed most of the time. There are tons of other potential issues that are vastly more common, which brings me to my point: Porsche designed their flat sixes to fit in that space, with service happening mostly underneath, from the sides, and by removing a panel behind the seats. An LS7 crammed in there will not likely line anything up the same way, and I'm definitely pulling this out of my ass because I don't know but what I'd expect to see is needing to drop the motor entirely for service that normally wouldn't be a big deal. is it still worth trying to order a car directly from the factory nowadays? how costly is it?
>>28117896Why are cars with more weight in the front more likely to understeer? Isn't more weight means tires are pressed harder to the road and have more grip? Or is this specifically the case for fwd cars? I don't get why fwds are more likely to understeer either...
>>28119125gmpartsdirectgmpartsgiantthere are other online sites that sell factory parts at smaller markups than the local dealer.why are you having to buy all these parts for a 1 year old car?
>>28121227shop vacalways vacuum dust and debris if possible, otherwise you're just making a mess and forcing it into places where it's harder to remove
>>28123793that extra weight is a force pushing out. imagine putting a giant hand on the front of the car as it's going around a curve and pushing outward on the front wheels, this is what the extra weight up front is doing.if you have extra weight in the back (air cooled VW beetle for ex) imagine the hand pushing the car out at the back axle and you have oversteer.>isn't more weight means tires are pressed harder to the road and have more gripthe maximum grip that the tire can hold is quickly overcome by the thousands of pounds of force
>>28123793>Isn't more weight means"Doesn't more weight mean", sorry, I'm ESL>>28123806So the more weight in the front requires more cornering force (or what's it called) and therefore more grip to fight the inertia and move that weight in a different direction, am I getting this right? Also, are fwd cars in general more likely to understeer because the front tires' grip has to overcome both the cornering force and whatever force the engine is applying to the wheels?
>>28123885>So the more weight in the front requires more cornering force (or what's it called) and therefore more grip to fight the inertia and move that weight in a different direction, am I getting this right? Yes, because objects have inertia that resists change in motion, having more weight there means the tires have to resist more inertia.>Also, are fwd cars in general more likely to understeer because the front tires' grip has to overcome both the cornering force and whatever force the engine is applying to the wheels?Yes if you're still accelerating through the curve that would enter into it. Also the increased weight of the transaxle and cv axles up front tends to make the car more front heavy.

Some of them looks more like an overbite which I hate the look of others have this thing /shape which I love. Doesn’t seem to be stock from what I can tell but seems to be a popular option most with the early Z’sI also noticed most people replace the eyesore stock crash bumper with this thinner silver more low profile one like in the picture, I assume that’s not a hard thing to acquire or do?If I’m not mistaken the bumper on these cars isn’t that part it’s the metal strip you can see to the left of the circle
>>28123993That particular part will likely be called a chin spoiler, but the universal name for something around that area is usually called a front valance. If it's the same area but on the rear, obviously it would be a rear valance.
>>28121470Probably. Obviously as the disc gets larger, the space for the caliper decreases, but certain wheels can also be a pain in the ass to fit a BBK on. RPF1's are notorious for this on Miatas with BBKs.

2020 Trax. No power steering. When I turn the wheel in either direction, there's a sound that's almost like tire rubbing from around the front left tire. The tire does not seem to be actually rubbing. The most distinct thing about the issue is that when turning at higher speed or after having driven straight at 50mph or so, there is no sound that I can tell. The sound is most obvious at very low speed and doesn't seem to effect any braking.Any ideas what's making the noise?

If not obvious then pop the wheel off and look at the bearings. Next time you drive see if you notice the steering vibration occurs only when turning one direction, if it only happens when you turn left then it's the right CV axle and vice versa. You might be able to disconnect it somewhere up by the battery, or just tape it off in the trunk.
I was running straight water in my engine during the summer, but now that it's freezing overnight I added antifreeze. I was talking about this with my boss and he said I don't even have to worry about it because it doesn't stay below freezing long enough for the water to actually freeze. I checked the weather data for my area and he's right, it does go below freezing, but only for a couple hours just before sunrise.he's an engineer and his explanation makes sense, but has anyone actually done this - running straight water in an area that doesn't get below freezing too long?
I'm doing some work on my engine (vortec 350) that involves removing the distributor and intake manifold. I made some marks on the distributor to line it up, completely forgetting that I had decided to set it at TDC instead (I was following a video). the distributor passes through the intake manifold, so the markings I need to line up are going to be on the intake.however, I'm cleaning the manifold. degreasing it and scrubbing it and all that, it's kind of necessary in order to get the gaskets back in place and get a good seal. meaning the markings I made are going to disappear. now I will be extra careful in that part of the manifold and try not to scrub them off, but if I accidentally remove them and have no reference to get the distributor aligned like it was, what can I do?my only idea so far is I can put the engine at TDC with the distributor out, then line up the distributor with its own built in markings (there's a painted line and a dimple on the shaft) and reinstall it and I should be fine, right? it makes sense in my head but I can't find a straight answer anywhere, pls halp as this is the only part I can mess up at this point.I'm still kicking myself for not remembering to set the engine at TDC BEFORE pulling the distributor out.
Can this dent be pulled or do I need a new fender?
I know the answer is money/lack of demand, but why are there just no reasonably priced, mostly reliable sports sedans/wagons with a longitudinal engine, manual transmission option, and at least 6 cylinders?I can't (realistically) have multiple cars in my living situation, and I would love to have a manual, V8 wagon with some sporty handling. I've longed for a Stagea or S5 Avant, but their increasing age and potential mechanical issues are too much of a concern for me.TL;DR: Where are the sports wagons (in the US)?
>>28117896Is it better to fully warm up the car, or is it the same if I just get to my destination quick?I don't mean pre-warmup the car, I have a very short daily drive, and sometimes I detour just to fully warm up the engine before arriving to workIs it better that way or is it the same if I just get to the destination and turn it off before the engine is fully warmed?
>>28128181It's your car, do it if you want to.Just don't come back to us crying when your engine is damaged due to you wanting to save like $10 on antifreeze, all because some faggot who thinks he knows it all giving you information he could or could not know anything about.

>>28128553BMW is coming out with an M3 wagon, but it doesn't fit one of your criteria. I'm sure you can guess which criteria that is. Actually, probably doesn't fit any of your criteria. The other part of it is automakers are content remaking crossovers with very slight differences in dimension, so they don't care to hit a market that practically doesn't exist anymore. Mazda was threatening to make a rwd 6 sedan/wagon with their new inline 6 but they just put the new powerplant in a crossover and called it good. I don't even know which one it's in, since they all look the same to me.
My friends car (92 integra) is cranking but not starting. He said it's happened one time before, but he waited a few minutes and then it started right up. It's happening again now and it still cranks but no start. Went to check for spark and all four plugs were drenched in oil. All over from where the wires connect to the threads and the tip had a thick coating of oil. This leads me to believe that the spark plug tube seals are leaking and oil has fouled the plugs, as only cylinder 4 plug had spark when testing; am I right in thinking this, or could there be an issue with worn valve seals or piston rings? The car didn't really have any issues and ran smooth before this no start problem. What weirds me out is every spark plug had a massive amount of oil on it. I'm planning on doing a compression test before we buy new plugs, wires and valve cover kit. Anything else I should consider?
>>28128335What you are saying is fine but the crank has two TDCs and you want to be on compression. If you are not, the engine will backfire and you are 180degrees out. Decide where to plant your feet and remember the clock position of your mark. That’s close enough.
>>28128181You are without anti corrosion and anti boiling stuff too but, yeah.
>>28129627well I scrubbed the manifold today and as expected I took the paint markings off. so I'm going to have to go with my TDC backup plan and hope it works. unfortunately I'm stuck anyways because a heater hose fitting broke off inside the manifold and I'll have to take it to a shop and have them extract it.

I’m trying out a new mechanic, i ask for a quote, i get one, thank him and the next day i call and ask if I can bring it (it’s a Friday), he says bring it on, which i do.Just a power steering pump replacement, I provided the part, they literally just have to install and do the bleed procedure. At most a 4-5 hour job, max.The crew says “ok we’ll take care of it” i say “ok we’ll get in touch sometime next week I suppose, have a good weekend”Fast forward to now, it’s the next Friday, I haven’t heard a word from them, I waited about 2hrs before closing and called them about 4 times over the span of those two hours, no one picked up the phone. Left a message for them to get back to me, they probably won’t see it till Monday I guess. So my question is, am I right to be a little pissed, and to think they’re behaving kind of unprofessionally? Like, I feel like anytime during this week they should’ve called and left a message atleast if I didn’t answer their call explaining when they will be getting to my car, and also the me calling multiple times and getting no answer, it makes me wanna leave a bad review about their poor communication skills.Or am I being an impatient inconsiderate Karen? To be fair, it was thanksgiving week when I dropped it off.

>>28129991water is coolant. you're thinking of antifreeze. the only reason you add anything at all to water is to lower its freezing point, it doesn't make the water any better at cooling because water already has the highest heat capacity of any potential coolant.also, works on all my machines, literally. I've been running straight water every summer for over a decade in multiple cars and never had an issue.

Just how painful or painless is the process of importing a car from Japan and getting it on the road in Texas? I wanted to import a kei truck for a meme hobby car. I know there's local JDM dealers here that sell trucks but they're all hilariously overpriced.
what are the main differences between a 3/4 and 1 ton truck and why would you buy one over the other?
>>28130643payload and towing capacity.the 1 ton has a heavier frame, brakes, radiator, suspension components, transmission cooler etc etc to make it better suited for towing and hauling heavier loads. 3/4 ton would be cheaper and better gas mileage. if you're not planning on towing and hauling very heavy loads, go with the lighter truck
>>28130623lots of paperwork, import duties/taxes, and you have to pay a broker. the car has to be older than a certain year, something like 25 years iirc. find a us JDM forum, and find recommendations for an import broker and contact them.

Not really looking for a solution with this question, but does anyone who drives manual rely heavily on audio cues? i.e. hearing the engine rev especially when getting going from a stop? I've noticed that when I have music playing I always over rev, like 2000-3000 RPMs by accident, just because it's harder to hear the engine, and what I expect it to sound like. I think I just have to get better muscle memory and not rely on audio.

I'm in the market for a new car. I'm leaning heavily towards the Mazda3, but open to other options. I have found "leftover" inventory at some local dealers. New 2024 models that have not sold. Here is what I've found:2024 Volkswagen Jetta 1.5T S - $20,2602024 Mazda Mazda3 Preferred Package - $25,700Which one would you buy? I’m not so sure with 2024 reliability and this and that, and the Mazda isn’t a Toyota or Honda, but I do know there’s a reason why shops will telll you they won’t service your German car. Even though it’s not a Mercedes, the Germans tend to do a lot of retarded overengineering and snowflake stuff while Japanese car makers tend to do stuff that just works. It’s kind of annoying when one manufacturer requires a certain type of socket to do a job as basic as brake pads while every other manufacturer uses standard hex nuts and bolts.

Hey everyone. I took my car into valvoline while I was visiting my family for thanksgiving. I got the oil change, and when I drove the 500 miles back to my place after thanksgiving I noticed the mpg dropped by 5 so I decided to check the engine bay, to see if they put everything back correctly. First thing I saw is they left channel locks in my engine bay, and I’m very lucky they didn’t fall into my engine while driving. But I checked the oil dipstick and pick rel is what I see. This is way overfilled right? The oil is also pretty dark imo ( I have changed my own oil before). This is a 2012 Impreza, how likely is it that I damaged my engine driving 500 miles with oil filled like this. Everything is performing fine but I made a claim with valvoline to have them take the extra oil out at least. Can any mechanics comment?
>>28137367Did you wipe the dipstick first, dipstick? And did you not see anything wrong with your oil pressure in 500 miles?
>>28137378I don’t have oil pressure gauges. But here’s a pic I just took now after wiping the stick twice.
>>28137367>>28137397That's overfilled by over a quart and a half. You need to take it to your local Valvoline and have them drain some out.All they'll do is pull the drain plug for a couple seconds then check the level. Make sure they start the car THEN check the level so they know it's right before you leave. Likely little damage, there's no oil frothing from what I can see. So the reduced mpg was just the added resistance of your crank having to turn through more oil.
>>28137397Must not have been THAT bad or it would foam up and even overflow and burn. I imagine you'd have noticed that. How the fuck do you not have an oil pressure gauge my 87 has a pressure gauge wtf

I bought a car in summer that came with aftermarket wheels and winter tires for winter included. When I was switching my wheels out, I noticed that the OEM/summer wheels were mounted with a mix of ball-seat bolts (for OEM) and cone-seat bolts (for aftermarket). That explained right away why the car didn't always track straight before (it feels perfect now that it's on the winters) but what long-term reprocussions should I be looking out for from this? Cracks in the summer wheels, bearing damage, anything like that? The tires I took off are about bald and not going back on the car anyway, so I'm not worried about how trashed they are.
I don't even think this is the right thread, but I'm annoyed>Have 2 litre car>Had it years and want something new>See something I like>Dad immediately tells me not to buy it because it's "too big">It's a 2.1 litre>Tells me the insurance is going to be enormous and all the rest of it>Insists I get a 1 litre or something similar that will be cheaper to insure and run>Currently pay around £40pm insurance for the 2 litre>2.1 litre is closer to £100pm>Find a 1.3 litre piece of shit>Insurance is £80pmApart from it not making any sense, am I in the wrong here? I'd much rather buy something I actually like for the sake of £20pm more than some hooptie that's going to need constant repairs and pay practically the same amount in insurance anyway, and that I'll have to get rid of way sooner. The only thing I'm saving on is the purchase cost (and tax). Overall it feels like a false economy.I can't keep the 2 litre I already have because it's completely fucked now and repairing it definitely wouldn't be worth it. My dad is one of those people where his argument is always he's right and you're wrong.I could just go and buy the one I want myself, but I'm such a spaz I'd get my pants pulled down on the price. That's the whole reason my dad is involved in the first place.

Is an E39 540i a decent weekend fun car for an experienced mechanic who doesn't want to spend more than $5k? I'm not afraid to buy the autistic beemer tools to do timing chain guides.
>>28138055Telling your dad to go fuck himself (metaphorically, not literally) is one of the parts of growing up. If you're the one paying for your own shit your dad has no say over anything, so sever the umbilical cord and be a man for once in your life. That being said, from what you posted, he is right that it's gonna be more expensive (you're pretty much posting about doubling your insurance prices after all) but if you can, and you're willing to afford it then go for it. Your dad will bitch and moan like a woman on her period, let him bitch. On the other hand, if you're still under daddy's economic umbrella, since he's bitching about insurance prices, is he the one paying for your insurance? and if that's the case then yeah, he has a right to bitch about what you're gonna buy next. The solution is once again, to be a man for once in your life and take over your own insurance costs.>>28138147Depends on the kind of mechanic you are, do you find wrenching fun or do you just do it to save money? >>28138147Autotrannies suck shit because ZF decided it was a good idea to substitute the valvebody control balls with plastic ones instead of brass/steel ones because "hurrrr muh metal shavings", literally was not an issue in the 4HP trannies, the plastic control balls in the 5HP wear out and will be swallowed at some point. The clutch pack crown baslet also tends to shed teeth which will turn the insides of the tranny into mush.Chain tensioners suck shit due to previous owners using shit quality oils.VANOS (BMW VTECH) actuators might need rebuilding/overhauling, but it's a simple enough job. Those two aside the M62 is a decent enough engine. I personally prefer the M60 found in the E34 540i because it didn't have chain tensioner issues and no VANOS.

>>28138285I have found multiple 6 speeds but they are not complete cars. The prices are exceptional. If i don't find a manual I can drive home, I'm ok with buying multiple to piece together a manual car at this price.
>>28138310but can you win against cars with more powerful engines
>>28138055Take engine size with a pinch of salt, it's not a very good indicator for insurance premiums. I have a 1.8 litre i4 that's £770 a year, a 3 litre i6 that's £480 a year, and a 3.6 litre v8 that's £260 a year. They also wanted £1,700 a year for a 3.2 litre i6 I sold recently, pic rel. Insurance is based mostly on the percentage of accidents in relation to the number of cars of that model on the road. Now as for your actual question; assuming YOU can afford it and it's not your dad's money, there is no reason you shouldn't just drive whatever you like. If it's your money, then do what you like with it. You spend a not inconsiderable time of your life driving, why spend it driving something that you don't like.
>>28138344if you're "winning" anything then you're probably in some kind of rules based event, and if that honda falls into that rule set for said event ,then it'll be, in theory, a fair competition. If you're not winning, then you're just shit.
>>28138120That's what I was thinking too.>>28138188I do get what you're saying. Regarding the insurance though, it's only going to be 20% more because I have to replace the 2 litre regardless.I can afford it I always look into all of that shit before I make a dickhead of myself. The problem is when it comes to negotiating with someone to actually buy it. He's shit hot at it and I'm dogshit at it. He seems to be concerned with fuel costs too, but things like that I know I can afford.I do pay the insurance and everything myself. I'm not sure what his major concern is regarding it. He seems to think I'm going to drive mental and kill myself or I simply won't use it...but I need a car so it's obvious I'm going to use it.I pay all of the insurance and all of my own stuff myself though. Only reason he knows about it at all is because I wanted him for the buying part of it.Only thing I'm concerned about with it that he wouldn't know all that much about is the more technical aspects of whether I'm buying a complete pill or not.>>28138374>Insurance is based mostly on the percentage of accidents in relation to the number of cars of that model on the road.I never realised that. Certainly makes more sense on why the 2 litre insurance is way fucking lower (it's an old man's car) where as the 1.3 is twice the price (it's more of a youth car).>You spend a not inconsiderable time of your life driving, why spend it driving something that you don't likeThat's also what I was thinking about too. There's a good chance I'm going to spend a decent amount of time on the motorway. I'd feel much more comfortable in something actually relaxing and meant for motorway driving over something that's going to shake like fuck the second you do more than 60mph with parkbench tier seating. Thanks bros.

Would it be monumentally stupid to buy a new vehicle right now? I was thinking about a lower-level Maverick for $33k new. I looked at a couple dealerships and there are a few used for about $30k with 30k miles as the top trim level tremor versions which has a bunch of shit I don't really need. Seems silly to save $3-5k on a used vehicle with a bunch of shit, also seems silly to buy a brand new vehicle too.
>>28138913Mavericks ended up being popular, so of course the used ones are commanding a premium. If the difference in price is so tiny might as well go new. Yes, buying new is a meme, but it does have it's benefits despite the drop in value of your car when you first drive it off the lot. The biggest benefit you could get is qualifying for special financing. Interest rates are still high, but if you can weasel yourself into a special offer or first buyer program, you could qualify for 1%-2% interest from their own manufacturer based financing, which would beat any loan you can get from any bank today. Specially when compared with a used vehicle loan, which would be slightly higher than a brand new vehicle loan. And this is the sweet spot to buy a new one, 2 years after it was released, they probably ironed out all the kinks.Ultimately it's up to you, but if you're gonna buy new now's a good time. If it's not a good time for you sit on your hands until used prices go down a bit further.

If the battery has the juice to start the car, it’s healthy and not totally flat, and alternators will charge 50-100A as long as they’re healthy. That will get a standard car battery back up nearly full pretty fast,I had to do my mom’s alternator a couple months ago. She ran with a bad alternator so long that the car shut off. I tossed cheap jumper cables on there for about 20min from my car running while I pulled the old alternator and put the new one in. Even on an older battery, it started fine, she drove home with AC blasting for 15-20min, and it was totally fine from then on. An hour long cruise with highway driving will do more than that.
>>28139312>>28138630Fwiw, you can charge if if you would rather do that than a 45min cruise. The problem is lead acid batteries go to hell after sitting at a low state of charge. So if you jump it and go for a 10min drive, it might start the next morning, but if it’s sitting at 10% charge, it’s not good for the battery. Also if you drove with that busted belt to the point where the car died, it might be worth testing the battery. If you caught it quick, it’s probably fine. But like 2/3 of the time I swap an alternator for somebody, the battery is shit or dies within a month or two because the dying alternator has been leaving the battery at a low charge for weeks. If it’s a 6mo old battery and the belt broke, it will be ok, but if it’s a 3 year old battery and the alternator has heen weak for months, that battery is going to fail to start the car the next cold morning or the first Monday morning after the car hasn’t been driven all weekend.>alternator + battery in the parking lot after corworker needed his 3rd jump in 2 days

I keep hearing Variable Cylinder Management / Cylinder Deactivation = bad. Even for Honda engines.Mazda put it in the CX-30, Mazda3, then removed it, then put it back again.Didn't remove it from the CX-5.On the other hand, I keep hearing the current gen Skyactiv-G engines from Mazda are pretty reliable, not discriminating the ones with VCM/CD, for many years/models/miles driven per car now.The CX-30 checks better all my boxes and i got a good deal on a 2023 in pristine condition with factory warranty and all that jazz, but has CD.Am i shooting myself in the foot by consider it regarding reliability? I would drive it at most 5000 miles/year, changing the oil twice a year
>>28140817If there’s a need for it, then sure, it’s useful. If there’s no need for the power and you’re not needing more power than the single stock battery can provide, then you’re fine.If they put one in a car, I’m sure there’s a reason.

If my car says it uses 5w-20 should i use exclusively 5w-20?
>>28143150Yes?That being said, unless you're going way, way off number, it's not gonna damage your car. As a mater of fact, cars have recommendations for alternate oil numbers depending on where they're being used, some extreme enviroments, like super cold weather or height relative to sea level might warrant a thicker or thinner oil
>>28143150Changing the viscosity of the oil can lead to serious damage if you don't understand what you're doing, which is this case.On top of that, the maintenance guide may indicate different viscosity on certain conditions (i.e. severe used, too cold, etc)

I got my 04 350z on the dyno today which has 172k km on clock, stock besides shit intake, removed cats and plenum spacer and my kw was ehhh>182kwmy torque was terrible >283nm is it just 20 year old engine shit or should I get a tune asap
>>28143585Didn't even know they made electric 350z's, but Is that not about right? Stock they supposedly made 276hp, and you have roughly 244hp. Including the vehicle's age, 30 odd horsepower seems like a realistic drivetrain loss, though the torque does seem excessively low. Could also be the dyno, as no two dynos will report the same figure. What type of dyno and how it is setup up is pretty critical.
>>28143585>>28143596I should add that 276 is crank hp, whereas your reading is to the wheels, yes? Which would make your reading even more realistic
>>28143596Yea the kw loss I get with age. The guys doing runs did say the dyno was a bitch but I was there with others and another with a 350z DE made 192kw and 326nm torque. I am confused by the torque difference>>28143598yes was to the wheels
>>28143599If the car feels good to you then I wouldn't worry about it too much, but If you're still concerned then find someone with another DE and ask for a short rolling drag race to 60 or 70mph or something. If you're both even-ish, then you know you have nothing to worry about. Having a piece of paper with numbers is nice and all, but your butt dyno is the main thing here.

Also could be a cause of overheating pads but it's not very frequent you get to overheat pads unless there's a sticking caliper / you drive hard frequently and for extended periods / you drive downhill a lot riding the brakes.
How bad are CVTs really? This guy wants to trade me this JDM honda fit with 97,000 kms for my USDM honda fit with 172,000 kms because he wants a manual. I think it's a good trade. I don't mind having an autotragic for my daily if I'm gonna get a minty car with 75,000 kms less on the clock. But I heard those CVTs can have early catastrophic failures. Is it worth it? Seems like the deal is really in my favour. I just need it to last 10,000 kms or so and I'm gonna resell it. Are they really that unfun to drive? I had a smart car with a CVT and paddle shifters and it was okay....
>>28145137CVTs by design are less reliable and less serviceable. That's exacerbated by salespeople advertising "maintenance free", which isn't true AND likely more needed than ever, so only an enthusiast user would consider changing ATF/filter.While Nissan and their earlier Jatco ATs take most of the hate, all brands/models had bigger failure rates compared to torque converter ATs.Mitigating factors: Honda's implementations aren't as infamous as Nissan and lighter vehicles are less prone to them. Adding 10000km over 97000kms doesn't sound too stressful.Do you research for CVT issues on that model/year, take it to a mechanic to inspect it and suggest fluid/filter change. Maybe it's overkill but i don't think would be that expensive for the peace of mind.
>>28145137>Are they really that unfun to drive? I had a smart car with a CVT and paddle shifters and it was okay....They're less reliable, sluggish, and those "shifts" that you thought you were doing with the paddles were fake. CVTs literally have fake gearing. Also it's a Honda Fit, it's not going to be fun to drive no matter what the poorfags here say.Why do you want this specific one when you already have a manual?
>>28145137when buying automatic try to avoid CVT as much as you can. theres a reason why conventional automatics are much more expensive and sought after (all cars). they more dependable and just better made. there also a reason why theyre so cheap when brand new. they do shit themselves quite often. difference is brand of car. if its premium like audi its fucked, when its some shitbox like suzuki its probably cheaper to fix. but cars like suzukis and hondas are so crap that its 99% not even worth fixing. its a whole different situation if youre buy eCVT which are in hybrids, those basically undestructable and really reliable. would i buy this trashbox fit? no
>>28145550>>28145137Yeah I converted the eurocuck miles to freedom miles and you're only at 108k for your Fit, and anything below 200k is low for a Honda, especially because long term I can guaruntee you that the manual tranny will be more reliable than the CVT. Unless this has more features and shit which even if it does it's all gonna be in Japanese so you can't even use it anyways. Guy is trying to fleece you because he couldn't find a JDM manual Honda Fit so gave up on that and is looking to get a USDM Fit in MT so that he doesn't have to pay anything extra.
>>28145552i wouldnt buy manual fit either. to import some trashcan from JPN is beyond my comprehension. get a corolla/yaris or some sort. theres nothing of value in fits. might as well buy moped at that point
>>28145555I agree, but I'm just trying to be somewhat empathetic to his perspective, 'cause I doubt he'd even be thinking about changing his car at all if not for this "deal" being offered.
Is parking on roads (besides highways) that do not have no parking signs, and do not have painted lines indicating a shoulder that is too narrow to park on, always legal? Twice now faggot cops have harrassed me about being parked in places that I believe are legal to park, both times cops claiming it is illegal to park there.First time it was on a quiet wide rural gravel road, all the way at the edge of the road. The cops said that when parking on such roads it is necessary to be all the way off the road on the gravel. I do not believe this because on quiet city streets with no painted shoulder, it is legal to park on the road as long as tires are within 12" of the edge; why would a gravel road be any different than a paved road? They claim I was parked in a "traffic lane" but if thats true then so is everyone parked on city streets that dont have painted shoulders.Second time, parked on a city street where parking is allowed, at the top of a shallow hill. No no-parking signs. Cop said it is illegal because it is the "top of a hill crest". This is almost certainly a lie by the cop because people park on hills on city streets all the time. Are these cops liars? In Minnesota if it matters.

>>28146152The term "Stage" means almost nothing, as what that entails varies from tuner to tuner. What does the Stage 1 and 2 in your case contain? ECU tune? Upgraded intercooler? What power levels are you working with? What year? What engine? So many variables to consider.

Are the service manuals for cars worth it or is everything available online now?
>>28146194Shop manuals are very helpful and available for cheap from online dependkng how old the car is. I bought one for my Volvo 740 and it shows a lot of information that online doesn't have. Also, as a bonus, shop manuals are actually used by shop techs so sometimes they leave notes on some pages on how to do things quicker / easier.
>>28146188If you're not beating the shit out of it day to day then I can't see it being much of a problem, assuming the work is done correctly and the tune itself is reliable.
>>28146194Depends on the car and your own personal preference. charm.li has a fair chunk of manuals available for free, but they do lack some more exotic models. I also find that having a physical book to hand that you can reference is often far more convenient than using a phone or laptop, and often times I find books easier to navigate thanks to things like the index.
I'm in the market for a torque wrench. I have one for higher torque values like lug nuts or head bolts etc, but I need one for more mid-torque stuff like 30-60 lb ft range.Should I go digital or split beam? I recently used a click-type and found that sometimes it wouldn't click, leading me to be wary of its accuracy, and I also snapped the head off a valve cover bolt because it never clicked.I also read about torque adapters like pic rel which seem like a good option too, anyone used one before? I hadn't heard of them before I started shopping for a new torque wrench. My budget is around $200, I don't mind paying more for quality though, I considered getting a Snap-On or a used one but that seems like overkill for a hobby mechanic like me.

Just got my first-ever check engine light. No other apparent symptoms at the moment. My immediate suspicion is overdue oil change because although I checked the oil a couple months ago and the level and coloration was fine, I know that the oil is quite old and that color isn't the only indicator of oil quality. I rarely drive, so my oil always receives way more age than use.Question is, if that IS the problem and I change the oil right now, will the check engine light go away after driving a bit more? Or does the fact that the light has come on mean the old oil has fucked with the engine in a way that would require some extra steps to fix/flush out/etc?Would a reading from my OBD-II port be able to verify whether or not that is, in fact, the reason for the light?

>>28147745Take it to an autoparts store that does free ODB readings and get a printout of the error codes. Advanced Auto, O'Reilly's, PepBoys, etc. if you're an American. There will often be descriptions next to the error codes. Often obvious, but you can feed them into ChatGPT for a likely diagnosis if not.
>>28147757>that does free ODB readingsI actually already have an OBD reader myself, I've simply never had occasion to use it before.
>>28147767then plug it in you fucking retard wtf
>>28147767>get check engine light>have device that can tell exactly what the reason for the light is>go onto an anonymous forum and make guesses and ask others to guess without any details insteadWtf are you doing retard
>>28147822>have device that can tell exactly what the reason for the light isThat was one of my questions in >>28147745.I just said I've never used it before.
Scanner says it's P0128 and P0128-FF. I can't find any information at all about the latter, but the former is basically "engine coolant isn't heating as fast as it should."I don't know how check engine/OBD readings work exactly, when I take a reading, is it giving me the issues present at that exact moment, or just everything logged up until the last time the light was cleared?Like, does it matter that it's 60°F outside and I took the reading just a minute after starting the car? The engine wouldn't have come to temperature in that time, would it? Do I need to do the scan after letting it run for some time?Or was the error code logged internally whenever the light first came on, which was while driving and when the engine would've already been at normal operating temperature? In any case, I'm guessing the most likely culprit is faulty coolant temperature sensor, right? The car's a 2010 and I don't know if/when that component has ever been replaced.
>>28147951You would know if a code cleared itself because the CEL would go out. If you have a CEL and are reading a code, that code is the reason for the CEL, regardless of current conditions. You could check if the code was transient or recurring by clearing the code, either with your code reader or by disconnecting a battery cable.
>>28147951Or thermostat. Google will tell you some stuff, but you gotta learn more and do more diagnostics or you will just be throwing parts at the thing. The codes aren’t an exact science, they mean a sensor reading isn’t what the computer is expecting. So it could be a bad sensor, bad wiring too said sensor, or a mechanical part going bad that gives the out of range reading to the sensor which trips the code.
Is it relatively normal for hazard lights to turn by themselves overnight?
>>28148637no, probably a malfunction in the switch or in the body control module
